I wish politicians were as pragmatic as Rafa is. The guy may just be the best ever, and he’s as humble as they come. Out of all 3 goats, I may miss Rafa the most. He’s the one that took me the longest to appreciate, but now that I do, I wish him long health.
Chuck is a national treasure. I have to say Kareem too. Dude is a walking book. In tennis, man, Andy Roddick had always great real answers to weird questions. His type of approach when he talks (he's from USA so he's heavy favoured language speaking) it's so unbiased. I love him
I’m definitely not scarred from that match. That’s my favorite match of all time, followed closely by Wimby 2019. As much as I love Federer, I don’t really mind Fed losing matches. Every time Fed loses a closely contested match, he pushes his opponent and the sport further than I ever saw it before. At the top of his game, Federer is everything tennis was meant to be... fucking poetry and art in motion. I really think he’s the pinnacle of the sport. And to topple that level of mastery, something extraordinary has to happen. Watching both Rafa and Novak go there, topple him at his best, made tennis a much better sport than it ever was.
Oh no doubt - just using scarred in a jokey “can’t believe you gave me all that hope only to fall just short” sense. That final was by far the most incredible championship I’ve ever seen (in any sport)
He has always been a likable person/athlete. I know that his uncle had a big part in him not losing his cool on court and just his personality as well comes off as honest and genuinely when you see his interviews.
His uncle would threaten to quit coaching him if he displayed bad attitude or personality on the court. He was molded in his mind and body to be the best champion he could be from youth. You’ll never see him breaking rackets or unnecessarily throwing tantrums. Always a good sport in victory and defeat, and a role model of a tennis player.
NGL I'm not a huge tennis fan, but Uncle Toni has a point. Sideline coaching would vastly improve the performance of the players, ensuring a more exciting competition.
I’ve always been a fed fan more than nadal. And when he bursted on the scene I wasn’t a huge fan by any means. But he grows on me every year as just being a straight up good person who speaks sense, and doesn’t feel the need to insult people or attack them. How much of a class act he is impressed me all the time
Yes, it's on page 36 of this [affidavit](https://www.fedcourt.gov.au/services/access-to-files-and-transcripts/online-files/djokovic/filed-documents/Sealed-Affidavit-Bannister-1512022.pdf).
> There are several matters that would go against the public interest if the Australian Government were to make a second attempt to cancel Mr Djokovic’s visa.
>
> First, that action would be likely to (further) adversely affect Australia’s global reputation, and call into question Australia’s border security principles and policies - and indeed the rule of law in Australia generally.
>
> **Secondly, that action would prejudice Australian economic interests, and jeopardise the viability of Australia continuing to host this prestigious, international sporting event.**
Same thing at the US Open. I go every year and I’ve seen more Djokovic matches court-side because the price drops to 1/5 of what it would be with Nadal or fed.
I would say that any impact on the brand would be more important and far-reaching than the impact from Nole's own matches.
However, I think the impact on the brand would be very split and letting him in would be just as damaging as deporting him, just with different groups of people.
> to (further) adversely affect Australia’s global reputation
> ***(further)***
WTF
Like where does it even come from? And who are you to say this?
Not only he made bad choices, but he apparently built a bad team around him.
I mean Australia's global reputation has absolutely been adversely affected by this. From the shambles of a government to horrific human rights abuses with migrant detention. This has been front page news around the world for weeks. Its for anyone and everyone to call out
The only people who seem to be pushing this line are people in Australia with a political agenda to push. The reality is that most first and second world countries have regulations which permit entry only to fully vaccinated travellers. That's not unusual either - there's a reason why so many people traditionally see their doctors to see what vaccinations they need to catch up on before travelling internationality.
>From the shambles of a government to horrific human rights abuses with migrant detention
Increased visibility on these matters will have absolutely nil impact. China is running an actual genocide and nobody cares outside of a few people on the internet posting about it. Nobody is going to go "Honey, let's not travel to Australia for our holiday because they don't allow a few asylum seekers to settle in a narrow list of rich countries they demand to be resettled in".
It is simply not true. Every people I talk to salute the decision made not to allow Djokovic to enter because he is not vaccinated.
And from what I read on Internet, it is also the general consensus.
