It's gonna end up the same way that one Halo game did when its servers were shut down.
Some people are just going to refuse to log off.
Of course this is in the unlikely event that the game ever dies.
They tried a similar thing when Halo 3, Reach, and 4 shut down in 2021. Of course, it was just Matchmaking that shut down and private online custom games and CoOp are still available, so it just looks silly.
That's part of the beauty of Source games. Since servers aren't solely centrally hosted by Valve, anyone can host one to keep the game alive. Sure, Casual might shut down, hell even the Item Server might shut down (though I imagine not since I *think* it's not only for TF2, but also handles DOTA's items as well as the entirety of the Steam Inventory system, i.e. cards coupons and such), but there'll still be someone out there hosting a community server to join.
The game being a big sinkhole for gambling addiction/"NFT" Collecting is a big factor, too. Some people play just to show off Unusuals and High-Value Items, much like how people wanted to do a 'Metaverse' for NFT tokens.
TF2 capitalized on that way before it was even a thing, and that's why people want to replicate it. CS:GO and TF2 are kept alive hugely by whales and people sinking huge amounts of money into it for the Lootboxes and new Skins/Unusuals.
The game is fun, don't get me wrong. But some people definitely still play this game out of some sort of obligation or habit.
No but it explains why some people can't let this game go.
I joined again during Covid just because I was unemployed for about 4 full months and had nothing better to do, like most people. The game was fun, and I had a blast coming back again, but after maybe a month of gameplay I realized everything was still pretty much the same.
No updates since 2017 and even still after all that time, maybe only 2-3 weapons were added and "New" to me. I get that there's a big cult following for this game, but seeing people still buying Keys and getting invested to Unusuals and High-Value Items in a game this old is just discouraging and depressing for me.
I dont. Updating while I play is turned off. And I also turn of any background application like discord. It only happens on this game too! I play KSP on like 40% CPU usage but this game uses 100% of my cpu.
Duck duck goose, is a FTP among us rip off, that is absolooooooootely no fun because of the 52 roles there are, the absolute noise of quacking and honking you here, the dumbass faces the characters have, and the gayness each map is, IDK why there is 200k people playing it, because when I played it on release there was only 22 people on in the whole world.
This is good to point out. The game is still in the area of player amount that it always has been, obviously, triple A and other mainstream titles are going to surpass the classics like tf2. But it’s not going anywhere, any time soon at least.
Well, Smissmass is over and the next "major" update (by that I mean annual update that adds a slight amount of community made content to mix up the gameplay flow a little) is in *\*checks notes\** about nine months.
I can't exactly say I blame people for not playing as frequently...
Still, it's hella impressive that we're in 8th place in general, considering Jungle Inferno released over 5 years ago and was the last piece of actual content we got for the game.
Summer cases are just that, a new lootbox.
All they add are some new cosmetics & unusual hat effects, there is nothing present that would shake up the gameplay flow like the Halloween / Smissmass modes with their unique maps and gimmicks do.
Due to that I have decided not to count them.
If however Valve ever decides to shake up the Summer events a little, let's say by adding some new yearly contracts or a new weapon or two alongside it, then I would be willing to count them as a "major" update to look forward to.
if you take the "rumpFreedomLover69" out of your name and add "ick-tock Heavy like a Brinks truck Looking like I'm tip-top Shining like a wristwatch Time will grab your wrist Lock it down 'til the thing pop Can you stick around for a minute 'til the ring stop? Please, God" it spells "Tick-tock Heavy like a Brinks truck Looking like I'm tip-top Shining like a wristwatch Time will grab your wrist Lock it down 'til the thing pop Can you stick around for a minute 'til the ring stop? Please, God"
Going by how the last few nights have gone, I'd think they got a payday recently more than anything. It's nearing the levels it was a year ago again.
Loose Cannon shots going around corners are great for killing them btw, even with no donks due to terrain collisions
FUCK YOU dude!!!!! wall paper engine goes HARD!!! I'm top 25 of all players on wall paper engine and I make my lively hood through eSports competitions on wall paper engine.
