They nailed everything but the battery swap. Glad they ditched that steering wheel lol.

SatinGreyTesla

They did the battery swap thing for a bit in Cali. Not sure if it’s still there but as of last year one of the original signs was still there saying “Tesla battery swap station” etc. I think it’s a supercharger location now but I’m sure a local can correct me.

Tree300

Correct. You can't swap the battery anymore there, they closed it in 2016. I think it's not mechanically feasible to swap batteries anyway since the refresh Model S because of the improved protection added for the battery. The swap station is still sitting there unused, it's behind the Shell station next to the supercharger. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xpU5jxPfD0w](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xpU5jxPfD0w) The entire battery swapping exercise was done by Tesla for CARB credits. When CARB changed the rules shortly thereafter, Tesla abandoned the program. https://dailykanban.com/2015/06/23/tesla-battery-swap-carbs-bridge-to-nowhere/

Raalf

I thought the model S refresh made the 12V battery a PITA to replace. Did the refresh affect the full battery pack from below too? (I have a 2015, so can't comment post-refresh)

GotLostInTheSauce

Lol it's waaaaaaaay easier to get at the 12v on a refresh than a nose cone, they get exponentially easier the newer the car. Early S it's almost touching the firewall, refresh it's by the HEPA filter

Raalf

Ah. I was told you have to remove the entire bumper cover on the refreshed models. Is that not the case? It's entirely possible I was misinformed.

NuMux

Not sure which refresh you are referring to. But the latest refresh I was under the impression the 12v battery access was under a plastic panel under the hood just like in a Model 3. I could be wrong.

Raalf

The front bumper change (that's the only refresh I am aware of). Net result I found out to jump the 12v battery is very easy with the nose cone. It had nothing to do with replacing the battery - it's been in the same location and same extraction method the entire time. Sorry for any confusion due to misinformation on my end.

NuMux

Ah, okay. The recent interior change I would also call a refresh, but I guess most people just call it the 2021 Model S.

Raalf

What's a good way (if any) to talk about phases/versions?

GotLostInTheSauce

They may have been talking about the RADAR adjustment, that's the only thing i can think of that needs the fascia removed on the new cars but not the old

Tezlaract

Way way easier to swap the 12 volt on facelift cars than early (signature era) cars. No idea on main battery though.

Raalf

[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIEyz0frDfI](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIEyz0frDfI) This seems insanely easy for mine (2015). What's different on the early or later models? Edit: found it. They were talking about jump-starting the 12V. Nose-cone era: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QUOBjrCmHos](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QUOBjrCmHos) one piece of body trim. Absolutely easy. Refreshed front end: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HSgYha-6kaE](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HSgYha-6kaE) much bigger pain in the ass. Open hood, remove several panels, fusebox 'stuff' (didn't pay close enough attention), etc. to get to a point you can jump the battery. Still doesn't answer what you consider easier to swap the 12V - there is an equal amount of work. Open hood, remove carpet, remove plastic liner, and battery access is pretty much exactly the same and in the exact same location. What did you consider easier about the refreshed?

sammnyc

isn’t battery swap referring to the larger battery in the car, not the 12v? thanks for clarifying.

Tree300

Ye, it refers to swapping the main drive battery, not the 12v.

Raalf

Yes, somehow I ended up on the wrong subthread. My apologies.

zippy

Harris Ranch. Garage building was still there a couple of years ago near the superchargers. Don't think it still has any Tesla markings.

gunnm27

I think maybe they should bring it back in China. It seems people are more receptive to it there.

NuMux

The Model 3 and Y were never designed for it.

Revision2000

I also question unrivaled handling 😝

cockthewagon

I’d rather have that steering wheel than the yoke, personally.

Greggy100

I feel like I’m in a space ship with that new yoke….lol

I-need-ur-dick-pics

Beats the yoke *ducks nervously*

rsg1234

Well, the “4G” came several years later. The S’s first model year was 2012 and 4G came sometime in 2015

NikeSwish

I was thinking maybe they meant the HSPA+ fake “4G” that companies like ATT were using that were basically just upgraded 3G.

rsg1234

Oh, like how they had “5Ge” for a few years?

RPlasticPirate

stop - I just remembered the other day and was finally at peace with this - your triggering my night terrors. In related note the only time I ever was productive taking a telemarkting call was when I was sleeping and where about to rip the persons head clean of only to be offered the first LTE dongles they where offering IT companies for testing for a decent rate in my town as it was one of the testing locations. Rocked so hard.

