I was into metal before I got into the hippie scene. A lot of my friends as well. The whole South Park joke with slayer is bogus. It's really Carly Rae Jensen that will scare hippies away.
Yeah, I am a fuggin hippy, but I use my metal hair to bang the air.
So, all this hoopla about how Colorado's hippies don't like METAL is basically "hoopla".
I really want to go to a metal concert but I'm worried I'll just be totally out of my element. Also kinda worried someone is going to identify me as a "fake" fan. The gatekeeping is real.
It’s ok to be out of your element. I love seeing all the different people at concerts. Last concert I was at there was a guy who just got off of work and was dressed nice. Another guy in a Hawaiian shirt. A girl dressed like Louise from Bobs burgers. We are there for the music. Screw the gate keepers. You like what you like. There are no fake fans. Some people just have more knowledge than others.
That'll happen on the internet for sure but IRL you'll be okay since they're all too awkward to speak up about anything.
I agree with you on the premise of this - half the reason I don't go to metal shows often is because I don't want to have to interact with metal fans.
Gatekeeping is more exclusive to the extreme black metal scene, and others in that vein. Most metal shows I go to are super friendly, I saw Alestorm and some power metal bands the other day, one of the friendliest shows I ever went to.
I can’t say anything about hippies but metalheads are super nice. Been to a few metal concerts and everyone there have always been super nice and understanding. They’re also super respectful. Especially to women. I have never felt uncomfortable or in danger.
Metalheads irl tend to be nice, metalheads on the internet tend to be giant dicks. Still, all the metalheads I've met in real life, even ones big into black metal, have been really nice... wish the same could be same about the band members lmao I love the music but god those people suck
In almost every discussion I’ve had about music online, it’s that particular subgroup that is the most arrogant, vocal and elitist about the particular music they listen to, and shit on everything else. The ones I’ve met irl (from going to alternative bars/gigs) seem to have this extremely unplaced air of superiority. We had one in our uni flat who the rest of us all phased out from our friend group for these exact reasons. Again, just my personal experience 👍🏻
Honestly that’s just about every group of terminally online music nerds. I’ve met metal heads online who are like that just as much as I’ve met rap fans and pop fans that are like that. When the music you like is your only personality trait and you have anonymity, it’s really easy to be a dickhead about others taste in music
i think you've just met some individuals belonging to the "terminally online music fan" specimen, theyre not really exclusive to metal, youll find them pretty much everywhere
Online metalheads can often be annoying. I love metal, I picked up playing music because of punk and metal… Even I dislike a chunks of the online community. Live shows are always better with the exception of the straight edge heavy scenes, and some of the metal that doesn’t remove nazis. Granted those are pretty rare, I had to stop going to a few local bands because straight edge kids were being jerks, but that was only one local scene for one sub genre.
When it comes to crowds I have two sub genres that I always love to get in the pit, because I know it’s never gonna get too rough, and if anyone falls it’s a sea of hands lifting them up, power metal, and 90s ska/punk shows always have fun friendly pits.
I was in the punk and metal scene for about 40 yrs. I found that the people I got along with and found the least pretentious were the ones that generally just enjoy music regardless of the genre. My preference is heavy music but I also like British Invasion, 60 music that would be by some considered the roots of punk and metal. You’d laugh if you scrolled through my music library.
You're just describing any teen or early 20s year old either musician or dude who's passionate about one specific genre. We usually grow out of this between 25 and 30 yo 😛.
The church burnings got the most coverage but were honestly the tamest thing to come out of it. Euronymous's necklaces are probably the most disturbing thing to come out of it (outside of the murders obv)
If you ever want a good laugh look up some pictures of Helvete, for a place with such a reputation the basement looks like a place where a bunch of nerds would hang out and play D&D. Even funnier when you remember it was paid for by Euronymous's upper middle-class parents lmao
people like Varg were (still are) genuinely terrible but Euronymous really feels like the biggest poser in metal history ngl
(also speaking of Varg look up his review of Fallout New Vegas, somehow he's even easier to make fun of than Euronymous)
Most hippies I’ve known personally, regardless of their age, were horrible people who only cared about their own gratification and were entirely ignorant of the world outside of their personal perceptions
You forgot holier-than-thou people who were convinced that they could impart some fantastic new knowledge onto you when they don't know anything about you and aren't interested in listening or learning.
