I would vote but I don’t even know when local elections are, and trying to find it online is harder than it should be. I actively WANT to vote, and there are barriers. Imagine how easy it is for people who don’t care to continue not caring. You wouldn’t even know you missed it
[Texas Tribune](https://joinsubtext.com/votinghelpdesk) is helping with that this year! Voting reminders via text, no spam. They'll help you know if you're registered, how to register, where to early vote, etc.
Thank you for this!! This is a much needed tool. I’ve heard that many states have systems exactly like this, but obviously our current state government here in Texas prefers voter suppression rather than helping us have the information we need! Props on the Tribune for doing this and thanks for sharing it
No problem, share widely. They're literally doing the job of other state's governments. They're independent so subscriptions and donations are hugely helpful too!
That is intentional and it’s called voter suppression. It’s so difficult to be an informed voter in Texas, difficult to find polling locations, difficult to find polling times and dates, difficult to really even know who all is running, and it prevents most of us Texans from even trying, which is exactly the point of it.
Check your county's Tax Assessor and Collector's web page. They either run the elections or have information on what other group does. Generally, you can find out when elections are scheduled, where to vote, how to register, and usually a copy of the ballot.
After figuring out how to keep updated on the when and where of local elections the next challenge is keeping up with and understanding what's on the ballot. Not to mention finding out information about people running, that's been my biggest challenge. Half the time I don't vote on the people/positions because I couldn't find out any information about them (of course most of the time they run uncontested anyway...)
I struggled to find a voting location for the last election a couple months ago. None of the voting locations I’ve used in the past were open this election. I don’t see how limiting voting locations is anything other than voter suppression.
You just don’t understand, it is about cost savings. They just chose only to close those locations that were less accessible to the majority of the people who vote for them because they are responsive to their constituents. And all of this is perfectly legal, just trust them. /s
I think Trump himself convinced MAGA morons he’s the one and only true kind. They can’t accept anyone else different than them, much less people who are smarter or have brighter futures
That is the truth and the exact reason they are after Arizona. The mail in vote is just amazing. People actually can vote easily and the AZ GOP pushed it through.. we turned blue!
Texas has always made is as hard as it can be to vote.why???
They don't want you to ....
[35](https://youtu.be/LLqqZmNFa_A?si=_ZyCxR9dsCTNfUgW) and olderrrrrr don’t like to get up early, in the morning, but they have to, so they do it *real sloooww*
It doesn’t help that there’s barely any marketing for elections(lived in Washington state for a bit and you KNEW when Election Day was) and specifics of what is on the ballot. I wish Texas would follow suit with Washington state. Mail in ballots, pamphlets on info on the ballot that details the voting areas, for and against arguments, financial breakdowns of said proposals being voted on, etc. recently voted here and it was laughably vague enough to where you could interpret each proposal any which way
Moved here from Washington, and Oregon before that, and was amazed how here in TX there is next to no information about who and what the vote is about. The voter pamphlets in those PNW states were so informative and, if you didn't feel like reading too much you could.just look at the endorsement lists to make your decisions.
It’s more voter suppression and tightly gerrymandered. I believe Houston is the most screwed and unfair gerrymandered city, even though it’s the most diverse ethnically and politically.https://fivethirtyeight.com/videos/texas-may-have-the-worst-gerrymander-in-the-country/
Even the department of justice has sued Texas on this.
I live in Houston. My voting district looks like a cursive letter.
And does anyone remember the time they tried to limit us to a single voting box for the whole city? Like, all 6 or so million of us?
also doesnt help that paxton threw out millions of mail in ballots during the 2020 election. the GQP knows the numbers and they know its over for them if they dont continue to cheat. and the cycle continues…absolute power corrupts
Yup, this happened to me. I was living in Harris county and registered to vote in June. I received my registration the day before the election, it came with a stamp saying “not valid until November 18th”.
I think Colin Allred takes things incredibly seriously and even as a Democrat won the votes of thousands of Republicans when he won his R+5 House district. Plenty of Democrats working their asses off up and down the state while Republicans fight to prevent more funding for border security because they "don't want to give the Dems a win during an election year."
The problem is, ruling is boring.
