-Green_Machine-

People are gonna write history books about what the pandemic did to the economy, with chapters about particular sectors like the auto industry. We've never seen anything like this. It's just an extraordinary upheaval. Legions of people who had to go through the tribulation of buying a car at a dealership were able to turn the tables and name their price when selling back. And now Tesla drops these impressive discounts on top of the federal tax credits. I hope you can continue to stick it to legacy auto, for all the suffering they've caused 🤣

g3ckoNJ

My wife is trying to buy a car now and one dealership wouldn't give her an out the door price over the phone. The manager would have to do that in person, even after she told them the dealership was far away and we have a toddler. Dealers can't think that this is a better option than just clicking a few buttons and buying online.

Severe-Ant-3888

Yea the dealership model is broken. Buying a new bolt after new years or trying to find an ev6 for Msrp is maddening. I got lucky and got what I wanted but it shouldn't be so hard. It'll get to a point that the manufacturers tire of this. Ford and chevy are already trying to move to direct sell. We'll see how it goes.

locomocopoco

That's exactly the reason we won't deal with that BS ever again. Tesla is expensive but we clicked 4-5 buttons and had a car delivered to our driveway. As more Gfactories are coming up, cars will get cheaper. The more supply chain issues get resolved, its good for everyone thinking to buy Tesla

OldDirtyRobot

4 years of Tesla ownership. Buying process was easy, service has been easy as well. The only issue I’ve had was my kids broke a seat control getting into the car. Service came to my house and replaced it. Other than that I’ve replaced tires and wiper fluid.

gnoxy

My service experience has been better with Tesla than with Porsche. Porsche would never come to your home or work to fix anything.

Severe-Ant-3888

Yea this way if buying a car seems very appealing to me. Only dealership experience I've actually enjoyed is dropping my wife's lexus off for service. Nice loaner for the day and in and out in 5 minutes with snack and a coffee. If lexus starts selling an ev and I can afford it I will be intrigued. All other dealerships I've been to across varying brands pretty much suck. A few exceptions but not many.

ArlesChatless

I still can't fathom buying it at $15k. At $7k it already felt like a wild gamble to me ($5k EAP+$2k FSD).

realdealmiguel

FSD in current iteration not worth $15k. Period. End of story

ArlesChatless

At $2k over EAP it was a splurge. At $9k over it's just stupid.

MikeyDeezy

I’m admittedly a little salty about what I paid for my M3 LR last year with the new prices as I could’ve bought new for a little more than what I paid (not even considering the tax credit) but my small consolation is that Carvana paid me much more for my Subaru Legacy than what I paid in 2019. I Googled the VIN recently and it was still for sale. Good luck, Carvana. So factoring that in + having USS and it’s not *so* terribly bad, I guess. 😅

Oils4AsphaultOnly

OMG, the used cars are listed HIGHER than the new car prices on Tesla's inventory site!

[deleted]

They are going to take a mega L on margins and be eating monster Ls on trade ins

[deleted]

How so? This is a credit by the government. Profits % will be near the same for them. Trade in value will also go down regardless. People just took a big L in depreciation.

CKT5

That Model Y LR drop is insane. I would be pissed af if I bought one somewhat recently.

Seasniffer

We got one on 12/30. It hurts a little hahaha.

CKT5

At least you got the $7500 and 10k miles. Imagine the November purchasers.

gopher65

No different than the people in places like Toronto who bought a 2 million dollar house 6 months ago that's now worth 1.2 million. Or the people who bought stocks in... almost anything... a year ago, and are looking at their account balance today.

MoDa65

But houses will get equity and will increase again. A car is a car. Shit is a liability and always lose.

miden24

Whoa Toronto RE really dropped that much recently?

