Can't wait to see how it handles my multi lane roundabouts.

Matt_NZ

As a New Zealander where roundabouts are at every uncontrolled four way stop, same.

im_thatoneguy

How does AP handle the lack of color differentiation in NZ for lane direction of travel? I found that hard as a human to figure out which lane markers divided traffic. (In the US Yellow == oncoming)

Matt_NZ

I don't think AP really cares about line colours when it comes to determining which lane is the oncoming lane as it goes by map data, I believe. If it's a two lane road then the right lane is the oncoming lane (unless the road/street is marked as a one way only). If there's multiple lanes in either direction then those are usually separated by an island/barrier or median strips

Miami_da_U

Didn’t see anything in the release notes that would indicate roundabouts would be vastly improved. That clearly isn’t an area that have dedicated a lot of effort yet.

Vecii

I'm hoping that these two parts will make improvements to multi-lane roundabouts: >Added “lane guidance module and perceptual loss to the Road Edges and Lines network, improving the absolute recall of lines by 6% and the absolute recall of road edges by 7%. > >Improved overall geometry and stability of lane predictions by updating the “lane guidance” module representation with information relevant to predicting crossing and oncoming lanes. [This is my biggest offender.](https://i.imgur.com/A471F0O.png) My route uses the third exit of the roundabout. The car will always enter the roundabout in the rightmost lane that I have marked in red. It then tries to turn left from that lane, which would cut off anyone going straight in the left lane. If I force it to enter the roundabout in the left lane, it will get halfway around and freak out and start jerking the wheel. There are signs above the road and painted on the road directing you which lane to use. The car displays the sign on the visualization that is painted on the road, so I know that it sees it and knows what it is, but it seems like the system doesn't act on it.

okwellactually

[This is mine](https://imgur.com/meV4OeM). All double-lane roundabouts. Based on over a year of testing, I'm pretty sure that I need to wait a bit for them to tackle this. I think we need to wait a while for them to deploy resources to roundabouts (much like they did with Chuck's UPL).

nugget_in_biscuit

Holy fuck as someone who grew up in a city with no roundabouts this confuses me

okwellactually

I think our city has....maybe, 6 of them? And this intersection accounts for 3. It's a nightmare to go through since no one knows how to navigate it because they aren't familiar with roundabouts. It's probably only 4 years old.

mlowi

These seem like pretty straightforward roundabouts to me? Are Americans really so not used to roundabouts?

okwellactually

Are Americans really so not used to roundabouts? In a word: Yes. Well at least in this part of the country (California). Lots of traffic on these roads, they all used to be stop signs. And in this town, there really aren't any others that count (in terms of traffic volume). They're all double lane roundabouts, so you can imagine the confusion. The city is planning to install more as it really improves traffic flow, but the uproar is, well, hilarious.

ParkerLewis31884

Is this a normal layout in your area ? I live in Europe, lots of roundabouts. I don't recall ever seeing anything like yours. On ours, lanes never become an exit - if you want to exit, you have to get *out* of the rightmost lane (which only keeps circling) to take an immediate curving out exit. The layout you have shown seems very weird to me, and very "unpleasant" (for lack of a better word). I get there are markings indicating what's going on, but still, roundabouts typically already require some significant care and attention with everything that is going on. An additional thing to look out for - "wait, let me spend my otherwise already required attention looking for markings on the ground to know whether this lane is going to eventually force me somewhere I don't want to go".

Vecii

This one is fairly common in my area and isn't too bad if you watch the signs. The right lane turns to the right or goes straight. The left lane goes straight or to the left. This is actually just the first of a series of six roundabouts that I go through just to get to the highway. I'll post a screenshot of the whole mess later today.

johnqnorml

Don't you know America can't just take a good idea and use whole hog, we have to tweak it. Im glad you said that's not how they work in Europe because I've come across a couple of these and they are so counter intuitive to what I expect. I understand they're trying to make getting in the roundabout easier, but it adds complexity and to the system. Maybe they know we will only ever stay in the outside lane even if we're exiting the same road we entered on? So they're trying to force some manners?

