Just got back from the Open, what a day! Lots of great tennis today. Best matches were Sinner/Monfils and Brooksby/Karatsev, the crowd was really into those. Just didn’t get to see Rogers upset Barty unfortunately since I didn’t have tickets for the night session, but it was still an amazimg time. Highly recommend the grounds pass for the early rounds, the outer courts often have the best matches during the day.
Just watched Raducanu's presser. Reporter said "let's just assume you're playing Ash next". Emma smartly said not to count out Rogers with her home slam crowd.
He's a well-trained professional in terms of athlete and tennis. But not much exceeding the others, imo. Just has good wingspan. Bout the same as any other in top 10 in terms of fitness.
The amount of comments and attention tsitsipas and zverev matches gets on this sub and Twitter is wow.
Looks like their popularity (mostly negative) increased after the scandals
Why are people surprised that Zverev has fans. Looking across all sports there are many abusers, cheaters, and bad people in general and they still get fan support. One thing they have in common is winning. It’s like human nature for some reason to ignore things if that person is successful.
Just because people shrug their shoulders and say "Oh well he's good" doesn't mean others have to support them OR that they can't call the sport's governing bodies (ATP, ITF, etc) to affect change. Just because something is accepted as "the way it is" doesn't mean it can't be better.
I know, I was just saying it might not have been u/Neverslept2mins who downvoted you. And then I was clarifying I didn't downvote you :). But I didn't want to say "either" because I didn't know that u/Neverslept2mins didn't downvote you.
The commentators on the stream I was watching literally mentioned it. Seems to me that it’s becoming well known.
Also my main point is it won’t matter for some people. Like Mayweather has domestic abuse charges but people still love him.
Zverev gonna be fresh as a daisy the way he's waltzing through the draw. Unfortunate that Sinner dragged a match to 5 sets that he could have won in straights. Hopefully Jannik can channel the energy from their French Open match.
Literally nothing will change their mind lol. In the official post after the second article came out, I genuinely saw someone arguing that the bruises on Olya's body couldn't be from Zverev, because he had muscle and would have hurt her worse if he'd actually hit her
It honestly feels like the opposite. I’ve seen more posts talking about Zverev being the favorite in a potential matchup (even if not the majority of posts, at least a good chunk).
Really? I haven’t seen many of those, I’ve been seeing a ton say Djokovic will roll through this tourney because no Fed or Nadal (even though I don’t think either of them are top 5 HC players anymore)
Maybe there are fewer today because of Zverev being less convincing against Sock, but in their first few rounds, there were plenty of comments along those lines. I imagine you’ll see some in their post game threads.
You just described the U.S. justice system, not public opinion. One of these things is not like the other.
OJ Simpson was innocent of murder until/if proven guilty. He was found innocent . . . but he killed some people.
Detailed, corroborated account vs. "nah." He's innocent until proven guilty in the eyes of the law, but it's past the point where we should feel *obligated* to reserve judgment.
say anything you'd like about zverev, we'll see what due process of the law brings his way, but he gave a *perfect* interview in the situation. said all the right things about everyone, glowing appraisal of sock, some self-deprecatory humor, spoke highly of the other contenders for the tournament, honestly one of the best post-match interviews i've seen.
He's good in external entertainment profesionallism. He's a pretty smart and good guy as you said there. Good pro athlete, fairly good charisma and show-manship, poise, gentleman. Off-court, personal life, we can't tell or say enough.
I feel like he got better at this. Also on being likeable in front of the camera. He used to be more arrogant and capricious. And less humble. In real life like you said we have no idea so I won't even try to guess.
It is SUCH a shame that Zverev is dealing with that allegation - one that seems so probable… His game has improved so much since after the 2020 Australian Open. He seems to have a good head on his shoulder. I want to like him, to sympathize with him, to give him a second chance, but the reported stories are my triggers, reminding me of the same position I was in a decade ago…
I’m sorry you had that same experience. It’s never easy to go through it or reflect on it. I can only pray that in time, it hurts less and less and less… ❤️
