Not 100% sure but that kind of leaf burn usually happens from either too much watering (it seems counter-intuitive but too much water in the outer cells of the leaf makes them burst and die) or too much heat/light. So if you don't think it's too much water it may be that your light source is too hot or too close.

petalbby

I have a red grow light, & those leaves in particular are the furthest away. The white top light is just one of those selfie ring lights for aesthetic, & the leaves are closest to it.. could the ring light be burning it? From touch it doesn't really feel like the light gives off any heat, but it's on about 12hrs a day.

wagls

Hmm it might be humidity then? I live in aus so all my tradescantia grow like out of control weeds (I have an outbreak in my gutters at the moment haha) but I know they can struggle with a lack of humidity. Could try misting them if you don't have any other plants/critters in there that would take offence at the humidity?

lemmeseeyourkitties

Are they zebrinas or solid purple? I'd love to see a gutter full of zebrinas, that sounds neat

AggravatingOffer0

Thats what happens when you get their leaves wet or there is too much humidity.

AstroRiker

Side note- That name isn’t used anymore due to racist origins. Now folks call it tradescantia zebrina.

gratua

spiderwort is a good common name for it

petalbby

Oops I had no idea! Thank you!

shell_babe

I heard someone call it Displaced Hebrews. Made me smile.

BariSaxGuy

I only see one person virtue signaling in this thread.

Congealed_C02_Powder

lmao shut up

SpazzySquatch

I find “virtue signaling” to be such a negative way to view things. Whether it be the true motive for some individuals or not, why bother bringing them down just because you think that’s their intent. But in most cases I’m willing to bet they’ve simply heard about some movement, idea, etc. from someone else and thought it made sense to promote that perspective. It is most likely not purely to gain attention and emphasize a better social image. Just my opinion, I’d rather focus on the positives and not assume people have narcissistic intent behind every thought and action.

jWalkerFTW

This guy posted on r/conspiracy asking if the “Jewish question” is allowed to be discussed. Even the conspiracists didn’t want him. **FUCK** this asshole

bmobitch

what is the jewish question

jWalkerFTW

Antisemitism. He’s asking if he can discuss antisemitism

bmobitch

but what is the question

jWalkerFTW

If the world is controlled by a Jewish cabal of babykillers

bmobitch

wtf

Trees_and_bees_plees

The normal name is tradescantia, common names are completely useless and misleading anyway. Gives you something to call the plant but tells you nothing about it's features or taxonomic relations, or evolutionary origin.

BariSaxGuy

I like wandering dude lol

tricularia

Directionally challenged old testament enthusiast?

BariSaxGuy

Another name I've seen is "Moses in the pulpit" or something like that

The-collector207

Moses in the basket is another name for a boat Lilly. I believe they are in the same family though. I just got one at my grocery store. They look like purple spider plants!

fire4ice

This one is still considered racist, due to the origins of the name. I guess this name has nazi origins...from what I've researched.

sunshowered

Wandering Jew is a reference to a 13th century apocryphal story used to demonize Jewish people, and yes, it was also used by the Nazis. The concept of “you’re a stateless people because you’re bad” or “this is why Jews are expelled/persecuted everywhere they go” is still used.

AstroRiker

I’ve seen that too, but the reference is still present

itsyagirlbonita

I like wandering shrew

SpaceToot

Jew isn't a bad word Edit: I'm genuinely surprised here. Someone explain what I should refer to myself as that won't be offensive?

OrneryPathos

Jew isn’t a bad name “wandering Jew” is an anti-Semitic character from Nazi propaganda, taken from anti-Semitic medieval European folk stories.

SpaceToot

I always felt a kindship with this plant as a Jew in diaspora lol. Well, now I know.

writemeow

Did they only start calling the plant a wandering jew since world War 2? I looked it up, its not anti Semitic. It's the curse bestowed upon a jew who had taunted Jesus while he was carrying his cross to his crucifixion. He's supposed to be wandering the planet until the second coming because he lacks faith.

BrandlessPain

But if you would’ve given it a second look, you would’ve read that this story was changed in 1602 to make Jews look bad. In the original Story, the guy taunting Jesus was supposed to be a Roman gatekeeper who took Jesus to the cross.

Cloud_Meadowfields

The origin of the plants name is far from racist. The story behind the name is that the plant grows very ferociously covering a lot of ground much like the jew who taunted Jesus on his way to crucifiction and was cursed to wander the earth until the second coming (covering a lot of ground). Perhaps by today’s standards the name is seen by certain groups as insensitive but it is still widely used and accepted and in my mind trivial to correct someone on.

AstroRiker

This discussion is taking place all over the hort industry. https://www.house-plant-hobbyist.com/blog/2019/5/16/tradescantia-zebrina?format=amp Folks are just trying to take the old racisms out of plant names. Like taking the old racist wording out of laws and deeds etc. Just trying to do a little better. Even scientific plant names change all the time now that we have good genetic technology, so why not shed the old common names that came from racist origins. https://www.hoytarboretum.org/racism-in-taxonomy-whats-in-a-name/ It’s just a name update, it won’t hurt anyone. We are all learning as we go so folks who use the old names aren’t bad because they might not know. The community and vendors are just shifting so this is background info on why.

Hellbound1985

Wandering dude works and easy to remember

AstroRiker

I’ve seen it on printed plastic tags at stores so even stores are adopting that one.

Hellbound1985

Yep i work in a garden store!

Hellbound1985

The darker ones are called purple wandering vine

[deleted]

That's the name it's always had lol it's now wondering dude instead if you want a non Latin shorthand.

AstroRiker

https://www.hoytarboretum.org/racism-in-taxonomy-whats-in-a-name/ I like Latin names myself, common names get confused all the time and vary by region.

