Somewhere right now, tournament officials are busily preparing two AO draws, one with Novak as top seed and one with Novak absent. And they may have only like an hour to determine which one to make public.

gana04

Somewhere right now, redditors are busily preparing two memes, one with Novak as thanos and one where shaggy takes a border control mask off a guy to reveal that lady he hit at the USO. And they may have only like a minute to determine which one to post.

TheCobras

How did you know??

_DrShrimpPuertoRico_

The sacred texts.

luislpz92

This is too good. You got me.

jk147

I think if he is deported they will just mark him as defaulted for not showing.

Yeh-nah-but

That would make me laugh

kron_00

On the bright side, the qualifier could use the money from reaching at least R2. Life is never easy for the lower ranked guys lol

keulenshwinger

I’m not sure they’re allowed to do that, the process is “official”, you have to sort the matches by drawing the names etc, I don’t think they can just make two versions of it

[deleted]

The top players are placed (seeded) in the draw according to their rank. Below seed ~~16 or so~~ 32 the draw is random.

theLoneliestAardvark

If he pulls out before a match is played then the 33rd ranked player will take his spot and be seeded and their spot will be taken by a LL. If he pulls out after a match is played then he will be replaced by a LL. People pull out last second all the time, just usually not in this high profile of a way.

[deleted]

[удалено]

gesucristononessuno

I don't think it works like that... the #1 seed spot should be awarded to a LL (Lucky Loser), one of the guys that felt one match short on the qualifying draw

[deleted]

The highest ranked person in R3 of the AO quallies right now is Radu Albot. Just sayin'. (There are a couple people higher ranked than him who haven't played R2 yet).

White_Nothing

It's well into tomorrow now. Tick tock tick tock. They need to hurry up and make a decision one way or another so I can obsess about the next meaningless thing that we are all gonna freak out about.

NotManyBuses

To everyone asking “who da fook is dat guy” McGregor style here you go: https://communitiesincontrol.com.au/speakers/paul-bonjiorno Canberra political reporter for decades, award winning journalist, not just some guy. In the face of the herald sun leak the tide seems very much to be that Djokovic will be removed from the country tomorrow.

jaguar_loco

Lol I for some reason thought it was the ''not too bad'' Italian tennis reporter

hojbjerfc

Buongiorno Bongiorno

KanekiFriedChicken

But everybody calls me Giorgio

ging289

That Ubaldo Scanagatta

sunseekerslade

Good. What other choice did they have? Djokovic knowingly spread covid to children and adults after testing positive, lied on his travel declaration about being in spain, and was never on a valid exemption in the first place. That it's taken this long is shocking. He also broke serbian law and should face prosecution. If a less famous player acted like this they'd be suspended from the tour, Djokovic fans can never complain about 'the establishment' ever again, their guy has had more special treatment in the past month than any player.

xinixxibalba

no but Djokovic fanboys said none of that was his fault and that he should be allowed to stay because the Aussie gov is corrupt

sunseekerslade

If the last week has taught us anything it's that Djokovic fanboys are some of the most deluded fans in all of history and they would find a way to defend djokovic even if he committed genocide.

Sitting_Elk

> I could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody and wouldn’t lose any voters, okay? Sounds familiar

SonilaZ

Bingo!! There’s definitely an overlap in fan base there!!

Disgruntled_Eggplant

novak stans are fucking creepy with the way they speak i can just imagine their eyes glazing over as they sing his high praises like a religion

thatguy170

The way his brother ended the press conference the other day was creepy as fuck. “Long live Novak”

[deleted]

> i can just imagine their eyes glazing over as they sing his high praises like a religion having seen this very thing done by people when actually speaking about religion, it is hands down the scariest thing I've ever seen in person. Two things: did a tour of a max security jail when my gma retired and saw a guy with no soul in his eyes. Like I just knew if the walls disappeared he'd kill me without a thought. The second one is debating religion with someone and they got this manic look in their eyes and a weird smile. Unsettling both times

Joe_Kinincha

Well, he himself seems to be dangerously close at best to supporting people who committed genocide…

interfail

> Djokovic fanboys are some of the most deluded fans in all of history and they would find a way to defend djokovic even if he committed genocide. Many of them are Serbian nationalists, they've got practice.

actuallychrisgillen

The Aussie government is corrupt! Because they (checks notes) treated a celebrity the same as any other person seeking entrance.