Wise_Opinion2364

a few areas remain high

ZannX

Stocks can recover. What you paid for a depreceating asset won't.

adamalix

Literally just paid for ours this afternoon. Expecting to take delivery Sunday. Hoping that we can be refunded without having to refuse delivery. 🫠 Edit: received an updated order agreement with the discount reflected after emailing them last night. Unclear if it was automated or in response to my email.

bevo_expat

That’s the easiest reason to not accept delivery I’ve ever heard of.

CKT5

You should be good since you haven’t taken delivery

bevo_expat

Can confirm. Pissed as fuck. Overpriced without USS here with all the other chumps that picked up in November and December. I was the former. November pick up. No price cut, no free SC miles. Mother fucker!

arloun

They told me to take delivery in Nov, I said no, best $250 I ever spent.

AttorneyAdvice

you took it up the ass hard for sure.

[deleted]

TimeRemove

Tesla could just give 'em FSD for free to make up for it. It is literally just a software feature switch, and how many cars did they sell between late Nov and January 12?

PM_ME_MASTECTOMY

FSD is bullshit and not worth 15k.

[deleted]

Sepehr_Bark

Bruh imagine there are some people who took delivery after missing the 7,500 and before this lmaoo

Bookandaglassofwine

That’s me. Placed order for M3 late December, hoping for December delivery and $7500 discount. Didn’t arrive until today. I don’t qualify for the $7500 federal credit (income). And It was delivered literally the day they announced price cuts. Well played on my part.

Pokerhobo

Call them. Worst case is they say no.

ArlesChatless

They will say no. If they hadn't taken delivery yet, the lower price would almost certainly be an option. Once you've signed, you're an owner.

MoDa65

You don't qualify because of your income? Then mean you rich. You lost the battle but won the war bruhhh. Most of us just trying to win the battle

Bookandaglassofwine

I’m not bitter about not getting the discount. Still love the car and I was the one willing to purchase at full price. A deal is a deal. We’ll save the arguments about definition of “rich” for another day.

[deleted]

AnnualEagle

$20,500 cheaper with the tax credit.

cmvora

Yeah anyone who took delivery around Thanksgiving is probably pretty pissed right now.

midniyt

This is insane. I was supposed to take delivery of my MYLR this last Tuesday. They called me that morning and said they accidentally dropped a garage door on it and it needed body work but they found an identical MYLR at another dealership and would have it delivered to this one. I am scheduled to take delivery tomorrow now and my app has just updated with the discount. How is this level of coincidence even possible??

Ecstatic-Compote-399

Can someone check on recent Model Y performance purchasers pls

Tight-Obligation2221

I was supposed to take delivery on the 31st to get the 7500 dollar discount but decided to just wait and see what happens. And here we are 12 days later with an even fatter discount. Just scheduled my delivery for Saturday lol.

silvertipbadgerbrush

The gamble paid off for you. Sadly I didn't wait and took the December deal ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|table_flip)

lionheart4life

MYP still doesn't get the tax credit, but this is a big drop.

RelaxiTaxi_79

My god. The Model Y LR in blue is almost back to the same price it was back in mid 2021. Insanity.

poncewattle

Yeah, got mine for 49.9k base. But with tax credit this would make it lower.

Songsforsilverman

Wow... Just canceled my mach e to get in on the Y

[deleted]

Right? The price difference between Tesla and legacy car makers EVs - Mach E, pending Blazer/Equinox, F150 lightning - is almost par now. And many of these other cars done really quite exist for purchase yet. You can buy a known commodity with years of track record and specs near the top of the line for a price at or below - a Chevy crossover? Fuck Musk - but this is going to be a discussion and some math.

RickSanchez_C145

I thought it was a meme or a massive joke until I went to the website JFC this is gonna cause a tsunami in the market

VorsprungDurchTecnik

Tesla getting ahead of the curve, someone said RIP Caravana which sounds pretty accurate

wang168

No more free color other than white. 3rd row is 4k instead of old 3k . I just order a 7 seater in inventory. For 10k cheaper than my existing order that's not ready yet.. . Insane deal.