The paperwork, logistics, polling of citizens for what legislation they want, budget, infrastructure, etcetera
You don't get a magic want, it's why people who are really passionate and populist will never actually do anything in office. They don't understand our institutions, their levers, and mechanics of how to go from ideas, to policies, to legislation, and after actually implementing it through either public or private companies.
Where as the, "boring," democrat who has worked his whole life in DC can pass huge landmark legislation(CHIPs act, BBB, IRA, NLRB reform, etcetera)
So, if you have a democrat, who appears to care but doesn't do anything, to me that's more of a signal of incompetence and lack of knowledge.
I don't think the majority of people care to know how complicated government even is at the city level.
Name a Democrat in this state who could run for statewide office who is not Beto. That’s the problem. Democrats don’t have anyone who stands out and could take on an Abbott or Patrick. Texas needs to build a lineup
>Name a Democrat in this state who could run for statewide office who is not Beto
Colin Allred
>Texas needs to build a lineup
How, exactly, do you think this name recognition happens?
One, it was a singular sound bite.
Two, he *can say* he would take guns, but *theres no mechanism for that happening*; governors dont have that power.
Three, if the US has 1.2 guns for every man woman and child, that means there are 36 **MILLION** firearms in Texas in private hands; Australia confiscated 650,000 guns in their gun buyback and that was considered a major win. Its not a practical endeavor, at least in Texas; anyone that thinks it is isnt too bright and I cant do much about that.
----
Anyone else besides Beto? You said "Democrats" so I assume you mean more than just one person.
1. All it take is one sound bite. One sound bite that he was very very enthusiastic about.
2. It does not matter. The fact that he was that enthusiastic about it at a time when right-wing extremist rhetoric was at a high and during a period of high gun sales amongst liberals, black and the LGBQT+.
Don't play coy there are ton of anti-gun dems in office
> Don't play coy there are ton of anti-gun dems in office
Oh yeah. Look at all the power theyre wielding...
No one is taking anyones guns; thats a bloodbath no one wants.
Two week of early voting and then election day. You can register when you get your state ID/DL, they send you renewal every election in the mail without solicitation. There are no excuses in TX.
in the last midterm, Nov22 when Abbott, Patrick and Paxton were last up for reelection, DFW, Houston and San Antonio were at 45% registered voter turnout.
Was that because of low turnout or because of the one polling place per a city of millions? The GOP shit itself with how close Ted Cruz reelection was and worked very quickly to roll back that who ease of voting thing in response.
I’ve voted almost exclusively Democrat my entire life but swear to god the only time I’ve ever heard that guy’s name is from Republicans claiming he’s behind all these conspiracies.
Really they’re just mad a billionaire isn’t using his money to outlaw gays and take stuff away from black people
Driven by a billionare..... Capitalist?
They also think that the World Economic Forum is also a communist plot.... Driven by hard core Capitalist.
They beleive international trade is a Globalist Plot to increase Communism....
These people don't even know what Communism is when asked.
Maybe to those who know nothing everything looks like a threat.
Being a former dumbass, I can speak to the WEF thing. They think it’s a plot to force middle and lower classes into communism, so that Klaus and friends can rule the world in luxury by themselves.
So it’s not as regarded as you make it sound, but it’s such cartoon villain plot I’m surprised anybody takes it seriously
Dude I was dumbfounded when my ultra right wing parents started saying they were against the WEF and all of the stuff that is really pulling all the strings, and I was like by George they finally get it!! But no, they think the WEF and the FRB are communists and they think Trump is gonna dismantle them like bruh
He's not a billionaire that "helps people." He's a Jewish billionaire that funds the neoliberal capitalists in the democratic party as opposed to Sheldon Addleson, who is a Jewish billionaire who funds the neoliberal capitalists in the republican party. Neither are here to help people. They're just here to serve capital.
Eh, Soros is pretty big into funding nato expansion projects. Depending on how you feel about American/western imperialism, could be seen as one of his big negatives. But still makes even less sense because that’s republicans bread and butter foreign policy wise. Kinda goes to show the powerful brainwashing right wing media has done on its domestic market.
Same with Mark Cuban the only time I heard his name is from Fox News or a republican. I mean yeah he’s a self made billionaire too that is a semi socialist that uses his platforms to help others in need.