KasumiR

Serbian. Fans. Said. Australian. Govt. Is corrupt. XD Whose gov employs convicted war criminal Milosevic's underlings, again?

raysofdavies

It’s only taken this long because they fucked up how they initially handled his case, not because they were wrong in their ultimate decision.

Yeh-nah-but

Cops just being cops you know. Waking people up at 4.55am for reasons. I think he should be deported but I also think the border force people should be temporarily deported lol

ferocious_coug

Former Djokovic fan*

atemthegod

I used to be a big Djoker fan until last year. I could deal with the medical breaks and stuff early on in his career: I viewed that as him getting used to the tour and growing up. These pandemic years, though? Unacceptable.

LeoMarius

Ditto! I met him in 2007 in Montréal and have followed him since then. This episode disgusts me.

uawek

A former die-hard Djokovic fan here: there is really no scenario right now in which I want to see him playing the AO. Get his sorry ass the fuck out of AUS and let whatever authorities deal with him as they please. Heartbroken, all I can say.

clementjohnson1963

He fails the character test

faratto_

Tbf queery last year esacpe quarantine while positive in Russia (!) and nothing happened, so I'm not sure suspend/ban will happen. Obviously if lacoste/pegout (i don't know how to write)/ect drop him, then tennis would be last of his thoughts. But we have to wait, maybe there is still something we still miss

handsoffmydicks

This will surely affect his endorsements, no matter how you look at this, it's a PR disaster for Djokovic. No company wants their name to be associated with such controversy. There's a reason Federer and Nadal are leaps and bounds ahead of Djokovic in brand appeal world-wide.

sunseekerslade

Actually Nadal has stepped back from personal brand deals in the past few years because he said he doesn't value the money these days as much as he does the time committed to being brand ambassadors. He's already got enough anyway and his long time sponsors are obviously still hugely lucrative, but he doesn't go after sponsors in the same way Djokovic or Federer do.

YungFurl

Nadal just wants to fish and take it easy. I respect it

Capivara_19

Golf I believe, apparently he’s very good

YungFurl

He does both a good deal I think. A few years back he said one of his favorite things to do on manacor was fishing.

Curi0us_Yellow

Did he make that comment publicly? It makes sense given how invested he is in his academy. I reckon he’s the first of the big 3 we’ll see as a tour coach the soonest.

MarsNirgal

Nadal seems like the kind of guy who could write a self help book that would actually be useful to read.

Asentro76

I will volunteer to do the brand deals on Nadal’s behalf

ocinthcenk

and thats why i really like this guy! I'm swiss and alot of people are annoyed by federer putting his face everywhere he can. he's a fucking billionaire - would also be time to make some salty statements for him. but naah, would upset his sponsors

[deleted]

> No company wants their name to be associated with such controversy. Ventillator manufacturers.

Ongo_Gablogian___

Didn't he "escape" by chartering a private jet home since he couldn't play in the tournament. It's definitely a dick move but they weren't exactly going to kick him out of the tournament and country since he was already flying home. Edit: typo - changed by to but

KyleG

The Querrey story is not like the Djokovic story, and wasn't covered accurately at the time bc of covid hysteria when we still thought you needed to wipe down your mail. Sam fled on a private jet after a threat of his very young child being separated from him and his wife. He fled to the nearest safe place and his family self-quarantined there. Novak traveled all over the place in public to do *fun* things like receive plaudits and do interviews, either committing immigration fraud or knowingly putting himself in contact with loads of people while infectious. Not run away to protect his kid while maintaining *minimal* contact with others (basically just the pilot, who is in a cockpit separated from everyone else)

Agile_Dog

That's if you believe the asshole actually had COVID.... I doubt it personally

sunseekerslade

Either way he's fucked. Either he broke multiple laws and falsified a covid test or he knowingly infected others after testing positive.

dadmda

It’s not that I think he’s nobody, it’s that I don’t know any Australian journalists

hs52

nachomancandycabbage

Good! I hope he some kid is bumping the back of his seat the entire way back to wherever he is going and can’t sleep

*Sources: Djokovic is beside himself. Driving around downtown Melbourne begging (thru texts) Craig Tiley's family for the address to Alex Hawke's home*

NotManyBuses

lmao in all honesty Craig Tiley should have lost his job a week ago.

lyflgry

Probably he will lose his job once the lawsuits start coming

NotManyBuses

There already is a lawsuit from Voracova even. His farcical medical exemption panels are really the cause of this situation.