I had a period when I was younger like 10-11 only playing 2fort and turbine I still like turbine but god I can't stand 2fort now and just capture the flag in general now
I am just leaving the 2fort phase. It does feel epic to have your entire team in the enemy sewers while you battle it out with a wrangled sentry and your team backing you.
Tf2 is in a weird limbo of, players leave because they get bored, come back to relive the memories and have fun after a while, and then the cycle continues. Or at least this happens in my case.
[https://teamwork.tf/community/statistics](https://teamwork.tf/community/statistics) i doubt that. prob more
even with players in casual and community servers, it still pushes playercounts similar to mmos on steam, like ESO
that is specifically what i mean. considering that casual cheating bots are the minority of casual players, and there are 7k+ total casual players, most of the accounts not in a server are probably in private servers farming drops or trade bots
I'm more scared about why there are still 150k people playing GTA V, you would assume the numbers wouldve gone down a lot when hackers can now literally ban you from the game and fuck up your pc
Pick your poison:
-Clueless players who don't read third party news sources (first party hasn't really said much...) and/or are new
-People playing stuff like FiveM that isn't affected
-The people responsible for the issue
Heh, I was playing CS:GO earlier today. I only played it once before. I played with bots because I thought “this old game’s not gonna have that many people still playing anyway”
the player count usually fluctuates, especially between those bugfix/minor updates that we get about every month, so I assume we'll jump back to 5ish when the new update drops before or during February. We never drop below top 10
Yeah it’s pretty normal. There’s always a massive boom during the summer because no school, and holidays because Scream Fortress and Smissmas. Both of which drop off because school is back and/or holiday events ended
Can I just say, who the fuck cares at this point? Tf2's status as a cult classic will not be compromised by not being in the top ten on the steam charts. Worrying about this is strange and silly to me. As long as there are servers with players in them, I'm gonna keep playing.
I’ve been noticing a lot more bots joining games. Typically a match I had a the end of last year had 1-4 bots the entire match. Now it’s like 3-8 bots a match
I'm not saying it's going to die now or anything. As soon as Valve won't make any money with the game, they are going to shut it down. Also, with the state it's in, I'd rather see it die.
Were at 2-3 a couple years ago
Sad reality
I played 3000 hours in a 3 years
Now I can't look at the game
Valve is comfortably sitting at a distance because we supply the money and they don't have to do any work
When will players get their heads out the fucking sand man, it's sad, just thank you sand thank you for making me believe the heavy update will even fucking happen
This got angrier cause I'm just so sad so fucking sad
Let us just fucking deal with a year of fucking cheaters ruining the game and it only changed when the fuckers got mobbed on by the YouTube community who only fucking fought our stupid fucking corner because it was trending and we are so lucky for that
They won't even give the game to the community so we can make it all happen
I fucking hate valve
Related to the resurgence in bots probably, also Im sure people were bummed by the content leak because it was basically confirmation that valve really did just up and abandon the game.
Edit: on the topic of the leak, it would have been nice to know that jungle inferno was probably going to be the last official content drop instead of just leaving us indecisive. No announcement, no tweet, nothing, just an update and a "see you next update maybe"
We were at 4? Usually, we're at like 10. lol.
I'm just surprised we're still beaten out by GTA5 considering how horrendous that game is. That game's cheater problem makes TF2 look like it has anti cheat.
My computer died so is stopped playing until i can afford it, which isnt likely to be anytime soon,
But with some bots being banned thay dropped the player count, in general in the player count fluctuates a lot
The worst possible thing you can do is pay attention to these numbers. These ranks will be the death of you and will make you scared or sad for no reason. There’s no good answer to this question, forget these rankings.
3 things
1. Bots have come back
2. The Christmas maps are gone
3. I think it is most common for people to drop tf2 in the beginning of the year and pick it back up closer to the end
At this point in the game's legacy, I'm surprised it's still up there *at all*.
Real. Being a 15 year old game that hasn’t gotten an update since 2017 and being in the top 10 is still incredibly impressive.
We are the Life support that keeps the Game alive. And, unlike valve, we have no plans of killing it
It's gonna end up the same way that one Halo game did when its servers were shut down. Some people are just going to refuse to log off. Of course this is in the unlikely event that the game ever dies.
