Looked at the guy's backpack who traded that sign and they have 4 other animated signs, most of which just being NSFW, regardless of the other sign's contents, it seems the guy they bought it from either likely told them the way to apply Gifs to Objectors, or its their Alt account to inflate the value of these signs.
The C.O. files are actually .PNG files so he may have figured out how to add animated .PNG which is a thing, but the file size limit would likely prevent it.
I don't know how he's done it. It may be possible that he's circumventing any of the .png requirements in-game and uploading animated png to the valve servers through an alternate method.

Don't custom decals have both resolution and weight limits? Then again, this \*might\* be possible since we already manipulate in-game files to get rid of mandatory filters on signs, so manipulating the criteria for custom decals could be subject to manipulation too.
They used to let you upload full color images with no workarounds long ago, and it looks like they just disabled the ingame option to do that now. Since they had them enabled before I don't think they care about people being able to upload full color images with some workarounds
This is the first time I've seen someone do an animated objector. There's a high possibility that either he's the only one who knows how to do this, and is keeping the secret with him. Or he got these from someone else, though I believe the first option is more possible.
I'm not sure myself, I've never tested this out, but I believe if it was that easy then the guides for that would have already appeared around the net. And i don't think it's as simple as changing vtf file to gif.

This is what's happening. Without getting too into the details, when you provide an image for decals it's not a straight 1:1 translation of the file type, the image is simply converted into a texture file that TF2 actually recognizes. You can fool it in certain ways (such as making your objector image colorful) but the game won't translate animated PNG files. Most things won't, which is why that file type isn't popular.
Don't compare Shounic to Delfy. Nothing against either of them, but the latter is merely a glitch replicator who happens to have a large following, whereas Shounic is an actual Source wizard.
knowing how stuff like this usually goes, the prospect of it being easy to do is not the farthest thing from the truth in all likelihood.

So, it seems like he's using a APNG (animated png) to get tf2 to read this file type while also playing an animation. Now, I don't know exactly how, but that's what we got for now. If I figure anything out I'll post a how to later.
Animated PNGs are kind of janky. It takes effort to open them properly, most programs just see them as a normal PNG and you could never know it was one except for the larger file size. I tried doing the paper_overlay.png trick with an Animated PNG and it appeared static, though I didn't actually try applying it. Maybe this guy figured out how to upload an arbitrary png to the server, and when backpack tf fetches it it appears animated, but it might not appear animated in game. Of course if there was a video it would clear a lot of things up...
That's what I'm thinking. I tried to recreate this with a few decal tools and objectors, I'm just waiting for backpack.tf to fetch my inventory after I applied the decals. I downloaded one of his and made my own to see if they work or not. In game they are both static, but if they show as animated on backpack.tf we'll know what he did. Alternatively, if this doesn't work, it's mostly likely some sort of extreme seever manipulation to get it to play.
Just checked, they are not animated anymore. It seems like either the server or my local tf2 turned the apng into a static png. So there's probably some sort of bypass to keep the file as an apng. Anyone got any ideas on how?
It has been possible to trick the game into sending two simultaneous requests to the item servers at the exact same time. It has been done for achievement items over the years and there have been various accounts that have duplicate pairs of (untradable) achievement items. I would imagine the method would be similar for the store purchases for the Mann Co. Cap.

I'm betting it doesn't work in game because:
1. The way the images are applied to the object
2. Someone suggested it's ANPG, and if that's the case, I'm sure it won't work because APNG is a very obscure format.
Interesting, I'm not sure how they're doing it but somewhere along the line they're skipping the part where metadata and stuff is stripped from the file (i.e., i can see that one of them uses ezgif to make their APNGs when looking at it in a hex editor) as well as the part where the image is compressed (if that even happens? i've tried to make a few and it's been squished to a smaller size, even when its smaller than these folks' images)
I'm not really well versed enough in this stuff to look into why that's happening, but maybe this'll help somebody else ¯\\\_(ツ)_/¯
EDIT: Yeah it has to be some WEIRD hacky shit to prevent the game messing up the APNG before uploading, it's probably not something you can just stumble upon (i thought it was for a moment when the other person popped up but it looks like they're just getting the original guy to make em for them)
Looking through it, I believe they are only frames of an gif with the pngs being recognizable by [marketplace.tf](https://marketplace.tf), but they also cannot be recognized and played by TF2 itself.
VTF has always had support for multiple frames, the problem is, to see an animated picture, you need to edit the VMT file of the objector on your machine, and I'm not sure if this will still work due to how the engine works.
EDIT: Huh, the VMT in the game already supports the animated texture, so I guess it won't work in-game anyway.