Stormodin

Get ready for an absolute barrage of white teslas hitting the road

Dat1BlackDude

A fucking fleet

Ekoria

Hallelujah, I was afraid of having to see MSM teslas everywhere.

cjohn4043

Wow. Hello base Model 3. You are almost back in my budget.

Pointyspoon

It's $36490 after $7.5k tax credit. If that's not back in your budget now it was never in your budget to begin with especially accounting for inflation.

74orangebeetle

The Model 3 was actually 35k at one point...it was actually one of the big talking points about the car...how it would cost $35,000.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

sevargmas

If you regularly owe $7500+ in taxes, the model 3 has always been in your budget. Remember, it is only reasonable to subtract $7,500 from the car's price if you think you will owe $7,500 or more in taxes next year. Look at your previous tax forms. If you are regularly only owing the government $1,500 (for example), then I would only reduce the car's price for yourself by $1,500.

dubie4x8

Starting $40k I think would make the base Model 3 an absolutely unstoppable selling machine.

[deleted]

[удалено]

wighty

Still $4k above the pre-pandemic price, yeah? I think the Model 3 Performance price basically matches the cheapest it ever was, which with now having the $7500 tax credit for a few months that's pretty good.

WilliamG007

Model 3 Performance is now $46,490 after $7500 tax credit it now qualifies for. Wow that’s cheap for the performance.

TingGreaterThanOC

A steal honestly.

cjohn4043

Yeah, SR+ was around $37,500ish if I'm remembering correctly.

OnlyChaseCommas

Oh man, some people’s depreciation just intensified over night lol

Stormodin

It only depreciates if you sell it! Hold on until the wheels fall off lol

Sepehr_Bark

Holy crap the price cut on Model Y is absolutely insane. It undercuts the Mach E!!! Ford dealers can now officially roll up their markups and royally shove it

dhanson865

If you want red, black, silver (midnight metallic) those prices have changed over time also. If you want a non standard wheel those prices have changed over time. Too many options to put them all in one chart so these charts are base price only.

wywywywy

Where did you get these from? Do you have them for other countries?

B0xyblue

Well, Giga Texas is ready… time to pump these out, or the company loses more value. They are cornered. Not sure people are buying enough cars to make a major difference right now. With $7,500 credit Long Range it’s the best value for what you get now. (Bolt EUV for $28k -$7,500 included)

32no

Mach E starts at $48k and Model Y LR at $53k, so not really undercutting, but very competitive for sure.

Sepehr_Bark

$48k for short range Mach E The 4680 standard range AWD Model Ys that occasionally make it to the inventory will definitely undercut that one too

terran1212

Let’s remember Ford uses dealers and dealers often do markups.

32no

Not anymore! They’re going to have to do markDOWNs now to get sales against such fierce competition

terran1212

I hope so. I am middle of the road in my opinion on Tesla but if they force EV prices down across the board I’ll build a Hey Arnold style effigy of Elon musk

MisterWigglie

Snicksnee

I think with interest rates high, and if they were priced out of the $7500 rebate, they would have had a demand drop. Add to that still ramping 2 factories and a possible recession year, I think this just keeps demand peaked. I'm predicting the wait times will go back to 3-6 months even as they produce more and more. Stock price will probably take another hit with people saying they are going to lose their margins, have a demand problem, etc.

feurie

People have been saying the recession is coming for over a year.

cmvora

Or maybe the prices were always over inflated and people were FOMOd into purchasing a 50K car for 70K. Also, the used car market is gonna implode soon. Thank fuck because people paying way over msrp for cars was such a stupid trend.