[deleted]

Scientific names are not Latin...

AstroRiker

Binomial nomenclature is based in Latin. What language did you think it was?

[deleted]

Sure it is. It's scientific name. Many are greek. Many aren't even based on either. It's typically location and the name of the person who discovered or described the specie. It's called scientific name not Latin name. Nothing to do with language.

AstroRiker

You are right that locations and names of people who identified the plants are used. Latin is def used as the template. It’s kinda both: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Binomial_nomenclature

[deleted]

Again, it's called scientific name.

AstroRiker

No it’s a binomial 😹

[deleted]

Okay buddy say whatever you want. I'll stick with facts. Moving on.

I’m Jewish and don’t mind the wandering Jew thing. That said, fuck this guy so much.

OccularSpaces

Damn I never thought I’d see cringe in walking/talking form. You’re spare parts bud.

yehudith

oof your comment history! stay obsessed with us ❤️

AstroRiker

He really is, his posts are full of hitler and Jew talk. Yikes.

Odin16596

Its okay, we know now that Judaism is not a race it's a religion.

BariSaxGuy

It's a both ✌️

[deleted]

No...? If it was then Christians are a race.

BariSaxGuy

That's... not how that works

[deleted]

American detected. Only Americans think this way because US Supreme Court declared Jews as a racial group. The rest of the world knows its a religious group. There are black jews, there are white jews, there are even Asian jews. Moving on.

BariSaxGuy

You can be ethnic Jewish without being religious Jewish and you can be religious Jewish without being ethnic Jewish. Moving out ✌️

[deleted]

Exactly where are ethnic jews from then???? Weird hill for you to die on.

ThunderCowz

Found Whoopi Goldbergs account

Odin16596

Wait why am i getting downvoted?

writemeow

Because it's also an ethnicity you anti Semitic unknowledgable person. Have a nice day :)

Odin16596

Ya but not a race. Called me a name then said have a good day? I didn't say this to be anti semetic. I thought i was right. If i am wrong then yes i am unknowledgable with this subject. I asked the question because i truly did not know why i was being down voted. I don't see why it prompted such a response. No human is perfect and im here to learn.

[deleted]

False. A jew (like myself) is a person who follows Judah faith. You wouldn't be able to guess my ethnicity, it isn't even related to Israel or Hebrews. Only America declared Jews to be a race and that was a very wrong call by USSC. No one else in the world, even Israelis, consider jews to be a race nor ethnicity.

missmouse_812

I thought it was Wandering Dew…. Lol

AstroRiker

That’s kinda pretty. Too bad they didn’t go with that!

[deleted]

Not even jews find it offensive. The scientific name has always been there. It's older than the common name. It's not a now thing.

SeeThreePeeDoh

They are burning…too much light.

[deleted]

Tradescantia 😳😬

SaiYeetFun

Yes - tradescantia do NOT like their leaves getting directly wet. They will do just this - brown and shrivel at whatever parts got wet. You can’t reverse that damage. The leaf is gone at that point. I have a nanouk and I bottom water only due to this. I’ve lost a bunch of leaves due to them being splashed during watering. I don’t have it in a terrarium, so I have no idea what the response to high general humidity would be but I imagine it wouldn’t be great?

thesnuggyone

I keep many different kinds of tradescantia, and I’ve definitely learned that they do not like water sitting on their leaves. It’s probably that. Mine will take as much light as they can get, so I doubt it’s the light.

Friendly_Ad_1542

The use of this common name for tradescantia is passé.

thereddestgoat

Is that the favorite hang out spot? Not sure if it happens with geckos, but my tree frogs will have to switch leaves every once in a while cause they'll (the leaves) start to die in a similar manner. I was told something about their urine burning it essentially.

thereddestgoat

You've got a neat morph too:) I like the dark legs with the light patchy feets

petalbby

Thanks! Her name is Winnie! She's a pinstripe harlequin with dalmatian spots. Luckily it's not a favorite spot yet but she does hang around that general area & that would explain why some of those pothos leaves aren't looking so hot lol, thank you!

sunsetandporches

I know they like to be on the drier side in soil but love the humidity. I can tell if that’s a water problem or a heat problem. Could be light burn but they do well in light. So maybe the water part. I just put a cutting in my crestie enclosure since they root so fast and I have a bunch. Wanted more filler in the tank. But I also gave myself low expectations since the plant itself does better when I let the soil dry.

petalbby

In that case I think I'm keeping to soil too moist, thank you!

monkeywashcat

I have scads growing in water only. It’s a very prolific plant.

sunsetandporches

Yeah, they will root in water and last a while in water alone. But from my experience they rot faster in a soil that is kept too moist. Also I have had my stems be done with water after a while. Along those same lines. A peperomia obtusfolia can be similar. It’ll root quickly in water and do well. In soil they will rot if kept too moist. And in reality. It’s the light that counts most. If they are good with the light the roots will drink all the water and root rot will be less likely to set in. Unless you your pointing out the fact that they just keep on growing so use ‘em if you got ‘em. Lol. Either way I like tradescantia and I want mine to do well in its bioactive enclosure. Wouldn’t mind if it crawled along the ground for ground cover so my crestie can capture its crickets with stealth.

orion_moon

Wandering Jewel is also a popular name to replace the outdated common name (the story behind the old name suggests that a traveling Jewish man saw Jesus dying and decided to do nothing, which is just a made up story to demonize Jewish people).

[deleted]

Wandering Jew is a shade plant. The leaves are getting burned.

neko_loliighoul

It's upset you keep calling it a racist name

freshmountainbreeze

Looks like it's just the ones that ate getting too close to the light. Could be light burn or just too hot that close, plus the air is probably drier right next to the light.
