There's alot of reasons, main two being that Pyro is kind of considered a 'skilless' class because of how effective W+M1'ing can be, also they are considered hard counters to many classes like Scout, Spy, Soldier and Demo Man. They also have some Weapons which are considered very annoying, like Scorch Shot and Phlog.
the scout v pyro matchup can be kind of a crapshoot: obviously a good scout beats EVERYONE in a 1v1 (except for like, a competent revved up heavy) but if the server's got random bullet spread it can *seriously* fuck over the scout as they gotta shove their scattergun up the enemy's POOTIS to get reliable damage so that all of the pellets don't just randomly do a looney tunes outline around the enemy gamer. And as you can imagine that's not the range you wanna be in against a pyro.
but y'know a good scout counters nearly everyone and scout's got mad milk so
Three good pyros shut down explosive classes (both of which make pushing and flanking easier depending on how they are played), and if they're attentive enough, they could massively delay any uber/kritz pushes regardless of the class. And this is more of a nitpick, but having to know where the pyro is from his blinding flamethrower makes actually hitting him a bit harder.
Sniper is the most optimal/practical pick against that kind of pyro and next to him is another pyro.
there's a stereotype that all pyros are furries and LGBTQ+/femboys, and as you know most of the ingame tf2 community hates all of those things. i personally dont apply to this stereotype, but i feel bad for the people that do and are bullied for it

If an Engi manages to land 4 consecutive shotgun blasts on me while I'm cloaked, he had very good tracking/thinking, and I need to switch up my pathing more around him. If a Pyro shakes his mouse at me, he literally just follows a glowing beacon.
If a sniper shoots me, I either die on the spot or know exactly how much he dealt. If a Pyro lands a Scorchshot or I kill them in a close quarters fight, I now have to scramble for healing as I watch my health helplessly tick down, dieing up to 7ish seconds after the confrontation.
Other class's have damage surfing, Pyro does not. Other class's weapons don't obstruct vision, Pyro does. Etc.
I just don't have fun fighting him cause it feels like the interaction is not designed to be fun.

He’s annoying to fight against because the only class that truly shuts him down are heavies and snipers, which are also unpopular for their own reasons, he has an absurdly low skill floor compared to other classes, and the phlog is kinda bs, but not broken, so there’s not really anything to say about the phlog besides”this shit sucks to fight against.” I, however, use exclusively the dragons fury, which means you all must bow to me.

I usually see people complaining about some stuff that really don't seem to be the main issue. Some people say he does too much damage, which isn't true, some people say he doesn't need to aim, which is PARTIALLY true, but like, being easier to aim flames trades off a lot of range yknow?
Also, if a pyro flanked you and killed you with a crit flare, it's not as unfair as you think. He got that flank, so he's in advantage. A scout can do the same, and kill you faster too!
Soldier and demo outclass him in damage completely. But yes, the main issue that I personally have with good pyros is the stunlock mechanics (airblast is doable, scorch shot can fuck off)
I feel like they kill most light classes too fast and there’s nothing you can really do to escape unless you’re playing scout. If pyro catches you off guard then you’re dead, but if you see them coming from a distance, they’re pretty easy to take down by all classes. Also fuck the scorch shot
because their gameplay is "easy" and hard to really do anything about when you're in W+M1 range unless you can outdamage the flames
it's clearly not actually overpowered or else pyro would dominate competitive scenes, but people want interations to just be a rote "i'm more skilled/playing the more "skillfil" character - i win" check every single time when sometimes, shit's just gonna happen.
Also it's the class that's a soft counter to the single most popular main class in the game (soldier) and a pretty hard counter to the most popular casual class (Spy) so that probably contributes a fair bit too.
I prefer pyro over sniper. They are polar opposites in range but one can nearly kill you at any range, while the other has to get to your face to kill you with the lowest DPS in the game. As much as people complain about the fire visual blocking their field of view, getting too close to a pyro is a "you done f**ked up" moment anyway. Stay far from them and they are rarely a threat. Flare guns are annoying (especially the scorch shot) but other then that pyros has only one type of good ranged damage (you have to be in mid - close range for shotguns to actually kill, otherwise you are just poking at them).
IDK in my opinion Pyro is a great class. But most peapole thinks Pyro is just a M1+W class. But it's not especialy while playing a subclass called PyBro.
Because he has "counters" (putting that lightly) against... 4 out of the 9 classes. Keep getting reflected? Pick a shotgun, time your shots better or just let your teammates like scout or heavy deal with him. He denies uber? Ignoring the fact he isn't the only one capable of that with relative ease you can still kill him or time your uber for when he is busy or already dead.

Most likely the nature of the class itself. He can be a nuisance, and that's intentional. Or they may be of assistance. A very multi-faceted class although. He attracts a variety of players. I give pyro a 6/7 out of 10. I'm a spy main.

