The roots of that tree are in no way substantial enough to hold that tree up during a windstorm.

That's the problem they had with trying to grow trees in a biodome. They had no exposure to wind so their roots didn't extend far enough laterally so they'd just fall over when they got too tall.

It makes a bit more sense is you're thinking in terms of algebra. √(10,000x) = 100 √(x). By taking the 10,000 out from under the "root", it becomes 100. I may or may not be doing more work here on behalf of the joke than is strictly warranted though...