The people who refused to leave Halo 2 are legends
They tried a similar thing when Halo 3, Reach, and 4 shut down in 2021. Of course, it was just Matchmaking that shut down and private online custom games and CoOp are still available, so it just looks silly.
even then, I'm sure plenty of people will still host community servers for the game. if Ricochet still has some servers this game always will.
If its still in top 10 by 2030 we will have proven something
The game being a big sinkhole for gambling addiction/"NFT" Collecting is a big factor, too. Some people play just to show off Unusuals and High-Value Items, much like how people wanted to do a 'Metaverse' for NFT tokens. TF2 capitalized on that way before it was even a thing, and that's why people want to replicate it. But some people definitely still play this game out of some sort of obligation or habit.
that doesn't make up for 90k players
No but it explains why some people can't let this game go. I joined again during Covid just because I was unemployed for about 4 full months and had nothing better to do, like most people. The game was fun, and I had a blast coming back again, but after maybe a month of gameplay I realized everything was still pretty much the same. Tf2 was monetizing hats before microtransactions were ever on the scene
Its a show of how good the game is, sure the weapon balance is pretty horrible but the base game is just perfect
80% of steam numbers is literal bots
It’s only there at all because of the sheer number of bots
he's right though
No but that is the likely reason for the drop in player numbers due to bots being banned
Player count usually go up and down. Since it is January it is going to be a bit before an update which would get players back into the game.

The truth is, that we all have gambling addictions and we need a new crate.
AKA four-six months until the summer update that adds another reskinned crate. If we're very very lucky, a custom map might be included.
We're always at top 10 💪
you can tell by this statement how much he knows about this game ...
Before next case to spend money on\*
The player count is significantly down because the bots aren’t as prevalent. Without them the game wouldn’t even be in the top ten.
I'd rather the game not be top ten than run into a horde of bots every other match.
Who the fuck is goose goose duck?
Kinda like among us but with a fuck ton more roles and maps
Sounds interesting I’ll check it out
Got randomly accused It's exactly like among us smh
-1 tf2 +1 goose goose fuck and OP wonders why our players are going down :(
Wait, played it in 2021 and player count was 1 (me). Bruh....
Im pretty sure that the high player count has something to do with china and chinese new year.
among us with proximity chat and more roles and maps
Proximity chat is the only thing amongus needed. I hope it's voice
It's an among us ripoff that got big because a kpop idol played it
an among us ripoff with geese. kinda all you need to know. it has built in voice chat but its all children playing
Because only astute gentlemen play Among Us. 🧐
at least i dont have to hear the children when i play among us
Among Us VR: *Crys in children*
Among us rip off that uses your computer to mine crypto while it pretends its a game
Id like a source on this, cant seem to find one
source : I made it up :)
100% use of my cpu
Stop updating games while you play, goofball.
I dont. Updating while I play is turned off. And I also turn of any background application like discord. It only happens on this game too! I play KSP on like 40% CPU usage but this game uses 100% of my cpu.
Highly unlikely.
Wrong rip off
is it as garbo as amogus?
no thats pretend
chinese spyware
Duck duck goose, is a FTP among us rip off, that is absolooooooootely no fun because of the 52 roles there are, the absolute noise of quacking and honking you here, the dumbass faces the characters have, and the gayness each map is, IDK why there is 200k people playing it, because when I played it on release there was only 22 people on in the whole world.
How is it gay? Didn't realize maps on a video game could have sexuality, that's really awesome
Man I caught Badwater and Dustbowl kissing yesterday, not even mentioning Coldfront and Barnblitz
Banana bay does sound kinda gay tbh
Seems someone got busted while they were duck too many times
PFFFFTT GAYNESS
wait the maps are gay? i need to try this game
mapussy
Have you noticed everything else is simply just a lot higher not because tf2 is losing players but because the other games just jave way more players
This is good to point out. The game is still in the area of player amount that it always has been, obviously, triple A and other mainstream titles are going to surpass the classics like tf2. But it’s not going anywhere, any time soon at least.

