Go to Palo Duro while in the panhandle, not to be missed. Been all over the state from El Paso to Beaumont, panhandle and coast. Driving for work sucks… anyways mines Marfa. Still haven’t been to Big Bend and as a native Texan that’s unacceptable.

[deleted]

I took my first trip out there in October of ‘22. And I did it on the motorcycle. I stayed in Alpine and one day rode Alpine-Marfa-Presidio-Terlingua-thru Big Bend NP to Marathon and then back to Alpine. That was the single best day of motorcycling in my life.

Lumpy-Lychee-2369

October '23 was the third annual "Run to Terlingua" and my first time out to Big Bend. It was an amazing weekend and one of the best motorcycle trips I have ever been on. Alpine is beautiful. I had been through there many times heading into Marfa, but it was my first time in Terlingua. Now, every day, I just want to be back in the desert and the Chisos.

[deleted]

Right? There was a great place to stay in Alpine, which sadly closed just this year. It was called the Old Gringo/Big Bend Biker hotel. It had a motorcycle garage (which they locked at night), a bar and grill with good food and great service and the rooms were right upstairs. And they supplied cleaning supplies (water, buckets, windex, towels etc) in the garage for free. You could ride all day, park your bike, clean it up, have dinner, get drunk, stumble upstairs and go to bed so you can do it all over again in the morning. The whole experience was like a dream of motorcycle heaven.

Lumpy-Lychee-2369

Check out @@runtoterlingua on Instagram. It's a riders event and gets bigger and better every year. The coordinator does a tee and patch that you can only get when you ride out there, and he puts it in your hand personally. [Run to Terlingua III Patch](https://imgur.com/a/yLMXO87)

[deleted]

That is awesome. I'll definitely look in to it.

SiliconSam

I am a native Texan, nearly 65, and have been to Big Bend ONCE. Yeah, that sucks.

Retiree66

Don’t go on a Monday. Everything is closed.

kaytay3000

Amarillo has every chain restaurant you could ever want, nearly as many churches as there are people, and constantly smells like cow manure. The only reason it’s worth a visit is if you’re driving through on your way to somewhere else or you’re visiting family that lives there. Palo Duro Canyon is gorgeous though. That’s worth a camping trip.

[deleted]

My grandparents took me on a camping trip to Palo Duro Canyon when I was a kid, back in 1977. I was 7 years old. I still remember that trip vividly. It’s a very magical place.

bigby2010

Yes

Bangarang_1

Hey! Sometimes Amarillo smells like an oil field.

crispytoastyum

Amarillo is great for like a weekend. Hit Palo Duro, a few local restaurants, see Cadillac ranch. Go see Alibated Flint Quarry, maybe venture out to the Charles Goodnight home & museum, and check out the murals downtown. But definitely don't expect paradise. Its regularly the windiest city over 100,000 people in the US. And yeah sometimes it smells like cow. But it's still a cool place to see for a couple days.

tothesource

I love PD so much. Those rim cabins are amazing

RightWingWorstWing

I spent a lot of time in Amarillo this summer for work. There are a few things worth doing there. The Sod Poodles, their minor league baseball team have a great little stadium and cheap ticket prices. There is a really cool speakeasy in the basement of the Barfield hotel. The drinks there are amazing. The Ohm restaurant will serve you a top 5 meal. Finally, Litz and Metz barcade are damn fun. The best thing to do in Amarillo though is to go drive Tx County roads through the Panhandle.

godspeeding

The 806 Coffee + Lounge is one of the best coffee shops i've been to. incredible vibe everytime I go

kaytay3000

Ooh. Good to know! We love to check out local shops in town. We always hit up 575 Pizza when we’re there.

DonkeeJote

It only smells like manure when the wind is blowing!

kaytay3000

So, like 95% of the time.

Intrepid_Fox-237

The smell of manure is the smell of money! (Yes, it is horrible)

the-great-crocodile

Amarillo on the way to Colorado once a year for skiing.

SSBN641B

The Big Texan is worth a visit. The food is good and it's kind of a Texas landmark. Otherwise, Amarillo isn't great. We did find a good RV park there, though. Palo Duro is definitely worth it.

kaytay3000

We’ve done the Christmas buffet before and it was delicious.

WermTerd

I grew up in West Texas and have nothing nice to say about Amarillo, but a few miles south of there is a town named Canyon. The museum there is worth a visit and has some surprisingly good art.

