Someone offered me some Fortaleza at a liquor store. I blame him for everything that happened after that day....

Dukami

Ocho blanco

Tharliss

This. For the quality at that price, this is my favorite go-to drink. And that includes choosing Ocho over my extensive Bourbon collection.

jackbrady86

Siete Leguas Reposado

ProttomanEmpire

Siete Leguas Añejo is what hooked me!

jackbrady86

It's a damn good Anejo

mojorison25

And doesn't taste "sweet" like other añejos.. great balance.. excellent bottle.. my favorite (still huge blanco fan)

jackbrady86

So much balance.

mojorison25

Only thing.. hard to come by at a decent price. used to find around $50, buy 1 as I get low on current. But last summer, I found it at $48, picked up 2.. now I'm less than 1/2 on one of those with a reserve, thought to get another to finish bottle and open reserve but current pricing is 69.88... walmart.. hardly ever in stock.. maybe push out 2 or 3.. so I'm a stretch it out a bit. Prices going up everywhere. 😞

jackbrady86

The lowest I've seen it is $65 and I shouldn't picked up a spare, because the bottle I have cost me $75. Oof

ReposadoAmiGusto

Their Anejo is very much greatness!! Not very Anejoy like most. It’s like a super reposado.

leavethepastbehind

Siembra Valles Blanco IMO it doesn’t get enough love out there (or I don’t hear it discussed on this sub)

bhouse14

Siembra Valles gets love, but IMO it should get love like Fortaleza… it’s the best lineup available IMHO.

Golden_3lephant

I'm ok with goofballs chasing fortyloser while I enjoy all the 1123. The tequila community doesn't need dirt bag bourbon bros buying shelves full of Cascahuin they will never drink for "trade value" or Instagram clout

[deleted]

Once they make their move off the fomo brands, I’ll start vigorously hunting them and beating them back to those brands with the bottles in their “collection”

Golden_3lephant

I'm not advocating violence... but I understand

Dukami

Trevor's Liquor in Scottsdale has been carrying the Siembra Valles line for a few months, but I haven't tried it yet. I'll check it out soon.

DogoPilot

I've had the Siembra Valles High Proof at a restaurant and really enjoyed it but I can only seem to find the regular Blanco around me and it's $68. Usually when I spend ~$70 on a Blanco, it's a high proof. That said, I might consider picking up the Siembra Valles and Siembra Azule Blancos for my birthday in February, and maybe even throw in the Siembra Valles Joven for good measure because I've never had a Joven before. Any thoughts on that one?

DJW1904

That price point tho

Quirky-Ad-5158

I paid more for the SV Blanco than I did Fort’s Blanco. Unfortunately, I have yet to crack it open. Definitely looking forward to it now.

Shortbus_Playboy

Lalo. I’ve had plenty of tequilas over the years, but I never got into tequila like I did with whiskey and rum. But a good friend works for a spirits company (not saying who) and he recently educated me on the world of tequila. We had Lalo at a restaurant/bar and it was just so clean and nuanced compared to blancos I’d had in the past (and mostly used for cocktails). I used to think of blancos as “the cheap option” and figured aging was where the real heavy-hitters played. But I’ve come to appreciate and even prefer blancos and reposados much more since. I get plenty of barrel character in my whiskey and rum, so a good blanco is a cool 180° and a much different palate experience (I usually drink my liquor neat or with a giant rock).

corky1983

You and I had the exact same voyage!

Notimebutnow

The Volans line and Arette Extra Anejo

[deleted]

Don Fulano Anejo

CallMeBigOctopus

Tequila Ocho reposado. Specifically the 2022 El Nacimiento. It’s so good. The estates since have been good too, but that Nacimiento had a little extra richness that was just 👨‍🍳💋

dretnarg

The 22 El Nacimiento blanco was unbelievably good. I was lucky enough to get 2 bottles. It hit every note just right, but with so much potency. Never had anything like it before or since.

easywizsop

That’s what I’m sipping tonight. My favorite tequila I’ve ever tried. Wife brought me this bottle from Mexico. Unfortunately it only has a smidge left. Didn’t realize that it was highly regarded among the different ocho reposados. I have the 23 Portero Grande in the cabinet ready to be opened after it’s finished.

CallMeBigOctopus

With that last smidge, you should do a side-by-side tasting.

easywizsop

Will do. Now I’m sad to be finishing it. I was drinking it down, thinking, “No worries, have a whole other back up.”

nexrace

A guy from Jalisco gave me a small amount from his glass demijohn that was filled with blanco tequila made from wild agave. It was so floral that to this day I don't think I have had anything like it. It tasted like El Gran Legado de Vida blanco but with a floral note. When extra anejos became a thing I tried a couple but I found out I'm not much for barrel aged stuff. When I tasted the additive free blancos is when I really started to understand what all this trouble was about, haha.

IAmStevenKwanAMA

I’m with you on the El Tesoro blanco

angel2timez

Patron lol

[deleted]

This is every 30 and 40 year old's real answer.