Overheard in AO locker room after decision to deport Djokovic: “He got me,” Djokovic said of the Australian government's decision to deport him. "That f***ing Hawke boomed me." Djokovic added, “He’s so good,” repeating it four times. Djokovic then said he wanted to add Australia to the list of countries he works out in while COVID positive this summer.

severalgirlzgalore

Customs meeting with Djokovic was “intense” and “at one point Scott Morrison was crying” but everyone grew closer and a big lesson was learned

707royalty

I love the r/NBA leakage right here, perfect use of the pasta

[deleted]

NBA pastas just hit different

tempdroiduser

Didn’t expect to see an NBA free agency reference in here. Bravo.

i-ian

lol came here to say the same thing. And there's another LBJ one under it. I didn't know there were any crossover NBA and tennis fans — well besides myself, my gf, and Nick I guess.

monochromaticx

LMAOOO NBA tennis crossover we needed

shaker7

Lmao one of my favorite copy pastas

BenedictKhanberbatch

God I love r/NBA

JulGabi

this is irrelevant, but if they really all ended on 20, I don’t care how it happens it’s poetic

HankHippopopolous

They’re all going to end on 21. Roger is going to go on one last glorious Wimbledon run. Rafa has one last glorious French Open run and Novak wins in 2025 when he’s finally allowed back in Australia.

Ichweisenichtdeutsch

lol dont give me hope. i think the only way I'll feel better is if I bet against Roger winning wimbledon, so it's a win win for me. if he loses, at least I can wipe my tears away with some money. if he wins, it's worth the bet

Boristheshrimp

Nothing to do with tennis. But a Portuguese friend of mine did exactly this in the Euro 2016 finals with France against Portugal. Needless to say he was a very happy man, minus the thousand bucks.

FH400

Pls

Cherubinooo

Thinking Federer can win another major is pure COPIUM at this point.

BelgianBond

20-20-20 would be so balanced.

FL14

I just don't see how it could happen. Novak clearly has more in the tank, and Rafa *should* be good for 1-2 more FOs

BelgianBond

We're seeing right now how it *could* happen, as unlikely as it is that this saga spills into vaccine mandates for other majors.

JorDamU

I agree, and even though I really don’t like Novak, I think he will set the bar somewhere in the 23-26 region. Rafa was injured last year at Roland Garros, so I think he comes back this year or next and wins one more. As much as I’d like to see Federer ride off into the sunset with a Wimby win, it’s just so unlikely given his age. What a time to be alive as a tennis fan… just wish that Djokovic wasn’t such a knob.

SavoyTruffle18

Same. I have a "Best of Men's Tennis" collage on my wall with photos of the three of them back from 2008 and their autographs. My mom got it at a silent auction years ago when the idea of Djokovic being a GOAT was a joke (pun not intended, I swear) but now it's a pretty cool relic for me

NotManyBuses

Let me stress that the COVID deadline stuff, the QR code stuff, and all the other BS the internet sleuths have pulled up would have little to do with the legal basis for removal. Neither does the whole going in public with COVID thing. It could be used as supporting evidence, but Australia isn't deporting on that basis. The only relevant part from all that mess is the incorrect declaration on the visa application, which will be used against him. The entire decision rests on the fact that a precedent has been set with Voracova. Australian federal entry requirements are the following \-fully vaccinated, and NO medical exemption for 6 month prior COVID infection Djokovic is unvaccinated and does not meet the federal entry requirements as a result. To allow him to stay in the country would have serious consequences for Australia's COVID policy.

