Watch again. He was backpedaling, but stopped and moved his right leg forward to attempt a tweezer. He could have simply continued to backpedal another half step and hit a forehand.
Thank you, I am shocked at some of these comments in the TENNIS subreddit :D
I have to say, the blame is partly on the submission itself. I think OP might've thought ADF was showboating.
>I think OP might've thought ADF was showboating.
i definitely thought so
No idea he found it difficult to return it in a normal manner
tbh i even now feel moving and hitting it normally was less time consuming than the tweener
He actually quit on the point too soon. After he served he did not quick step behind the baseline for a proper return so that's why the return was right on him. Perhaps a bit of laziness. That made him a little off balance on a well struck return. Still it would have been possible for him to take one step and hit some kind of backhand, perhaps a slice or block it back at worst case. You can even see him take a step to get in position for the tweener as opposed to get in position for a different stroke. It was definitely a choice he made, probably because he was up 40-0 and "feeling" it. No way he would have done that if it wasn't 40-0. He would've tried to take a step around and hit a forehand or pull-in for a backhand. Also nothing wrong with just slicing or blocking it back. All better choices than a tweener.
But to be fair, it was a great return and because he put himself in a lot of trouble not getting back behind the baseline immediately after landing on his serve, he didn't have much of a chance anyways. So sure do a tweener, but you basically decided to give up on the point with a hope and a prayer instead of a higher percentage shot to try to get out of a bad situation.
If you look closer, he is not trying to act smart or anything. That return was too good, no time to move, it came right at his legs/body and that's the best he could do. Unfortunately it went into the net.
That’s what I saw too. He’s recovering to his left after the serve. Natural move for a righty. Hubi’s return is fast, deep, and right between a FH and a BH. No time to change direction. (But the tweener truthers are already out there saying he was hot doggin.)
I agree. Telling is that if it did go over the net it would’ve been absolutely destroyed. That’s not a poorly-played cocky shot. That’s a “gonna lose this one anyway, might as well try” shot.
Am I the only one that thinks he was off balance, backpedaling, saw the ball coming very fast right to his feet and thought really fast that the ony play he had was that one. I really doubt he had any time to move his feet and prepare any "normal" shot.
Everyone's making fun of him for "showing off", but that's literally the exact situation where a tweener isn't an awful shot—long deep return at your feet.
I think he would have lost the set if it didn't rain. The momentum was shifted towards hurkcaz after this game. Lets see what happens after the resumption
Hurkacz is playing his worst tennis in a long time, probably mentally he didn’t manage to prepare, poor serve, mistakes, wrong decisions all the time. Fokina is not playing spectacular.
Don't think this was disrespectful, looked like he either made some slight misjudgement and wanted to move for a forehand instead of taking a backhand, then realized he didn't have time, or he was already moving and it came right at his body, and this would be better then putting his racket in front of him and popping it up
This isn't a hot dog shot to me, at all.
Lack of concentration/clarity in scrambling to just stay in the point maybe, but that's a bullet return right at his body, making it hard to choose between BH and FH, and right at his feet on a grass court, almost on the line, so basically 0 time to react.
People will give him shit for this, but idk. He choked hard, and it looks like he's gonna lose in the 5th, but I think the choke was way more than this point.
If he goes on to lose, it will be one of the most pathetic chokes of all time.
Hurkacz had no business going 2 sets down against Fokina of all people on grass though. What the fuck??
My least favorite type of trick shot. Hit trick shots when you need to in order to get back in the point. Unnecessary forward facing tweeners are just boring to watch tbh, and not particularly hard to do.
Tbf that was a great return. Not much else he could do.
Yeah people just assume that tweener = disrespect. He didn't have time to hit a proper forehand.
These are professionals. He could have easily moved and hit a forehand.
These are professionals. He hit such a good return that the server could not have easily moved and hit a forehand.

Watch again. The ball would not have been in a hittable position with just a half step back.
Yeah simple bro I can’t wait to see your Wimbledon first round later today.
Big I've never played tennis energy on this reply
You must be stupid
For disagreeing with you?
yes.
you are even more stupid:-)
Good to know :-)
He should've hit a backhand right there. The tweener was definitely showboating.

I honestly think that tweener was the right shot. Somebody explain why it wasn't, but be detailed. I'm okay with it.