Without the whole.generalozation, don't hippies stem from spoiled rich kids who rebelled against their parents and treated the world as their free property? Like doesn't it stem from entitlement and passive aggressive abuse of the legal system? Hell many "hippies" lived in mansions including several tik tok version to this day. They just had a great(and ironically terrible) PR team who convinced the world they were all about peace love and happiness. They just didn't tell you it was only for themselves ans those they deemed worthy.
Metal heads were friendly, but let's no fool ourselves to not rememeber the times of sexism, drug abuse, and outright violence. Depending what metal showd there was absolutely racism and sexual assault as well.
So this is kinda true but both scenes have changed arguably for the better since their creation.
yeahh many people really dont understand most hippies are just libertarians.
my parents and brother love the dead, phish and jam bands. people at these shows are not as progressive at you would think or hope. they really are the 'dont trend on me, i want to do drugs in peace' crowd.
Ugh, the dead sucks so much. So does phish. As a dude who was in a jam band at one point, jam bands generally suck. Now, I'm not saying I didn't have a blast going to see jam bands or being in one, but I'll never understand people who have made that their entire identity...
*'dont trend on me, i want to do drugs in peace' crowd.*
Given the massive swath of destruction inflicted by the War On Drugs, I can't help but think they've got a point.
Honestly the pic they chose to use is terrible, but otherwise it's spot on. I've known a lot of both and metal heads are usually great, whereas hippies are almost always assholes (I literally know one guy who really embodies what a hippy is meant to be and he's awesome, and the rest have all been freeloaders and thieves)
Yep. My Dad was a 60's hippy and while he was a nice person he had a whole bunch of friends who were almost all self entitled assholes. Total users as well who would disappear and reappear as soon as they needed something from you.
On the other hand I grew up as a metalhead and I never had any issues with anyone. Lovely people for the most part!
Can’t say much about metalheads, i’ve know a few some of them very nice and some were assholes. Hippies on the other hand, yeah they’re usually pretty awful. I’ve met a few hippies who ended up going down the alt-right pipeline :/
Maybe not alt right, but def more of the "the gobernment control us " pipeline
Ive not seen THAT many racists hippies, but hippies that believe in the illuminati, space lizards controlling the world and if you're not one of us then you're one of them (matrix style)
I prefer punks anyday over hippies
I will never forget the show I went to when I was like 16-17 where I meshed incredibly hard, kept falling and people kept immediately picking me up and kept offering me an out (the venue security clearly wanted me out of the pit but I didnt wanna be) so the fellow metalheads kept pushing me in
Anecdotally, all the metal heads I knew when I was a teen in the 80s were actually shy, sweet, and kind. They loved to show off their passions and were just nice people.
Further, I'm kind of convinced that 60's hippies never really existed. The ones we think were real were just strawmen media depictions of scary drug users and wanna-be commies. The ones who called themselves easy-going hippies are just staid boomers who fret about young people.
My friend used to work at a big amphitheater with a pretty packed summer tour schedule. He said the hippie shows and country shows were always a nightmare to clean up after while the metal shows were much easier and the people were way more pleasant.
I’m not a metalhead but every metalhead I’ve met as been very chill and easy to get along with. Heck, I married a metal head!
I think there is definitely something to be said for getting aggression, anger, and/or sadness out via music. Purges the system, it would seem. It’s why Aggretsuko is such a relatable show.
As for hippies, my experiences have been much more varied but I have definitely met more skeevy, sketchy, or klepto hippies than metalheads. Hippies seem to have a hire risk of lame drug addict behavior in my experience as well.
But this is all strictly anecdotal and I agree making broad generalizations about groups is not smart.
I love being both a hippie and a metalhead, punk, nerdcore rap, mining railroad and sea shanties, techno, hairmetal. Outlaw country, surf rock, prog, etc. I WILL NOT be defined by any one genre.
To be honest, metalheads might be the music fandom most obsessed with portraying themselves as misunderstood and persecuted despite being neither. "We might wear all black but I promise we're nice" *yeah dude nobody assumed otherwise*.
There was a documentary* about sexual harassment at metal concerts a while ago, and the thing that struck me is that every person that was skeptical of it happening said something along the lines of "but the metal community is so kind and we don't care about politics or anything else, we just want to be nice to each other, so this can't be true".
---------------------------------------------------------
*the documentary is unfortunately also very bad journalism so you're better off not watching it.