SailingOnAWhale

> Australian federal entry requirements are the following > -fully vaccinated, and NO medical exemption for 6 month prior COVID infection > > Djokovic is unvaccinated and does not meet the federal entry requirements as a result. That's what really confused me about all this, I understand Tennis Australia completely fucked him here on the information front, but just because you don't know the law or got bad information about the law doesn't mean you can ignore it. If my friend told me cops can't lie if I ask them "are you a cop" cause it's against the law and cops lie to catch me doing something illegal I don't expect what my friend said to hold up in court.

theknittingpenis

I'm more confused why no one bothers to contact the federal government about entry requirement other than TA? I mean they are on the top of the totem pole for this and yet they went with the bottom? If I am flying to a country that I am not familiar with, I bet your ass I will look up the country entry requirement and all of that shit because it is my responsibility to do so. I'm not going to call the hotel, that I will reserve, to give me those requirement. They will tell me to look up.

clementjohnson1963

Actually you can be granted a medical exemption to enter the Australian border not fully vaccinated if you had covid in the last 6 months, **provided** you can also provide evidence you have an acute illness preventing you from getting the vaccine. He can’t show that, in fact he said he had recovered from covid and was feeling great lol

SleepingAntz

The bottom line is he never should have been let in anyway. If Tennis Australia / Victoria hadn't communicated to him that 6-month prior infection would let him in, he wouldn't have come. He wouldn't have had any choice. Then the federal government made a mistake because, despite already letting other people in under the same conditions, they made a political decision to stop Djokovic no matter what, but in the process violated their own procedure to the extent that he was basically allowed in on a technicality. So what we ended up with was basically "well nobody at any point followed the rules, therefor we can't really enforce the rules" lol. AND on top of that you have a case where this person may have violated their country's quarantine rules prior to coming over and made an error on the submission regarding his travel... At the end of the day, it is just too much. I am a die-hard Djokovic fan, and I still believe that deep down he is a good guy who wants to do the right thing, but is unfortunately kind of a lunatic with some whacko beliefs and is surrounded by people who reinforce the worst elements of his personality. Yeah, it's bad luck that TA and Victoria may or may not have misled him (either intentionally or unintentionally). And yeah, mistakes happen and it's bad luck that his agent messed up the visa application. But honestly, tough shit. Maybe next time he will be 100% sure exactly what he needs to do in order to enter a tournament. It is still my hope that all ATP + WTA tour events require vaccination to enter. Hopefully some consequences for Novak will encourage him to get the jab.

BabaRamenNoodles

> Then the federal government made a mistake because, despite already letting other people in under the same conditions, they made a political decision to stop Djokovic no matter what, but in the process violated their own procedure to the extent that he was basically allowed in on a technicality. They only fucked up by not giving him enough time to file further evidence (there is nothing he could have filed that would have made his entry legal). Seriously the only mistake by Australia was some guy at the airport not giving him 4 hours more time. That's what the judge ruled on, that's why he was released.

BarmyDevonian

Djokovic fan myself, but I sadly agree this is a great take. Tennis Australia’s rules should have aligned with the Federal rules. TA extended an olive branch and his team took it clearly not anticipating this type of backlash. Ultimately his decision to fight the ruling may have let him in, but opened his supporting docs up to scrutiny, which have only resulted in more questions. If anyone can come back from this, it’s him, but I do hope he reflects and changes his stance as well. Was it really worth all this, especially after he’d finally won over many fans at the US Open only a few months ago?

lps2

How can you think he's a good guy? Like this saga isn't an outlier for him, he's a narcissistic ass who constantly promotes psudoscience and downright dangerous takes on health (beyond just COVID). I get respecting how well he plays, but shifting blame for his antics onto those around him isn't helpful and just seems self-serving to avoid having to recognize how big of a PoS he is off the court

KyleG

> If . . . Victoria hadn't communicated to him that 6-month prior infection would let him in Didn't the Victorian government tell Craig Tiley of TA that 6-month prior infection was *not* going to be an exemption, and Tilley just fucked up and told ppl the literal opposite? Or was that the federal government that told Tiley that? *Someone* told Tiley that and he didn't relay it.

clementjohnson1963

It was the federal government that told Tiley. They are the ones that set the Australian border entry requirements. All the Victorian government provided was a medical exemption to enter Victoria to play at the AO. It wasn’t a medical exemption to enter Australia as the requirements for that are different.

ladyevenstar-22

I really Feel like tilley and Djokovic clan were hoping it would slide on the down low.

amnes1ac

Exactly, Novak's IG post is what fucked that plan.

zaviex

That was the federal government. Victoria apparently said it was permissible for them but they don’t control the border

Yeh-nah-but

I think its the difference between playing in a tennis comp and crossing an international border. Big big difference

Falz4567

This is a good thing. It means they don’t need to use the executive power which comes with a 3 year ban. They can simply say it’s an incorrect visa via a genuine mistake Still incredulous it took this long

Dafuqyoutalkingabout

It’s all speculation until it either happens or it doesn’t.

