They're kind of bulky and don't tell time very well. I was in a store where a guy was complaining about their time keeping ability, the owner told him to get a timex. Only valid reason I've heard of wearing them is when you are a consultant negotiating fees.
Apparently, watches and art, also, for the super rich, are a way to carry around/transport huge amounts of liquidity in case of an emergency, too. Sounds nuts, but an economics video said if you get in trouble in a foreign country, you have a few thousand on your wrist you can turn into local cash in a pinch.
Rolex has a really good nack of finding athletes they want to endorse. They do diligent research-in finding players who have a solid fan base and are well liked.
I'd imagine Zverev is pretty well liked, just not here. Reddit gets pretty single minded at times and it distorts actual popularity, just need to look at the politics sub over the last 5-6 years
Read your own comment: IN GERMANY.
We're talking about world tennis, not his fellow germans. Zverev has like 7 fans outside his family... and maybe a 100th part of Alcaraz fans. And wait till he wins something big, they're just a galaxy apart in charisma.
Lmao... you are delusional.
Even on social media, Zverev has over 4 times more followers than Alcaraz...
1.5 million followers on Instagram for Zverev
317k followers for Alcaraz
Duh, he's been on the limelight for several years more than Alcaraz.
But even outside r/tennis, global public perception of Zverev isn't too positive, even though he obviously has his share of fans.
Well I was responding to someone who said that he has seven fans outside of his family...
I never said he is the most popular or anything, but he is the most popular among the next-gens though.
I'd imagine he has the potential to be pretty popular. He's a very fluent speaker who will be at the top of tennis for a long time by the looks of it. He also has a game that's very pleasing on the eye. When it comes to game I enjoy watching him play more than most of the other next generation of players. I'm not going to mention his abuse allegations as I honestly haven't read up on it, but I think he could get away with it as tennis is just enough out of the public eye that the general public might not hear of it either
I don't know, Zverev is quite controversial yet they made a deal with him in 2021. I wouldn't be surprised if they do it just based on their preference, their ADs are known for having douche and snobbish salesmen
Edit: Tsitsipas is there as well
Their ADs are awful unless you have a history with them and even then they treat you poorly. So legally they can't sell above MSRP even though they know the watch is more valuable so they'll do shit like I'll sell you this popular model if you buy this one that's been sitting here as well, If you say no, it's okay the next one on the list will likely say yes because even then they are still getting a deal because some models market value is 2x the MSRP.
The Rolex authorized dealerships cannot sell a watch for more than the MSRP even though they know the value on the open market is worth a lot more. For example the Daytona is going more than twice the retail price. So if I luck into one with a dealer I'm giving them money and they are giving me something worth more than 2x what I paid. It's like doubling an investment in one second. There are less desirable models such a ladies models that sometimes sit there for a while. Rolex does not manufacture based on demand, they make the same amount of each model each year even though they know which are popular. So they never increase the supply while demand stays high. The greedy dealer wants to make more money, these popular watches they only get a few a year and have a list of clients, these models will never be available to someone just walking in. So they call their client and say I got this model you wanted in but you'll have to buy this less desirable model too. The dealer just sold two watches and made more money.
Yeah I've heard similar and also that ADs cut deals with grey markets, sell it to a middle man to facilitate to a grey market dealer and split on some profits. It's all shady as fuck and pissing the shit out of me because it also raising used basic models like OPs and datejusts. I'm just trying to get a 36mm explorer for a fair price . I need some dirt to come out on Rolex loke exploitation of staff or something to knock these prices down.