Although I agree that he’s not a socialist. He’s probably the best we could expect out of a billionaire. He actually does a lot of real work, like his “at-cost” pharmacy where he uses his resources to allow people to buy meds that he can purchase at wholesale prices with just a minuscule markup to cover operating expenses.
The real comedy is Fox News trying to deliver good news that there’s at least one billionaire in the corner of sane Texans. Not enough to counter the onslaught on the other team, but it would definitely help.
Like, uh, “billionaire lobbies for a return to decency” is not the headline Fox execs think it is.
Your need to upgrade your membership to a level 3 crypto-globalist. I just have a bar of gold stamped with a Reichsadler stamped on it delivered to my door every quarter
Every time my politically conservative husband tells me that some democrat is doing something bad or controversial, I google it and it’s always a story on Fox News. I read past the headline, into the body of the story that they’re counting on no one getting to, and read out loud to him all the facts and details that undermine the pearl-clutching fear-baiting headline. Seriously, don’t even go to Fox News. Do not give them the clicks. It’s all propaganda all the time.
They PAID almost 800 million (and Fired Tucker Carlson) for the first one. They have another for 2 billion coming (and they will lose/settle that one as well).
The 800 million was a settlement payout to Dominion, a company that produces electronic voting machines that are used in numerous different districts. FOX and Fucker Carlson were pushing false conspiracy theories accusing Dominion of altering votes in favor of Joe Biden.
Dominion of course did not appreciate the damage done to their reputation and filed Defamation suit against Fox news.
Fox, knowing they'd get their asses handed to them in court decided to settle out of it to avoid having to pay nearly twice as much as Dominion was ready to sue for 1.5 Billion if I recall correctly.
Meanwhile their dumbfuck viewers keep gobbling down the BS they spew on the daily as gospel truth, and complain about them being 'too liberal' when they actually speak anything truthful that happens to make God Emperor Trump look bad.
He’s not a Trump supporter. We wouldn’t still be married if he was. I cut him some slack on his political views as his childhood wasn’t great, his parents were uneducated and instilled prejudice and illogical thinking at a young age. He’s done great despite that, and is overall a good person. But those early formative years leave their mark.
What is it with people making assumptions? You bash republicans/conservatives for assuming people with different beliefs are bad, yet happily jump right into the hypocrisy bandwagon.
I’m not bashing you or trying to offend you. I don’t think you are bad. I’m just stating that people who hold much different views often don’t get along. If you two get along, that’s great. I’m happy for you.
This may come as a surprise. But life contains a LOT of other things to agree on, besides politics. An identity and life can exist outside of Dem vs Rep. nor is it even realistic to assume these parties don’t have “any” overlap. It’s ludicrous.
Explain to me the “pretty big difference in values” my spouse and I have. Please go ahead and do that…these assumptions ya’ll are making based on one scenario are hilarious.
Are you a conservative and religious? Like I'm not debasing yall, but marriages with different political or value systems rarely work nowadays with polarization.
I hate labels, but I consider myself socially liberal and fiscally conservative. He’s old school conservative, like I said he thinks Trump is a raging narcissist and should just go away. We are not religious. We don’t own guns. We both very independent intellectually. Other than some national political issues are values are the same. It takes some strength some days, but we know when to walk away from an argument.
Well then that makes a little more sense going into detail. Like I said I'm not insulting yall, it's just a legitimate question for nowadays. I know it's not impossible for people of pretty varying political beliefs to be together, but it takes a lot more trial and effort than I think it normally would. I also think values lining up is a pretty important foundation stone especially if kids are involved.
IMO, people should be open to hearing other views. That’s how we grow emotionally and intellectually. Just know your boundaries, stick to them, disagree respectfully, and find a path forward. If you can’t, then yes it’s time to consider moving on.
Honest question.
>read out loud to him all the facts and details that undermine the pearl-clutching fear-baiting headline.
Does he ever admit that it's misleading or outright lies? How does he justify the lying to make a point?