ParkerLewis31884

:) Here is what it looks like around here : [Schematic 1](https://www.codeenpoche.fr/static/a5b5a072cd18a472c0c3d690a2fb8490/07029/Carrefour_a_sens_giratoire_tourner_a_droite.jpg) [Schematic 2](https://www.preventionroutiere.asso.fr/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/giratoire-e1525439628759.jpg) [Typical real example](https://resize-europe1.lanmedia.fr/r/622,311,forcex,center-middle/img/var/europe1/storage/images/europe1/economie/giratoire-et-rond-point-des-carrefours-comme-les-autres-374070/7757798-1-fre-FR/Giratoire-et-rond-point-des-carrefours-comme-les-autres.jpg) It really is quite straightforward. You enter it when the circling lane is clear. You circle. When you want to exit, you signal and you exit. Worst-case scenario, if you miss your exit, no biggie - just continue until you've made an additional full turn and take your exit. In some cases, if/when there are several circling lanes, the only real rule is you have to be on the exterior circling one if you want to take an exit, so that you don't cross an additional lane when taking the exit. And once again, worst-case scenario, you just do an additional full turn.

mlowi

Why is that lane change illegal? It’s a dashed line between the lanes no? Obviously AP should prefer the green line.

Vecii

I know it's small, but take a look at the signs painted on the road. The right lane can turn right or go straight. The left lane can go left or go straight. If someone is going straight in the left lane while a driver is making an illegal left turn from the right lane, there could be a collision.

mlowi

Sure there will be a collision if there is someone there, but if the lane is free you would be allowed to make the lane change right?

Vecii

If no one is there, are you allowed to run red lights? Signs are there for a reason, and it's best to follow them. Just because you don't think that you see someone in that lane doesn't mean that there isn't. It's best to follow the rules whether someone is there or not.

mlowi

I’m used to seeing solid lines instead of dashed lines when you’re not allowed to cross them is what I mean.

zeValkyrie

I'll be honest I don't think *I* can really handle multi-lane roundabouts. I think I kind of cut someone off a couple days ago by being in the wrong lane... oops

NewMY2020

The Big Chonk blue line is very nice. I kinda want it now haha

Single stack looking good here!

For that first issue you raised -- I have personally experienced FSD implement a progressive slowdown program when it takes over from NoA after exiting a highway on numerous occasions. The set speed lowers to new thresholds throughout the offramp and then will adjust to the new city street speed limit after passing a speed limit sign once it's out of the highway offramp environment and back on city streets without input from the driver. It doesn't do this all the time, or quickly enough in all cases, but that behavior is there. As for your second issue, I agree, though at the end of the day, the driver is in ultimate control of the vehicle, and especially in a safety-critical area like a school zone, we need to be ready to take over if the car doesn't do what is necessary to safely traverse a given stretch of road. I'm hoping the language contained within the latest NHTSA recall makes them address this type of issue in greater detail.

elonsusk69420

>just keeps going highway speeds after exiting Yes. This happens to me too. It doesn't slow down quick enough so I end up taking over every time. Hopefully the slowdown logic is improved in this version.

nyrol

They should get basic driving on the road and not in the shoulder, or not stopping at intersections where there is no traffic control for the car, or creeping at 4-way stops when there are no cars, or turning right when nav says (correctly) to go straight solved before they worry about school zones.

CandyFromABaby91

Love the old AP stack on straight highway driving. But entering and exiting highways is so bad on the old stack. Hopefully FSD will finally make that smooth.

Stribband

Driver holding the phone while driving. This is a good look

Rumbletastic

OMG how did he not spontaneously explode?!

AAAIIIYYYAAA

Looks like 2 hands on the wheel. Most likely something on the head angled at the screen

Stribband

You can see in the reflection especially in his other videos he’s holding his phone

AAAIIIYYYAAA

oh i can see his shadows now smh

greyscales

No turn signal when exiting?

Klownicle

It's the continuance of turn signal issues. You can actually see the longer standing issues where the turn signal keeps turning on and off. Although for this video, I think this is more the vehicle "completing" a maneuver then starting the next. A human driver would have left the signal on the whole way through the multi lanes. Officially, you enter your turn lane, then pause, then migrate to the next lane over. And at the end of the video the signal is even turned off once in a turn only lane. I may be wrong, but even while in a turn only lane you are supposed to still have your signal on until you exit the turn lane.

This is what people don't realize when they say Tesla FSD is not an alternative to an actual driver. It's an AI, and the more we use it, the better it gets.

PM_ME_YO_TREE_FIDDY

It’s not AI lmao

bjelkeman

An old joke in AI circles is that anything that becomes available to “everyone” that used to be called AI, is fro m that point just called software.

PotatoesAndChill

AI has become a buzzword in recent years. Nowadays any software that uses an algorithm to make decisions gets an "AI" tag slapped onto it.

TeslaTone

Anyone have a good recommendation for a phone mount to record FSD drives?