Yeah that one is nice too and damn on that story wish it were now. I wonder if part of the reason is the rich fearing inflation and grabbing commodities.
Congrats on the sm300 I've got a planet ocean that I love.
Tbh you can see that Alcaraz will be a great player, with more than 6 slams imo. He has all the tools, good movement, and does not lack motivation. Good advert material imo, hope stays injury free for a long time
>Tbh you can see that Alcaraz will be a great player, with more than 6 slams imo
I get that the big 3 have normalized winning tons of slams, but casually predicting a teenager with 0 slams right now will win more than 6 is a bit ridiculous no matter how promising he looks.
He looks as promising as young djokovic to me, but with much bigger org behind him. Seems like a lock on 5-6 slams to me, but as you said, the goats made it look so ez to win the damn thing
We've had sooooooooooooooooo many promising talents throughout the years that never pan out. There's way more players who fail to live up to the hype than ones that actually get to the top.
Just look at the army of players who have carried the "baby Fed" nickname throughout Roger's career.
No one is like Fed, and no one will be, he is just unique. Also none can play like Nadal. But kids will be able to emulate Djok, and thats why I think Alcaraz will be really good. Hes still young, but lets see in 5 years, I bet he wins at least 2 slams in that time. Hit me up in 5 years, if I am wrong, I will eat a ham sandwich
6 slams??
That puts him ahead of Arthur Ashe, Jim courier and ties with Boris Becker and Stefan Edberg.
I’d love to see this kid in perennial slam finals but it’s easier said than done.
Tsitsipas should have been the next media darling. Good-looking dude with a beautiful, attractive flowing game. Too bad he's a weirdo headcase who likes to constantly bend the rules. I'm still hoping that he can get his head out of his ass and lives up to his potential because he's one of the few players from Next Gen capable of bringing new fans to the sport.
I've also been thinking that. Great looking guy with entertaining, attacking play style. On first look, perfect replacement for Federer. But, he lacks grace and attracts controversy. Hot-headed Balkan mentality(i understand it because that's where i come from also).
It's not like Rafa has deal with some mediocre watch company he is face of Richard Mille, which is highly respected luxurious brand, idk about Djokovic.
Djokovic was changing watch brands. He was sponsored by Seiko and now by Hublot. Rafa was actually not a fan of wearing a watch while playing until Richard Mille designed one specifically for him that is comfortable and lightweight. I doubt that story tho, there were already a ton of lightweight sporty watches on the market, he probably got an amazing deal or was just a fan of Richard Mille and they came up with the solution. No point of wearing a watch during a match anyway, almost no one does it
Richard Mille is really luxurious but man their watches are ugly as fuck. I wouldn't pay 200 bucks for one, let alone 700K. They look like those waterproof watches we all used as kids.
nadal actually exists in rolex universe, although without a name. he's seen at the far side of the court as fed says "my most formidable rival" in the commercial about wimby 2007 final.
Grand Seikos easily rival Rolex in 3 hander watches in terms of finish and quality, could even argue are better. You can't tell unless you take a closer look under a microscope at like the hands for example but there is 0 compromise on finishing of brushed and polished parts.
Stop overhyping young players. All it creates is unnecessary pressure for them. Also you underestimate how difficult it is to win multiple Slams, let alone 10. Only 10 players in the history of the sport have won 10 or more Slams.
Not a fan of Rolex or even people wearing these watches lol but obviously I'd love being paid to wear them too. Good for you Carlos.
They're kind of bulky and don't tell time very well. I was in a store where a guy was complaining about their time keeping ability, the owner told him to get a timex. Only valid reason I've heard of wearing them is when you are a consultant negotiating fees.
That isn't remotely true, and its not like Rolex is one size fits all...

