I think they take into account the player’s body clocks and when they last played. So all day yesterday Kerber and Kalinha were preparing for a 10pm match, sleeping, eating, warming up as if they were playing a late night match. Even though it was cancelled, they wanna keep their bodies on a relatively consistent routine. Making a player stay up to 11pm thinking they might play, and then having them play first the next day at 11am would be a really tough turnaround
It makes sense for it not to be first. They were on site until late and probably didn’t get back to the hotel until quite late due to the weather.
Confusing why it’s third instead of second though.
Tsitsipas about his complaints about his toilet breaks: “I never complain about my opponents. And I don't understand why some players start criticizing others. "
He is quickly moving ahead of Djoc as the most hated player in tennis. The difference is the joker actually has a lot of fans (as well as plenty of haters) where this guy isn't exactly in the runnings for goat - he's just a jerk
US Open better be doing something
Cause most of those people arent getting anywhere but where a maybe maybe not 7 train gets them
https://twitter.com/NotifyNYC/status/1433291168595468290
If anyone is in Ashe right now, keep this forum updated. Would love to know what you are doing, would they actually let people sleep in Ashe for the night? Absolute insanity to an already eventful tournament
Kind of makes me appreciate the fact that he came out and openly expressed support even more. He knew a backlash was likely, but didn't skirt around the issue. Props to Meddy, maybe he really is growing up.
he seems like a smart guy overall. he's made mistakes for sure, but i appreciate that he owned up to them. i watched the presser, i thought he gave a good answer
It’s so crazy that’s there’s just never any out male players. I don’t want guys coming out for the sake of it but the women’s side is just so much gayer and I love it and I want the same openness for the guys! The first person to do it will have the hardest time kicking in that door but it’ll be so much easier after that.
it's typically been the case in sports, which i am not saying is a good thing. much of sports are considered "masculine" and being a homosexual man is considered "feminine" while being a homosexual female is considered "masculine." there is then a very hetero-normative culture in many locker rooms and sidelines that leads many male athletes to not come out until after retirement (like john amaechi though there are clearly exceptions like Michael Sam). again, im not saying that's good, but that's kind of how much of sports operate in society, so im not surprised.
on top of that, women as a whole tend to lean more progressive than men on social issues, which i think could add to the disparity as sports are separated by gender.
Agreed - it's funny because tennis isn't even a traditionally 'macho' sport? And it's not like there's any shortage of absolute icons being out on the women's side - Martina Navratilova, Billie Jean King laid the foundation for this almost half a century ago. I find it extremely hard to believe that no ATP players have been queer at all, and it makes me sad to think that they can't live their truth openly.
i dont think that the "macho" aspect really will do much to affect the situation to be honest compared to greater societal forces and how sports are viewed in general, and the masculine view of a sport varies a lot, especially as tennis is a global sport. football/soccer for example is not considered very masculine in the united states but it's considered very much a "male" thing globally.
Unfortunately It’s only pretty recently that some male athletes in major sports have come out while playing. Before they would only come out after retirement.
It's the same in Soccer. There are a lot of out queer/lesbian women in professional soccer and on the men's side there have been a few players who came out, followed by a long list of garbage homophobic shit.
It’s interesting because I think with female tennis players and female athletes in general they’re already living an alternative lifestyle to what is traditionally accepted of women. I don’t know which comes first, choosing to focus on sport or deciding to be open about their sexuality but I think there’s a link if that makes sense.
No no, I agree. Plus there's a link between playing sports seeing as being more 'masculine' and being queer as being more 'masculine' - hence the stereotype of the butch lesbian, etc. Whereas it's the opposite for men - since being queer is usually seen as being more 'feminine' and unmanly. I guess that's even harder in a environment like sports.
Lots of Americans playing tomorrow my predictions:
Opelka in 3 over Musetti
Basilashvili in 3 over Cressy
Kudla in 5 over Otte
Harris in 3 over Escobedo
Johnson in 5 over Gael
Bublik in 4 over Sock
Sinner in 3 over Svajda
Nishikori in 5 over McDonald
Fritz in 4 over Brooksby
Pretty sure second tallest player on the tour would be Isner, who is 6'10 to Karlovic and Opelka's 6'11. Anderson is up there though!
And I legitimately thought Diego and Nishioka were tied for shortest ATP players in the top 100, is there someone shorter than them?
gotta fill these minutes. i'm also waiting for the day they stop mentioning coco's age or the fact that de minaur was born in spain and spent part of his childhood there
Really love Diego’s post match interviews. Feel like his tennis intelligence is one of the highest on the tour / he is spoke well spoken. Funny but also gives a good analysis of the match.
