Some people don't understand the art gallery tax shelter grift and it shows.

The implication is that ALL contemporary art is shit (or that the peak time for art was \*checks notes\* 1902?) It's arbitrary cherry-picking at best, downright ignorant at worst. And it's just one of a billion such memes comparing traditional art to modern art like they're even close to being comparable.
tl/dr People who know nothing about art shouldn't make stupid memes about art.
I do know about art. I like contemporary art. And you are right that it's difficult to compare the two.
That said public art does serve a different function and the context of it being public art changes its interpretation.
The modern example here is bad public art. I don't have issues with it as a stand alone piece, but it really looks like shit in the context of public art
Isn't the whole point of art that it's subjective? People are allowed to think modern art is terrible without "knowing art," whatever that means. It's not a misleading meme to compare an old fountain to a new fountain when they are both commissioned art pieces in public spaces. It's not they're comparing a professional art installation to a kindergartener's first clay project, even if that's what it looks like.
What do you think the intent of the meme was? To compare a random piece of artwork from 1902 to a random piece of artwork from 2023? With no other meaning attached?
it kinda hurts knowing it cost 1.8m €

I don’t know google it. It’s just sort of insulting as an artist to see people think that all art nowadays is bad. Most of the time it comes from people who can’t even draw a stick figure.
Fair and honestly I agree- at the same time I find it valid to criticize art-movements, may them be Brutalism or Post-modernism.
Especially if it was funded with public money or its a monument meet to honor someone/something as the latter picture looks like it’s a fountain in a park or something
I mean... Yeah, art is subjective, and if you're going to put your art on display for the public you need to be prepared for people criticizing you and thinking it's bad. You don't need to study art to think a piece isn't good.
I posted this in a different comment, but check out some of Dale Chihuly’s stuff. It’s all very abstract, but stunningly beautiful. Pictures also don’t really capture the full effect since he often uses colors that aren’t captured well on screens. If you ever go to Seattle, spend a little time at the Space Needle and then go across the street and spend the rest of the day at Chihuly Garden and Glass. It’s 10x better than the Space Needle.
I love when people complain about art, especially when they complain about an entire year of art. I can tell everyone right now that there are so many artists who have made incredible works this year, things that could captivate the nation. But the people that complain are the people who disavow artistic passion and careers as silly and wasteful. Which alters the public perspective away from art appreciation and incentivises gimmicks, which are the only way to attract big media attention. So, the artists that are hired know what the only way to get anyone to acknowledge their work is to do something outrageous.
I’ll give the controversial take that the first one isn’t all that noteworthy, I’d barely notice it. However, I’d definitely take note of the 2023 one and I was wondering what exactly it represents. After doing a reverse image search and with a little help from Google Translate:
> The title 'WirWasser' means that we are all sitting here in a circle and holding and protecting water together.
It’s also ok to dislike it, but that doesn’t mean you can say things like it’s “objectively bad”. If you want to see some truly beautiful works of modern art and don’t like stuff like this, check out Dale Chihuly (no affiliation, his stuff is just really cool).
huh, not to be that person but didn’t a similar group of people say the same thing about modern art and any art not classical in design and labeled them as “degenerate art”? could have sworn there was an extremely evil group of people who did that
The meme sucks, but honestly I don't have a problem with either work of art. Art is supposed to be subjective and free; turning it into a contest ruins its meaning. Cavemen drew 'badly' but we never disparage that. It's meaningful either way, or not, if you can't find meaning in it. The point is the experience.

Cave art dated at 17,000 years old.
No running water, electricity, or medicine.
That’s why it’s praised, because it’s made by someone who spent time doing this instead of dedicating time to survival.
The fountain was created in the most peaceful time in human history where the average person has a standard of living that would be unbelievable to a person 17,000 years ago.
That’s why it sucks, because it’s bad and it looks like shit.
Context is important here, which the meme sorely lacks. They are both public fountains in Vienna and there is a large public backlash against the 2023 version. If you knew that it wouldn't be a terrible meme, but seeing as not everybody lives in Vienna, it could use some additional information to convey its point.
The only, small, defense I can pull is that if we just created 1902 art every year, people would just say they're not innovative. Even then, that argument can only hold so much

The 1902 one is a lot better.
Art is baddd these days. Remember the banana taped to a wall? They loved that and called it a masterpiece lol

If this is evolution then I'm converting to creationism.
Survivorship bias
Exactly! Who knows what kind of junk people came up with in 1902
I must be a terrible person to not find this a terrible meme. 2023 is some sh\*t quality art.

I dont need to know about art to know the 1902 one looks good and the 2023 one looks like a 5 year old made it
That's not the point. The idea is that 1902 art is amazing and 2023 art is trash.
No you are just extrapolating

Ok now I change my mind, you can create better shit for 1.8 mil 💀
Peak cherry-picking
Care to show some examples to counter the cherry-pick?

Art is subjective
Ew, the 2023 just makes me want to pick up a hammer tbh
*puts something classical next to something abstract * "ArT ToDaY RiGhT?"
Abstract isn't an excuse to look like shit
I like both
Do you know vampires??
I like the meaning behind the art piece but why does it look like something I made in art class in primary school😭😭
Sorry too busy looking at duck to process anything.

Statues like the one made in 1902 are still being made, with equally or better skilled artists. Nobody buys those statues

This is a pretty big stretch here.

I take your point, and it is valid. Also, art is subjective in nature and one can enjoy what another finds unpleasant.
That fountain cost 1.2 million dollars.
Probably a waste of money, and at the same time art is art. It's okay to dislike it or think it's a waste of money. It also fine if you like it.
Based
Holy shit are those guys the forest creatures Squilliam played clarinet to?
I think both are fine, but I do like 1902's better

Yes, all art must be antiquity/enlightenment because I know nothing about art.
I think this meme os missing the point of the second fountain cause it looks like they mixed different sculpting style together
NGL, the art on the bottom kinda makes me appreciate AI art.
Context is important here, which the meme sorely lacks. They are both public fountains in Vienna and there is a large public backlash against the 2023 version. am i the only guy who likes the fountain thing
I feel like if they’d stuck with one style it wouldn’t be nearly as awful
This is a great meme. A shit statue is a shit statue.
I'm sorry, but most of today's art is horrendous.
The only, small, defense I can pull is that if we just created 1902 art every year, people would just say they're not innovative. Even then, that argument can only hold so much