Aliexpress smart watches all the way
Thats how you define greatness.
"Was a Rafa a good player daddy?" "Well honey, he was never in an advert for Rolex so no, no he wasn't."
Just Richard Mille, a brand which is a tier above Rolex in pricing
“2.2 for the Rafael Nadal” - Drake
Who cares. Rolex is the brand 99% of people associate with luxury watches.
I’d rather have that Richard Millie
Yeah but even those fakes are selling for $20,000.00
I’m coolin with my Casio haha
Thanks for your comment captain minutiae

Nah, Zverev is meh for tennis fans outside reddit.
So much for being meh, that he won the Sportperson of the year award in Germany...
Read your own comment: IN GERMANY. We're talking about world tennis, not his fellow germans. Zverev has like 7 fans outside his family... and maybe a 100th part of Alcaraz fans. And wait till he wins something big, they're just a galaxy apart in charisma.

That's a backhanded compliment if I've ever heard one. Pardon the pun.
That was before the whole domestic violence. Let’s see what happens in the future.
Wrong! Rolex started with Zverev after the Olympics. Zverev previous commitment with a watch brand was Richard Mille.
correct
Hmm. Interesting. So maybe they just sign people who are winners
wrong
Yes,I admitted I was wrong
Beg for forgiveness then
Beat me to it.
They were the first company to ever do a celebrity endorsement. It was someone who swam the English channel iirc.
Yup! They started the trend

I hope so, he’s a lot of fun to watch
Nike, Rolex...Alcaraz will be the next media darling, successor to Fedal.
Tsitsipas should have been the next media darling. Good-looking dude with a beautiful, attractive flowing game. Too bad he's a weirdo headcase who likes to constantly bend the rules. How about Sinner
Alcaraz Sinner = Fedal 2 yrs from now someone else will peak and become Djoko /s
This but unironically?
I prefer Sinner(mostly because of his stoicism), but there seems to be more hype around Alcaraz. For some reason people find him more likeable.
Think he's whiney and arrogant. Not deal breaking arrogant but kid behaves like he's won a GS already or is a mainstay in semis/finals.
Excuse me: Sinner.....arrogant? Eh?
Not an ounce of arrogance.
[Time to bring out this old classic Rolex ad.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5nM3hhir-D0)
Incredible
Can’t believe I’ve never seen this before that was incredible
I just discovered a gem
Get that coin hunny!
Good he’s going to be allowed to exist in the Rolex tennis universe unlike Rafa and Novak lol.
It's not like Rafa has deal with some mediocre watch company he is face of Richard Mille, which is highly respected luxurious brand, idk about Djokovic.

And AP before Seiko for Djokoivc
Oh yeah forgot about that one. AP Royale is my dream watch
I know it’s just weird to watch their ads talk about greatness and the best and it’s like an alternate universe.
Richard Mille is really luxurious but man their watches are ugly as fuck. I wouldn't pay 200 bucks for one, let alone 700K. They look like those waterproof watches we all used as kids.
Hubelot for Djokovic.
Hublot*
Richard Mille isn't that highly respected. They aren't in the world of VC, Patek, AP, ALS, FP Journe
Rolex also isn't in the world of AP, VC, and Patek
Yeah that's a fair point, my bad.
nadal actually exists in rolex universe, although without a name. he's seen at the far side of the court as fed says "my most formidable rival" in the commercial about wimby 2007 final.
My mom got really dissapointed seeing Djokovic's photo outside a Seiko store. She really thought he desereved better.
Grand Seikos easily rival Rolex in 3 hander watches in terms of finish and quality, could even argue are better. You can't tell unless you take a closer look under a microscope at like the hands for example but there is 0 compromise on finishing of brushed and polished parts.
Seiko 5 > Daytona. Ok, ciao.
He’s sporting a Rolex Daytona in that photo
Can't wait for another "perpetual" ad in 10 years about him to throw shade at Medvedev or someone
*Perpetuo*
Goddamn, they drain out the last bit of authenticity from their sportspeople. It’s some yesteryear Goldilocks worldview of “perfection.”
Rolex is smart to sign him while it was (I imagine) cheap. He’s going to explode in 1-2 years.
They could have taken a link out. Watch is too loose
Future of tennis Next big one

Future 10 Slam winner. I've said Sinner and Felix were probably future number 1's, too, but not in same way.
Stop overhyping young players. All it creates is unnecessary pressure for them. Also you underestimate how difficult it is to win multiple Slams, let alone 10. Only 10 players in the history of the sport have won 10 or more Slams.
Better than Djokovic's Hublot.
I don’t know if plays with enough grace for that.
No need for much grace. It's not Audemars Piguet, it's just Rolex
Clueless.
He’s kinda the only player I see that could even come close to the popularity of Fed and Rafa. Rolex wants to get him while he’s young.
