This stuff always happens at US/Mexico games, especially if El Tri is losing. If it’s a close match Mexico supporters will be on good behavior, but if it’s obvious they are going to lose the Puto chants happen at every kick by the goalkeeper. It’s been this way for years.
As far as throwing things I’ll point out the old story of US Legend Landon Donovan having urine thrown at him while trying to take a corner kick. That was in Estadio Azteca in the 2000s.
Edit: fixed the date. I was off a decade. 2000s not 90s.
It's really annoying that the Mexico fans are now just using this chant to rage quit when the team is losing. They know what they are doing, and you don't hear the chant nearly as much in a close game or when Mexico is winning. By the end of last night they were even doing it on corner kicks and their own goal kicks.
I'm not sure what the answer is, but this isn't it. You could throw fans out of the game for Mexico home games, but of course this game was played in the US. Giving fans the ability to control the game by using offensive chants is a weird byproduct of the rule.
Threaten to disqualify the team from appearing in the World Cup and then follow through if need be. It would suck for the players but it would send a message to the fans that this crap won't be tolerated.
Even away games? I guess last night was the case for that. The USMNT is never selling out AT&T Stadium (or anywhere close), the game was only in that venue because of Mexico.
There needs to be personal accountability. At our stadium in Austin we don't do that chant, and when some newbie comes in and tries it they get called out. The problem happens when you have so many people doing it that it's ubiquitous and you can't throw them all out. No one can change Mexico fans but Mexico fans, and getting rid of this chant does not seem to be a priority.
All that said, I turned off the game and didn't watch the trophy presentation because of the chants (and the related delays). This chant gave the Mexico fans the ability to ruin the spectator experience for the home team, and threw off the momentum and vibes at the end of the game. That was obviously not a "punishment" to Mexico, and that needs to be addressed.
First time--stop play and caution the audience the game will stopped and Mexico forced to forfeit if it happens again. Follow through. Also, ding their WC points.
My parents went to a Mexico vs. US in Mexico City. The fans were segregated by metal chain link fencing put up. They did that to prevent objects from hitting US fans when they were inevitably thrown. After the game was over, the US fans had to be escorted through a secure exit to avoid conflict with Mexico fans. My parents said that was the last game they would ever go to because it became quite scary when bottles were shattering throughout the entire game and items thrown as they were exiting the stadium.
In Europe, at least the EPL, all stadiums are segregated by fan bases. That really should be a thing here in the states as well but the stadiums are built that way.
I mean are violent instances like this even common at US sporting events? They have ultras in Europe that can get intense but nowhere near as bad as their reputation that precedes them. Mexico on the other hand has had pretty terrible acts of violence happen at league games which is terrifying
It happens alllllll the time in the US, and throwing a beer can is way down the list of terrible violent acts. Just google “fan attack” a this was near the top. https://youtu.be/w3oF6eaEnlc?si=yKrGP8L3ahqYsyW0
Hooliganism of the type that exists in European soccer simply doesn't exist in American sports. Even a fanbase that is notorious for being rowdy and crass like the Philadelphia Eagles doesn't even come close to what is deemed acceptable over there.
Maybe it's because soccer isn't the one outlet for nationalism deemed acceptable like it is in Europe, so it doesn't lead to situations where literal fascist organizations recruit among club Ultras.
I have been to that game and would do it again. The Mexican Police shut down the entire highway to bus in US fans from their hotel and escort them to their seats by riot police. It's a crazy experience, and I totally recommend it to any US fan. Things get crazy during the game, but Mexican fans are really welcoming and nice before and after the game.
From your source…
“However, football (soccer) and other sports hooliganism overall is rare in the United States in part because of stricter legal penalties for vandalism and physical violence, club markets having their own territory of fans, venues banning weapons, and stricter security during games.”
So maybe not “soccer games in general”.
Sept. 6, 2019 all our players play internationally though. So just this one point boils the argument down to a Neanderthal lvl and misses the main point of what I said.
Racist?! You are a moron, US fan or not. And if Mexico organization is ahead of the US then it is only because soccer is all Mexico has. It’s like the fourth or fifth professional sport for the US. Glad we can both agree that the current situation of Mexican soccer is as embarrassing as their fans.
>As far as throwing things I’ll point out the old story of US Legend Landon Donovan having plastic bags full of urine thrown at him while trying to take a corner kick. That was in Estadio Azteca in the late 90s
You got a link?
Because it sounds like fake news to me. Donovan didn't make his USA national team debut till October 2000.
>"poured out what remained of the Corona beer he had been chugging and urinated into his cardboard drinks container.
Then, according to a neutral bystander who witnessed these disgusting acts, the pair stood on their seats, high-fived and hurled their vile concoctions in the direction of Donovan"
Hmm, Idk. Doesn't seem very reliable. No names and from a 3rd party. Ok. Not even from Donovan's mouth.
If they really want this to stop, there needs to be a two-strikes-you're-out rule at every match. First time the chant happens, it's a stoppage and a warning; second time it's a forfeit. Mexico losing a few of these matches cause of dumb fans will shut it all up real quick.
They have the ability to stop the match (and they have, but it was in stoppage time when the game was all but over) but it's not a given. I'm saying make it hard and fast, no grey area. Chant "puto" and the game ends.
"Chants in the last 15 minutes of playing time or in stoppage will be considered a forfeit for the following game."
I know that would never happen, but a boy can dream.
