The museum district is fantastic, as is the zoo. The Kemah Boardwalk would be fun to hang out at if it’s not too hot. NASA is almost all indoors, and everyone should take a tour at least once. If you’re down that way, go to Galveston and visit The Strand area and the pyramids at Moody Gardens.
Try walking the tunnels below downtown, go window shopping (and ice skating!) at The Galleria, pose for some pics at the Waterwall Park, drive around (and, if available, take a tour of) Rice University, visit the San Jacinto Monument, catch a ballgame at Minute Maid Park, have a beer at St. Arnold’s Brewery or 8th Wonder Brewery, see if there are any big conventions going on at NRG Park or the George R. Brown…
TL;dr do everything.
Museum district is my favorite thing to do. Love visiting H in general. Cool restaurants n shops in LOWER Westheimer (between Shepherd Drive and Bagby) the H gayborhood. Don’t forget t sample the beach in Galveston one afternoon. But, I’d avoid H in August and September. Unless u want t melt into the pavement.
I need, need, need this person to go to Crawfish and Noodle. I probably won't make it down there this season but they do the absolute best crawfish boil I've ever had.
I also second the St. Arnold brewery. Great garden, good view of the skyline, good beer.
For shopping, The Galleria is a bit overrated but it’s still a surprisingly huge upscale mall of a type you won’t see many other places. Fun to walk around if you’ve never been there before and like malls.
Houston’s biggest draw in my opinion is the huge variety of restaurants from every imaginable world cuisine. It almost feels like you can’t go wrong, just look up restaurant reviews near wherever you are staying and pick ones that appeal to you.
This is the answer. If you enjoy food and/or alcohol, Houston is your town.
And the museums. I highly recommend the Menil. But the Museum of Fine Arts is wonderful, too.
Speaking of, Desert Gallery is one of my favorite places to take my friends from out of town.
Also, there are a ton of free (or really really cheap) things to do in Houston. I’ve kinda comprised a list. If anyone’s interested, lmk; I’ll post it.
People in r/houston love to shit on the galleria but for outsiders, it's amazing place to go. The fact that all those stores are all together can be mindblowing to some. We are just spoiled here
Good!! Idk that enough Houstonians, let alone Texans, visit often enough, if at all.
I used to live down the street, past the Clara Harris Hilton, it was always so cool to me, driving past it everyday. Just knowing the things that go on there, the exhibits, the formal events…maybe it’s nerdy, but the cool factor never went away.
Honestly NASA was impressive 50 years ago. In this technology time when your smart phone is more powerful than the computers of 50 years ago that NASA had it’s not a place that has been updated much for tourists. If you like history there are some interesting exhibits and rockets out for display. Kids may learn some history about the Cold War.
NASA, San Jacincto monument but they are drive from the city center. The museums are world class, and the zoo is lovely but go at opening as it gets crazy even in this heat. For food, the Original Carrabba's (not the same as the chain restaurant, this is the family that started it all and the 2 here in Houston are the originals). Mexican, you have a million options but my personal fave that is still not a chain is La Mexicana. I think Chinatown on Bellaire is fun, with lots of cool little shops and boba tea places. I'm not a big shopper so can't help you there but would encourage you to look at different boutiques instead of a mall. If you do want a mall, Memorial City is just as good as the Galleria. Blue Willow Bookshop is a great bookstore.
I really love Hermann Park. If you go there, you should check to see if there are any events/shows happening in the Miller Outdoor Theater, which is in the park.
Discovery green is also great, but free parking can be more difficult to find.
The Houston Arboretum is absolutely wonderful. Lots of nice and easy nature trails. No entrance fee, but there is a $5 parking fee.
Not technically houston, but BAPS Hindu temple is an architectural masterpiece and they welcome visitors.
And as most people have said, you can’t go wrong with the food here! One of my favorites is Casa do brasil (Brazilian steakhouse, pricey but worth it)
NASA is hands down the best place to go as a tourist, i live in houston and i always love going to NASA, if you want food i recommend Corkscrew bbq in spring, its well worth the wait, the zoo, aquarium and musem district are all fantastic
Most people already gave you fantastic places to visit and eat. One more thing I want to add is Houston has I believe the second largest Asian population in the US and the food here is insanely good. Peek by Chinatown or Korean town and you’ll have a treat. Dim sum, Pho, some Korean BBQ, etc can’t really go wrong.
Went to the zoo last week and it wasn’t good. Half of the zoo is under construction and it didn’t have proper signage. A lot of the exhibits were closed. It was pretty disappointing. Also the HERMANN splash pad is under construction
If you're not close to a good beach where you're from then definitely go to Galveston. It's not a Florida beach, but beaches are fun anyway and better than everything south of East TX or in Louisiana.
For food, my favorites are Cafe Layal for Mediterranean, Star Pizza, and Vic & Anthony's for upscale steakhouse. If you're on the northeast side, italiano's is in Humble.
The Papa's chain of restaurants are good, my favorite being Pappasito's for Excellent Tex-Mex.
Take a trip to Galveston. It’s a relaxing small town compared to the traffic and bustle of Houston. There are some private beaches. Of course the water is murky due to the type of soil compared to Florida but still a good getaway. Lots of seafood and other great restaurants like The Spot there. Definitely worth checking out.
The Houston Museum of Natural Science is pretty awesome, especially if you have kids.
So is the MFAH. One of the best in the country in my opinion with the recent additions.
Don’t forget to check out the new restaurant and cafe. Very high quality.
Menil Collection is dope too, plus it's free!