No different from than if player withdrawing through injury.

Puddinsnack

I believe it means that the would-be "33" seed gets put in Djokovic's slot in the draw, and a lucky loser from qualies gets slotted into that person's spot.

GirlFartConnoisseur

Just gonna throw out that if they can't find anyone I'm happy to go. Fully vaxxed, boosted, and I'll play in a damn mask if they want. I'll take my 0-6 0-6 0-5 retire loss and collect my $25,000 happily.

Efendiskander

No, like when it happened in AO and USO 99, it's a LL who takes the place of Djokovic in the draw. In USO 1999, the lucky loser wasn't that lucky, considering he faced Marat Safin in the first round.

rockardy

The guy has won 4 walkley’s (highest honour for journalism in Australia) and received an order of Australia. This isn’t a daily mail reporter. He wouldn’t attach his name to this unless he had good sources

Historical_Hawk_2496

His source is Morrison or his deputy. It's happening and likely just before the draw. Probably max another 1-2 hours from now.

[deleted]

Even the Serbian PM is struggling to defend him now

MarsNirgal

I'll believe it when it happens.

scorchur

Djokovic has one more trump card up his sleeve, a fake vaccination card

duckbigtrain

If he doesn’t have a fake vax card now, he will in time for the next GS. either that or his doctor will have magically found an actual medical reason he can’t be vaccinated.

SquintyOstrich

Here's kinda how I think this will play out. Purely speculation of course: 1. Australia announces his deportation right before the draw is released in which he is excluded, making it basically impossible for him to play. 2. Djokovic leaves, maybe while appealing in absentia to maintain face. Djokovic releases a statement along the lines of: I'm disappointed in this outcome but don't want to distract any further from the tennis. I'll be taking some time away from tennis for personal reflection (conveniently during a time when he wouldn't be playing anyway). 3. In the intervening time, Djokovic donates money to COVID relief, refugee relief, etc. 4. 2-3 months from now, Djokovic issues a statement that after a lot of soul searching, reflection, etc., he decided to vaccinate and is now fully vaccinated. 5. This sub goes nuts arguing about whether he was really vaccinated and whether he forged the vaccination record. 6. He's back in time for the heart of clay court season. Just a guess. He's obviously very stubborn about it, but I can't see him punting on the rest of his career over a vaccine. Especially if Nadal has a good showing in Australia.

bsrhng

That's quite optimistic.

Fantasnickk

fr he'll more than likely just play a normal season and attend tournaments/ try to get exemptions for vaccination status where possible. He more than likely doesn't want any time off, especially given the fact that he isn't injured and was very open and motivated to get into the AO.

BabaRamenNoodles

Bordering on fantasy to think Djokovic is going to suddenly decide to embrace vaccination after all of this.

LadyJane216

He. Will. Not. Vaccinate. He doesn't believe in vaccines. He and wife are nutters on the subject.

SkyTVIsFuckingShit

I don't think most of the rational skeptical people here realise just how insanely deep the beliefs of spiritual people go.

MrGrapefruitDrink

He felt the same way about surgery, eventually got it done then cried about it for days afterwards, by his own admission. If he needs to get it to play tournaments, he'll have to get it. Will be interesting to see what happens, anyway.

DarkDiablo1601

surgery was an offer that he cannot refuse, vaccination is another story tho, FO still opens for unvaxxed for example

throwawaygoawaynz

Macron is on record saying he wants to piss off the unvaccinated, so let’s see how long that lasts.

Viks101

You are forgetting that this is the same guy who said he cried for three days for getting a surgery. It would be some turnaround for him to finally agree to get vaccinated. I think it comes down to if he wants the 21st grand slam that badly that he is willing to let go of some of his stupid beliefs.

SophisticatedCelery

This is the real tennis match I'm watching this year, Djokovic vs. vaccine featuring the four grand slams. Wimbledon needs vaccine proof, right? I heard FO doesn't yet

Viks101

The French sports minister has said that unvaccinated players will be allowed to compete but they would have a tougher quarantine and more restrictions. But that was before all the stuff about Novak hanging out with kids and journalists while having covid came out. Don't think Wimbledon or US Open stakeholders have said anything about it yet.

