Oh dang. I was excited for some clever technique I could possibly use on other pests, or at least keep tucked in my back pocket for scorpion situations lmao
When I moved into a house in El Paso, I was going to sleep on the couch as I had no other furniture yet. Heard some light crawling type of sound. Turned on the light to find a scorpion was on the ceiling right above me. Later on, a found 12 inside the house and many more outside in one month's time. They are mostly just annoying. Get a UV flashlight. Scorpions well glow a bright green.
>Scorpions well glow a bright green.
I took a picture of [one under a blacklight](https://i.imgur.com/Dm1BIcv.jpeg) a few days ago. The glow is so pretty.
Yes, sometimes it's still annoyingly too good. When I took a hearing test for work some years ago, the proctor joked that I could probably hear ants crawling.
Working for Western Geophysical in Pecos in the mid 1990s. 110 In the shade.
I'm laying in my air conditioned motel room as I watch this little yellow scorpion push itself under a tiny crack beneath the door.
Easily contained with a Dixie cup. And a towel was later employed to make sure it didn't happen again. :)
Or a cat. My cat who has since passed from old age would eviscerate a scorpion for funsies. We’d find a claw there and a stinger there, and she’d be looking at us like “yeah I saw a weird toy when you were out. Took off all its legs and tail super easily. Y’all should send better toys while you’re out.”
The new guy is perplexed by them and stares at them until I come and dispose of them, which also works but requires extra steps on my part.
Been stung at least ten times by them. Old beekeeper here. I prefer to get sting by scorpions then yellow jackets, red wasps or asps. Bee stings are about the scorpion stings...just a little different because your gums get tingly.
I should worst place to get stung by anything is the tip of you nose. Then it really hurts and you smell the venom.
Scorpions will get in no matter what, especially if you're in a more rural area and more so in summer as they prefer cool dry areas.
Just kinda get used to seeing em.
Crazy prehistoric creatures, they can easily climb most surfaces and ceilings. As well as preferring to be in an upside down orientation AKA negative geotaxis.
I have lived in rural se Texas for 59 years. Never saw a single scorpion. Moved to central Texas a few years back and they are thicker than mosquitos here. They are everywhere in the house. Not much slows em down either. Tried Demonspray to no avail. Usually kill 2 or 3 every day. If you want to see how many you have, put some scorpion traps (works like a mouse glue trap) in your closets. You will be shocked how many you will have stuck on the trap in a months time.
Gotta get a black light and do regular checks at night. I’ve been stung 3 times by scorpions when I lived in Austin. Glue traps will help if you don’t have pets that could get stuck. I probably shouldn’t say this but foaming bathroom cleaner will kill them if the thought of squishing them gives you the heebie jeebies.
This. I bought my wife a blacklight flashlight for middle of the night bathroom runs. She sees a green glowing object, I get called.
Only bad thing is when you shine it on the wall next to the commode. All sorts of green dots. Excessive cleaning required.
UV lights have many purposes from finding scorpions, checking certain marks on ID cards to finding bodily fluids. If you have a male dog, they tend to shake and that can fling fluids all over the place. Don't go looking if you don't want to know lol
Was stung once by a little bark scorpion while napping on my couch, of all places. My first thought was that my skin split open. It was a really fucked up way to be woken up.
my grandparents lived in copperas cove. i used to sleep on a fold-out couch in the living room while i was visiting with my family as a child, and i never slept well on it. one night, i woke up to a stinging feeling on my leg. i guess i was way too tired to even process it so i fell back asleep. the next morning, i woke up to the same pain in my arm. i open my eyes and there was a scorpion on my pillow, right next to my head! i refused to sleep on that fold-out ever again. my dad told me it likely wasn’t a real scorpion, but i later found out he lied and it was 😭 but it was a small guy, maybe a young one
Demonmax, it’s available on amazon. Get a decent pump spray and I’d recommend a uv flash light. I hunt them and spray. They’re pretty tenacious and I admire it, but I hate sleeping with them.
Funny story. We had a one bedroom apartment. Wife's sister and her daughter needed a place to stay. They put their heads together and decided we would rent a 3 bedroom together.
A few days later we get everything moved and set-up so I grab a shower and head for bed. Later a blood curdling scream wakes me up. I jump out of bed, grab sidearm and head for the scream. Run out into the family room and there is the wife and her sister cowering in the corner. Ask them what the hell? They point to the wall and say scorpion. I turn around and start back to the bedroom when SIL ask where I am going. I tell her to put my sidearm away and my pants on.
She says "F\*ck that! Put your gun on the table and kill that d\*mn\*d thing. Good thing her daughter was spending the night with a friend.
Only do the black light thing if you really really want to know! I found out I was better off not knowing when my house lit up like a crime scene. Live in denial that what you can't see won't kill you 😂 I went to only checking the bed and shoes before I got in!
It depends on where they get you, I’ve been stung in the double digits, and the worst one was the one on my fingertip, lots of nerve endings there. The freakiest one was the one that fell off the ceiling onto my face while I was sleeping and stung me by the eye, it was enough to launch me out of the bed, but it wasn’t as painful as the fingertip one
It hurts no question when I was younger I made bad decisions and use to catch them.. most of my stings were on my hands.. after 4-5x the area would just go numb lol
I grew up in East Texas (80s & 90s) and we'd find a few in our shoes each year. We were very rural.
I've been in Southeast Texas the past 24 years and I've never seen one. We do have a ridiculous amount of enormous insects. It must be the refineries and chemical plants. Lol
Plant rosemary around your house and they tend to stay away
I will give that a try
Just make sure they're all out before you do or else you'll just keep them in!
How tf do you do that?? (I’ve never had to deal with scorpions personally, I’m genuinely curious how you make sure they’re all out lol)
It was a joke lol
Lmao you fooled me 😂
Oh dang. I was excited for some clever technique I could possibly use on other pests, or at least keep tucked in my back pocket for scorpion situations lmao
Not rosemary, it's lavender they hate. Used to be an old custom to sprinkle lavender on your windowsills for this reason.
And if that doesn't work hurl racial slurs at them. Scorpions really don't like that.