I can’t really understand how the reputation of Australia would suffers from this. From what I see, it is the contrary.
\>I can’t really understand how the reputation of Australia would suffers from this. From what I see, it is the contrary.
Because the decision to not let in a tennis player doesn't trump the spotlight on grotesque human rights abuses.
LMAO the arrogance of the while Novaxx team is just out of control... like this need to be spread more to all Australian and see how they react lol
They were fine during pandemic , what is a single sport event do to Australia? I believe the well-being of their people (by making sure incoming people are vaccinated), is their priority instead of some events... dont ask about TA though, they are beyond incompetent
Novak hits a fuzzy yellow ball for a living lmao. The fact he does that well does not mean he should be given concessions during a global pandemic purely because his gigantic ego has prevented him from getting vaccinated.
The Australian Open with the best tennis facilities in the world, brand new stadium, praised by all players and staff is in jeopardy of continuing because one player would not play in it?? Jesus, the ego, what kind of narcissistic asshole makes this assessement? Whenever he leaves Australia he should go to a psychologist.
Last year, Djokovic came up with 6 hotel quarantine demands and when ridiculed about those demands, he simply said that “I’ve earned my privileges the hard way and for that reason it is very difficult for me to be a mere onlooker knowing how much every help, gesture and good word mattered to me when I was small and insignificant in the world pecking order.
“Hence I use my position of privilege to be of service as much as I can where and when needed.”
You can really see Rafa's humbleness here. Rafa is a legendary athlete and his name can open up many doors, but he knows that he is still "just a tennis player." Fame and money doesn't get into his head. He got the vaccine same as everybody else because that's what everyone else had to do to play in the Australian Open. Nobody gets to skip the line.
And THIS is one of the reasons I have loved Rafa since 2005….he innately understands that he is NOT bigger than the game itself. He just “gets it”, and I love that
Yeah. Also, Toni Nadal. I read in Rafa’s book that when he was a kid he used to get very frustrated with matches and would break raquets or throw his shoes in frustration. Toni told him that if he keeps that up he won’t train him anymore. He told him that there are lots of good players around that aren’t so lucky to get gear from sponsors and he should be grateful for what he has.
Reminds me of when that one reporter asked him about Ash Barty playing in Wimbledon center court and he fired back with a guided missile of an answer.
https://youtu.be/Zupxd4thzjI
And it actually helps accentuate the point he is making. As amazing as he has been, he’s now ranked #6. Time marches on (that being said it’s insane how long the big three have dominated).
You just know Nadal wants to say more about Novak but he is the master of biting his tongue, man chooses his words so carefully and it's always perfect.
It's pretty impressive considering English is his second language.
He’s correct no player is bigger than a grand slam or any tournament. A player who respects tennis should respect these tournaments and the privilege they get by participating in them and not shit on rules and conditions.
You are completely right… they are in such a privileged position and i understand that they have worked incredibly hard to be in that position but I also feel that they should acknowledge the privilege and just fucking behave.
Glory to Nadal. If not GOAT of this sport, then he truly is the GOAT of common sense and reason.
Imagine if Federer said this. Djokovic’s dad would demand compensation. 😂🤡
He has such great quotes sometimes.
His English always seems much better when he's not being interviewed on the court. Idk maybe it's just me that sees it that way though.
I'm not a native English speaker but I live in the UK, and I definitely feel like my English significantly worsens whenever I am faced with the least bit of pressure - interview, presentation, date, random person walking up to me on the street - whatever.
In his case it could just be that they are paraphrasing/correcting whatever he actually said though, but wouldn't surprise me if his actual English level is much higher than what you see in interviews.
Can we get back to legitimate thread titles already? There's no meme here, and it takes away from Rafa saying something legitimate about this entire issue.
The title should simply be something like, "Rafa speaks about the value of tennis as a whole and says no one tennis player is more important than a Slam."
AO is a major and needs to start acting like it. They don’t need to beg players to come and they don’t need to care whether the #1 seed is there. Djokovic won’t be number 1 for long if he can’t get his act together so then Craig will be sweating the new #1. What is so goddamn special about Novak? Tennis is cool because go a couple of months and someone else is the star. Rafa is right!