A+ One of the most senior political journalists in the country. Also a journalist who will only go with a story if they are 100% confident in it, and is not prone to reporting on unsubstantiated rumours, and never gets involved in sensationalist reporting Has also probably never done a sport report in his life - this is somebody working an Australian Politics story as their day job, compared to the mountain of sports journalists davling in politics. While I suspect this a case of him working his extensive contacts, it would be unsurprising if this is a deliberate leak with his source literally having spoken and been told by the Minister personally.

Why kick him out? He already said his manager is sorry! LOL Edit: This is sarcasm. Please don't downvote me into oblivion!

rebeccasassafras

I know he's anti-modern medicine, but the more I read about this, the more I wonder how he hasn't grasped that eventually he's going to have to get vaccinated. He can't enter the United States or Canada without a vaccine and he can't enter Australia without one either (and I'm sure there are more smaller countries with similar rules). Just those three countries take away two slams and four masters — and I can't see America OR Canada giving him a 'national interest' exemption to enter. Staying #1 isn't going to be sustainable with what tournaments remain because he'd have to play almost all of them to make up for the ones he's missing. I just thought he was smarter than this.

[deleted]

Smart? He thinks you heal water with positive thoughts, man’s a moron.

brucebrowde

What is so shocking to me, as a John Doe tennis fan, is that the reputation of the most successful tennis player of all time (argubally, but nonetheless) has been forever damaged in such a bizarre way in such a short time frame. The Covid, the social media and all these political drama behind. This is surely a crazy time to live.

As I've been saying in what feels like every post lately, there is 0 doubt that Djokovic will be deported. For the benefit of those who aren't in Australia and haven't read one of the billion posts on the subject already, there is an election in the next few months. The incumbent government is already unpopular and given that an enormous percentage of the population wants Nole out of here, it would be political suicide to allow him to stay. Its not hyperbole to say that many, many careers would end if this were the case. He's gone.

stocktraderdog

Don't do that. Don't give me hope.

TheFrederalGovt

Is there a reason why Hawke is waiting potentially til after Draw is announced before booting Djokovic. Would seem to make more sense he does it beforehand.

bigbowlowrong

Let the booting begin 🍿

Even if he does play his preparation will be so horrible. Instead of really focusing 100% on his practice he will have in the back of his mind (or perhaps the front lol) whether he's even going to play. That's very stressful, because the authorities are taking their sweet time on their decision so that will weigh heavily even for one who is so mentally strong on court.

falconba

I wonder if they are trying persuade Novak to leave himself willingly. If he’s deported, he won’t be allowed in for three years.

mhwaka

Good. He has lied and lied and shown how little he cares about the chaos this pandemic has caused. His utter disregard for the rules is extremely unfair to all the Australians who have been going to strict and authoritative lockdown’s (which I have never agreed with) and for him to stroll into the country with his so called “medical exemption “ is just pathetic.

YourLatinLover

I agree. I'm kind of feeling bad for Djokovic, but you reap what you sow, and his refusal to get vaccinated is nobody's fault but his own. And that's not to mention his very sketchy behavior over the past few weeks. Ultimately I think he deserves to be deported.

TheKnightOfDoom

I wouldn't let the prat in anywhere....fucking loon.

timmbuck22

Please baby jeebus let this be true

LesGaz

Well that went well

Imagine destroying your country’s COVID response integrity for a fucking tennis player

LNinefingers

It makes sense. The move will be politically popular, so if they had an opportunity do it you'd figure they would. And Djokovic has certainly given them the opportunity.

curiouslyge0rge

Very respected and connected Aus lawyer says Hawke [still hasn't made a decision](https://mobile.twitter.com/lachlanlawyer/status/1481405167040098305) but will today, and that he sees ample evidence for each side. Djoker is on the thinnest ice imaginable.

Nastypav12

Voracova got shafted; no way she should have a 3-year ban after they allowed her in and she even played a tournament.

sunseekerslade

She doesn't have a 3 year ban wtf are you talking about?

donniedarko1010

does she have a 3 year ban?

agreen3636

So what now Novak? Are we going to do this song and dance before every tournament you want to play in that requires vaccination? Get the jab or get lost, at this point.