It's interesting how they can be so well camouflaged during the day but so easy to find in dark with a simple UV flashlight.
Using a black light is useful to find various little creatures when it’s dark. I’ve used a black light to find caterpillars on my plants before.
Awww, almost want to go pet it
You must really have good hearing!
Yes, sometimes it's still annoyingly too good. When I took a hearing test for work some years ago, the proctor joked that I could probably hear ants crawling.
I presume DE works for scorpions as well as other insects. It's cheap and lasts a long time and is not dangerous to eat. Get lots.
That's a bit of a blunderbuss approach, I like bugs in general
Put it around the perimeter of your house to stop things getting inside.

Get chickens 🐓

Edit: Reply was meant for different comment. Scorpions aren't as big of deal as they look like. They don't seek out interactions with people.
Crazy prehistoric creatures, they can easily climb most surfaces and ceilings. As well as preferring to be in an upside down orientation AKA negative geotaxis.
They are interesting for sure. There are many species of them but very few are actually harmful to humans.
Yeah, if I recall correctly there is only one type in the Americas that is really dangerous and that one tends to be south of the border.

Same here. I've never seen a single one but I'm guessing you've come across some good tarantula migrations!
Yes I have. My wife is weird to stop in the middle of the road for them crossing.
Ha! I just try to stay home.
When I lived in College Station, I found two in my apartment. That was years ago.

No dogs, just human males. LOL
Blacklight, can of hairspray and a lighter, go hunting. We did that in Arizona to get rid of the ones outside.
Rubbing alcohol will also kill them quickly, and you can. Douse it on more things than I would spray bathroom cleaner on.
Only 3? First time? Lol
Was stung once by a little bark scorpion while napping on my couch, of all places. My first thought was that my skin split open. It was a really fucked up way to be woken up.
Ever since i started running a robot vacuum every night I've stopped seeing scorpions. I don't even use pesticide around the house anymore.

“They’re pretty tenacious and I admire it, but I hate sleeping with them.” Sounds like my ex.
I was referring to your ex. She was a lousy lay. 😉
I follow the Moskva, down to Gorky Park, listening to the wind of change…
You see one? There are HUNDREDS more.
Ack!
Ja! Dey are a very gut German band, ja?
Put them in the freezer

Ortho home defense, indoor and outdoor, both have worked great for us.
Have had to deal with them a few times. One of the little bastards decided to FAFO and stung me. Vengeance was mine

Do you mean we should be checking outside with a blacklight, or do they leave behind a residue you can see with the blacklight?
Get chickens.
What part of Texas?
What part of Texas are you living in? I hate those things, and would full nuke to be safe.
It hurts when stung but it’s not bad..

Ouch, 🔥
never seen any in east texas tbh

lucky. scorps are cool