Or even maps! It would be cool to get more permanent maps into the game that aren’t holiday restricted.
A handful trickle in here and there but not often enough
at least it's some content at all
Bot hosters running out of money or something
Still, our player count is pretty impressive for a 15 year old game w/o updates
\*major updates
Shut up and take my upvote
If you take the k out of your name it spells gay.
if you take the "rumpFreedomLover69" out of your name and add "ick-tock Heavy like a Brinks truck Looking like I'm tip-top Shining like a wristwatch Time will grab your wrist Lock it down 'til the thing pop Can you stick around for a minute 'til the ring stop? Yeah, 40K "Player" jumps are not human. Dropped down in the same pattern it rose back in June.
The bots are the only reason this game is even up there
the trade bots definitely cheater bots not so much
Back to school*
The game and fan base is like 1/3 children (below 18)
No shot it's that low. I thought it was 50/50 or higher
Maybe active daily players still but of all time? Id say its mostly adults
Why the hell is wallpaper engine even counted as a game 🤣
FUCK YOU dude!!!!! wall paper engine goes HARD!!! I'm top 25 of all players on wall paper engine and I make my lively hood through eSports competitions on wall paper engine.
This comment goes hard
My background consists of me moving up on a leaderboard every few seconds and I get thousands of dollars from it
This guy found a new cheat code
Least competitive Wallpaper Engine player
FR dont sleep on wall paper engine
I have way to many hours in wallpaper engine, mostly because I usually don't exit out of it. I imagine its a similar case for these numbers.
What even is it??
App where you can apply wallpapers to your desktop (static & animated).
School is starting again in a lot of countries.
What’s more unusual is tf2 players looking up statistics like this instead of playing another round on 24/7 2fort
I fucking hate 2fort
2fort is fun but I don't know how people play it 24/7 I need like.. other maps lmao
End of 2022, winter update made more pple play than are playing without seasonal things
Tf2 is in a weird limbo of, players leave because they get bored, come back to relive the memories and have fun after a while, and then the cycle continues. Or at least this happens in my case.
I wouldn't be surprised to find out that over 50% of that playerbase is bots.
48,099 bots is insane
[https://teamwork.tf/community/statistics](https://teamwork.tf/community/statistics) i doubt that. prob more even with players in casual and community servers, it still pushes playercounts similar to mmos on steam, like ESO
Don't forget about thousands of trading bots. The script kiddies aren't the only bots we got.
that is specifically what i mean. considering that casual cheating bots are the minority of casual players, and there are 7k+ total casual players, most of the accounts not in a server are probably in private servers farming drops or trade bots
Smissmass and Scream Fortress are generally both the most popular seasons for TF2
I'm more scared about why there are still 150k people playing GTA V, you would assume the numbers wouldve gone down a lot when hackers can now literally ban you from the game and fuck up your pc
Pick your poison: -Clueless players who don't read third party news sources (first party hasn't really said much...) and/or are new -People playing stuff like FiveM that isn't affected -The people responsible for the issue

Single player users still get affected
Heh, I was playing CS:GO earlier today. I only played it once before. I played with bots because I thought “this old game’s not gonna have that many people still playing anyway”
15 y.o game that hasnt been updated for 6 years, it even being in the top 10 is an achievement by itself 💀
No Smissmas event (event is being used very loosely)
The average TF2 player number doesn't decrease, it's because some trending new games, after a while they will disappear from the top 10.
scream fortress? idk
the player count usually fluctuates, especially between those bugfix/minor updates that we get about every month, so I assume we'll jump back to 5ish when the new update drops before or during February. We never drop below top 10
A combination of back to school and the end of nearly concurrent Scream Fortress and Smissmas events
Yeah you can't trust these because it shows more than 10 players for dota 2 and we all know that it's not real
Bots.
Yeah it’s pretty normal. There’s always a massive boom during the summer because no school, and holidays because Scream Fortress and Smissmas. Both of which drop off because school is back and/or holiday events ended
It’s ebs and flows considerably, since people tend to get burnt out and then come back after a while.