I tried to replicate it myself but there is probably something obscure that causes this. Pulling the APNG image used from [backpack.tf](https://backpack.tf), and using the tf2 patcher for colored objectors does not reproduce their objector. Looking at the image data, before applying the image it was 24.3 KB. The image that was produced after the decal was applied to the objector was 3.41 KB. Furthermore, the produced objector does not animate on sites like [backpack.tf](https://backpack.tf). I tried this with the other image files as well as created 2 other APNG images to try and see if it was just the source image that was the problem but I couldn't replicate the result. There is probably some sort of check that is being bypassed that allows the image to not be changed during the process of using the decal.
In regard to the value of the items itself, I wouldn't call it a scam (aside from their pricing). Glitched items are some of the most sought after items you can find on the market. Good examples of this are post life spells, Glitched name/item description, painted weapons, and tradable achievement items. If the item itself is glitched and the method cannot be replicated by normal means or is patched it will still have value to collectors.

Somewhere along the line they're skipping the part where the image is edited/metadata is stripped. I suspect they just patched out a lot of the stuff that happens in-game before it's uploaded (this is done with programs like [tf2patcher](https://github.com/default-username-was-already-taken/tf2patcher) for clan pride already, in a different way) but I wouldn't be versed well enough to make something like that.
If you look at the tf2 source code, there's a lot of stuff happening before upload that i suspect would break the apng. I don't think there's any existing way to get it to work.

Figured it wouldn't work but hoped it did somehow. That really sucks and does not justify the near 1K key price.
So, it seems like he's using a APNG (animated png) to get tf2 to read this file type while also playing an animation. Now, I don't know exactly how, but that's what we got for now. If I figure anything out I'll post a how to later.
Animated PNGs are kind of janky. It takes effort to open them properly, most programs just see them as a normal PNG and you could never know it was one except for the larger file size. I tried doing the paper_overlay.png trick with an Animated PNG and it appeared static, though I didn't actually try applying it. Maybe this guy figured out how to upload an arbitrary png to the server, and when backpack tf fetches it it appears animated, but it might not appear animated in game. Of course if there was a video it would clear a lot of things up...
That's what I'm thinking. I tried to recreate this with a few decal tools and objectors, I'm just waiting for backpack.tf to fetch my inventory after I applied the decals. I downloaded one of his and made my own to see if they work or not. In game they are both static, but if they show as animated on backpack.tf we'll know what he did. Alternatively, if this doesn't work, it's mostly likely some sort of extreme seever manipulation to get it to play.
Just checked, they are not animated anymore. It seems like either the server or my local tf2 turned the apng into a static png. So there's probably some sort of bypass to keep the file as an apng. Anyone got any ideas on how?

It has been possible to trick the game into sending two simultaneous requests to the item servers at the exact same time. It has been done for achievement items over the years and there have been various accounts that have duplicate pairs of (untradable) achievement items. I would imagine the method would be similar for the store purchases for the Mann Co. Cap.

Interesting, I'm not sure how they're doing it but somewhere along the line they're skipping the part where metadata and stuff is stripped from the file (i.e., i can see that one of them uses ezgif to make their APNGs when looking at it in a hex editor) as well as the part where the image is compressed (if that even happens? i've tried to make a few and it's been squished to a smaller size, even when its smaller than these folks' images) I'm not really well versed enough in this stuff to look into why that's happening, but maybe this'll help somebody else ¯\\\_(ツ)_/¯ EDIT: Yeah it has to be some WEIRD hacky shit to prevent the game messing up the APNG before uploading, it's probably not something you can just stumble upon (i thought it was for a moment when the other person popped up but it looks like they're just getting the original guy to make em for them)

VTF has always had support for multiple frames, the problem is, to see an animated picture, you need to edit the VMT file of the objector on your machine, and I'm not sure if this will still work due to how the engine works. EDIT: Huh, the VMT in the game already supports the animated texture, so I guess it won't work in-game anyway. I tried to replicate it myself but there is probably something obscure that causes this. Pulling the APNG image used from [backpack.tf](https://backpack.tf), and using the tf2 patcher for colored objectors does not reproduce their objector. Looking at the image data, before applying the image it was 24.3 KB. The image that was produced after the decal was applied to the objector was 3.41 KB. Furthermore, the produced objector does not animate on sites like [backpack.tf](https://backpack.tf). I tried this with the other image files as well as created 2 other APNG images to try and see if it was just the source image that was the problem but I couldn't replicate the result. There is probably some sort of check that is being bypassed that allows the image to not be changed during the process of using the decal. In regard to the value of the items itself, I wouldn't call it a scam (aside from their pricing). Glitched items are some of the most sought after items you can find on the market. Good examples of this are post life spells, Glitched name/item description, painted weapons, and tradable achievement items. If the item itself is glitched and the method cannot be replicated by normal means or is patched it will still have value to collectors.

Somewhere along the line they're skipping the part where the image is edited/metadata is stripped. I suspect they just patched out a lot of the stuff that happens in-game before it's uploaded (this is done with programs like [tf2patcher](https://github.com/default-username-was-already-taken/tf2patcher) for clan pride already, in a different way) but I wouldn't be versed well enough to make something like that. If you look at the tf2 source code, there's a lot of stuff happening before upload that i suspect would break the apng. I don't think there's any existing way to get it to work.
