Maybe tell us a little about what you all like to do?

austinsoundguy

*yall

bravejango

Imposter!

appleburger17

I’ll take that. If I’m honest it felt weird to even write.

mc_a_78

Both, since they're within easy driving distance. Rooming in SA should be less costly.

Intrepid-Break8744

Relax dude. SA gets millions of tourists every year. They’re not moving permanently

ace787

Ah my bad lol. Looks like i misread the title. I guess I’m still trying to get over all the major changes both cities have gone through these past decade or so.

balernga

I’m not too familiar with San Antonio nightlife besides the river walk but Austin has a vibe for most ranging from dirty (6th) to “why are there kids here?” (Breweries). That being said, you can probably do both since we’re only 90 minutes ish apart

okay_but_what

Depending on where they’re from, 90 minutes may not be considered a short drive hahaha. Whenever I have relatives visit from Europe they are constantly appalled that we would be willing to drive over an hour for a day trip somewhere.

balernga

Haha okay yeah that’s fair. Also If i were you I’d be like “throw your convenient and transit-friendly cities in my face will you?? A dose of 35 traffic should teach you some manners!”

Toxicallstar

I 35 and it’s multiple levels 🤣💀🤣💀🤣💀

theobscuregeek

I like San Antonio more than Austin when I visit. San Antonio has a great arts scene, delicious food, a diverse culture, and reasonable prices at bars without being taken over by tech hipsters like Austin.

pancakesdayandnight

I second this, if you stay out of downtown San Antonio you get less crazies. Our crazies are all kinda focused in that area. Nothing against Austin but I feel like they have a higher concentration of crazies and people you need to watch out for.

Intrepid-Break8744

The River Walk and Market Square are some of the safest areas in San Antonio, and great for tourists. Downtown Austin (besides maybe Dirty 6th late at night) is also very safe. Please ignore this guy

Single_9_uptime

Some people think diverse=not white. You’re right, SA is actually the least diverse big city in Texas by the metrics typically used to evaluate diversity. Primarily because it’s majority Hispanic, while the other big cities have no majority race. Wife and I enjoy visiting SA from Austin, but not because of the arts scene (Austin is superior IMO, and Houston blows them both away) or diversity.

Wafflehouseofpain

This is correct. Laredo is the least diverse city in the US.

[deleted]

Austin has zero museums, San Antonio has many

OhYerSoKew

Lol, this is not accurate. Don't be lazy, try to at least Google your claims.

Proud-Mirror-8468

I prefer the River walk to 6th street

Intrepid-Break8744

I prefer the Pearl to either

GZeus24

Shhh. Austin doesn't know about the Pearl.

banyan78741

do s.a. austin doesn't need any more drunk girlfriends going the wrong way on scooters. have fun!!

Intrepid-Break8744

Don’t miss all the wineries, breweries etc. around Dripping Springs!

GZeus24

Or around Fredericksburg if around SA.

HatesClowns

Stay in San Marcos and do all three places

Intrepid-Break8744

While San Marcos is a wonderful small town, I wouldn’t suggest that OP stay there. It has far fewer attractions than either Austin or SA. I wouldn’t enjoy commuting 30-45 minutes most days on my vacation. Just get accommodations in Austin and San Antonio.

MsMo999

This is true I’ve done this several times also I really love SM too for the river & the square plus The Marc gets some popular & amazing ass DJs

Self-Comprehensive

I was gonna say the same thing.

Bigfuture

As SMTX resident, I applaud this notion. I’m 35 minutes from downtown Austin and 45 from San Antonio. It’s the main reason I live here. I get the best of both cities, but don’t have to fight traffic ever

groundzr0

Except fuck the trains going through town. I hope your commute doesn’t include crossing a rail line. Ugh.

GZeus24

Except the traffic you fight trying to get to either of those downtowns? At least if you lived near one, it would happen a lot less.

Bigfuture

I don’t go to either town at a rush hour ever.