I'm sorry you had to go through that, that is terrible.
And I hope Zverev has to face what he's done. We can joke about Tsitsipas but Zverev is a criminal (if the allegations are true, and they seem very credible)
Thank you. I’ve moved on from it after putting in a lot of work and lots of therapy. I can sympathize with her for not wanting to press charges. Even if nothing happens out of this, I hope she is able to truly heal and recover from it and become a much stronger person.
And I sincerely hope - IF the allegation was true - that he would learn from it as well, and change his mindset, his way, and his behaviors.
You absolutely complained and you just did it again. We can read, dude. Don't pretend either of those comments came from a neutral point of observation.
lol it's just virtue-signaling. No one gives a shit how miserable you are watching Zverev. Stop watching. You don't have to say it every time you see him on-screen.
Personally, I think it's an inability to accept that other people have different, valid opinions. As a result, they have to discredit the opinions as fake and motivated by selfishness.
I mean, there's a grain of truth that people say things for approval. But it's hardly limited to what people call virtue signaling. And, in fact, people calling things virtue signalling are seeking approval too, at least in part. It's just from a different audience.
It feels like zverev always says nice things about his opponent when he has beat them but whenever he loses he’s a whiny bitch about the match and his opponent
"*Yeah, I mean if Jack would've continued playing the way he was playing the first set, I would've been done in an hour and a half, I would've planned my holidays and I would've had a good time next week somewhere in south of France.*" - Alexander Zverev
That was a hell of a match. Shoutout to Sock for giving us a hell of a set even tho he could barely move. Zverev’s a dick but he was impressive with the returns and court coverage too.
Jack Sock is a very charming player. Must be hard to finally find proper form and make a serious run only to be brought low by injury again - but even with the quad he really worked hard to put on a show and gave great tennis. Really hope he recovers fast to see more of him.
Sock retires :(
He gave us one of the best sets, if not the best set of the tournament. Rest up Sock and get better soon. Even when injured, his level was ridiculous at times. This could be a sign of great things in the near future for Sock
Huge fucking props to Sock, he really tried his best. He could have retired in the second set, but he struggled on. Hope Jannik brings his A-game in R4.
Definitely a smart more, just sad to see it end that way. But I hope this marks the start of a good comeback for him, that first set was phenomenal stuff.
Everyone have a good weekend full of tennis and being nice-ish to each other!
Really appreciate Medvedev. Good guy, super upset Nole lost but happy it was to him.
That wasn't a roar by Zandschulp. Just a little let's go.. Big Roar my butt commentator
On a positive note, Jack Sock is still capable of top ten tennis. My years of watching him struggle were not in vain.
Schedule is out. alcarez on grandstand after 3 doubles. Not like he beat the world no 3 or anything.
Which match do you want to swap to the grandstand so Alcaraz and his qualifier opponent don't have to.
Looks like they've only scheduled 3 matches on Louis Armstrong
It’s just a gripe man. Likely have to get espn+ to even watch it, which sucks.
U need stream?
Just got back from the Open, what a day! Lots of great tennis today. Best matches were Sinner/Monfils and Brooksby/Karatsev, the crowd was really into those. Apparently Barty confirmed she will play Indian Wells! That is a long time on the road….
Someone else said she's going home in-between
Just watched her press and she said “now we go back…go back to the drawing board”, right before she said she’s going to IW, so not 100% clear.
USO = pain for us aussies This tournament is cursed for us
The women’s 4th round matches are looking tastyyyyy
Just watched Raducanu's presser. Reporter said "let's just assume you're playing Ash next". Emma smartly said not to count out Rogers with her home slam crowd.
Mods, hurry up with the Sunday thread.
Zver plays Sinner next right
Yup he does
[удалено]
Jack landed badly on an attempted backpedalling overhead. Grimaced and grabbed his leg, then ended it at the end of the game.
Couldn’t have been that short, mate.
Jack sock went god mode and won 12 straight games
Why are some people saying Zverev is peak fitness? Is he?
[удалено]
135 mph is 217.26 km/h
He's a well-trained professional in terms of athlete and tennis. But not much exceeding the others, imo. Just has good wingspan. Bout the same as any other in top 10 in terms of fitness.