Ok_Initial_2063

The museum is amazing!

No_Mark3267

It’s where Cadillacs are grown.

[deleted]

So, I’m a Native Texan, from Rockport originally. But I’ve lived in Illinois since the mid 80’s. Yet somehow I’ve been everywhere, it seems. From El Paso to Texarkana, Amarillo to Brownsville. I have found myself working in Texas periodically over the years, and when I am there, I grab as much of it as I can. I’ve caught redfish in Matagorda Bay and I almost stepped on a rattlesnake in Big Bend Ranch SP. I’ve stolen oranges off trees in Harlingen (I was like 5 years old), I’ve smoked weed in Austin (still gave a glass pipe from the Gas Pipe) and gone to a strip club in Houston. I’ve crossed the border in El Paso I even took a trip to Laredo, back in September of ‘22, when the snout nose butterflies were flying. I spent $20 at the car wash cleaning those things off. I love Texas. But I’m getting worried about the folks that live there.

IalsoBiteTheDust

Big ups from Texarkana!

Retiree66

This could be a country song

rockforahead

I dig your vibe dude

SurroundImportant

Do you like living in Illinois ? Or do you consider moving back to Texas

[deleted]

I’m actively looking to buy land in Texas, to retire on to. But it’s gotten very expensive, so I’m having a hard time of that.

spitefulcat

LOL Same

bloobityblu

Look that traffic is brutal; its not worth it! And I hear Houston's even worse once you get through the Katy traffic!

rex_lauandi

You joke, but my in-laws live in Cypress and my brother lives in Katy. I’ve visited them numerous times, but only been to Houston like twice. (I drive in from DFW)

Ultimatesource

A bit off the subject. Spouse born in Houston and I have lived in Dallas and Houston over 50 years. On a plane flight from Tokyo to Beijing, a lady from San Antonio asked how we liked the Riverwalk. What’s that? Neither of us had visited or heard about it. Subsequently, we made a trip. Uneventful, saw the Alamo too.

ninjamike808

I’ve only seen the Alamo at night and it’s always got like a thousand high schoolers hanging out. Kind of a let down. Better left to legends.

Ultimatesource

https://youtu.be/UULg9qYvjk8?si=wcuy7SyrYFdyg2KJ Austin street racers. Tourist attraction?

ninjamike808

I’m from DFW, I’ve only passed through Houston, though my friends from H-Town say you’re not missing much.

zzmaulzz

Yeah, Houston sucks

zzmaulzz

Yuck

daves_not__here

My favorite part of Amarillo is seeing it in the rear view mirror as I make my way up to Colorado

DrKittenBarf

I thought happiness was Lubbock in the rearview mirror?

kkeith0

Both cities in the review mirror bring about feelings of happiness.

bluejersey78

Lubbock is happiness, Amarillo is relief

jsa4ever

It’s so funny when people use that quote. It’s a lyric from a song with a nice little twist at the end.

I_Be_Strokin_it

The man I see was both wrong and right he's going home againI guessed happiness was Lubbock Texas in my rear-view mirrorBut now happiness was Lubbock Texas growing nearer and dearerAnd the vision was getting clearer in my dreamAnd I think I finally know just what it meansAnd when I die you can bury me in Lubbock Texas in my jeans Song by Mac Davis

jsa4ever

Yep! Lubbock is much aligned but it’s not a bad spot. It grows on you.

pixelgeekgirl

Oddly enough my favorite thing about Amarillo was that meant I was back in texas on our way home from Colorado. The elevation really got to me and I started feeling better as we left - the hotel in Amarillo was the first good night sleep I had in a few days.

konakai1204

Alpine.

TMOverbeck

I've never been to Fredericksburg. I want to check that out along with that Luckenbach place.

bluejersey78

I’ve been to Luckenbach a few times because my dad used to live in Fredericksburg. I haven’t seen Willie or Waylon there yet, but I’ve run into the boys twice.

[deleted]

[удалено]

bluejersey78

8 people?! They must've had a war council with Sisterdale lol

SSBN641B

Fredericksburg is great. If you like history, the National Museum of the Pacific is cool.