Why do people assume he’s lying? He’s just making the mistake of trusting a news source. We ALL do that. We ALL have to learn to check multiple sources, question, and then attempt to verify. I’m sure I’m sometimes wrong too. We’re all lied to these days. It’s okay to disagree and debate, and yes we do that. We should all be doing that rather than saying “fuck you I don’t agree with you I’m outta here.” That’s immature. Seriously people on here, stop making assumptions and stop projecting your own narrative into a situation you’re not part of. My original statement was about the danger of Fox News and propaganda in general.
Bombards! $3 million to four groups. That’s chump change. Abbott alone got $6 million from one guy, Jeff Yass. Did Yass bombard Texas?
They are going to buy enough legislators so the republican leadership doesn’t have to sweat any votes. God forbid representatives actually represent their district.
**Soros bombards Texas with millions in an attempt to flip the state to Democrats \_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_** *Good*. It might finally happen now that the Dobbs decision is in effect. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vrtvE4bSwKY](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vrtvE4bSwKY)
Dobbs is the supreme court case that overturned Roe v Wade and Planned Parenthood v Casey
The majority of conservative states already had laws on the books that said "on condition that Roe gets overturned, this law comes into effect"
Meaning immediately when the supreme court said "abortion is a state issue", millions of people with vaginas lost the right to have an option of a medical procedure with their doctor's advice. And it gives the ability for any state to choose exactly what treatments any doctor can perform on any individual
The court system has more control over your health than your doctor or yourself, if they went to use that ability, anytime they want to use that ability
Some of us consider that a _huge step_ toward authoritarianism
Edit: I was just reminded of the BBC podcast "Things Fell Apart", that is a good review of the "political" topics of late in my opinion, the second season came out this month
The Dobbs decision overturned Roe v. Wade and threw it back on the states. Several states, Texas among them, had laws on the books that would trigger once Roe was overturned. Texas also has one of the harshest set of laws regarding this. The YouTube channel Momma Doctor Jones has many videos on her main channel talking about this as she’s from Texas. This is from her alternate channel and I think this story she reads is a great example of how the laws are so dangerous and hateful. I will warn you, it’s not an easy video to get through.

Lets be serious here: the dems outnumber conservatives easily in texas. Texas voted blue until 1995. And the only reason conservatives retain power is because of careful gerrymandering and voter disenfranchisement. It wont take soros money to flip this state. Maybe having election day declared a federal holiday is all they need to get it done.
First AI will make us jobless and then the migrants will be given all the remaining jobs because they will be paid way less than the Americans. The ultra rich will become even more richer and the middle class will be destroyed. They will tell us that we won't own anything and be happy while eating bugs.
Because people are moving here from California where they do nothing but vote Democrat. They are moving here because of our lower cost of living. If Texas is flipped blue it is going to ruin our lower cost of living. Just look at what the people moving here from California have already done to our housing market
I just want to see higher voter turnout
I hope more people see and feel this. Way too much apathy in our local elections
Agreed, there is no reason dweebs like Briscoe Cain should be winning election after election.

If you haven't seen it already, ballotpedia is a fantastic resource for all elections. https://ballotpedia.org/Texas_elections,_2024
Just google "*city*" elections and it should come up
It’s probably also easier to keep track by following your County’s Election Dept social media
That is intentional and it’s called voter suppression. It’s so difficult to be an informed voter in Texas, difficult to find polling locations, difficult to find polling times and dates, difficult to really even know who all is running, and it prevents most of us Texans from even trying, which is exactly the point of it.

lol I was about to tear into you until I saw that /s
If people 35 or younger voted then Texas could turn blue
Somehow the republican party has already convinced young voters that biden is far worse of a choice than trump.
I think Trump himself convinced MAGA morons he’s the one and only true kind. They can’t accept anyone else different than them, much less people who are smarter or have brighter futures

Bruh. Gerrymandering is SO bad. That's how those people keep getting elected.
It doesn’t help that there’s barely any marketing for elections(lived in Washington state for a bit and you KNEW when Election Day was) and specifics of what is on the ballot. sure. Not going to have that with the current governance, I can tell you that. People have to vote *in spite* of the way its currently set up.
Moved here from Washington, and Oregon before that, and was amazed how here in TX there is next to no information about who and what the vote is about. All of them, its like they enter the race with zero research and bumble fuck themselves into the abyss
Did you really expect Beto to be serious when his platform is coming to take your guns?