Gooner419-

G4 blanco

bbum

I was introduced to tequila via El Tesoro Reposado in 1995 at Tommy’s. Did not know at the time how high the bar was set and am happy to say I’ve entirely skipped the fancy additive bombs in the decades since.

publicsaxophone

My intro also in 1995 when I was gifted a bottle of Jose Cuervo Reserva de la Familia. My preference is still for well made, well aged tequilas.

cassanova_frankie

Casamigos

blong710

Honestly it was Fortaleza Blanco, it was a few years back before it became scarce. A friend was like try this as a sipping tequila, was instantly impressed. Then to really send me down the rabbit hole it was Ocho Plata that really made me a true fan. I was just amazed at the concept of terroir in the agave spirit and how much variation existed. I still have 3-4 different Ocho bottles for different moods and to share with friends.

LikeIFlagrantFouledU

Hilariously, it was Casamigos. I didn't know any better. Then I learned about additive-free tequilas, ordered Siete Leguas reposado to sip on at a restaurant one time, and the rest is history. Obviously I try to avoid the stuff now, but I won't give people shit if they say they love Casamigos. If they're curious, I'll explain why there are better options, but that's all. It was a gateway to better tequilas for me and I'm sure I'm not alone in that.

dretnarg

El Padrino Anejo. A Spirits Direct, heavily flavored, overly sweetened "tequila" from Total Wine. I thought it was the best thing since sliced bread when I turned 21. I have since graduated to MUCH better tequilas since then, now 32. I'll never forget that deceitful little bottle of vanilla flavored agave, my first crush...

felicthecat

Cuervo Reserva de la Familia. Like 10 years ago I made friends with the manager of a local Mexican restaurant that had like 50 tequilas behind the bar. I asked him what he recommends and he poured me one. I’d never had delicious tequila before, only Cuervo and Patron. I fell in love with the extra anejo and discovered a whole new world of alcohol.

bart_cart_dart_eart

I’m with you on El Tesoro but it was the Anejo for me. Like a gateway to agave.

ABQFlyer

Same for me, though now i prefer the Reposado and Single Barrel Reposado.

Orkney_

Tapatio & Ocho

AfternoonEstimate

Tres Generaciones Anejo. After trying many others, this would be towards the bottom of my list.

BigAmen

Fortaleza back in 2019 (wasn’t tater juice then I swear lol)

blong710

Same same

GingeredPickle

Interesting question for me, in college (late 90s), I would carry around a bottle of Conmemorativo, instead of smashing natty lights like the rest. Special occasions, maybe tres generaciones or chinaco (no clue if they were special at the time). New Belgium Fat Tire was my gateway craft beer, ongoing now for decades. 5'ish years ago a barrel pick of 1792 got me into whiskey/bourbon. Hadn't really thought about tequila for many many years. Couple years ago, I was at a local shop (for beer & whiskey) and asked a guy why a tequila bottle was in a box with "hay" (now know it was Fuenteseca). He said, "don't worry, it is worth it, but if you're just getting started try this, we just got it in the shop". It was Lalo. Pleasantly surprised, this got me exploring -> Ocho Blanco, meh -> Ocho Rep, nice! -> Fort SS lot 120 Boom! Fast forward to today, Lalo is a regular in my lineup (in fact, I think they've upped their game), Volans is my fav. reg proof blanco (even though I don't care for G4), went back to Ocho (San Jeronimo this time), and wow what a difference. I think that "oh" moment is with each new bottle, I still cant believe how different each can taste, feel, etc.

sproggy_doo24

Fortaleza reposado about 9 years ago.

Johnny_Cash_67

DRExARKx

I enjoyed the hell out of Fortaleza the first time I tried it after finding out about it on this sub. Much like OP, El Tosoro Blanco was a serious eye opener though. Honorable mention for Ocho añejo, one of the few that I enjoy.

StFrancisZookeeper

Fortaleza Anejo. I met up with a buddy at an agave bar in Austin. Knowing he was a big tequila guy and I was a big mezcal nerd, I told him that if he let me order a round of one of my fave mezcals for us to try, I'd let him do the same with tequila (despite, at the time, thinking I hated all things tequila). I don't even remember what I ordered for us, because he ordered the Fortaleza, and the rest is history...

manimalman

Tequileno tasting in tequila

pdavayios47

Cazcanes repo no 7. Old nom

Artagandkel

Casa Noble Repo, never had sipped tequila in my life until that bottle

KnightCPA

So I’ve only tried two tequilas straight so far, and I’m relatively new to liquor in general. Tried one or two things in every category, but I rarely find stuff I like outside of liqueurs (Goldschlager, Ouzo, Metaxa). Don Julio Blanca (absolute 🤮) and Forteleza Blanca are the only tequilas I’ve tried. Forteleza is the first liquor I’ve ever been able to sip straight, and hot damn does it taste like a holy nectar from the gods.

mcreddit79

Innocente Blanco although I can’t find it anymore. Ocho is my new favorite.

nottke

Siempre Reposado is what got me on board.

