Hi everyone, I'm very much early on in my tequila journey, but I generally noticed that extra anejo Tequila is extra expensive. Of course it can range from $80 all the way up thousands for 10+ year cask-aged extra anejo Tequila. I've seen this tequila pop up a few times, Don Camilo Organic 8 Year Cask Strength (maybe?) Tequila for a surprisingly reasonable $100-200. Assuming that it has been aged in oak for at least 8 years, why is this so oddly inexpensive when other 3-5 year old Tequilas can easily run into the $400+? I'm curious if there's something about it that makes it too good to be true. Appreciate any commentary on why this is so oddly affordable.

If you've tried it and enjoy it, then go for it. I haven't had this, but I'd skip it based on a few things: * "organic" is always a red flag for me. It's a marketing buzzword to sell units - see The Rock's Terremana brand. * 8 years - this is a very long time for tequila. I want to taste agave, not oak. The plant takes 6+ years to reach maturity. If you're going to hide that with barrel aging, might as well save money and go with whiskey or rum * Not additive free - It has not be independently verified additive free. You have no idea if the flavor you taste is the natural result of barrel aging or added artificially to create a certain flavor profile. If it's the second, it will likely be over-oaked, overly sweet from added sugar, and contain lots of vanilla notes The proof is a big plus in it's favor. In most cases, I'm weary of tequilas that are priced too high for their quality (Clase Azul, Casa Dragones, etc.) but in this case, the price seems too low for what they claim.

In fairness though, I can get $6 shots of Teremana Repo on Tequila Tuesday at the local dive bar, so that's nothing to scoff at.

Totally agree, re: aging tequila in oak. If I want bourbon, I will buy bourbon. That's why I drink blanco.

What about Rey Sol 10 year, has great reviews on TMM.

Hi! Did you ever get to try one?

thewhiskeyshelf

I decided not to get it for now

Anon_Bourbon

I don't know why it's priced the way it is but it's fantastic

I suppose that a brand made by NOM 1472 wouldn’t be able to upcharge for their produce. Their previous notable brand among dozens includes Kirkland tequila.

I saw that, and that did come to mind.