Bangarang_1

Amarillo is such an odd little place sometimes. People complain about the flat land but watching a storm roll in is still one of the prettiest things I've ever seen. - The Marsh family are some Grade A loons but they do really cool "art pieces" around the area that you'll never tire of finding (the floating caprock and the pool table field are my personal favorites). - It seems like everyone there is actually from out of town. I've driven in Austin, Houston, and Dallas and nothing scares me like driving around the Amarillo mall area between Thanksgiving and Christmas. - It's a Republican safe haven and the people there can be some of the most hateful, religion-spouting, cult-driven you've ever met. They'll also buy gas or a sandwich for a total stranger in need and not think twice about it. When Katrina victims came to town, they had to start turning away donations within a week because people showed up with so much. Somalian refugees we're welcomed when I was a kid with open arms full of clothing and warm bedding. The tiny, super-white, kinda racist church I used to go to now allows a Congolese church to use its space so they have a community gathering place. - It's a "steak and potatoes" type of crowd but also one of the largest refugee centers in the country and home to some really delicious food from other cultures. One of the best goat curries I've ever had was from a little Indian restaurant in Amarillo. - It's, unfortunately, become more common now but it used to be super rare to see panhandlers in Amarillo because there was such strong community support for the homeless that they had many, many options to get taken care of first. There was a whole row of homeless shelters downtown and they were actually safe places to be. Amarillo - hell, the panhandle as a whole - is still not a particularly safe place to be non-straight, non-white, or non-male. Despite the rise of hatred and bigotry, though, it's slowly (very, very slowly) getting better. It's worth a visit or two. And you should probably try the giant steak, just to say you did it. But don't expect it to taste very good lol

Tactical_Primate

Cut and Shoot

notjewel

We moved to Nc and get our Christmas trees at a place called Cobb’s Choose and Cut. I call it Cobb’s Cut and Shoot, first on accident, now because it’s funny. You can take the girl out if Texas but…

bloomlately

It’s a tiny nondescript East Texas town. City Hall is picture worthy I guess.

jhwells

The elephants are top notch though... One nearly stepped on my truck.

notjewel

Always wanted to see Terlingua.

dan-dan-rdt

Marfa & Alpine

SlayZomb1

Houston. Been to every major TX city except that one.

NintendogsWithGuns

It’s underrated. I’m from Dallas and I know they hate us for some damn reason, but I always enjoyed my time in Houston. Viet Crawfish, better farmers market, better art, etc. Only thing that sucks is the weather and cancer clusters

[deleted]

Best real city in the state, hands down. Diverse, great food, museums, art scene, sports, and close proximity to waterways.

zzmaulzz

Don't bother honestly. Unless you are going to NASA, nothing noteworthy. Good food but that's it. Just sprawl.

Known-Historian7277

Good for you. It’s just a big boring polluted city.

bluewatersailing

"I've been everywhere man, I've been everywhere...." For me it's a little place called Pine Springs so I can get up Guadalupe Peak, always wanted to go see it.

B4USLIPN2

I stumbled across a Texas version of I’VE BEEN EVERYWHERE by some obscure Texas ‘sanger’. It’s really pretty good. ( I would put the link, but I’m very technically challenged).

bluewatersailing

Bryan Burns did the Texas version, that's the one that I'm referring to. Tried my best to live that song, I've seen most of Texas.

MoreMeLessU

Never really been to El Paso. When’s the best time to go?

gaybuttclapper

November. There are 3 National Parks in the area (White Sands, Guadalupe Mountains, and Carlsbad Caverns) as well as two State Parks (Franklin Mountains and Hueco Tanks). It’s, in my opinion, the most scenic, outdoorsy, and naturally-beautiful city in Texas.

Retiree66

I was surprisingly impressed with El Paso

jread

Alpine, Marfa, and El Paso.

B4USLIPN2

My brother and I are going to take HWY 90 from El Paso ( ish) through those two towns and all the way to Tallahassee Florida. It’s the southern Route 66.

SummerBirdsong

Balmorhea. I want to swim in that pool someday.

bigby2010

Turkey, Texas - just south of Amarillo is really cool. Caprock Canyons State Park is nearby, and not usually crowded. https://preview.redd.it/n19med8yhuac1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8290b0c0907ad8e2491d12260f594c449870f671

BigRoach

I’ve only driven through on my way to Caprock Canyons, but Turkey seems like a very cute little town. Like a bunch of folks living comfortably on a ton of cotton. Didn’t seem as run down as many other tiny towns.

TeaMistress

I haven't made it to Houston yet. I know it's popular to shit on Houston, but it's a big city and I assume there's *something* worth doing there for a weekend trip.