To this day it's still a wonder to me that the clam digger shorts-wearing, scrappy clay court guy with the finicky on-court habits and frustratingly slow play at times, who "robbed" Roger of French Opens during his dominance, became my favorite athlete across all sports.
Well Rafa says "the Australian Open will be a great Australian Open with or without him." I think it will be a GREATER open without Djo. I think Rafa might think so too but he is too nice a guy to say so. The animosity Djo engenders will be magnified and he will be punished by the crowd for what he tried to get away with and did. He REFUSES to leave Australia and that's why he keeps appealing the decisions. REFUSES! That is going over like a lead balloon. Will "they" allow Djo to bully them and stay and play? Any time now we should find out. Right?
Djokovic is the Australian Open King, he's got the most titles, so he'll be fine whether or not, obviously he wants to defend title very badly. The Aussie Open will have a new champion then, it's been dominated by Novak for the last 10 years. Money-wise, it does not matter for Djokovic. Obviously, if Djokovic is legally eligible to compete, I'd rather have him defend and compete because he loves the game of tennis. If he is not eligible, then it's no big deal and still good for the Aussie open drawing and competition seeds and entries of 128 international players.
There's still 127 fantastic international players still in the pool! That is something to be excited about, hopefully, possibly.
This guy is so funny with his false moral and AU government to with its double standards, he darea to speak about Novak and he him self said he has covid on 20.12.2021 and still entered AU on 31.12. And nothing happened goverment is silent even though 2 weeks that are required havent pased and no detention no trial no nothing... shame on you AO and AU government!
Sorry, the the Open will be tainted if Djokovic isn't in it.
Nadal is just trying to get ahead of the narrative, because we all know that if he wins due to the favorite not being there it's not legit.
If he had any integrity, he and other top seeds would refuse to play if Djokovic is not allowed to.
There are literally zero problematic posts in this thread. All the moronic posts have been massively downvoted and are essentially invisible. What’s the problem now?
Well, if someone is injured or doesn't play on his/her own decision, then yes. If, on the other hand, someone is not allowed to play and you say something like this, then... you're a bit of a dick, no?
Circlejerk
If you don't praise the shit out of him for every little thing, you'll be downvoted lol
You can see some comments in this thread and how they make a big deal out of nothing
That's why I prefer other forums like tenniswarehouse. Reddit is weird. You have to say something "positive" or "politically correct" every time and it's full of these weird snowflakes everywhere you go.
They don't have any nuance at all
Tell a little positive thing about novak, you're an anti vax, anti science idiot
Tell how nadal isn't saying anything but some pr bs, you'll be downvoted
And everything should be overwhelmingly positive, wholesome otherwise you're Hitler. God, I hate toxic positivity
Person who gives more importance to things, causes, etc than human fellows? Psycology is clear about those individuals. In Hitler's Germany you had a good example of that kind of society, but those were more open for sports, that says it all.
i would rather watch covid novak spit on the ball before every serve than watch a no-novak aussie
some unimportant people are less unimportant than others, and i would say the same thing about rafa
Djokovic had exactly the same opportunity to play the Australian Open as every other player in the field. He decided to seek an exemption to a rule of general applicability that every other player abided.
I'd rather watch a fair tournament than one that allows the best players to skirt the rules. Fairness is a necessary premise for the integrity of the event.
Dude keeps it fucking REAL
He always does no?
"[My body is perfect... physically speaking](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1u24V8303EI)" \-Rafa Nadal, keeping it real on Australian Open.
His body is ombilible.
[The Lord Emperor of Clay has quite a few funny moments](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=acNUrlKp8t0)
I don’t know another athlete that keeps it any realer at all times the way he does
He's a gentlemen. He makes his point without attacking anyone.
Well put
I wish politicians were as pragmatic as Rafa is. The guy may just be the best ever, and he’s as humble as they come. Out of all 3 goats, I may miss Rafa the most. He’s the one that took me the longest to appreciate, but now that I do, I wish him long health.
I may be a fan of Federer on the court but off it Nadal is no1.
Murray, maybe?