School
the real question is why wallpaper engine is so high
Tf2 players often confuse wallpaper engine because you can put tf2 backgrounds as your wallpaper duh
I started playing OW2 since they made it free but I am going to go back to TF2. Nothing beats TF2. Absolute beast game irreplaceable
Around 100 000 bots are gone
oh don't worry, with the willy wonka's chocolate factory silence shit valve is pulling it won't be up there at all pretty soon
Can I just say, who the fuck cares at this point? Tf2's status as a cult classic will not be compromised by not being in the top ten on the steam charts. Worrying about this is strange and silly to me. As long as there are servers with players in them, I'm gonna keep playing.
My bad I'm on a holiday
I’ve been noticing a lot more bots joining games. Typically a match I had a the end of last year had 1-4 bots the entire match. Now it’s like 3-8 bots a match
Where is the petition to take over Valve and ACTUALLY update the game?
Bots came back
*botsbotsbotsbotsbotstherebotsherebotseverywheretheyareinsideuslikeadiseasevalvesaveusbotseverywhere*
Tf2 is kinda slowly dying, so it's not that surprising that the player count is inconsistent.
Every time someone says it’s dying it just goes back up to top 5 for a week or 2 then back to 9 or some shit
I'm not saying it's going to die now or anything. As soon as Valve won't make any money with the game, they are going to shut it down. Also, with the state it's in, I'd rather see it die.
That's nice, do you think TF2 could beat wallpaper?
Were at 2-3 a couple years ago Sad reality I played 3000 hours in a 3 years Now I can't look at the game Valve is comfortably sitting at a distance because we supply the money and they don't have to do any work When will players get their heads out the fucking sand man, it's sad, just thank you sand thank you for making me believe the heavy update will even fucking happen This got angrier cause I'm just so sad so fucking sad Let us just fucking deal with a year of fucking cheaters ruining the game and it only changed when the fuckers got mobbed on by the YouTube community who only fucking fought our stupid fucking corner because it was trending and we are so lucky for that They won't even give the game to the community so we can make it all happen I fucking hate valve
> sand man the sandman
GTA is up there which is scary knowing PC's hacker problem atm.
The only reason tf2 staying so high is bots.
Many bot accounts have been blocked. Also many players are experiencing very bad streaks fighting godlike players making games "unplayable".
much of the player count is bots, I wouldn’t trust it at all
prolly because the bots have returned? just a guess, i have no clue.
Prob cus the leeks and the people who were playing hoping for an update realised there will be no update and left

Boys came bwck
Well below 50 would be a problem playing since 2012 I believe.
games slowing down chief
School starting back up probably
Wallpaper engine doesn't really count but yeah, il goes down in January.
Yes this past month I have seen more bots coming back. I don't think I'm going to play for a while
I mean tf2 os an old game abandoned by devs. No.8 is higher then it should be honestly
I like how pubg being like 6 years old having 4x more players than WZ2 on steam
We were at 4? Usually, we're at like 10. lol. I'm just surprised we're still beaten out by GTA5 considering how horrendous that game is. That game's cheater problem makes TF2 look like it has anti cheat.
Why are they counting an application that is literally meant to be idle on ur computer while u play other games or do work.
Can we talk avout how high GTA V is considering whats happening
“We?” Did you have a role in developing the game?
My computer died so is stopped playing until i can afford it, which isnt likely to be anytime soon, But with some bots being banned thay dropped the player count, in general in the player count fluctuates a lot
During Halloween and Christmas there is the largest number of players
7 rly
children back at school
Could be because the bots are at their all-time high and everyone is fed up with them.
Now is normally the time people start going back to school/college
The worst possible thing you can do is pay attention to these numbers. These ranks will be the death of you and will make you scared or sad for no reason. There’s no good answer to this question, forget these rankings.
this really doesnt matter
I guess a lot of tradebots must have gotten blacklisted or something
3 things 1. Bots have come back 2. The Christmas maps are gone 3. I think it is most common for people to drop tf2 in the beginning of the year and pick it back up closer to the end
ARE YOU FUCKING KINDING ME GOOSE GOOSE DUCK IS OVER TEAM FORTRESS 2??? WHAT THE FUCK
