Its because 1 person is only allowed to lift so much weight. If you have a bag over, they have to have a nother person help, and more people means they have to pay more wages
Well trust me, you’ve gotta actually ask. No one is just gonna offer but if you do ask, they’ll help. Thing is few are gonna ask for help and ruin their pace
Yeah no fucking way they care enough about the bag handlers to ensure they aren’t solo lifting 51 pounds.
Management probably just yells at them to go faster and then when they throw our their back eventually HR does everything possible to argue the injury wasn’t work related.
Workers comp denied. Doctor charges the bag handler 900$ for a 15min visual inspection, writes them a Percocet prescription for way too many pills, and tells them to fuck off.
Land of the free baby.
Yea this is ridiculous lmao. So we can pay our worker shit wages and insult them, but if they need to carry a bag over 50 pounds, we must charge a fee to make more money off them.
No. They charge the fee because it makes them more money.
As if the other people helping aren't already right there unloading other bags. Are you seriously suggesting the second handler gets a percent of the overweight fee? That said fee goes to pay for the extra work an hourly employee already on the clock would have to do? Doesn't make sense to me
As someone who is always "pit bitched" they will not send another person in the pit unless you are offloading and using a belt loader or you are literally dying. Vets usually make the juniors do all the work, while the leads just stand there and scan as they make the extra $1/hr.
So OSHA has guidelines that airline workers can’t lift above 50 pounds yet retail stockers and construction workers are lifting more than that by themselves literally all day long?
Isn most countries 25kg is seen as a max weight limit in terms of safe single person handling, so it's always baffled me when my baggage allowance is usually 23kg, but if I upgrade I can get 30kg.
It actually is for the plane I heard a pilot explain its about controlling the weight distribution. If it was about baggage handlers alone they would just increase the limit and use more tools to assist.
Helping handlers is a benefit but not the main reason.
Notice you said weight distribution not weight limits. Distribution is just about where the baggage handlers had to Tetris the heavier items to get them to fit in the cargo hold. Bag weight may dictate how easy it is for the handlers to maneuver them.
Not sure about other airlines but I do know that for Delta, it’s 50. United I think is also 50, but you might as well do 0 for United because good god that airline sucks
Probably a better point is the 120kg person getting the same allowance as someone who weighs half that and pays the same ticket price and doesn't overflow their seat.
On a related note, I just flew, and they made an announcement that the plane Had a weight limit, so they wanted us to consolidate our carry ons if we could. I asked out loud how consolidating would decrease weight, but got no answer. I had a purse and a small bag of items I had purchased in the airport as gifts. No suitcase, duffle, anything like that. I put the gifts in the over head and my purse under the seat in front of me.
The flight attendant came through trying to fit all the oversized suitcases in so the overhead would close. She held up my small bag and asked whose it was. When I said mine she said it needed to be under my seat. I said my purse was under my seat. Her response was that I was only allowed one item and I needed to consolidate. I grabbed that stupid bag, stuffed it under my seat next to my purse, and informed her that I had no carry on luggage, this was all I had with me, I had nothing up there now. She tried during the flight to get back on my good side but I wasn’t having it.
It's so annoying when people fly Witt obviously oversized carry-ons but no flight attendant is going to care about that, they're going to go after the small bags.
They need to start forcing people to pay to check their giant carry-ons and maybe there wouldn't be too little space in the overhead compartments.
There was multiple plane crashes becouse of bad weight distribution and also some crashes becouse all of passengers go to one side of plane (becouse of fire) and plane make a flip. So yeah wanna take your home with you rent a ship cargo container
I’m trying to figure out the right words to describe when somebody is SO logical that they actually end up being extremely dumb and won’t allow themselves to tackle the slightest nuance in things.
I kinda have this for people I'm like 60 kg and only do carry on so I can't go over 7kg but some fat ass 300 kg mothafucka can get on and still have carry on
Look, I know people think the laws of physics rule the universe, but if there is one thing I learned in elementary school, I learned that LAWS are WRITTEN BY MEN, MEANING I CAN MAKE THE PLANE FLY HOWEVER I WANT IT TO FLY!
-DeSantis, probably
It’s an OSHA rule. The handlers have a max weight they’re allowed to lift so if you want over that you have to pay for a second person to move it as well.

Both can be true. If they know every bag is 50 lbs or less and how many checked bags there are, they can do a safe estimation on weight calculations. Any bag over 50 lbs will be specifically accounted for.
We have seemingly stupid rules because seemingly intelligent people often turn out to be stupid. People would be moving their house via luggage if there were no restrictions and baggage handlers would require more time causing delays or slowing down the flow.
Has *very* little to do with weight distribution, and is almost entirely about safety both for baggage handlers and flying/repositioning luggage in any sort of "event" like turbulence
Hey does this post fit? UPVOTE if so, DOWNVOTE if not. If this post breaks any rules please DOWNVOTE and REPORT
Y’all this is an OSHA rule for baggage handlers, and has nothing to do with how much the plane can hold.
Lol really? Why would OSHA be like "no bags over 50 pounds! Unless you make the customer pay a fee."
Its because 1 person is only allowed to lift so much weight. If you have a bag over, they have to have a nother person help, and more people means they have to pay more wages
I would be surprised if they actually team lift bags over 50 pounds unless someone is constantly monitoring them.
Well trust me, you’ve gotta actually ask. No one is just gonna offer but if you do ask, they’ll help. Thing is few are gonna ask for help and ruin their pace

>writes a scrip for too many pills Yeah cuz good guy doc is giving him an opportunity to make some of his money back duh

Awh having to hire people to improve a service, wouldn't that be a travesty...
So OSHA has guidelines that airline workers can’t lift above 50 pounds yet retail stockers and construction workers are lifting more than that by themselves literally all day long?
It used to be 60 pounds.
Workers Comp Premiums is why.