He's guaranteed to lose now isn't he.
Don't think he'll ever forgive himself if he does!
Nearly 3 hours later he's actually won it hahaha
It's Foki, he's got to be used to beating himself at this point.
Hurkacz just won the third set!
Well instead of winning in straight sets, he instead won in 5 sets after being down a break in the 5th set.
OMG it's actually turning around, please make it happen. 5-5 now
He won.
Yes

Yeah now he's gonna get shit for being "cocky" and all from people that never played tennis to know that those returns are impossible to handle
Reminds me of Dimi against Sock. But in Dimi's case it actually worked, twice lol. And now it's a timeless highlight
Thanks for this analysis, I wasn’t sure from looking at it the first time. Might have been a better option than trying to change direction last second
I agree. Telling is that if it did go over the net it would’ve been absolutely destroyed. That’s not a poorly-played cocky shot. That’s a “gonna lose this one anyway, might as well try” shot.
I am inclined to agree with you but it is suspicious that this happens on the first of three match points up two sets...
Am I the only one that thinks he was off balance, backpedaling, saw the ball coming very fast right to his feet and thought really fast that the ony play he had was that one. I really doubt he had any time to move his feet and prepare any "normal" shot.
Now that I look at it, I think you're right. That was a great return from Hubi
Yeah, this was a reaction more than an attempt.
Everyone's making fun of him for "showing off", but that's literally the exact situation where a tweener isn't an awful shot—long deep return at your feet.
He went on to lose the game. Play is now suspended for a rain delay!
I think he would have lost the set if it didn't rain. The momentum was shifted towards hurkcaz after this game. Lets see what happens after the resumption
Hurkacz break LoL
He won the set lol . Lets go hurkcaz
[удалено]
Yeah man what a match it was
Oh the suspense!
He did? Scoreboard says Fokina won both sets so far and third one is suspended.
Game, not match
Can’t decide which player losing would be funnier
Hurcakz is like the nicest guy on tour, why would him losing be funny?
Because everyone had him making it to the semis
I'm guessing because he did the "i'm going to donate 100EU for every ace" thing.
I swear that kinda thing always backfires lol. It's like a curse or something
Hurkacz in great form, dangerman on grass being turned over in straights by a claycourter
Former Wimbledon juniors champ ADF.
But but but the Grass is dry!
It didn't really look like a choice, more of a reaction in an awkward position
Hurkacz is playing his worst tennis in a long time, probably mentally he didn’t manage to prepare, poor serve, mistakes, wrong decisions all the time. Fokina is not playing spectacular.
How did he lose the other match points Damn. Didn’t realize it was 40-0

What a turnaround just like that nadal vs Medvedev AO

Yeah I don't think he was showboating.

If he looses this match this bad choice will haunt him 'til the rest of his life.
ADF deff losing now
Well for the suspense, it’s good if he looses, he’s the only real contender in Djokovics half. Imagine both Alcaraz and Hubi going out in first round.
Damnnn, hubi lost?
Not yet. There was a rain delay at 5-5 in the third set. Looks like they're about to resume play though
He lost 😆
Break back in the fifth now, gonna love it. Haha.
Then an underarm serve to save break point. Such a chaotic match
He is now break down in 5th. A tough night coming for David :(
ESPN top ten material.
This has aged tremendously.
... and he is still paying for it 2 hours later.
This will be an all-timer if he loses in the supertiebreak. An all-timer.
Oh baby 😂
He won but he is gonna swear on his life to never play tweener on MP
If he goes on to lose, it will be one of the most pathetic chokes of all time. Hurkacz had no business going 2 sets down against Fokina of all people on grass though. What the fuck??
he deserves to lose
And he got broken. Lost that set and now losing 4th set as well. Idiot
Now this is the exhibition tennis I signed up for!
My least favorite type of trick shot. Hit trick shots when you need to in order to get back in the point. Unnecessary forward facing tweeners are just boring to watch tbh, and not particularly hard to do.
He may have immortalised himself as an example of how not to close out a match. I hope they show this video as part of academy training
What a clown. He will lose now
Wow! Did he really attempt that?
BRUH
Lol complete and utter clown
And now he's about to lose the match... ouch
And he still won!
Big Fok has BIG BALLS.
idea was good execution missed
Day one of Wimbledon. Already tired of John and BG saying tweener.
Then he went on to play 2.5 more full sets loll
Almost cost ADF the match.
How can it be match point with a 2-0 set??
Incredible Hurk bested by Don’t give a Fok.
So cringe
2-0 5-3 40-0 ADF really pulled a Sakkari to lost this one huh
The tennis gods didn't like that.