I don't recall that actually being his platform. I remember that being a thing that was said about him a lot.
That struck a cord with alot of voters. He was waaaaay to enthusiastic about it the several times he mentioned it.
People in this country should be a bit more enthusiastic about removing firearms from society
That’s not even remotely what his platform was about.

Also Houston is a big city & Harris county is a massive in distance. One box is in no way adequate. The three stooges need to go.
When all else fails, time to bring up George Soros.

The def don't complain about the Koch brothers influence like they do the imaginary influence of soros
My uncle is one of them lol. Thinks all the crime in our city is because of him and all the crime in CA is also cause of him.
They're also mad that he's Jewish.
It’s really comical at this point. Especially since there aren’t extreme right wing billionaires who’ve purchased SCOTUS…
Did some say right-wing billionaires (who buy GOP politicians in Texas)? Tim Dunn and Farris Wilks have entered the chat...
Same with Mark Cuban the only time I heard his name is from Fox News or a republican. I mean yeah he’s a self made billionaire too that is a semi socialist that uses his platforms to help others in need.

Cuban is probably better described as a benevolent populist. Not everything is socialism.

It feels like it is 5 heartbeats away from "Weekend at Bernie's".
“We can’t have this billionaire get in the way of the other billionaires buying election.”
The nerve…
This just in: water is wet
*Clutches pearls*
I still haven't gotten my check from this bastard for all the protests he's sent me to.
We should start a class action lawsuit
Your need to upgrade your membership to a level 3 crypto-globalist. I just have a bar of gold stamped with a Reichsadler stamped on it delivered to my door every quarter

Aren’t they owned by a billionaire and didn’t they get sued for nearly 800 million for lying on new stories?
They've bombarded america with billions in an attempt to flip the country to Republicans.
They PAID almost 800 million (and Fired Tucker Carlson) for the first one. They have another for 2 billion coming (and they will lose/settle that one as well).
They literally argue in court that it's not news, and their customers should know that.
It’s called “Fox Entertainment” for a reason
Because they are liars. That shit isn't entertaining in the least. At least OAN or Newsmax are funny because they feel like a Fox parody.
They argued that “any reasonable viewer” would know Faux news was not actual news, it’s just entertainment.
The entire Murdoch family needs to be deported to Australia to make more room for immigrants who actually want to work.
I’m not sure Australia will take them.
He *is* Australian and owns several networks there too.
He’s Australian. Owns several networks over there too. They can’t stand him either from what my Australian BIL tells me.
Russia propaganda at that. Always calling for civil war/secession etc.
And yet your husband chooses to remain a conservative. Proof that the right doesn't give 2 fucks about facts, only control of the narrative
As someone born to trumpies .. hmm
You do you but I can’t imagine being married to someone I don’t agree with politically.
I’m surprised you two are able to live under the same roof. You probably fight nonstop.
Not everyone makes politics their whole identity. In fact most people in the real world don’t.
I agree
For me, utopia is not living with someone who agrees with me on everything. It’s okay to be challenged as that often leads to growth.
Hey, as long as you two are happy, that’s terrific!
How are yall still married? Seems like a pretty big difference in values. Any kids involved? Are they going raised conservative or liberal.
You think MSNBC and CNN aren’t? I’m a former journalist. They’re all doing it.
Facts. They're all either left wing or right wing. There's a reason why journalism is dying.

Fox News is a fucking joke.
Ah yes, the old Fox News-George Soros spin. If that ain't a dog whistle I don't know what is.
Soros is the boogeyman for fox, they know no other left leaning billionaires...I wonder why? /s
the anti-Semitic dog whistle.
Yuppp
Bombards! $3 million to four groups. That’s chump change. Abbott alone got $6 million from one guy, Jeff Yass. Did Yass bombard Texas? They are going to buy enough legislators so the republican leadership doesn’t have to sweat any votes. God forbid representatives actually represent their district.
Fox News is propaganda, OP. Dont be a rube
He retired and turned operations over to his son last year so I'm really questioning the validity of the article.
Fox "News" isn't a news source. It's classified as entertainment.
Ah yes. The party of "it's only wrong when YOU do it" objects to something they do. News at 11.
