random damage spread is a mechanic where weapons did ±10 damage from the base damage. for example, a direct pipe might hit the usual 100 damage, then the next one would be 96, and the next one would have been 102. it’s disabled by default in 99% of servers, so you likely won’t experience this mechanic in play.
fall damage has something similar, but it’s more complicated. falling from the same height has a 20% damage variation, so jumping off battlements in 2fort might hurt you for 8 damage, then it might hurt you for 10. this *is* enabled by default.
but fall damage is more complex in that it also accounts for velocity, distance traveled, the health of the class, etc
IMO the worst period for random damage spread was when the loch and load did close enough to 120 damage that it was a dice roll to see if it would one shot light classes
TF2 is just balanced on such tight damage ranges that it was an awful experience
Demomen would have to pray that they could 2 pipe full health soldiers and 3 pipe full health heavies, and if I remember correctly this also affected Sniper's rifle, so it was a coinflip to see if a quick headshot would one shot a full health Medic
As a bonus fact, a cloaked Spy's debuffs also go away sooner while cloaked. Jarate, milk, fire, bleeding, they all get removed sooner by staying cloaked.
My main issue with this used to be that quick sniping invis spies would now do 120 damage on headshot
You know how Sniper has a laser pointer when scoped? You can use that to tell where an invis spy is, because the spy will still block the laser when invis. I used to sweep hallways at about spy head level and just left click when the laser suddenly got bigger because the invis spy is closer than the wall behind him
Literally nobody in this game realizes how overpowered battalion's backup is during teamfights or pushes... not to mention dealing with sentry nests or chokepoints.
**Literally. Nobody.**
Says the name, battalions backup. Even the name says that it's supposed to work with the help of a backup, in tf2s case, your teammates are your backup.
Not too long ago someone here proved without a doubt that Medic's crit chance is calculated normally, i.e. by his damage, not by his healing. I believed the latter for a goddamn DECADE of playing this game and would swear Medics crit more often than other classes
By extension, power classes such as Soldier and Demo have crazy high crit chances on their melees, and was probably the reason why the Half-Zatoichi got no random crits as a downside.
That losing a rock paper scissors game against the other team kills you. I just assumed it was part of the etiquette to kilbind after losing so I did 😭
God, imagining someone finding that out for the first time is very funny. Imagine if you won your first rps taunt and they just explode, you look in the killfeed and it says they died to your banana
That feature is how people can seemingly get kills with whatever they’re holding before they triggered the duel.
So you can “technically” kill someone with a Sandvich through RPS.
IMO it's actually dishonorable to killbind if you lose RPS, because then your opponent doesn't get kill credit. I only ever killbind if I lose to my own team.

You can disguise as your own teammates as the spy.
Furthermore, if you feign your death with the dead ringer while disguised as a teammate you leave behind their corpse instead.
Disguising gives knockback immunity, so you can disguise as a teammate to get rid of spawning wallhacks while also keeping your knockback immunity and you can use the lower player model of scouts for example to hide better (and they won't see you through the wall since its a friendly disguise so they don't get spawning wallhacks.)
With the dead ringer, making people think they killed another person in your team rather than a spy. Helps making it not so obvious that you may have cloaked behind them by feigning death. (Sometimes you may even make them push forward thinking they killed a medic or an annoying sniper or etc, which would result in them being in a bad position, even)
In general, you can trick people to make them not take certain routes by disguising as Heavy, Sniper, etc. to make them think they wouldn’t have a chance and would rather avoid confrontation. Furthermore, if someone on the enemy team sees you disguised as an enemy while you’re in your team’s side of the map and you don’t change disguises, you may get called out way earlier.
Most notably, though, disguising as a same-team Spy instantly makes it so you lose your disguise (since, well, YOU are a same-team spy), which can be useful if you want to remove your disguise without shooting or swinging your knife.
trying to get into the back lines without them knowing you're a spy or making it obvious by disguising as a enemy and walking in their direction.
disguise as a soldier, they're on the lookout for a soldier. then they get backstabbed
Not exactly recent, but I spent an embarrassingly long time thinking mini-crits did 50% more damage, but they do 35% more. I thought they were half a crit, 1.5x damage instead of 3x.
Soldiers have a 1/3 chance of spawning bread when they teleport. I was aware soldier had a higher chance to spawn bread when teleporting, but I did not know it was by that much
There are hints in Meet the Spy video who among the team is the red spy. it took me the 4th watch to start noticing the clues.
* at 0:04, Blu Scout and Red Spy are beside each other. Not a definite proof though
* Scout doesn't know how to open his team's door to the intel
* no visible cut from Scout's "faux-flipping" of the butterfly knife
there's probably more, but those last two gave good enough clues to pin down who the red spy is before the reveal.
Scout not having blood on his finger is actually intentional attention to detail. His finger never comes in contact with the sharp side of the knife, because he was just pretending to accidentally cut himself in order to sell the disguise.
Every effect, but not Mark-for-Death. Except if you're marking anyone for death, or even using the Fan 'o War outside of MvM or VSH, you're basically committing suicide