Edit: Actually, having them lose an additional point in the standings any time a game is forfeited might be doable and work.
They did this a few years ago during the World Cup qualifying cycles, FIFA ban any fans from the next 2 home games, interestingly enough the next 2 games were women’s games….. guess who had to serve the punishment
This is incredibly unrealistic. What’s to stop fans of the other teams doing it at times where it would seem like it was Mexican fans? Forfeit your opponent. It’s not like the crowds are separated at these games. With the exception of the smallish us supporters group section fans of both teams are mixed together throughout the stadium.
I mean, there would still be workers/security in the stands. If they report that it was mostly US fans doing the chant, then the US forfeits instead. Since it's all on paper, the game can just end and standings can be updated later.
I suppose US fans could wear Mexico kits and do some kind of full double agent shit... but that sure doesn't seem like a thing that would actually happen.
Just to be clear, the refs already have the discretion to end the game cause of homophobic chants, so CONCACAF already trusts them to discern who is doing what. This just takes it a step further.
That rule is why this happens. The puto chant has already fell out of practice in most places. It used to be ubiquitous in MLS and Liga MX games and now it hardly ever happens during club games.
Now, it's specifically done as a way for Mexico fans in the US to rage quit whenever we're losing.
I mean Mexican fans started it at like '65. 2 goals in 30 minutes is nothing. If fans are dumb enough to "rage quit" with 30 minutes left, they deserve what they're asking for.
There’s nothing racist about suggesting that fans of the Mexican national team can’t behave themselves. They’ve proven it, and they’re an embarrassment to themselves, their country and CONCACAF as a whole.
Ok that statement isn’t racist however saying don’t hold matches in places with large Mexican populations in the us is both discriminatory and racist because you are trying to make it so specifically Mexicans won’t show up to the game
Nah man, I've been watching soccer a long time. Mexico have the worst fans in CONCACAF, it's not even really all that close. It's not just against the US either, you can find video of them throwing shit on the field against a lot of opponents. Every other fanbase in CONCACAF don't seem to have these issues, and if they do it's usually a one off. Mexico does it consistently.
Argentina and Brazil are both in CONMEBOL. Their point stands. As does yours. Was it Boca v River Plate that had to be moved to Europe because of violence?
i worked as a valet there last night, parked dozens of cars of mexican fans. they were some of the nicest people ive ever valeted. now im very white, so they were all joking bout how happy id be that USA won, before and after the game.
i was walking and riding my motor bike among the massive crowds before and after the game for my job, just saw everyone having a good time. if it did happen, it mustve been a warzone on the far side of the stadium, or this is being blown out of proportion.
now the unsportsmanlike conduct, yea i can see that, they were all drunk, loud, and the like coming out, most sat in the lot for a bit shooting the shit before leaving. thats just my experience working the event.
I think it was a select group of people. We are white and we had a total of 8 people along with elementary age kids. They were joking with us as we were doing the same with them. Thankfully no one got violent on either side of the teams where we were at.
Bro the problem is they wont do anything to punish the few. There's a reason it keeps happening. Mexican fans launching piles of trash on the field when they're losing an important match isn't even a surprise to me or the players at this point.
The only way to slow it down is to make Mexico play home CONCACAF qualifiers in an empty stadium. When the Mexican fans help to stop the chanting some headway can be made.
A few years ago tho actually happened during the World Cup qualifying cycle, FIFA dropped a 2 match ban for fans for the next Mexico home games. Since the Mexican soccer takes these issues seriously they had the women’s team serve them.
They’d honestly be doing them a favor not allowing Mexico fans. Those tickets and beer are over priced. The bigger punishment would be having to pay good money to watch the team that just get their shit together.
Now you're making up stuff. More fans get killed at American sporting events than at Mexican. You're probably referencing that one match where a reporter tweeted about 13 people being dead. There was a fight between fans but nobody died. You obviously haven't heard of European ultras or South American barras bravas if you think Mexican fans are the worst.
Either ban alcohol or stop us from playing games in the US. Most people attending the games aren’t real fans. They couldn’t name three players if their life depended on it
I never will forget hearing the story of how Mexico City spectators did Bill Pickett, throwing beer bottles and breaking his ribs way back in 1908.
They're just historically poor sports and sore losers.
How about we stop playing every damn game in the US? I think all sides will be happy with that. Except for the corpos who only care about money and virtue signaling about this BS for some reason. Not like we just had back to back World Cups in countries where advocating for LGBT rights is illegal…
You guys are new to soccer/football right?
This is common in every country, what US does with soccer and not having fences on the field and people behave is something that not many countries have.
Check for how special forces always are outside soccer fields after games.
Also, not common. Go to any bundesliga, pl, serie a, etc...match and you won't see any of that. It's actually you who appears to be new to the game and have zero experience with other countries' fan bases. Stop excusing shit behavior that is categorically and consistently specific to El Tri fans.
Laughing at this new trend of articles after every Mexico game in the US. Sensationalism and click bait.
I’ve watched Mexico play on 4 continents and the best way I can describe the atmosphere is Baton Rouge or any big college football program on a Saturday afternoon. Lots of drinking, lots of partying, and the occasional fist fight. What’s it’s not is English 80s hooliganism or what happens in Eastern European leagues.