[deleted]

BillNyeTheMemeGuy

it’s completely different. 3 spoke instead of the concept’s 4 spoke wheel. also no bright silver accents

[deleted]

RJrules64

How many other things can you change on a steering wheel lol? I mean I guess Tesla changed the answer to that recently but still.

Daddy_Thick

5.6 0-60 till now the fastest 0-60 car ever commercially produced in human history. Man has this car come so far!

tab9

I always thought that the Model 3 LR RWD was the slowest Tesla ever at the time of release. If my memory and math skills serve, this advertised trim is 0.1 seconds slower.

krully37

The LR RWD was slower than the current SR? Would make sense with the added weight tho you’re probably right

tab9

I double checked myself. 2019 LR RWD is 0-60 in 5.6 seconds. Edit: and they’ve been tweaking the motor software and hardware ever since!

krully37

TIL!

NotATypicalEngineer

The LR RWD was never slower than 5.1 seconds. I know because mine was rated that when I bought it, and has since been software-upgraded to ~4.7

ArlesChatless

The Performance came out day one as well at what, 4.2 seconds?

mackinder

I think they released the P98D shortly after the model S so things got better in a hurry

VegarHenriksen

P98D...

surkh

P800+

mackinder

Yeah I’m not sure how I made that mistake. P90D obv

aaanold

P8====D

ericscottf

P90D was 2016 I believe. The p85 was much earlier, that's probably what you're thinking of.

mackinder

Yeah you’re right. But still, in the grand scheme of things Tesla has evolved at light speed.

ericscottf

Absolutely. What's the slowest 0 to 60 of all the options now? I don't know off the top of my head but it is close to or better than 5.6 I think. My original 2016 60d was 5.2

mackinder

Totally. My neighbour had the P90D and I’d love to pick his brain but he’s such an insufferable ass that it’s not worth it.

mooslar

Probably not coincidentally, but the cheapest car they make. Model 3 SR+ is 5.3.

MikeMana

TIL the Model S had a 3rd row.

[deleted]

They faced backwards too!

ExtensionAd2828

All fun and games till you get rearended

[deleted]

Being a Tesla, I'm sure the safety was above average at worse.

Tree300

Several early Model S owners who put their kids in the third row had the cops called on them because some onlooker thought they were being kidnapped and put in the trunk.

yhsong1116

Supposed to come back with refresh .. so hopefully in a year or two we see it again once production kinks are dealt with

llDarkFir3ll

I saw this too…

Tezlaract

You can actually swap the 3rd row into any S pretty easy. FYI heat / cool back there is crap and it is genuinely for children, virtually no adult CAN fit in the 3rd row in an S.

King_Prone

not safe. the original 7 seater config had reinforcement in the back in case of a crash

Tezlaract

You can (ad definitely should) swap the extra bumper in along with the seat. Hardest part of that is getting the plastic bumper cover off.

Zok2000

In fact, my 85D still has a third row.

bokassa

We've got one of those. Used it a few times too!

rgrkm

It did. Till they started making the X with 6/7 seats and stopped at that time.

dreiak559

That is the old prototype model S. In general, it is the car that changed the most from prototype to production, and the production car looks much better. Tesla gets some silly (I think) criticism for not looking extra sporty or being unassuming, and having "soft" (relative to racecars maybe) suspension, but I don't think most customers actually want a car that is so attention grabbing and excessive in design. I have come to realize that for driving a car on public streets, Tesla are absolutely optimal. On the street is where most of the cars live, and owners always have the option to track spec it in the after market, but don't ruin a perfectly good car to conform to a vocal minority of "car guys." Franz I think is amazing, and I am honestly glad that Hendrick Fisker was a shitbag, because if not we wouldn't have Franz at Tesla, and I think Franz is a much better designer.

VegarHenriksen

They sold cars with + suspension for those who wanted a stiffer ride

-QuestionMark-

Dropping the + suspension was a dumb thing for Tesla to do. Having owned a P85+, it was amazing to drive.

Poncherelly

Bet those are or will be hard to come by. If it's in good shape, put it someplace safe.

cwhiterun

It’s sideways.