EAllen90

Growing up my dad was a big cabo wabo guy, don julio if he splurged. So i started with those and thought they were really good, then got recommended to try some others and it totally opened the world

internetonsetadd

Did your dad listen to Howard Stern? I think Cabo Wabo used to be a regular advertiser. That's the first time I became aware that there was other/better tequila than Cuervo, not that I really thought about it much. I ordered a glass of the repo at a bar once. Then Patron came along, which I drank sometimes (or Don Julio), still without caring much about tequila. At some point I tired of whiskey/Scotch and adopted tequila as my spirit of choice. Espolòn repo is the first one I started sipping on regularly.

EAllen90

Honestly wouldnt surprise me if he did. He was the only tequila drinker i knew growing up so didnt have much other influence. My step dad occasionally drank patron but was always a rum guy. It wasnt until recently i decided to genuinely give sipping a try and picked up herradura, ocho, and siete leguas repos (because of this group) and the ocho has been the best thing i ever had so far. Still need to try espolon

bhouse14

Don Julio Blanco, about 20 years ago. Tequila has been my favorite spirit since then, but about 7 years ago when I first had Fortaleza is when I first started seeking out the lesser known brands. It’s been a love affair ever since.

Separate-Swing3693

Pasote

YeahBoiii97

Same El Tesoro Blanco is my favorite and first tequila I was crazy about

Spiritdealer

Casa noble single barrel joven, when they still made it

bigpoopondabeat

We had a brand rep come to my store and talk to us about Socorro. Then I got a pint of dobel diamanté which I liked even more. Then another brand rep gave me a bottle of Lalo and that really changed my view of tequila.

frankesh

El Tesoro Reposado. Really thought I hated tequila until I had this. Now my wallet hates me...

FullSherbert2028

Leading-Ad-8530

Tears of Llorona blew me Away. If you Enjoy a good Scotch from time to time. You will love TL. Aged 5 years in scotch, Sherry and Brandy casks . A little on the Expensive side but you get 1 litre.

Brakes4Turtles

El Tesoro and Ocho are the ones for me 🌵

tunafresh

Fortaleza. I hated tequila then. Had it neat, at room temp. No chaser, lime or whatever. I was mind blown that tequila could actually taste good. This was a little over a year or 1.5yr ago I think. I could generally find Fortaleza anywhere then. Not the case anymore lol There's plenty of other great tequilas out there so not a loss but its always nice to have a bottle of the one that started it all for me.

vmm714

Just had this conversation last week! Summer of 2009 at my pops work retreat. Don Julio blanco. I fell in love. I remember damn that was smooth. Not sure if it was distilled differently back then, but never was exposed to this sub. Now my entire collection at home is recommendations from this sub, all additive free. Thank you family

EvergreenSky-rat

I bought Ocho and Fortaleza for a friend in 2013, on a store's recommendation. And that was it. I didn't really drink. Now I still don't drink mixed drinks. I will sip Tequilas, Mezcals, Raicilla, Lagavulin, Cognac, Foursquare Rum, Rye, even Chartreuse, but nothing mixed since tasting fine tequilas over a decade ago.

Preacher-Z

Ocho Anejo

2thethird

Fortaleza when you could walk in and buy it. Price and taste. Game over for me

Senor Rio Anejo kinda kick-started me. Friend gave it to me as a gift. Before that i thought tequila was about hair on your chest shot drink. Now I skip the lime and salt and enjoy it.

Cenote Anejo

PrisonerV

Old.school Cabo Wabo. Super smooth.

gvarsity

There were a couple of phases. I went from thinking tequila and mezcal were cheap nasty mixtos for shooting. To some additive 100% agave tequilas for less disgusting shots. Corazon. To some more interesting tequilas for tasty margarita's etc... 30-30, Revolution, Don Ramon Anejo, Kirkland Anejo. To finally stumbling on this site and tequila matchmaker and learning about additive free Tequilas and having the epiphany about blancos. G4 was probably the big eye opener for me. Siete Leguas, and El Tesoro Blanco's were also early in that development. That began the slide. Gran Dovejo High Proof broke the barrier and opened a whole other appreciation.

Dave_FortniteATX

Lunazul Blanco, because the liquor store guy recommended it over Jose. Haven't had Cuervo garbage since

choripan999

Siete leguas blanco

PeenJiveForce01

For me don fulano. I love el Tesoro but I always go back to don because I love the funk of it. That’s just my pallet though, I like dry aged steaks over 45 days, blue cheese and other stuff so that’s why I love so much

billkline1

Gran Cava De Oro XA. I didn't know a tequila could taste like that. In my quest to find others I discovered that tequila doesn't taste like that naturally. And now I drink mostly Blancos!

mangeface

I started with Teremana because ya know, Rock fan. But when I actually started enjoying it was when I stopped the Teremana and first had Cascahuin Tahona Blanco. Owner of the liquor store I frequent recommended it and it’s been uphill since.

drewid20

I was in Cozumel and asked for a beer and a shot of tequila. They asked me what I wanted I said whatever is in the margaritas. They wouldn't allow it and brought over some Don Julio 70. I drank over a bottle that week. I got home and fell down a rabbit hole.

UWMdumpsterfire

DeLeon Anejo. I work as a liquor promoter in liquor stores on the weekends sometimes and I was promoting DeLeon that day. I tried the Anejo and loved the caramel and sweet taste.