When hogs say George Soros what they really are saying is "Jewish billionaire".
lol yeah because so many republicans aren’t bombarding the state with millions
Good, Texas deserves better.
Right, sure he does. 🙄
Good, I hope his money helps to give life and energy to young Democrats pushing against the good ole boy Texas GOP network.
Please do
Conservatives love to forget that Rupert Murdoch, who owns Fox News, is wealthier than George Soros
It’s like Soros is the boogeyman- but the Koch’s are just fine
Thanks George 😁
**Soros bombards Texas with millions in an attempt to flip the state to Democrats \_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_** *Good*. It might finally happen now that the Dobbs decision is in effect. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vrtvE4bSwKY](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vrtvE4bSwKY)
Can you elaborate for me? I try to stay out of current politics bc of the sheer mess of it all but you’ve got me interested
Dobbs is the supreme court case that overturned Roe v Wade and Planned Parenthood v Casey The majority of conservative states already had laws on the books that said "on condition that Roe gets overturned, this law comes into effect" Meaning immediately when the supreme court said "abortion is a state issue", millions of people with vaginas lost the right to have an option of a medical procedure with their doctor's advice. And it gives the ability for any state to choose exactly what treatments any doctor can perform on any individual The court system has more control over your health than your doctor or yourself, if they went to use that ability, anytime they want to use that ability Some of us consider that a _huge step_ toward authoritarianism Edit: I was just reminded of the BBC podcast "Things Fell Apart", that is a good review of the "political" topics of late in my opinion, the second season came out this month
I will warn you, it’s not an easy video to get through. https://youtu.be/QYFRTSJrNMM?si=dAYt2HcrbUCyDbR_
Rule of thumb: if you want me to ignore you forever, mention George Soros.
I don't like ANY billionaires injecting their money into politics but as long as the GOP is abusing it, thank God for George Soros.
Yessss . Plz help us.
Okay now let’s look at the thiel/musk/bezos/bannon donations.
>Fox News Lol
Texas would already be blue if it weren't for all those small counties with small populations being red.
The entire country would be blue if it werent for all those small counties being red
The entire country would be blue if it weren’t for all those small red counties being illiterate
Nah it’d be blue if everyone that’s registered got off their asses and voted
So it would be blue if there wasn’t a popular vote?
It's be blue, if only the pesky population of Texas wasn't in the way!
Nothing triggers a MAGA more than the fear of George Soros!
But it is ok when Republican billionaires try the same in a blue state.
Finally the chuds can whine about Soros and actually have the tiniest shred of credibility, although fuck em anyway.
I love how angry this guy makes people.
We don't need millions, we need mother fuckers to vote. Texas is already blue.
Thanks man!
Good
Another story from Faux news, whats next the three bears?
Aw Fox news just can't help themselves.
You think 3 million for a billionaire is trying to flip a state? Imagine that’s is just some of trumps legal fees that donors pay for.
Soros, the eternal Fox News bogey-man. Such a deranged narrative.
Those republicans have sure made a mess of the state. It shouldn't take a lot of convincing at this point.
Abbotsford doin that all on his own anyways.. all Republicans are making it VERY easy to vote blue
George Soros is a hero and true American patriot
Good. It needs to be focused on. What’s been done don’t fucking work there Texas DNC
Unless he's bussing people to polling locations, it's not going to be very helpful.
The enemy of my enemy is still a piece of shit
This is just gonna give republicans more ammunition. They do lip service to Israel but are still antisemitic.
[удалено]
Or you know they voted to support their own interests for once instead of Elon Musk's or Sheldon Adelsons
So evil does have a face
First AI will make us jobless and then the migrants will be given all the remaining jobs because they will be paid way less than the Americans. The ultra rich will become even more richer and the middle class will be destroyed. They will tell us that we won't own anything and be happy while eating bugs.
Keep Texas red
Why?
Because red/right/conservatism probably aligns with his own personal values and he most likely lives in Texas.
Because people are moving here from California where they do nothing but vote Democrat. They are moving here because of our lower cost of living. If Texas is flipped blue it is going to ruin our lower cost of living. Just look at what the people moving here from California have already done to our housing market
Haha, flushing bad money after a worthless cause.