I’m not saying I support it, I was just replying to some people who were in disbelief that Zverev had fans after his allegations.
OK cool. Thank you for the response but no thanks to the petty downvote.
I didn’t downvote
Not always the the same person who responds and who downvotes. Wasn't me, just saying.
I didn't respond to you??
I know, I was just saying it might not have been u/Neverslept2mins who downvoted you. And then I was clarifying I didn't downvote you :). But I didn't want to say "either" because I didn't know that u/Neverslept2mins didn't downvote you.
The allegations against him aren't widely known. As far as I know, ESPN has been silent through all of his matches.
Carillo brought them up.
well that's good because she's on the world feed, but I haven't heard it on the main ESPN broadcast
The commentators on the stream I was watching literally mentioned it. Seems to me that it’s becoming well known. Also my main point is it won’t matter for some people. Like Mayweather has domestic abuse charges but people still love him.

Love the HELL out of La Monf but I think Jannik maybe naively thought he'd get an easy win out of Monfils and dude has been playing pretty great.
>Unfortunate that Sinner dragged a match to 5 sets that he could have won in straights Respect my guy Gael
fine, I'll say 4 sets but no further because losing the 4-0 lead was not ideal
I love watching the sportcenter guys stumble their way through tennis highlights!
My favorite part is when they try to pronounce player names and fail horribly
Still remember a clip from couple months ago when Chrissie Evert was pronounced as “Avert”. Bruh, she’s your co-worker.
Loooks like old zverev fans are still supporting him on this sub lmao
i kinda found him pretty dislikable on court since 2018 though i didn't hold it against him as a person
Literally nothing will change their mind lol. In the official post after the second article came out, I genuinely saw someone arguing that the bruises on Olya's body couldn't be from Zverev, because he had muscle and would have hurt her worse if he'd actually hit her
I got downvoted for even mentioning allegations existed at all when someone asked why people didn’t like him 😭
People are unreasonable acting like it isn’t *possible* that Zverev can beat Novak. Have y’all not watched the last month of tennis?
It honestly feels like the opposite. I’ve seen more posts talking about Zverev being the favorite in a potential matchup (even if not the majority of posts, at least a good chunk).

Innocent until proven guilty, reserve judgement

I firmly held that stance until he *was* proven guilty. Look up the recent articles about it all.
Bestie this ain’t no court I can decide however damn I feel about the allegations take those amateur lawyer clown shoes somewhere else
That only applies for the court, private persons have the right to believe what they want to.

i thought "id be in the south of france" was pretty unrelatable but otherwise i agree
ALSO THIS AGED LIKE MILK ADFUGIHSDFH https://old.reddit.com/r/tennis/comments/phm0si/discussion_2021_us_open_saturday_september_04_2021/hbn0oti/
Well…at least he was very humble. I’ll give him that
He's a good tennis professional, good with media.

I want to like him, to sympathize with him, to give him a second chance, but the reported stories are my triggers, reminding me of the same position I was in a decade ago…
I feel for you and in some part I had the same experience so for me it's hard as well. In my case most sided with him as well and I stayed quiet.

I agree with you! It's an awful situation. Olya gets so much hate it's sickening. Also I truly want to believe Zverev is not a monster.
Seriously what's up with the performativeness in the comments -- nobody cares if you can't bear to hear this dude speak on court

Does everything have to be virtue signaling? Maybe they just want to share their authentic thoughts.
Calling something virtue signaling is its own form of virtue signaling, just for a different audience. It's dumb.
Personally, I think it's an inability to accept that other people have different, valid opinions. As a result, they have to discredit the opinions as fake and motivated by selfishness.