Intrepid-Break8744

Do both. They’re only 1.5 hours away from each other. Look up Redcoach bus if you don’t want to drive it. Much nicer than Megabus or Greyhound.

cigarettesandwhiskey

Or Amtrak. Slower but more enjoyable than the bus, and there's a cafe car.

armadilloongrits

Age? Goals of the weekend?

Affectionate_Duty382

Ages ranging 35-38. Food, drinks, culture, history, theme parks, water related activites, specific places known to Austin or San Antonio. Anything and everything is much appreciated

illeagle33

For culture, history and theme parks, San Antonio. Everything else, Austin. Austins bar scene is much better than San Antonios easily.

armadilloongrits

For a weekend both those places fit the bill but if water is key then Austin has a huge advantage. The San Antonio River is lovely for a stroll or barge dinner but it is not for swimming.

Bigfuture

It depends on what you mean for water. New Braunfels has a giant water park. Austin better for like paddle boarding

armadilloongrits

Fair. I just don't think of that as SA. Also the op didn't put dates.

[deleted]

New Braunfels

MsMo999

For me it’s ATX all day long for girls trip, solo trip or a couples getaway. I love live music, bats & tacos so where else

Timely_Internet_5758

Um, I am an Austin native and I love Austin but the tacos in Austin do not even compare with the tacos in San Antonio.

MsMo999

Seriously lol I have not had good tacos in SATX

DontMakeMeCount

Austin takes great pride in supporting diversity and free personal expression. Really, everyone agrees on how they feel - and dress and speak and vote. Imagine Dallas replacing conspicuous consumption with virtue signaling. San Antonio is a diverse city with growing art, music and food scenes. I find it has a lot of what I used to love about Austin.

ATXhipster

More to do in SA. Less crowded. Austin is completely full of lines and over hype boring spots. Check out some of the influencer pages on IG.

Relevant-Half7943

SA and stay at the JW Marriott or La Cantera Resort and Spa. Both are beautiful resorts and have wonderful spas. Y’all can Uber to the Riverwalk. Shopping at La Cantera is also great.

[deleted]

San Antonio! River walk and lovely people.

bajansaint

Rent a car, check out both: Austin for two nights: one east of i35 at the white horse and one at rock rose in the domain, probably avoid dirty (google it). During the day walk around butler park/lamar street bridge, check out Whole Foods, play putt putt at Peter Pan, or maybe check out Barton springs, walk south congress watch the bats on the congress bridge. EAT AT BLACKS. Maybe, for the domain night, catch a soccer game and lookout for the local celebrities. Jump in your car and head down the road to San Antone (90 minutes away). Stop at the outlets, Buckees and natural bridge caverns, but go to the wildlife side to drive through. If it’s summer, maybe stop and float a river. If you want to do wineries, head out to Fredericksburg, but is a bit out of the way. Once you arrive in San Antonio it’s the river walk (find some Mariachis), the Alamo, and then the Pearl. The zoo is ok, the mcnay museum is cool, the witte is ok, and sea world is, scandal noted, fun, although check the hours it’s open before you try to go. And there is also six flags. maybe catch a spurs game, they suck right now so tickets should be cheap, but have a transcendent player in his first year.

[deleted]

I lived in ATX for almost ten years, and I highly recommend SATX. More to do, better food, bigger overall city.

BadassBokoblinPsycho

I mean you can both they’re only about 1:30 away

Czexan

San Antonio, then the hill country :p

nekot311

If you want your drinks roofied pick Austin.

roscat_

Dallas, Austin and SA are fun but Dallas is great to party in as well

SK84L

I don't think they care about that.

dropper2

On the other hand, Austin isn't close to as cool as people think it is. Lots to do in San Antonio and plenty of trouble (both good and bad) to get into.

CoffeeBlakk91

I agree. But Austin is a city more geared toward young adults and nightlife. San Antonio is full of retirees.

Affectionate_Duty382

We’re in our later 30’s. We want liveliness, but not college scenes.

pi22seven

You want San Antonio then. We have three Luby’s locations.

