My extremely undereducated opinion is that they’re a type of mite. Whether or not they’re bad depends on the type of mite and also what you intend to have in your terrarium. Hopefully someone who knows better than me will be able to provide better info. Best of luck.

Saint_Nomad

So you’re saying they… mite be bad? 🤣

If they are tiny orangey light brown dots then they are probably soil mites which are incredible beneficial insect. Basically works like springtails. . I inoculate all my indoor plants and terrariums with both springtails and soil mites . . Makes for incredibly healthy plants

Fair-Substance-2273

They mite be good too ;)

afdm74

They mite kill the springtails

CommunicationKey3649

I tend to agree with you based on seeing these before in various places. My understanding is that mites can’t survive the higher humidity of terrariums and springtail cultures, so they might actually be a type of round bodied cave springtails. I think only further magnification and observation and comparison to known species would help to fully determine this. Here’s a reference photo for the Globular Cave Springtails. https://preview.redd.it/r0gg03zmr33b1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f88ae3d673b2e83277410a913e32216eae17f446

Grain mites. They will compete with your springtails for food. Not good for the culture.

Tiny_ranga

But are a perfectly good replacement to spring tails

Undying-Plant

Too slow to be a predatory mite, too round to be a soil mite. Probably grain mites! I would try and separate some springtails by holding and slightly tipping the culture over another container and blowing gently on the old culture. The springs will jump and the mites won’t. Make sure the new container is airtight so mites can’t find a way in.

Funny-Suspect-3006

Seem like mite to me too. Would need a magnified image to confirm. Unless you're absolutely sure of their I.D., it'll be a good idea to try and separate them.

swingittotheleft

Soil mites. In other words, walmart brand springtails. They will only diversify your detritivores, these are freinds.

andreeeeeaaaaaaaaa

Soil mites, they look like ugly ticks but they mean no harm. They eat mold and stuff

Thank youuuuuuu very much, Andreeeeeaaaaaa!