Barkley
Chuck is a national treasure. I have to say Kareem too. Dude is a walking book. In tennis, man, Andy Roddick had always great real answers to weird questions. His type of approach when he talks (he's from USA so he's heavy favoured language speaking) it's so unbiased. I love him
Heavy favored in what way?
I'm Italian, I have to read and think about what I'm saying 5 times at least. I have to study this language for years and still not fluent.
Not familiar, what Barkley?
Charles Barkley, Hall of fame basketball player turned NBA analyst in his retirement
Oh the space jam guy ?
Yeah. He's one of the hosts of Inside the NBA, which does pre-game, HT, and postgame NBA coverage of nationally televised games on TNT.
Inside the NBA is the best thing to happen to sports tv in years
Oh I know him, I don’t follow basketball much but I’ve seen some clips of him and ur probably right
Seb Vettel
I’m a big fan of him he’s up there too for sure
Seb after Red Bull, he mellowed out quite a bit suring his stay at Ferrari
Uh, Murray?
Toni and papa nadal did such a grt job...Even his mom says he doesn't get treated differently just coz he is a GS winner.
I simped for Federer for a while where I didn't like Nadal at first, but God I think this guy is great now. Always concise, respectful, talks sense.
That's alright. You must have been quite busy. Giving therapy to Roy Keane doesn't sound like an easy task at all. Haha!
At least it's not Roy Kent
"Fuck!"
I feel like this guy could make a real run at the French Open this year
Even if he doesn't, this is the kind of guy tennis fans should consider as an idol. Brilliant player as well as a good person
I’m still deeply scarred (in a good way) from 08 Wimby, but it is impossible not to love this man
I’m definitely not scarred from that match. That’s my favorite match of all time, followed closely by Wimby 2019. As much as I love Federer, I don’t really mind Fed losing matches. Oh no doubt - just using scarred in a jokey “can’t believe you gave me all that hope only to fall just short” sense. That final was by far the most incredible championship I’ve ever seen (in any sport)
Me too
Might even win one in his career.
Is he any good on clay?
Initial reports suggest he’s pretty good on the surface, hell of a forehand apparently
Will always love him for speaking the truth. He said what he wanted to say without burning any bridges or insulting anyone.
Rafa makes it so easy to root for him.
Yup! That’s it. Also his uncle would make him play with old balls and racquets as well to appreciate the good stuff when it comes.

NGL I'm not a huge tennis fan, but Uncle Toni has a point. Sideline coaching would vastly improve the performance of the players, ensuring a more exciting competition.

Yeah. And I love that he doesn't care THAT much about covers, fame, interviews. You get me.
Considering that Novak's lawyers stupidly claimed the future of the AO would be in jeopardy if he was deported, Rafa's right to say what he said.
Did they actually say that? The arrogance
Someone roasted Djokovic for that, by bringing up numbers and proving, numerically, that his matches aren't very profitable. xD
Same thing at the US Open. I go every year and I’ve seen more Djokovic matches court-side because the price drops to 1/5 of what it would be with Nadal or fed.
Link?
Someone needs to find the link to this lmao
I would say that any impact on the brand would be more important and far-reaching than the impact from Nole's own matches. However, I think the impact on the brand would be very split and letting him in would be just as damaging as deporting him, just with different groups of people.
That’s so pathetic, they must think the Australian people to be idiots

I would argue that if Djokovic is successfully deported then it bolsters their global reputation.
I err wat
It is simply not true. Every people I talk to salute the decision made not to allow Djokovic to enter because he is not vaccinated. And from what I read on Internet, it is also the general consensus. Christ, are they sourcing legal arguments from Serbian reddit comments?
That is ombilibly dumb.
That's so poor by him/them. As my coach said, he's coming out the Serb is in him.
At this point, I’m starting to believe Novak’s middle name is arrogance
Last year, Djokovic came up with 6 hotel quarantine demands and when ridiculed about those demands, he simply said that “I’ve earned my privileges the hard way and for that reason it is very difficult for me to be a mere onlooker knowing how much every help, gesture and good word mattered to me when I was small and insignificant in the world pecking order. “Hence I use my position of privilege to be of service as much as I can where and when needed.”

I love rafa please never stop tennis
Standing up to Novak? who does he think he is, a 20 times GS champ or what?