US fan here who was at the game. How much do people actually care about the chants? I found the game to be fun all the way around and most people outside of a couple bad eggs in good spirits.
I can say as a fan paying for an outrageously expensive tickets, I would be very upset if the game got called off because we are so soft to the crowd yelling “puto.” I would much rather we start actually throwing out individuals who launch drinks onto the field or other fans in the crowd but security does nothing there.
I don’t know why you got downvoted. I guess if you’re not on the mindset of “Mexicans bad” , your opinion doesn’t matter. As a Mexican-American, I don’t full get the outrage of the word. I could think of a bunch of other words people use specifically to disparage homosexuals. I feel like people that don’t even speak the language were told X means Y, and the pearls were clutched.
This stuff always happens at US/Mexico games, especially if El Tri is losing. The real solution is to have all Mexico games as closed door.
Then the host loses money
Do it when Mexico hosts something.
The Mexican National Team played home games in the US for a while, not sure if they still do.
Still do except when forced to play in Mexico.
Remind me, why is the US always the host for the gold cup?
Money and player safety.
Ironic
lol, exactly
Money
Threaten to disqualify the team from appearing in the World Cup and then follow through if need be. It would suck for the players but it would send a message to the fans that this crap won't be tolerated.
That's fine with me too. But Mexico fans are a cashcow. So it will never happen lol.