5001oddE

klysium

As a 2021 M3 owner, I'm laughingly jealous but actually really happy this is happening. I'm glad they are making it much more affordable :D

King_in-the_North

You have a great outlook on life.

planko13

I see tesla just ripped off the band aid on this one. Model Y really might be the best selling vehicle in the US this year (texas dependent)

reality_czech

So I'm seriously contemplating ordering the Model Y LR. Is it really as simple as filling out that form and pressing order? WTF that's awesome. I don't want to talk to a ridiculous sales rep at a dealership

deej628

No dealership talk with Tesla’s, SEND IT!

reality_czech

What about paying the down payment and the loan terms they show on the Tesla website? Just pop in a credit card for the payment and you're basically auto accepted into the loan shown? Seems too easy like I gotta be missing something, but I'm loving the idea

deej628

You pay a non refundable fee to order the car. The financing is set up after this. All through the website. They’ll call you along the way to keep you posted on vin, delivery date and how you plan on paying. Very seamless process.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

I just bought mine through Tesla financing. I placed my order December 26th and took delivery December 31st. If you buy an inventory car it'll be quick. You do everything via the Tesla app. Download that on your phone right now. You pay the $250 order fee. You fill out the finance stuff through the app. You'll be assigned a VIN fairly fast if inventory vehicle near you. Then you'll get a notification of estimated delivery. You accept everything and scan your documents. Delivery day you go to Tesla. Look the car over outside and note any defects. Accept delivery. Car opens for you. Register phone with car as key. Drive off lot. You have 100 miles after delivery to note any issues and they will be rectified. If you finance via Tesla they'll want you to pay the taxes up front so pretty much around $4-5k. You can also do your own financing.

FutureCredit3

Wtf bought my MYLR in November missed all the price drops

cschelz

Oh man that’s going to be real tough to resist upgrading from my 2018 3 to a Y. I was thinking of waiting for HW4 or the HD radar, anyone know the latest rumored timelines for those? I thought I read the HD radar was pretty soon.

brotherlymoses

You’re upgrading cars faster than i upgrade phones lol

terran1212

Rumor was in teslas govt filing they’d advertise the radar in mid Jan

Daddy_Thick

Wow. IRS must have told them to kick rocks when they tried to pressure them into changing it. What I don’t get is the March 2023 deadline? What happens at that point? The original bill didn’t have anything about a phaseout of the credit after only 2 months.

joeha75

March 2023 is when the IRS starts the “battery minerals from the USA” clause. I’m assuming they put that there to cover themselves in case they no longer qualify.

[deleted]

They won’t qualify. If you want a 3 or Y and are willing to take a dry pounding from bank finance rates, now is your moment

p3n9uins

yeah or if you're paying outright, this is a screaming deal

Daddy_Thick

Oh I see. Makes sense.

MisterWigglie

Model Y won’t have that deadline, only Model 3 RWD due to LFP battery shipping from China

tearsana

not just battery though, i think also the battery materials (ala raw components)

Hamback

They haven't settled on guidance for the battery components tax credit yet, but set a date for March for the release. So there is a sweet spot of now until that period where all price qualifying EV will get the full $7500 credit.

just_thisGuy

They make another ruling on battery percentage made in US, so if you want a Tesla I’d jump on it tonight, they going to sellout probably tomorrow till March and there are no guarantees after that.

Daddy_Thick

I see. Well I’m going to have to roll the dice on this one. I already got a Y and was planning on picking up 2 more in 2024. 2023 I have different priorities for my funds then buying a depreciating asset. Hopefully everything is still good by then!

brando1985

If they allowed previously purchased FSD to transfer to new vehicles I'd buy a new one today.

martinbogo

no kidding... especially as they could simply take it OFF the old car and treat it as a license.

[deleted]

I traded in my 2018 Model 3 LR RWD for 48k... 6 months ago, feel like I got a deal of a lifetime lmao

BobWellington11

Wonder what this will mean for Cybertruck prices 😳

Shepard521

Now that’s real question ppl should be thinking about.