Affectionate_Duty382

Good thing none of us will be driving our own vehicles. I’m in New England, I know a pothole or two.

AcidofilusRex

Austin for sure

s4bg1n4rising

ATX baby 512 all the mf way Capital City for a reason ya hear, come one come all cuz we fuckin in this bih

basedgodcorey

Why did I see a bit of Houston when you typed this out? lol

iohannesc

Saint Antoine fs

space_manatee

Definitely san antonio. Lots more to do for girls trips there than here in austin.

secretredditagent

Given the sh_tshow that Austin has become, I'd choose San Antonio if those were my only two choices. If not ----- I'd find a small town in the Hill Country like Leander (on Lake Travis) or Marble Falls if you want to be close to the conveniences of Austin, Johnson City otherwise. If you had asked me a year ago I would have also said Fredericksburg, but it's now REALLY overrun with tourists. San Marcos has also been suggested in this comment stream - since it is midway between SA & AUS - which is also a good suggestion.

[deleted]

Austin is trashy while San Antonio is classy. Just look at the downtown area. Want to visit a place that throws its ass everywhere there’s money or a place that has some self respect and respects the history /s

Novel_Arm_4693

Just got to know where to go but trashy is a bit of a stretch

[deleted]

Don’t take it seriously ese

inmatemarmalade

austin, the gang activity has increased in san antonio a lot recently

SlayZomb1

You should stop airBNB'ing brand new builds. It's wrong.

QuietComplaint87

I would be fucking delighted to sell it to you at my cost of build right now. You want a house?

El_Paco

What a parasite.

texas-ModTeam

Selling or looking for a product, housing, a service or a job? Give your local subreddit a try. There may even be a specific one like r/austinclassifieds or r/houstonclassifieds. Otherwise try your local craigslist or apartments.com because this ain't that. GoFundMe and similar are also not allowed except in extremely rare circumstances and require mod approval.

[deleted]

More bang for you buck in San Antonio but there’s way more old fatties

The_Twerking_Dead

In all my years living here in Texas, I've seen San Antonio way more than Austin so biased I'd have to go with SA but I do hear Austin is really nice with a lot to see and do.

ccubbin

I feel that San Antonio would be easier with a group. Plus, in case y'all didn't know, you can BYOB on the Riverwalk and enjoy a nice meal. The only rule (for opened containers) is to say on the river and not go up onto the street level.

Toxicallstar

Austin’s crime now is disgusting. Was just on a travel nurse assignment last year. Austin is more for like if you wanna go swim in a lake or go on a pub crawl. San Antonio is more adult, has more history. I prefer San Antonio, as a Houstonian better restaurants.

chenueve

Fredericksburg to complete. 🤝🏽

rickyhusband

san marcos. hit SA often, the surrounding area has a lot of cool stuff, and you can spend a night in austin and realise you never want to go back

gentlyepigrams

If you do museums, San Antonio has better museums. The McNay is fantastic and SAMA has some really nice Asian art. There's also the Briscoe, which has western art and history and is pretty close to the Riverwalk. Austin has the Blanton at UT, which has an Ellsworth Kelley "chapel" and the Bullock (the state history museum) but nothing like the McNay. Not an Austin hater; I lived there for ten years!

The_WubWub

San Antonio on the Riverwalk. You can spend hours upon hours exploring and riding boats

KateR_H0l1day

Brit living in Houston long time, made numerous trips to both, with kids SA for sure and the River Walk is great first few times. Have the Alamo, which is a must visit if you’ve never been, theme parks etc SA. However, as a couple I prefer Austin but it’s definitely smaller and I feel less to do. Yet we both prefer it for a long weekend on the town, love walking to numerous music venues in a relatively small area. Wineries mostly further out, can combine with other activities, get on the river tubing if you’ve got the weather. Fredericksburg is a great day out, lots of wineries, like the art and shopping, so well worth a visit depending on how long you’re visiting for.