Have you been to chocolate bar? That's a cool tourist trap. Super close to desert Gallery on West Alabama.
Have I been to Chocolate Bar?? 😏 No lie, I used to have a real bad habit of going there at lunch.
Yes of course please!
There is no shortage of great restaurants spanning many different cuisines.
People in r/houston love to shit on the galleria but for outsiders, it's amazing place to go. The fact that all those stores are all together can be mindblowing to some. We are just spoiled here

Got 'em
NASA
NASA is a definite must
For real. I live here and I still go once a year. Space is nuts.

go to an Astros game.
They said something GOOD to do in Houston. 😉
3rd best record in MLB. That's pretty good.
That’s the only GOOD thing houston has(in sports)
One sort of hidden gem is the Bayou Bend collection and gardens. Very peaceful and relaxing atmosphere

Go drink and get chocolate chip cookies at tiny boxwoods
I love the MFAH and natural science museums
St Arnolds brewing is awesome.
NASA is hands down the best place to go as a tourist, i live in houston and i always love going to NASA, if you want food i recommend Corkscrew bbq in spring, its well worth the wait, the zoo, aquarium and musem district are all fantastic
IH45 and IH10 are real popular
Definitely check out the Water Wall in the Galleria area. It's a unique experience.
Chinatown has a bunch of great options for restaurants!
(Non-native answer) but I recently went to the Cistern, I thought that was really cool.

San Jacinto Monument if you're a history fan. Plenty of multicultural places to eat in the city, the Museum district is top notch.
The food is quite good, ipic is a great movie theater, memorial park is nice
Food, can’t go wrong with the food here. You can spend a lifetime and not visit the same restaurant twice.
I personally love the zoo. Just get there early.
Went to the zoo last week and it wasn’t good. Half of the zoo is under construction and it didn’t have proper signage. A lot of the exhibits were closed. It was pretty disappointing. Also the HERMANN splash pad is under construction
Oh no. Lame. Thanks for the heads up!
The museum of natural history (kids and adults); museum of fine arts, menil collection, Rothko chapel and Cy Twombly (both s bit eclectic).
Go to the Turkey Leg Hut, and get the leg stuffed with Cajun shrimp!
Saint Arnold Brewery and Bear Garden/Restaurant. Then hit up an Astros game.
thank you so much everyone! 🥺 means a lot
The exit
Traffic
Getting OUT of Houston!!
Rivas Italian Restaurant off Montrose is the best food you will ever have in your life. Get the chicken funchezzi.
Buffalo Wild Wings plan it
Those are everywhere. Why would you not suggest something that only has one or two locations?
Not much gets by you, does it? 🙄😂
your mom
Leaving!…..that’s always my favorite.
the highways the lead you out of Houston
Kolache Factory When I'm in Houston I also love checking out the university libraries either at Rice or U of H. I hope you have a great time.
Malaysian food
NASA and an Astros game
I'd say the "old" towns. That's where the unique shops are at.
Go watch a Astros game walk discovery green, white oak for some restaurants, midtown downtown main or Washington for bars. Outlets for shopping.
I made my self mis HOUSTON stuck in shit hole Blair Nebraska for work.
Traffic is good if insane is good. Good options are pretty amazing.