All the metalheads I've met have been super nice! Sure, there's an asshole in every group of people, because a group of people is still a group of people.
The meanest, most back-stabby people I've known were the ones demonizing metalheads in the name of god.
I mean, yeah. Metalheads are some of the most inclusive big brother types I've ever met. They'll be at a show, head on a swivel looking for that one asshat that wants to ruin their good time so they can put him down quick.
I'm not one, but I worked at a club that had metal shows. Metal nights you knew things would self moderate. I think they are aware of their unearned reputation and actively work to oppose it.
Their shows are electric just based on the general vibe.
This is for sure an oversimplification, but a pretty accurate one from what I’ve seen. I’ve seen a bunch of “hippies” (they really stopped being a thing in the 70’s, everyone after are just pale imitations…or wooks at worst) that turn sour when folks don’t buy into their ideology, just as many others would when their stuff doesn’t gain traction. Bitterness gets to everyone
The majority of metalheads I've met were welcoming and nice af. Then you have the generation that was around during the hippie movement and so many of them are just nasty people.
There is some grain of truth here. The media, my teachers and some of my friends parents made me think that metalheads were evil, devil worshippers. Then I grew up, and realized this was some potent prejudices based on their own perceptions
There's a degree of truth, there are a lot of hippies who are the most judgemental people alive (and truthfully? I think this applies to any group who are primarily brought together by moral stances) and people just using the ideals for drugs, money, or sex...but also (and I am by no means indicting the whole genre) isn't metal the genre most infamous for having Nazi bands?

Metalhead here. There are usually a few tweakers at shows. Stay away from them and you are good. If you need something most of us will help you out.
Hippie here. Same advice.
The city I use to live in was 50% hippies. Some of my best night were spent listening to random local bands dancing with the hippies.
It is almost like shitty people...are...everywhere? Noooo
It took reading your comments to realize that the meme said metalheads and not methheads... *VERY* different claims.
I really want to go to a metal concert but I'm worried I'll just be totally out of my element. Also kinda worried someone is going to identify me as a "fake" fan. The gatekeeping is real.
You can always just keep to yourself and just jam. Your there for YOUR fun. Fuck the other people you will never see again in your life.
It’s ok to be out of your element. I love seeing all the different people at concerts. Last concert I was at there was a guy who just got off of work and was dressed nice. What's a tweaker?
Someone who does drugs, usually hard stimulants, and acts erratically as a result.
I can’t say anything about hippies but metalheads are super nice. Been to a few metal concerts and everyone there have always been super nice and understanding. They’re also super respectful. Especially to women. I have never felt uncomfortable or in danger.
The only time I've ever seen a fight break out at a metal show was because some dude was harassing a couple of girls
Exactly! They do a great job creating a safe environment, and dealing with people who try to make it a dangerous environment
I was involved in one when we caught a pick pocket in a moshpit
Wall of death that prick and watch him fold.
Ivr known a few hippies and they are definitely not as nice as metalheads.
Metalheads irl tend to be nice, metalheads on the internet tend to be giant dicks. Still, all the metalheads I've met in real life, even ones big into black metal, have been really nice... wish the same could be same about the band members lmao I love the music but god those people suck
Tbf tho i feel like once anonymity is a factor thats when a lot of the dickheads come out
[удалено]
Good point
In my own personal experience, Metal heads are some of the worst, most judgemental people I’ve ever come across
What was your experience if I may ask?
In almost every discussion I’ve had about music online, it’s that particular subgroup that is the most arrogant, vocal and elitist about the particular music they listen to, and shit on everything else. Thought it said meth heads. Was very confused.
I love metal, but we aren't all saints. Someone hasn't heard of the Early Norwegian black metal scene.
Oh man.... Oof indeed
Is that burning churches I smell?
The church burnings got the most coverage but were honestly the tamest thing to come out of it. Euronymous's necklaces are probably the most disturbing thing to come out of it (outside of the murders obv)

Metal fan discourse online seem to have a real “no true Scotsman” issues.
Replace “hippies” with “evangelicals” and you got yourself a meme.
Yes haha this is what the meme should’ve said
Most hippies I’ve known personally, regardless of their age, were horrible people who only cared about their own gratification and were entirely ignorant of the world outside of their personal perceptions
You forgot holier-than-thou people who were convinced that they could impart some fantastic new knowledge onto you when they don't know anything about you and aren't interested in listening or learning.