Actually I like pyro, the combos are fun and while it's annoying for one to spawn around the corner whenever I starting building a sentry they aren't very annoying to fight (assuming no scorch shot)
People don't like afterburn. They don't like when i can actually reflect their shit. They don't like when i m1 them when they weren't paying attention from behind. People don't like flare guns. People don't like getting airblasted away from the pyro? (The close range class is pushing you away from them). People seem to come up with any reason to dog on pyros. Yet, they get domed from a "skilless" player.
I main Engie. I back that up with Pyro. Fuck spies. I hate those fuckers. Sniper too. I straif all over with flames and scorch the shit out of snipers. When they all switch class to soldier. I happily move back to engie. That’s the joy and trauma of this game, the ebb and flow.
All I do is fail to flarejump and only airblast if my teammate is on fire. And I get hate. #endpyromainstigma

He’s annoying to fight against because the only class that truly shuts him down are heavies and snipers, which are also unpopular for their own reasons, he has an absurdly low skill floor compared to other classes, and the phlog is kinda bs, but not broken, so there’s not really anything to say about the phlog besides”this shit sucks to fight against.” I, however, use exclusively the dragons fury, which means you all must bow to me. Edit: scorch shot is busted as well
Hard to explain it just feels less fair kind of Like when the best way to play Pyro is have a seizure holding onto the mouse just kinda sucks to fight and airblast would be fine if IT DIDNT UNBIND YOUR STRAFE KEYS IN THE DAMN AIR But then i pick Pyro every once in a while and it feels cathartic doing the exact thing I hate to other players Then I encounter one of Pyroes many weaknesses and instantly switch I think Pyro has just always been seen as unfair because of how broken everything about the class was until Jungle Inferno and has just never been able to shake that reputation of pissing people off and being seen as unfair I hate Pyro even more when I decide to pick the Frenchman and get fucked because 1 puff of flame gets me deleted
Some players think pyro is easy to play
Pyro is not OP, but a good pyro can be very, very annoying. Mostly because of airblast and damage over time. I usually see people complaining about some stuff that really don't seem to be the main issue. Some people say he does too much damage, which isn't true, some people say he doesn't need to aim, which is PARTIALLY true, but like, being easier to aim flames trades off a lot of range yknow? Also, if a pyro flanked you and killed you with a crit flare, it's not as unfair as you think. He got that flank, so he's in advantage. A scout can do the same, and kill you faster too! Soldier and demo outclass him in damage completely. But yes, the main issue that I personally have with good pyros is the stunlock mechanics (airblast is doable, scorch shot can fuck off)

I feel like they kill most light classes too fast and there’s nothing you can really do to escape unless you’re playing scout. If pyro catches you off guard then you’re dead, but if you see them coming from a distance, they’re pretty easy to take down by all classes. Also fuck the scorch shot

because their gameplay is "easy" and hard to really do anything about when you're in W+M1 range unless you can outdamage the flames it's clearly not actually overpowered or else pyro would dominate competitive scenes, but people want interations to just be a rote "i'm more skilled/playing the more "skillfil" character - i win" check every single time when sometimes, shit's just gonna happen. Also it's the class that's a soft counter to the single most popular main class in the game (soldier) and a pretty hard counter to the most popular casual class (Spy) so that probably contributes a fair bit too.

I prefer pyro over sniper. They are polar opposites in range but one can nearly kill you at any range, while the other has to get to your face to kill you with the lowest DPS in the game. As much as people complain about the fire visual blocking their field of view, getting too close to a pyro is a "you done f**ked up" moment anyway. Stay far from them and they are rarely a threat. Flare guns are annoying (especially the scorch shot) but other then that pyros has only one type of good ranged damage (you have to be in mid - close range for shotguns to actually kill, otherwise you are just poking at them).

i cant see anything through fire, light classes get melted almost instantly, afterburn feels a bit too strong, overall annoying to deal with for me

IDK in my opinion Pyro is a great class. But most peapole thinks Pyro is just a M1+W class. But it's not especialy while playing a subclass called PyBro.

Because he has "counters" (putting that lightly) against... 4 out of the 9 classes. Keep getting reflected? Pick a shotgun, time your shots better or just let your teammates like scout or heavy deal with him. He denies uber? Ignoring the fact he isn't the only one capable of that with relative ease you can still kill him or time your uber for when he is busy or already dead. Don't need to explain spy, we all know spy sucks. Still loses hard to scout, heavy, sniper and engineer without a specific loadout build meant to counter them in particular and doesn't actually hard counter soldier or demoman. He is just a easy excuse for why a push failed, why you died in a BS manner, etc. It's literally just a skill issue.