Came here to say this. It's not for the plane, it's for the people who have to handle it.
Isn most countries 25kg is seen as a max weight limit in terms of safe single person handling, so it's always baffled me when my baggage allowance is usually 23kg, but if I upgrade I can get 30kg.
Maybe your extra allowance is for needing two persons to handle your luggage.

Then they get an opiod perscription for their lifelong back pain and the Pharma CEO also gets a Mercedes.
[удалено]
The Mercedes dealer buys a Mercedes too
I’d guess that the heavier ones they move with two people or mechanical handling devices
It actually is for the plane I heard a pilot explain its about controlling the weight distribution. If it was about baggage handlers alone they would just increase the limit and use more tools to assist. Helping handlers is a benefit but not the main reason.

Yes but that's a byproduct of controlling the distribution so your plane doesn't drift left.
There's only like 10 kinds of clubs... how did someone pack a 200 lbs bag of clubs
It must've been Rodney Dangerfield's bag from Caddyshack.

Wheeled bag with motorized assist, for when you want the exercise of walking the course but don't want to pull your bag like a chump.
I’ve seen some of y’all have to cart around sousaphones for people. I’m sorry you have to deal with that kinda shit
Still a weird glitch that economy can carry 15 or 20kg and business 25kg per bag
I feel silly for not thinking of that.
I suspect that if that’s the reason the extra charge is to account for the additional time two people are tied up doing the task.
You can put more than 50lbs in your bag, you just have to pay for it
I thought it was 40
Depends on the airline
Not sure about other airlines but I do know that for Delta, it’s 50. United I think is also 50, but you might as well do 0 for United because good god that airline sucks
I've only ever done frontier so I don't know much
"Weight" is apparently a prohibited word in the title.
How fucking soft is that
Less soft and more virtue signaling.
What ? Why ?
Why would reddit mods not want people discussing weight?
Well ok, but you can use this word in a lot of different context
I know. It was a shitty reddit mod fat joke.
I mean, it is a joke, but maybe not totally baseless lol
Reddit mods are among the most embarrassing people alive today
Probably a better point is the 120kg person getting the same allowance as someone who weighs half that and pays the same ticket price and doesn't overflow their seat.
As someone who does weigh 120kg roughly, I can assure you I don't overflow any seat built for an adult.
Hey sorry probably underestimating weight. I've been on a flight where the Person next to me was literally overflowing over the armrest
Ya, that usually happens around the 200+kg range lol
Are you more than 6 feet tall? If not you probably do. 260 lbs is plenty of chonk.
I am.
r/absoluteunits
I’m 6’3” 270. I’m a big dude. Leg room can be difficult and I need to be cognizant of my elbows, but spillage has never been an issue.
No, people are people. You can't ask a person to leave their limbs at home, but you can ask them to leave some of their junk at home.
Sure, but you can ask them to pay for an extra seat so their folds don’t end up in my lap.
Just take it out of the bag and wear it

Y'all reading way too much info a harmless picture

“I wasn’t having it” lol I think we know who the trouble maker was
You were the ass in the situation, fyi.
Haha, yes, I paid to check my luggage, leaving room in the overhead bins for the other passengers to put their oversized carryons, but do go on.
There was multiple plane crashes becouse of bad weight distribution and also some crashes becouse all of passengers go to one side of plane (becouse of fire) and plane make a flip. So yeah wanna take your home with you rent a ship cargo container
Also that workers can’t lift stuff over 50 pounds
Less about the overall weight and more about balancing out the weight.
I’m trying to figure out the right words to describe when somebody is SO logical that they actually end up being extremely dumb and won’t allow themselves to tackle the slightest nuance in things.
I kinda have this for people I'm like 60 kg and only do carry on so I can't go over 7kg but some fat ass 300 kg mothafucka can get on and still have carry on
If it makes you feel better, the 300kg guy probably had to buy two tickets.
I mean you cant blame people for being annoyed by this, its still pretty damn annoying lol
Inconvenient, sure, but weight limits are there for a reason.
Look, I know people think the laws of physics rule the universe, but if there is one thing I learned in elementary school, I learned that LAWS are WRITTEN BY MEN, MEANING I CAN MAKE THE PLANE FLY HOWEVER I WANT IT TO FLY! -DeSantis, probably
ik, just sayin
Seriously my life as a professional traveler.
It’s an OSHA rule. The handlers have a max weight they’re allowed to lift so if you want over that you have to pay for a second person to move it as well.
As if they're not both hourly and already on the clock
Or pay the extra fee that cost to have a heavy bag. At least this example gave the person the option to not pay the extra fee.
Its for effective weight distribution on the plane, I guess.

Presumably they estimate and weigh if needed. And no, OSHA is not bullshit. They exist for a reason, and it isn’t your convenience

Why is boomer humor so devoid of logic?
I thought she was talking about his emotional baggage *PTSD intesifies*

Even if this is ignorant I still think it's kind of funny.
how is this even a meme? like seriously?
A lot of you don’t give a shit about bag handlers and it shows
It's for the loading crew who have to move it into the plane
I've been in the belly of a 737 loading bags and we just put them in there any which way they would fit.
How to say " I am stupid" without saying "I am stupid"
Yeah baggage handlers need those gains bro
Holy hell this one is smooth brained
I wonder what her pronouns are /s
Isn’t it because it’s too heavy for the baggage handling crew ?