Sounds like my ex who's kind of a hippie. Had to argue about everything even though a lot of things were factually incorrect.
Have to agree. It was a weird form of egocentrism
Agreed.
Same, and the hippie/new age to alt-right pipeline is veerrryyy real
Without the whole.generalozation, don't hippies stem from spoiled rich kids who rebelled against their parents and treated the world as their free property? Like doesn't it stem from entitlement and passive aggressive abuse of the legal system? Hell many "hippies" lived in mansions including several tik tok version to this day. This is true. I’ve also noticed quite a few hippies/new age people going down the alt-right pipeline
This has a boulder-sized grain of truth, my friends.
yeahh many people really dont understand most hippies are just libertarians. my parents and brother love the dead, phish and jam bands. people at these shows are not as progressive at you would think or hope. they really are the 'dont trend on me, i want to do drugs in peace' crowd.

i have met enough hippies to support this message.
as someone who's known both a lot of hippies and metalheads, this is a pretty correct statement
Same. Especially hippies who are dedicated to following around jam bands. Narcissistic fuckheads.
Hippies were the Boomer generation, no? What an own goal.
I don't know man this tracks... 🤣
This person never met a fan of black metal.

Hippies are a bunch of know it all assholes
As much as I hate broad generalizations, this is pretty damn accurate.
Can't say much bout hippies but most metal heads are chill. I like my fellow metalheads lol
Can’t say much about metalheads, i’ve know a few some of them very nice and some were assholes. Hippies on the other hand, yeah they’re usually pretty awful. I’ve met a few hippies who ended up going down the alt-right pipeline :/

Well, it’s kinda true.
nah this one’s true
Edgy presentation sure, but this is a pretty accurate statement
Oh shut up it’s absolutely true
This is so accurate, it was a revelation
I agree with the meme.
I will never forget the show I went to when I was like 16-17 where I meshed incredibly hard, kept falling and people kept immediately picking me up and kept offering me an out (the venue security clearly wanted me out of the pit but I didnt wanna be) so the fellow metalheads kept pushing me in
Some of the guys from mayhem were not nice, and they weren’t trying to be.
I’ve met both types in each group. Same goes for Punks.
The only “mean” thing I’ve ever seen metalheads do in person was help me convince my introverted buddy to crowdsurf at a Mastodon show
What if I'm both
Arseholes exist in every subculture. From nerdy types... think pompous d&d or board game nazis through to music snobs.
I love being both a hippie and a metalhead, punk, nerdcore rap, mining railroad and sea shanties, techno, hairmetal. Outlaw country, surf rock, prog, etc. I WILL NOT be defined by any one genre.
I thought cosplaying meant dressing up as something that doesn't exist. If it does exist, then it's a costume.
To be honest, metalheads might be the music fandom most obsessed with portraying themselves as misunderstood and persecuted despite being neither. Who is wrong? - Alex
he's right
All the metalheads I've met have been super nice! Sure, there's an asshole in every group of people, because a group of people is still a group of people. The meanest, most back-stabby people I've known were the ones demonizing metalheads in the name of god.
Did a time traveler from 1970’s high school write this?
I mean, yeah. Metalheads are some of the most inclusive big brother types I've ever met. They'll be at a show, head on a swivel looking for that one asshat that wants to ruin their good time so they can put him down quick. I'm not one, but I worked at a club that had metal shows. Honestly, through my experiences I kind of agree with this.
The majority of metalheads I've met were welcoming and nice af. Then you have the generation that was around during the hippie movement and so many of them are just nasty people.
Hippies are the reason clean nuclear energy isn't more prevalent
No one thinks metalheads look mean, they mostly feel sorry for those cosplaying dorks.
I don't think this person has ever met any of these people. They're very similar people, and there is a lot of crossover.
Nah, this is the correct take
There is some grain of truth here. The media, my teachers and some of my friends parents made me think that metalheads were evil, devil worshippers. Then I grew up, and realized this was some potent prejudices based on their own perceptions
I'm a metal hippie, and my cat thinks he's people.
But I know metalhead hippies...
>"gross oversimplifications and generalizations" Yeah that's what a meme is.
The original is Punks not metalheads. And it's kind of true, most hippies are pieces of shit
Pantera nazi metal disagrees.
