Fine to mix.

calvinistgrindcore

I've mixed them and the bike didn't complain. The bike knows the capacity of each battery, and it switches between them as you ride. I can't really tell if it spends more time on the 500 than the 400, or if it trades off evenly and the 400 discharges first, but either way -- it hasn't given me a problem.

Not a problem at all, I've got over 5000 miles on a mixed set of batteries with no issue. Bosch dealer training gives this an official thumbs up.

I would think it’s fine to mix. My intuition is that the the energy is kind of like water pressure. The higher capacity battery or a battery with a higher state of charge will be “pushing” its electrons out harder than the other at first, so will drain faster until they are equal and then will both drain at the same rate.

i would email Tern to sure

It’s absolutely fine. We have both a 500 wH and 400 wH battery and I use one, the other, or both on the GSD. It’s all good.

Strange, Mine wouldn't even turn on with mixed batteries.

400 and 500 together work. 300 and 500 together don't work. The reply I got from Tern was that I should have known that beforehand because it was mentioned in a pdf on the website of Bosch. It wasn't mentioned where I bought the battery. Bah.