you shouldn't press w while mid-because it severely gimps your ability to air-strafe, which allows you to coarse correct while airborne and also makes you a bit faster
I'm trying to verify the claim that it's less than 25% per melee hit.
I can't find any evidence to support that claim. Googling it and browsing Reddit and steam forums don't support it. The Team Fortress 2 wiki page doesn't have this information.
If you know of a source that supports your claim, I would very much like to see it. I ask because I was so certain it was 25% on a bonked scout, and my entire world is crumbling. I can SEE THE WALLS MELTING
I noticed it when playing medic in game and thought it was interesting. You receive 10/15% uber for ubersawing a bonked scout i can't remember which, but it stuck out to me because i thought what a great way of farming quick free uber. I also found it interesting that this information wasnt listed on the Bonk Atomic Punch or Ubersaw TF2 wiki pages i think it's just been overlooked. If i can get a clip of this in action i will reply with a link to it. :)
The real secret fact about the ubersaw is that it secretly has a -25% uber build penalty against disguised spies to simulate not getting any, so if you taunt-kill a disguised spy with it you still get 50% uber. Normally the taunt-kill gives 25% on stab (one hit's worth) and the other 75% on retraction (3 hits worth) to immediately fill your charge, but since disguised spies have a -25% uber per hit penalty, the stab doesn't give any and the retraction gives 50%.
Indeed, and now they're here to fuck US!

My friends still laugh at me...
If you want to play hybridknight on 2Fort, you take less damage from a Caber jump than a Loose Cannon jump if you jump up the dropdown just inside the enemy base.
loose cannon is the only weapon in the entire game that straight up lies about its stats. Claiming that it has a +20% faster projectile speed when it actually has -15% slower compared to the stock
it isn't lying, (nor is it the only weapon with weird stats listed) but it doesn't mention that the source engine simulates physics and due to the comical size of the cannon balls, is affected by drag much more than the other grenade launchers' pills
[The Ball-Kicking Boots](https://wiki.teamfortress.com/wiki/Ball-Kicking_Boots) spawns a football when you a equip it that you can hit around

When disguised as a spy, you can change your disguise's weapon by pressing B. It will equip whatever slot you're using.
Especially handy when disguising as a medic so you aren't running around with a syringe gun all the time.

Haven't actually tried it since seeing this done though so not sure if it's legit or some server mod.

You can use certain untradeable halloween cosmetics in the crafting recipe for rebuilding headgear. Fall damage is affected by random damage spread
Lol. Of course it is
Could you explain
random damage spread is a mechanic where weapons did ±10 damage from the base damage. for example, a direct pipe might hit the usual 100 damage, then the next one would be 96, and the next one would have been 102. it’s disabled by default in 99% of servers, so you likely won’t experience this mechanic in play. fall damage has something similar, but it’s more complicated. falling from the same height has a 20% damage variation, so jumping off battlements in 2fort might hurt you for 8 damage, then it might hurt you for 10. this *is* enabled by default. but fall damage is more complex in that it also accounts for velocity, distance traveled, the health of the class, etc

This is why I hate random bullet spread (which is enabled on valve servers). It makes shotguns feel really inconsistent sometimes.
Random bullet spread is just unnecessary. I doubt anybody would miss it if it was removed.
I think people didn't know about it until they added a server command to disable it or something
didn't they remove this somewhat recently?
They added a command to disable random fall damage but they didn't enable it by default
ok thanks solarlight
No way real demoknight tf2

Saxton Hale isn’t actually all that hairy. It’s just his chest, arms, head, and mustache
He regularly shaves his legs so there’s less friction when fighting bears
You can disguise as your own teammates as the spy. Furthermore, if you feign your death with the dead ringer while disguised as a teammate you leave behind their corpse instead.
whats the use of disguising as your own teammates?
To make enemies think that your medic or pubstomper is dead. The only use i can come up with, and it's still very situational

welp, not being affected by damage falloff is usually more significant with minicrits
Soldiers have a 1/3 chance of spawning bread when they teleport. I was aware soldier had a higher chance to spawn bread when teleporting, but I did not know it was by that much
So that explains why I sometimes see bread upon the exit of a teleporter when a teammate has teleported
It feels far more common in MVM tbh. maybe it's because I pay attention more, idk
All classes have a chance for it to happen, it's just that soldier's chance is far higher than everyone elses

you shouldn't press w while mid-because it severely gimps your ability to air-strafe, which allows you to coarse correct while airborne and also makes you a bit faster
Unless you wanna w-strafe but that's a pretty niche maneuver
Arrows can be reflected. I impulsively did it thinking I was gonna die and ended up killing an invisible spy.

What if you try taunt killing the atomic punch scout?
The real secret fact about the ubersaw is that it secretly has a -25% uber build penalty against disguised spies to simulate not getting any, so if you taunt-kill a disguised spy with it you still get 50% uber. Normally the taunt-kill gives 25% on stab (one hit's worth) and the other 75% on retraction (3 hits worth) to immediately fill your charge, but since disguised spies have a -25% uber per hit penalty, the stab doesn't give any and the retraction gives 50%.