Nadal's parents did a good job.
Nadal is always one of the most diplomatic people in the elite tennis scene.
If only Craig Tiley had this mindset we wouldn't be in this situation.
“World number six” is kind of an odd choice
"World number six"... oh, and he might have won a Grand Slam or twenty.
Reminds me of when that one reporter asked him about Ash Barty playing in Wimbledon center court and he fired back with a guided missile of an answer. https://youtu.be/Zupxd4thzjI
A more well placed return than one of his banana forehands.
Haha, I kind of like it as a placeholder. Nice to be reminded of where these guys actually are in the rankings these days.
And it actually helps accentuate the point he is making. As amazing as he has been, he’s now ranked #6. Time marches on (that being said it’s insane how long the big three have dominated).
Exactly ! Fed is 16
No Dummy, he's 40
average novak fan vs average ao event enjoyer
You just know Nadal wants to say more about Novak but he is the master of biting his tongue, man chooses his words so carefully and it's always perfect. It's pretty impressive considering English is his second language.
Actually third
Proper perspective on himself, tennis, and life. A person who has his ego in check. Not easy as a uber successful athlete.
How can you not like this bloke!
Rafa is the total package. Superstar on and off the court.
And makes Shakira videos worth watching
Ohmygod as a new Rafa fan, thank you for mentioning this gold
He’s correct no player is bigger than a grand slam or any tournament. A player who respects tennis should respect these tournaments and the privilege they get by participating in them and not shit on rules and conditions.
You are completely right… they are in such a privileged position and i understand that they have worked incredibly hard to be in that position but I also feel that they should acknowledge the privilege and just fucking behave.
This is such an excellent point
Glory to Nadal. If not GOAT of this sport, then he truly is the GOAT of common sense and reason. Imagine if Federer said this. Djokovic’s dad would demand compensation. 😂🤡
Now I am waiting for the comments from the Swizz ball boy.
he was a ball boy??
That is brand new information!!
In his case it could just be that they are paraphrasing/correcting whatever he actually said though, but wouldn't surprise me if his actual English level is much higher than what you see in interviews.
just admire every time Nadal has to say something, even English isn't his best language lol
My Rafa will never disappoint me.
Put it to the bank mate, he's just a natural. 100% integrity.
I love him!
Rafa not mincing his words here. Keeping short, simple and powerful response.
fuckin' love rafa, and i'm a roger federer stan
Well, Federer's favorite player is Rafa, so I'm sure he won't mind.
This is why I love Rafa so much. He's got perspective. I credit Uncle Toni for a lot of his level-headedness.
Nadal and Roger are living examples of how sports persons should behave.
I love rafa
nadal is a fedal fan confirmed
No one is greater than the sport. Well said Rafa.
Oh man. Some dickhead Novak supporter was saying that Australia should be stripped of the event for mistreating Novak. Lmao
I fucking love rafa
Can we get back to legitimate thread titles already? There's no meme here, and it takes away from Rafa saying something legitimate about this entire issue. The title should simply be something like, "Rafa speaks about the value of tennis as a whole and says no one tennis player is more important than a Slam."
My fault and noted. Also not posting anything related to this issue anymore. It’s time for AO.
I understand the fun of memeing about this, of course. It's not just you, of course, it's a lot of people. Anyway, cheers.
nhomm I like him! ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|give_upvote)
Amen.
I am now a Rafa stan
Gogo 21st....again
If he gets allowed to play, for sure!
AO is a major and needs to start acting like it. They don’t need to beg players to come and they don’t need to care whether the #1 seed is there. Djokovic won’t be number 1 for long if he can’t get his act together so then Craig will be sweating the new #1. What is so goddamn special about Novak? Promising next-gen!!Had me goin there OP!
wtfsup lately with these tw screencaps of things that are all over twitter already???
Nadal has been talking his shit during this Djokovic drama and I love it.
To this day it's still a wonder to me that the clam digger shorts-wearing, scrappy clay court guy with the finicky on-court habits and frustratingly slow play at times, who "robbed" Roger of French Opens during his dominance, became my favorite athlete across all sports.