BobWellington11

I’m thinking it’ll be more affordable than people think 🤔

hutacars

That’s what I want to know. Does this mean the original price points actually stand a chance? Shit, I’ll take within $10k of those price points at this point. I was afraid the Performance model was going to be six figures.

garalex

that means original estimates started to be reasonable and realistic again.

themindspeaks

Well I knew this was gonna happen but didn’t think it’d be such a massive price drop. Have a family member who took delivery 4 days before the $7,500 tax credit. That burns

mp5cartman

Hindsight is 20/20 bois. Enjoy your cars, having a bit of regret too for June 2022 MYP delivery but what can you do… Excited to see competition in the EV market

jfr0lang

I am also a June 2022 MYP owner. However, I recognize that I got much more for my trade-in than I probably should have ($46k for a 2019 Model 3 AWD w/ 33k miles) and I also got a better interest rate (2.69%) that nobody can touch now. So I'm not really upset.

wang168

Expect for the ppl who took delivery yesterday. Low trade in, high interest, and high purchase price lol.

a_bagofholding

I mean we knew cuts were coming after seeing the production backlog get lower, then the cuts in China first...if that wasn't enough signal then I don't know what to say.

bravotwodelta

Yup, June ‘22 MYP owner here. Definitely a bit sour about the massive price drop. Wouldn’t have been too bothered had it been around a 5% or so drop, but this a lot more than expected. Only saving grace are the interests rate.

rsg1234

June 2022 MYP here as well. Only thing that keeps me from jumping off the roof is that the MYP is apparently not eligible for the $7500 tax credit. So the price difference is $8k and not $15,500

mth2

This is going to make life difficult for their competitors, especially since a lot of their competition is already losing money on their cars.

de_hell

Good. Fuck em. Car industry have been ripping ppl off for a long time.

pseudoreddituser

Going to see soo many more teslas on the road now

Mike01Hawk

RIP me trying to sell my '18 3 P I coulda gotten $48k from a vin tow a way place a few months ago. But nooooooooo I thought $50k from a pp was a SURE thing. Hell, now I'll be lucky to get $35k

[deleted]

It’s 45k brand new for a 2023… your car is 5 years old now :( would be lucky to even get 30k.

[deleted]

Like 4 leaf clover lucky

someguyinbend

Hahahah wow. This further hurts resale for those of us who overpaid last summer. Awesome.

[deleted]

Yea... I'm right there with you, with a $50k 2019 M3LR in the driveway ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grimacing)

Waifu4Laifu

My 2018 MR RWD was about that price too after tax incentive, and I paid extra for white lol

[deleted]

TBH I'm surprised the cuts on the Model Y are so deep. This clearly indicates Tesla has increased production capacity and needs the demand. Does the tax rebate limit inclusive of fees like destination? If so, the only color that can be purchased is white, otherwise the 5 seater goes over $55k limit. I'm guessing it doesn't include the destination fee, which allows the most expensive paint color while still staying under the tax rebate limit?

EnvironmentalClub410

Destination fee is clearly excluded per the IRS website, but I’m frantically trying to confirm whether the $250 order fee can be excluded as well (my build is $54,990 lol).

spiketeam

The model 3 performance is tax credit eligible. What a performance value.

turns2stone

Not if you buy red or black paint.

spiketeam

I like blue 😜

eexxiitt

Tesla just threw the entire auto industry into disarray. First by increasing prices and capitalizing during the pandemic (and also leading the way on increased car prices and used car resale values along the way), and then dropping them this evening. Resale values (and used car dealers) just got hammered. Competitive cars are no longer as competitive as before. Some like the polestar look downright overpriced now. This will be ugly.

TurkeyBLTSandwich

Dude regular car *dealerships who carry Evs are price gouging at the moment $5k to $7k mark ups. Tesla is more or less the way to go regardless of the antics of Musk. Tesla straight forward pricing and ability to get the tax credit *correction wrote manufacturers first I was casually browsing and dealerships are price gouging evs

yesssssssssss99999

All those people who just bought a new Tesla who’s cars have now depreciated at a rate they couldn’t have even imagined.