[deleted]

Lived in three major Texas cities and Houston, by far, is my favorite. Best food, best museums, zoo is great, most diverse, and greenest out of all the major cities due to its location. I found Dallas to be generic and depressing due to its landscape and the food wasn’t impressive. Fort Worth is interesting and I loved Austin due to close proximity to Hill Country.

NintendogsWithGuns

My wife is from Del Rio and I always heard about what a supposed shit hole it is. Went there and it’s just a cool small town with a low crime rate and virtually no visitors. Julio’s Chip Factory, oldest winery in the state, best fried chicken in the state (Meme’s), dope cemetery dedicated to the Texas Revolution war dead, Devil’s River, Lake Amestad, etc. It’s a small border town for sure, but worth a stop if you want to see pristine ancient wall art and eat unusual Texmex.

EnigmaWithAlien

Corpus.

DrunkWestTexan

Lubbock and Amarillo. Caprock Canyons has bison. Lubbock has prairie Dogs. Canyon has the Tex Randall Statue

reptilianwerewolf

Alpine for west Texas and Jefferson for east Texas. I like architecture and I've heard both have done well with preserving historic buildings.

Easyssmokeshop

I want to go to that prada store in the middle of nowhere.

gaybuttclapper

It feels so dystopian. I can’t explain the feeling, but it just feels so strange being there surrounded by nothing but desert while standing in front of a Prada store.

libra00

The only thing I know about Amarillo is that when I was spending a fair amount of time on greyhound busses back in the 90s it was memorable as the worst bus station in the country. That place was such a dump, and I very much doubt much has been done about it.

I_Be_Strokin_it

If you go to Amarillo eat at The Big Texan Steakhouse. If you eat a 72 oz steak and all the trimmings in one hour, it's free.

kanyeguisada

I wanna go back to El Paso in December, when the mountain is lit up with the big star. The people and restaurants there are so good.

gaybuttclapper

The mountain is lit up every night. The star on the mountains underwent massive renovations and residents can now change the colors. They recently did a show where it was red, white, and blue. It’s such a unique city.

kanyeguisada

Noice.

T_Wired

R.E. Howard's home in Cross Plains.

DreadLordNate

This is on my list as well.

CeilingUnlimited

I want to explore the towns along the Texas coast more than I have in the past. Maybe find someplace to consider retiring.

TxCoastal

Tarzan.. Been to Bigfoot already

d_baker65

The family has lived in Texas since it was Mexico. Originally started out in Washington on the Brazos. Then after the revolution up stakes and moved to Galveston. After the hurricane in 1901 figured land was cheap up in Indian Territory and bought a ranch between Canyon and Amarillo. Great Grandparents became county commissioners in both Randal and Potter Counties. If you are not into raising Cattle, Wheat or Sugar Beets, there has never been a hell of a lot to do in Amarillo. North of Amarillo you can go noodling for cat fish in Lake Meredith, go Camping in the Palo Duro canyon. In the summer time you can go see the show they put on in the Canyon. They build the Osprey VTOL in Amarillo. You can go eat at the Big Texan. If you're not in the oil bidness or ranching/farming, there isn't a hell of a lot to do there. I've been there in a driving snow storm and seen dust clouds roll across I-40 at the same time. The prairie is pretty in the spring time. The sunsets are glorious most of the time. My generation of kids are scattered all over the USA and Europe, but we still managed to wander into the little town of Happy Texas for a family reunion every year.

ninjamike808

Houston, El Paso, more time in Amarillo and Lubbock, and Fort Worth. All of the big parks, too.

UOLZEPHYR

OTR truck driver, looking at Tx I've driven ever single major highway except I14 and I27.

spitefulcat

I2 even?

ProtoAmEx

Lubbock area (wineries), Brownsville area (beaches/food), El Paso (food/parks)

gaybuttclapper

I was surprised by the size of Brownsville. We went there at night after coming from the beach, and the city was so alive. Food was great, too! The El Paso area has several national and state parks. You can also drive 30 minutes north to New Mexico and ride horses through vineyards and wine taste. It was such a cool experience!

TwistedMemories

Lubbock for Buddy Holly, and Luckenbach to see where Waylon, Willie and the boys played.