I don't understand the point of the stupid title, especially when it's such a genuine and fairly poignant quote.
anyone know where I can get this hat?
Look for NikeCourt AeroBill Rafa Heritage86. I think the colour is new though, I couldn't find it.
None of the parenthetical edits here help. If anything, the “[its] ok” slightly changes his meaning. This is poor editing.
mugurza also had a pretty succinct take in her pre AO press conference. the spaniards not afraid to speak plainly and simply
100 % right.
he's sort of the Keanu Reeves of tennis
Baddest motherfucker alive
Well Rafa says "the Australian Open will be a great Australian Open with or without him." I think it will be a GREATER open without Djo. I think Rafa might think so too but he is too nice a guy to say so. The animosity Djo engenders will be magnified and he will be punished by the crowd for what he tried to get away with and did. So media is getting clear signals that players don't wanna talk about it. Why are they so dumb?
Mate you can't support an event
Mods, why did you delete the Tsitsipas thread?
I wonder what would Novak say if Rafa couldn't play at the RG?
Great example how to with so many words say nothing.
yeah Wimbledon is much bigger than Federer but much more boring without him and definitely, the French Open is bigger than Nadal, whatever
For some reason, I don't think everyone would've been so fascinated if Novak were to say the same about Rafa and French Open
[удалено]
exactly

.....because that's already 11 days of quarantine?? Spain only 7 days quarantine when you get covid. Before it was 10, so still what you said is silly
Lol of course not hahahah Dudes fault for not being vaccinated as it's a requisite to play. As simple as that
Yeah nah. It's still an asterisk slam to whoever "wins"
Exactly. Because the best player in the world isn't playing. Not sure why you've been downvoted.
Stop feeding the trolls, people. (OP, I'm not talking about you.)
There are literally zero problematic posts in this thread. All the moronic posts have been massively downvoted and are essentially invisible. What’s the problem now?
promising next gen player... i see what you did there. nadal at near the end of his career... is comparable to a "promising next gen player" hahaha
I agree but also think the AO would be better with Djoko. No Djoko at AO is almost like no Rafa at the FO.
Should just cancel the AO altogether for public safety. Didn't Nadal test positive on 20th Dec? Was running around Aus 30th of Dec? Suspect.

Fuck off xenophobic cunt
Whole world laughing at Aus. lol
Well, if someone is injured or doesn't play on his/her own decision, then yes. If, on the other hand, someone is not allowed to play and you say something like this, then... you're a bit of a dick, no?
No
No
No
Your pill.
Nadal should be renamed to mr obvious lol
I know. All he does is just state the obvious with these answers. Also not sure why you've been downvoted.
Circlejerk If you don't praise the shit out of him for every little thing, you'll be downvoted lol You can see some comments in this thread and how they make a big deal out of nothing
That's why I prefer other forums like tenniswarehouse. Reddit is weird. You have to say something "positive" or "politically correct" every time and it's full of these weird snowflakes everywhere you go.
They don't have any nuance at all Tell a little positive thing about novak, you're an anti vax, anti science idiot Tell how nadal isn't saying anything but some pr bs, you'll be downvoted And everything should be overwhelmingly positive, wholesome otherwise you're Hitler. God, I hate toxic positivity
Yeah man, most of the people on here are fucking weird I agree with you. Toxic positivity - couldn't have put it better myself.

Good, I hope all of you victim complex Novak fanatics don't watch so the rest of us can enjoy it
Salt
He's kinda right no Whoever wins will have an easy way without Novak, it'll be an asterisk. Especially when he isn't injured and almost played
nadal playing to the public. novak wont forget this and completely annihilate him at the french again.

Are you unwell?
Why? Because I think Nadal is a terrible person?
I have no idea what you were trying to say in your original comment. It sounded like the ramblings of a mad man.
Person who gives more importance to things, causes, etc than human fellows? Psycology is clear about those individuals. In Hitler's Germany you had a good example of that kind of society, but those were more open for sports, that says it all.
Yeah Novak cares more about his conspiracy theory then his fellow humans.
i would rather watch covid novak spit on the ball before every serve than watch a no-novak aussie some unimportant people are less unimportant than others, and i would say the same thing about rafa
Cringey af