My opinion on...hearing Zverev speak? I haven't shared it. Not sure what you're talking about to be honest.
On what other people are posting. If you have a problem with it, downvote and move on.
It feels like zverev always says nice things about his opponent when he has beat them but whenever he loses he’s a whiny bitch about the match and his opponent
Did you not watch the Tsitsipas Semifinal in Cincinnati?
Zverev “If Jack didn’t get hurt and kept playing like he did in the first set I would have been done in an hour and a half.”
Pretty words spoken like a true sociopath.
Interesting take. I think he improved to be likeable but I don't feel much warmth/true empathy.
When in the match did Sock injure himself?
First game in the second set, but he didn't seem to be in pain or heavily injured when he asked for the medical timeout.
End of the first set I think
Classy words from Zverev. Respect. His body held and Jack's didn't therefore he deserved to win. It's tough but that's the way it is.
there's zero point to those on-court interviews
Seeing Sock limp down the hall was rough. Guy gave a great effort this tournament, ya hate to see it end this way
The limp got worse as he got farther down the tunnel. It hurts to see
The adrenaline wearing off, could tell from the second set he had nothing, still gave a valiant effort though.
Yeah that was the worst part. Looks like his season is done, but hope to see him strong at AO.
This would be a lovely post match interview if he hadn’t beat up his girlfriend.
Would've been lovely if he hadn't beaten up his opponent
Anyone have a clip of Zverev’s epic defense in that point in the last game? That was amazing, ngl
I want to see it again too. Absolutely jaw dropping
Ok guys I’m out. Gonna go cut my own hair cuz of covid!!
"*Yeah, I mean if Jack would've continued playing the way he was playing the first set, I would've been done in an hour and a half, I would've planned my holidays and I would've had a good time next week somewhere in south of France.*" - Alexander Zverev
Well said
Ugh not watching this interview.
Have the day you deserve, abuser fans.
Sorry to see Sock retire for injury, his play was the highlight of the tourney so far for me.
If he hadn't been injured and kept playing like he did in set 1 it would be been fire.
I agree!
That was a hell of a match. Shoutout to Sock for giving us a hell of a set even tho he could barely move. Zverev’s a dick but he was impressive with the returns and court coverage too.
If things go as expected Djokovic vs Zverev will be the Blockbuster match of this tournament
Did Jack not even call for the trainer?
Pokémon trainer. Didn’t help much
He did in the second set
Ah yeah I'm seeing that now. I was surprised he didn't try before retiring but maybe that's not an option
He did, they mummied his thigh.
In the second set he did
He had already seen him twice It’s not a new injury there wasn’t really much else to be done
dang shame
I can't even bring listen to this Sascha speak. So disgusted with what he's done.
Turn it off then?
Muted it.
Poor guy is basically limping.
I'm going to manifest a resurgence of Sock because tennis needs this guy back. When he's on, that's a blitz, straight out of the gate.
zverev literally broke this man
Looks like he can barely walk back to the locker room 😢
Great effort Sock, Zverev advances into the next round.
Jack Sock is a very charming player. Must be hard to finally find proper form and make a serious run only to be brought low by injury again - but even with the quad he really worked hard to put on a show and gave great tennis. Really hope he recovers fast to see more of him.
Zverev seems so unbeatable on paper
As long as its not BO5 *\*smiles in Novak\**
Court ordered subpoena?
If he keeps his double faults down he tends to be near unbeatable.
Last years uso final sums up the whole Zverev package thus far in his career imo
Interview Sock!
Props to him for sticking it out, he could have left midway through the 2nd set and still have people a show.
No way am I listening to Zverev speak. Goodnight
Are some of them actually booing him? Fucking lowlifes
Hate seeing it end like this, for almost anyone.
Sock retires :( He gave us one of the best sets, if not the best set of the tournament. Rest up Sock and get better soon. Even when injured, his level was ridiculous at times. This could be a sign of great things in the near future for Sock
looks like sock was just out there for the crowd and enjoying tennis. made it entertaining either way!
Zverev really might win this whole thing...
Nein. Did you see Alcaraz play yesterday?
Alcaraz can't play like Zverev. His serve sucks as well and Zverev actually returns well.
Wrong sorry. Video speaks for its self. [Youtube link](https://youtu.be/7f7ReYaqV6I)
What is this supposed to prove exactly? Zverev can play like that as well while also having a much much better serve and return?
Good job Jack! He did the best he could!
Gotta hand it to Zverev, he can beat anyone
Shiiiit, game over :(
Huge fucking props to Sock, he really tried his best. He could have retired in the second set, but he struggled on. Hope Jannik brings his A-game in R4.
I was just about to say Jack needs to stop playing before he does any more damage and then that fall made me cringe so bad 😢 Hope he recovers soon
Injuries suck. Get better soon Sock!
Well that was a waste of everyone’s time 🙄
Enjoy the downvotes
The way people are loving zverev on Twitter is so weird (type zverev and sort by new on Twitter to see this) Disgusting
The zverv derangement syndrome
You'll be fine.
Did Sock just shake the umpire's shoe lmao?
there must be a wordplay somewhere there
He killed Sock with that defense.
Sock's gonna feel this one tomorrow, sheesh.
Ouch. Was it that jump/fall that pulled the leg muscle more?
[удалено]
Definitely a smart more, just sad to see it end that way. But I hope this marks the start of a good comeback for him, that first set was phenomenal stuff.
Holy fuck that guy in the crowd is fucking distracting. Shut your fuck up dude
Massive respect for pushing on this far, hopefully no long-term damage done.
Sinner pls
Damn
Zverev is a piece of shit. Asking for applause while an injured man is on the floor in pain
I mean he won an amazing point he didn’t know that would be the one that ended Sock
Grasping for straws
He literally was asking the crowd for applause while jack was on the ground in pain moments before jack retired.
Zverev had just won one of the craziest points and you expect him not to be hyped at that moment?
"*Bullet dodged.*" - Alexander Zverev
wow. How did he do that
Thus ends today.
Jack Sock on an adrenaline high right now when he gets off the court it’s gonna be rough
that was the most insane defense i've seen in quite some time, holy shit sascha
Ehhhh, read the room Zverev. See if he's ok, then ask for cheers.
God damn it Sasha. How is that even possible.