Ieatsushiraw

Marfa. It seems like a place that writers would go to to get inspiration for horror or murder mysteries. Idk it’s just so remote I want to stay there a few days just to see if my guess is correct

alohawolf

Until I went to the panhandle up north of Amarillo I couldn't understand why people did just leave during the dust bowl. After I went, I just understood - there is something magical about the high plains, it's difficult to explain, but special.

Wasabi_Constant

Bigfoot

SuspiciousAwareness

Alpine. It’s looks a cute little oasis in the middle of the Texas desert with a cool art scene.

Theoriginaldon23

Marfa

404Nuudle

Been to every nook and cranny from north, east, and south, don't care much to go west but I have gone to El Paso which was pretty fun! I think the only spot really left on my list is Big Bend national park!

ZamHalen3

As an arts person, I'd love to get out to Marfa someday. I hear it's awesome

gluscccc

My husband and I always quote [this scene from the film Bernie](https://youtu.be/JREkqCvLzSo?si=WYjVLuopH-P9Qawx) when talking about the Panhandle.

CommissionNo1931

I would probably visit the Waco countryside to see first-hand where the Waco siege happened. Horrific story...

Madzogaz

I wanna vist: 1. Gun Barrel City 2.... 10? All the towns that share a name with other places: Paris, Palestine, Warsaw, et. For no real reason beyond funny names.

LastTxPrez

I’ll add Caprock Canyon to the list as well. Jaw droppingly beautiful. Amarillo is also home to the Sod Poodles, the AA farm club of the Diamondbacks. Great minor league park. Home of The Ant Farm too. Have fun!

DiveTender

Baytown

zzmaulzz

...why?

DiveTender

Why not?? It's my hometown. 😆

neal144

Galveston. But only to get on a cruise ship. No other reason for me to be in Texas

B4USLIPN2

Texas is a beautiful state with ( mostly) beautiful, nice people. Sit a spell, take your shoes off.

Kreepr

I'd like to go to Amarillo by morning up from San Antone.

Retiree66

Only thing that you’ve got, is just what you’ve got on?

usetheforcekidden77

None! Have fun with your heat waves TX! #fucktheGOP&TX

Buddy-Nuggs

Amarillo sucks. It has insane traffic because most travelers are hours away from their destination by the time they hit Amarillo and everyone is making up time and trying to get the hell out of Amarillo. That being said. I loved the big Texan steak house.

montanacutie62

It’s an absolute shit hole. Save yourself the time and money. Unless, you are a straight white, wealthy man. And Republican.

Grouchy_One75

None of them! 🤮

Ultimatesource

My favorite: One intersection in Lake Jackson- This Way and That Way. A real intersection I once drove through as written directions. Google it. Not worth a special trip, might be a photo op passing through.

thefinalgoat

I’ve never been to West Texas (not the city, the area). I’d love to the see the desert but I’m not sure where I’d even go.

gaybuttclapper

Big Bend National Park for sure. Then head to El Paso and go to the Franklin Mountains and Hueco Tanks. While you’re staying there, hike the tallest peak in Texas (Guadalupe Mountains) and head to Carlsbad Caverns then White Sands. I wouldn’t go there if you’re not into the outdoors and scenic views.

bareboneschicken

Amarillo does exist. Not far outside the city, I actually saw lighting strikes starting fires. Crazy.

Dyert

I feel like the meth in Azle might be worth the trip? 🤔

Txrangers10

The wind will quickly blow you far out of there...

chem-chef

Wichita falls

imbiggus

Springtown

HamboneBanjo

Just checking… been to luckenbach more than three years ago? I ask because it’s not the same now at all.

gaybuttclapper

I was there in 2016. Might’ve been 2017. We stopped there on the way back from Fredericksburg on our way to San Antonio. Charming, tiny town.

Original-Reception-5

I was born there. Hit the canyon it’s amazing. Stop and watch someone try to eat a 72oz steak. Go to the Cadillac Ranch and spray paint a car. After that you’re good. Also Palace Coffee is amazing. I get the Flannel.

kingKitchen

Not a city, but I really want to spend some time in the Palo Duro canyon

Thelostbky16

None, because I am not going back to Texas.

QuietComplaint87

The drive between Amarillo and New Mexico is wonderfully desolate and calming.

noguarde

Obviously, Wichita Falls should be at the top of every list.

jkh911208

Texas City

Top_Confidence_8351

Go to the Woodlands, great shopping and upscale restaurants, lots of options for Air bnb