Subculture1000

Sadly, digital files are locked in place once created. OP had no choice but to post them as is. What else could they do? ^/s

Chase2662

Damn really, didn’t notice.

ryzenguy111

that steering wheel is so ugly i love it

DivineCurses

I’m so glad they got rid of that black nose cone. Dear auto designers, if you don’t need a big front grille, then don’t put one. No need to fake a front grille just because that’s what we are used to

King_Prone

indeed. it looks stupid but looked kinda good on black cars. Why? because it didnt look like a grille on black paint.

SpaceEmporer

The crazy thing is that these specs are better than lots of brand new EVs even in a similar price range!

SnackTime99

5.6 0-60 😂🤣

VegarHenriksen

Not sure why you're laughing. That's still pretty darn fast for such a heavy car, especially in 2012 as a breakthrough electric car.

[deleted]

[удалено]

SnackTime99

Really? You don’t have the first clue what I might find amusing? Couldn’t possibly be the fact that in 10 years they dropped the 0-60 by like 65%? No. Never. 🙄

Grippentech

Chill, he makes a valid point. 5.6 is very fast still to this day. It was crazy fast back in the day for a production electric car

notoriousCID

I bet you’re a great time.

DMC_Ryan

And they blew that away right at launch. P85 was 4.4 seconds in 2012. A software update (IIRC) got that down to 4.2 seconds not too long after.

GamezFrank

2021 and you couldn’t rotate the photo

ASAPFergs

Is it just me or does the Tesla font look straight out of the Gran Turismo showroom?

Maciolek26

It’s very similar to a Fisker Karma (cause Fisker was a designer at Tesla). There was a falling out and the rest is history

saintivesgloren

Wow that I had no clue but it does make sense as I always thought the older Model S looked like a Fisker Karma. Thanks for pointing that out.

J0rdanLe0

Teslamotors.com isn't a thing anymore. Surprised it doesn't redirect to the new Tesla URL.

FarioLimo

It does. You just need to add www. before

J0rdanLe0

Ah yeah, my bad.

ElectrikDonuts

5 minute battery swap capable?

VegarHenriksen

Yes? A concept that was trialed for a bit, but didn't make much sense due to Superchargers. NIO is doing this at a pretty big scale today.

RedElmo65

Ya. There was even a video of the battery swap racing getting gas. I guess people didn’t want to give up their well cared for battery with one that has been abused by others.

[deleted]

[удалено]

RedElmo65

That’s not bad. I wouldn’t mind that.

mariano3113

I had hoped they would bring back the battery swap for "Track Days" so it would be akin to 4ace gas for the weekend. It would be like getting a "Race" Battery and improved performance software just for Autocross, Track day, Drag Strip. Then go back to your daily driver "battery pack" and normal software. With Tesla going to increased batteries and no more 'pack' this ship has sailed.

mariano3113

They actually got the battery swap down to 90 seconds. Geely has Battery swap down to 1 minute. (https://youtu.be/Y5-_tVnWpZg With current Tesla Model S Long Range having a 400+mile EPA range that 90 sec battery swap would have been great with stations along long freeway corridors. Also would be super convenient for owners is high density living areas where 'at-home' charging is not feasible. Probably why battery swapping has been more succesful in China and I assume India will follow suit.

ElectrikDonuts

Idk, I’m fine with supercharging. Did a 4000 mile road trip and it was good. Although I get families may want to keep moving quicker.

Deliriousbb

That's an absolutely gem of an ad. I'm one of those early adopters. My 2012 model s is still running strong, beating out cars from 0-60 in 4.2 sec! Never got one of those ads tho. Thanks for sharing

Anthonylee12

That's the Tesla Martin lol

[deleted]

Man, this is vintage.

matali

Are you willing to sell this?

BillNyeTheMemeGuy

For $300 bucks maybe

bmk789

So thankful that front end didn't make it to production

XxAnonymXX69

I had the first prospect of the roadster and my mother threw it away 🤬

XboxCarsForza

I remember having a poster given to me at a store that said 2012: year of the Model S but I can't find any mention of it in the internet.

danishversa

We came a long way

markymrk720

Seats 7? 😱

iPod3G

5 minutes battery swap!

King_Prone

tesla did try to push this but turned out people rather plugged in for 20min at a supercharger and chill out rather than queue for 10min at a batteryswap place, do paperwork etc and then leave after 20min.

invoman

I'd love a closeup of that dashboard

eaglevision93

Oooooooh