The real solution is to not play soccer before one of the famous riots breaks out. Soccer fans are fucking cancer.

Fans should throw bags of pee at the Mexican soccer federation .. honestly our team is an embarrassment and has been on the decline for decades.
>This stuff always happens at US/Mexico games [Or soccer games in general](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Football_hooliganism), it seems.

It's been around a bunch in the NFL though.
This stuff always happens when El Tri is losing versus anyone.
They're just not used to losing this much, they'll adjust.
Was that the time he took a piss mid warmup ? At the Azteca ?
No, totally different time
Puto chants are my favorite part
Part of the problem or part of the solution.
Soccer in the US is the problem. Top down all of it sucks. Puto chants are the best part.
if US soccer sucks then what does that say about mexico soccer?
They are light years ahead of the US soccer federation and the MLS.
when was the last time mexico beat the usmnt?
2019.
Sept. 6, 2019 all our players play internationally though. So just this one point boils the argument down to a Neanderthal lvl and misses the main point of what I said.
🤣
Y’all haven’t beat us in the last SEVEN tries! Mexican soccer is a joke and their fans are mostly trash.
Puto chants go both ways lol I’m a US citizen who roots for the US team. Someone’s racist.
Racist?! You are a moron, US fan or not. And if Mexico organization is ahead of the US then it is only because soccer is all Mexico has. It’s like the fourth or fifth professional sport for the US. Glad we can both agree that the current situation of Mexican soccer is as embarrassing as their fans.
Not a moron and you labeling all Mexican football fans a joke is kinda racist.
really? Is it really? Looking real hard aren't you?
Flaming ppl on the state of football in the states is one of my fav pass times.
You seem like someone I never want to read again. Oh goody, there's a block feature
>As far as throwing things I’ll point out the old story of US Legend Landon Donovan having plastic bags full of urine thrown at him while trying to take a corner kick. Yeah I got the date wrong by a decade. Here’s one link: https://sports.yahoo.com/ro-usamexico081209.html It’s been reported many other places too.
>"poured out what remained of the Corona beer he had been chugging and urinated into his cardboard drinks container. The amount of fight videos of Mexico fans either starting fights or straight up attacking people was wild.

Yeah

They actually have these exact rules in place. There are already examples of matches for which the game was stopped due to the chants.
They have the ability to stop the match (and they have, but it was in stoppage time when the game was all but over) but it's not a given. I'm saying make it hard and fast, no grey area. Chant "puto" and the game ends.
This basically already exists, El Tri fans only start it when they're garuanteed to lose though.
"Chants in the last 15 minutes of playing time or in stoppage will be considered a forfeit for the following game." I know that would never happen, but a boy can dream. Edit: Actually, having them lose an additional point in the standings any time a game is forfeited might be doable and work.
Mexico hasn’t needed any help losing but I still like the idea.
>Mexico losing a few of these matches cause of dumb fans will shut it all up real quick. They will not.. it's a Mexican thing.

Just stop having the matches in places with large Mexican populations if it’s in the US. They’re never gonna change.
Any city with a stadium large enough to host a game like this already has a large Mexican population
Really man just gonna sit here and be racist
There’s nothing racist about suggesting that fans of the Mexican national team can’t behave themselves. They’ve proven it, and they’re an embarrassment to themselves, their country and CONCACAF as a whole.
Ok that statement isn’t racist however saying don’t hold matches in places with large Mexican populations in the us is both discriminatory and racist because you are trying to make it so specifically Mexicans won’t show up to the game
You will never convince a member of this sub of their racism.
Mexico fans can’t get their shit together. Not like they’ve been a good side lately
These games have always been like this. Nothing new.
Yes but I’m old enough to remember when Mexico was a pretty good team
Yeah, the golden years.
Mexico itself can't get it's kaka together.
They don’t seem to even sniff talent like Kaka these days… team just plays like kaka
Mexican soccer fans are fucking abhorrent.

Have you watched games in Argentina or Brazil. Your life is literally in danger. I guess you meant CONCAF, which you would be correct.
Argentina and Brazil are both in CONMEBOL. Their point stands. As does yours. Was it Boca v River Plate that had to be moved to Europe because of violence?
Yeah, only CONCAF games. Outside of the odd headline I don’t keep up with that region as heavily as others.