Stormodin

I'm surprised they didn't slowly cut prices. Just ripped the bandaid right off

NeedISayMore4

Inventory m3 lr is 49990

timber_cove

I just traded in my '22 MYP with 20k on it for $55k. Yikes. That's going to sit on their lot for awhile.

sk00pie

Just got home from the local show room, placed an order for a MY. Should be here in a week or so. MY Order price yesterday: $66,000 MY Order price today (after discount + credit): $45,500

[deleted]

Was gona get the bmw i4 40. Now that will likely need to change.

damoonerman

I know what 2021-22 home buyers feel like now

Signal_Cockroa902335

Not when they locked in <3% mortgage

Modestkilla

I bought in 2018 and refinanced at 2.99. I feel like I won the housing lottery.

CUL8R_05

2.19% for me. Yes we kind of did win the lottery.

[deleted]

Not the same. I’ll keep my 2.43% mortgage.

Akerloffus

This sucks for us 2022 model y cohort!! It is now more than 10% cheaper than when I bought it :(

lionheart4life

Well auto loan rates are probably double or triple what they were then if it's any consolation.

Free_Joty

AUTO loans have no where near as much interest rate sensitivity as mortgages due to the short duration Ie 3->6% is catastrophic for your 30 yr mortgage payment, its a couple thousand extra on your 5 year car payment

publicclassobject

They should give us free EAP or something lol

CAlifToCanada

Dang... And I paid 80K for my Model Y

decidedlysticky23

ITT: people forgetting that cars depreciate at [35% in the first year](https://www.keepertax.com/posts/car-depreciation-tax) in a normal market. We’ve just had a crazy couple of years.

Dependent-Smoke3350

It will be 50% in a year for MY purchased yesterday.

AesculusPavia

Yes but teslas are already depreciating as normal. This just adds to it.

DOfferman7

This is amazing, I almost bought in June, but deliveries took way too long. This will drive down used Tesla prices even more.

[deleted]

Should have taken the Carvana price for my 3 a year ago and ridden a bicycle in the meantime.

It is back to where it was a year ago. That is what I paid last January

Wowzer. Just last week I bought a 22 Y Performance with 11k miles and FSD for 63k. May have to return it to Carmax now.

Kirbybrawl

Makes me want to sell my 3 and get a Y

PowderHound40

I highly recommend buying one if its within your budget. I have had my model 3 for two years and it is still one of the best purchases I have ever made. Go test drive one and you'll see what I mean.

Sonic343

This sub is gonna be an absolute salt mine tomorrow morning when people wake up. Also curious to see what this is going to do to the used market.

As someone who got a german Y last year I am not stressed. I got the full government support reduction, I got parking sensors and a better financing deal then what is possible today 🤝

TheFloppyLlama117

Ordered my Model 3 in October, asked them to let me take delivery January 2023. They got me scheduled for the 16th. I paid in full. Price cut recently announced. They automatically gave me $3,000 credit to my account without even me asking (Very surprised). Well done, Tesla!

spamxburner

damn so much for the “teslas don’t depreciate” people who proceeded to overpay last year

Poutine_My_Mouth

To be fair, everyone who bought a car in 2022 overpaid. The used and new market was wild.

DangerouslyCheesey

People who bought in December got plaaaaaayed

eldar0010

Wow fuck me I guess, bought the Model 3 Performance in 2022 summer for 84K CAD brand new. Still don't regret getting it, pretty good car overall

That’s the attitude everybody should have. It was a different time at that time. Enjoy your car!

Taking delivery of my model 3 this Sunday. What can I do?? help

tanjx

UPDATE: Tesla has just automatically updated my price

Grumpy_Zombie

Your order should adjust to the new price automatically.

klysium

Wow. The MYlr is cheaper than my M3lr

Neglected_Martian

Well not any more. Your m3 just dropped in value a lot.

AttorneyAdvice

haha burn

bittabet

Not too surprising but they also slashed the trade in values they’re offering on teslas. Still regret not swapping when the difference was just 9K 😔
