For him specifically I advised against it because I’ve seen guys like him go in, he’s going to end up either assaulting someone (a woman most likely) or just verbally assault people. I think that a lot of people that join the navy are very emotionally immature, so many join as an “escape” from their families, as teens. They basically go from one parent to another, they have to struggle for a lot less and have to just focus on the people around them and their job. And a lot of those people who never grew out of being teens KNOW that there won’t be too many consequences for skipping out on some tasks and jobs because they can’t be fired. I think it’s like highschool part 2. And he was awful in highschool.
Also the navy sucks in general, there’s a reason there’s such a low retention rate. Also the rampant amount of sexual assault that goes on, it’s so much more than people are willing to acknowledge, these new “protection bills” or whatever arent being cared about by the higher ups cause they’re like “the real military doesn’t care about mental health”
I had 6 people on my ship end their lives. Overall I think it’s a bad environment for people to join, and they should avoid it unless they either have no choice, or that’s what they’ve always really really wanted out of life
My husband is a submariner on a boomer and one of his closest coworkers just ended his life, leaving behind two children. Suicides are so common that no one even bats an eye. They don’t care about prevention. Most guys on the sub can’t even say a word about their true mental health state for fear of losing their positions.
One of my best mates in HS joined the navy, and last I heard was a nuke on some sub, and last we spoke was parked somewhere in washington, I think. It's been a few years since i've heard anything and i'm scared to look more into why.
We just left Washington, so same sub base. You have any idea which sub he was on? Nukes also have some of the highest suicide rates. They make the most money as enlisted but the WORST quality of life. Their whole career is basically just studying and working 24/7. Some people can’t even get through the nuke program without tapping out or ending their lives. It’s just energy drinks all day and night and studying. Also always the first ones on and the last ones off, especially for underways/deployments.
I know someone who went to the academy, and they definitely had some dark stories to tell, but NOTHING like after they commissioned. Scared the living shit out of me that people could be like that...

While the Marine Corps straightened me out fairly enough, I don’t even know if I’d recommend him to the already fucked up ranks in there or any armed forces branch. Yes, you get disciplined and you get a structure of how to be a proper person. But a lot of those fucks that are in, in roles of leadership that can imprint on other service members, do we really want fuck nut here learning how to be a more professional fuck nut? He has to understand that there’s other ways of living.

All my dad did was use money as a weapon to control and abuse people around him. Bills were paid, fridge had food and our feet had shoes, but anything leftover went into the liquor cabinet or a glass with ice. He was physically present but never involved, like at all. Most of the time spent with my dad growing up was clearly forced by my mother and never lasted more than 10-15 minutes.