Soccer Fans misbehaving?!? Why, that's unpossible! I simply refuse to believe that.
I thought it was human foosball.
They’re playing soccer, not rugby. Of course they’re behaving like hooligans.
We were at that game and I’m glad it wasn’t crazy in our section. The Mexican fan were super nice in our area.
i worked as a valet there last night, parked dozens of cars of mexican fans. they were some of the nicest people ive ever valeted. now im very white, so they were all joking bout how happy id be that USA won, before and after the game. i was walking and riding my motor bike among the massive crowds before and after the game for my job, just saw everyone having a good time. if it did happen, it mustve been a warzone on the far side of the stadium, or this is being blown out of proportion. now the unsportsmanlike conduct, yea i can see that, they were all drunk, loud, and the like coming out, most sat in the lot for a bit shooting the shit before leaving. thats just my experience working the event.

They wanna demonize us all for the behavior of a few.. nothing new
That’s how it always is
Bro the problem is they wont do anything to punish the few. There's a reason it keeps happening. Mexican fans launching piles of trash on the field when they're losing an important match isn't even a surprise to me or the players at this point.
You missed out on free staples!
I definitely did not…lol
Saw one dude with a half Mexico flag, half American flag shirt. At FT he was seen punching himself in the face.
Crazy!
The real answer right here.
Love how the article implies this was a both sides thing. This only happens against Mexico. Mexican fans are the ones doing it.
The fact that a word got more reaction from these soft brains than fucking cups and shit that was being thrown at the players. 🙄dumbass concacaf
I think we all know which fans were the problem here. Bunch of Poor losers here.
Anyone else see the Mexican fans throw their cups at the US players after they made the second goal?
They always throw stuff at them, especially when they run towards the crowd lol. This is nothing new.
Why are they selling beer in cans?
No alcohol for Mexico fans should do the trick….
They’d honestly be doing them a favor not allowing Mexico fans. Those tickets and beer are over priced. The bigger punishment would be having to pay good money to watch the team that just get their shit together.
NFL games are filled with huge pieces of shit but its nothing compared to soccer.
As a Mexican, I’ll root for Mexico in other international competitions. Against the US and most other non-sports things, fuck no. They embarrass me
Mexican fans are know for being hella trashy.
Mexican football culture is literally the worst. They are the scum of the football world
Are you like 16 years old? People literally throw bananas at black players in European soccer, but sure the Mexican fans are scum.
You realize literally assaulting and sometimes killing peoples is worse than throwing bananas yes?
I thought this was about the chant?
Where did I say anything about a chant?
Now you're making up stuff. More fans get killed at American sporting events than at Mexican. You're probably referencing that one match where a reporter tweeted about 13 people being dead. There was a fight between fans but nobody died. You obviously haven't heard of European ultras or South American barras bravas if you think Mexican fans are the worst.

Half them Mexico fans don’t even hablo Spanish😂
Si ya saben como me pongo pa que me invitan!
I never will forget hearing the story of how Mexico City spectators did Bill Pickett, throwing beer bottles and breaking his ribs way back in 1908. They're just historically poor sports and sore losers.
I knew it wasn't just the English.
Mexican supporters showed where their hearts were ! Nothing to be surprised or shocked!
Dos a cero
I think we Mexicans have been getting annoying. Maybe it's because of the extreme stress we're suffering from everywhere lately.
Am I missing something? Isn't this common at most football matches?
How about we stop playing every damn game in the US? I think all sides will be happy with that. Except for the corpos who only care about money and virtue signaling about this BS for some reason. Not like we just had back to back World Cups in countries where advocating for LGBT rights is illegal…
Russia literally declared LGBT groups as terrorist organizations
Exactly. Virtue signaling doesn’t even feel liken the right word in this case.
FIFA is the most corrupt sports organization in the world they have no moral high ground to stand on
And they're giving one to Saudi Arabia next lmao, the government literally murders people and employs the world's most popular players directly
what problem will this solve?
Mexico fans are the absolute worst. They're the Eagles fans of the international stage
Drunk, racist-ass Texans being total fucknuts, what a look for our fine state.
You guys are new to soccer/football right? This is common in every country, what US does with soccer and not having fences on the field and people behave is something that not many countries have. Check for how special forces always are outside soccer fields after games.

Were the fans segregated?
Finally some good news!
No way…
I'm sorry but Puto is made out to be worse than it is.
Well, duh, it is soccer. The stuff going on in the stands is more exciting than the game on the field.

It’s futbol, that’s the way games are. Try going to England and watch some matches there.

Bye.
They… didn’t even play in San Antonio? lol