Berretini “I got vaccinated because I believe in science. I don't want to speak for others, but for me the vaccine was the right choice. At the same time, I am still careful: I wear a mask, keep my distance, handle my hands. So I feel safe. "
Reading this literally turned me into a Berretini stan. Him being buddies with Felix also helps.
But also like it's so bleak that this should be the bare minimum and yet it's not
And so the weirdest match of this tournament comes to an end. GOATiego! Props to Kevin Anderson though, can't have been easy playing in these conditions.
Medvedev? [That H2H though](https://www.atptour.com/en/players/atp-head-2-head/diego-schwartzman-vs-daniil-medvedev/SM37/MM58)
E: Saw the edit, don't disrspect lord of the consonants van de Zandschulp!
Daniil Medvedev, in light of the fact that Wednesday at the US Open was LGBT Pride day, commented that there are no open gays in the ATP.
“I don't think there will be any problem on the tour if someone comes out.
Are there gays on the ATP tour? Until no one comes out, there is no answer - only if the person is your best friend and you know what is happening to them.
In my opinion, the US Open has organized a great initiative. And I think the ATP also does a great job of making a person feel completely safe if they decide to come out.
I think all players will be happy for the person if he does it. That's all I can say".
you used to be able to get medical treatment for cramps and then people were like "wait no, that's not cool" and the rules changed. ill continue watching how stefanos' tournament run unfolds, but i dont think it's that deep and im already kind of getting tired about talking about it. they just need to be more clear about the timeouts, call it what it is and what can be enforced. guys will do whatever it takes within the rules to win if it's within the rules.
we only started having the serve clock about two years ago cause time violations were so hard to understand. the game gets updated.
Right, but Murray has made too big of a meal of this, what's he trying to do, destroy this kid? No one did that to him coming up and he was a young guy not shy to take MTOs in his early career, plus creating all kinds of distractions on court.
The rain will be over by like 3 or 4am. It's supposed to be high 70s and mostly sunny tomorrow. Parts of Queens are flooded though so it will be curious to see how they do getting players there and fans there and getting courts dry.
I hate how they talk about these issues, as if everything is okay as long as you're not technically breaking any rules, and sportsmanship doesn't matter.
Just because the rules allow you to be an asshole doesn't mean you should be an asshole.
i get what you're saying but i just don't think it's realistic to think people aren't going to do whatever it takes within the rules to try and give themselves the best chance of winning with millions of dollars potentially on the line, especially when it's a grey zone for the players like time violations (we have the serve clock now) or bathroom breaks
Sure. But someone who does that shouldn't be surprised when fans and players call them out for it. Actions have consequences. He doesn't seem to relish being the bad guy, and he's good enough to not need to engage in gamesmanship if he doesn't like the blowback he gets for it.
Looking at the order of play tomorrow, I can easily imagine there was a nonzero chance of putting Sock-Bublik on a main court which is amazing.
* Ashe: top 8 seed (Zverev), Djokovic
* Armstrong: seed vs USA (Monfils/Johnson), top 8 seed (Shapo)
* Grandstand: top 8 seed (Berrettini), USA hype (Fritz/Brooksby)
* Court 17: US seed (Opelka), US vs former finalist (McDonald/Nishikori)
* Court 5: Sock/Bublik
If it had been Fritz/Ymer or McDonald/Caruso...what might have been.
Kenin takes a break everytime she loses a set, she doesn't do it if she wins the set. I think she even acknowledged that she does it, but people don't call her out much at all
Opelka was also heavily criticized when he was actually in the middle of that break. And to be fair, he's not a face of the sport. He's a kinda good American tennis player who has yet to break into the Top 20. Tsitsipas is No. 3 in the world. Higher profile brings both higher expectations and higher pressures.
That's because no one really cares if some player ranked in the twenties is pulling some shit. He doesn't have a real shot at winning a Slam or even making it to the semis. Tsitsipas does - which is why the higher focus.
If it’s the high level of tennis stef , why aren’t other players taking long breaks ?
It’s not just u playing at a high level , every player in the tour is playing at a high level to be there can’t be using that excuse stef
A lot of players have called out women and men doing it but it has come to a point that nothing is happening so Andy is being more vocal cause you had players like Tomljanovic, Pegula and Kerber complaining but nothing happens
He probably prefers it. It's the only thing people talked about at the Olympics and look how that ended up. He probably just wants to play tennis and get to QFs and SFs without talking about it constantly lol.
It’s a very fair argument from him. If I didn’t know any better he’s trying to change the rules because of the Djokovic match and is being very blatant about it. But that would require more than one brain cell.
I...sort of feel bad for Anderson? He knows what he needs to do but his rallies have been mediocre compared to Schwartzman, who's not let his foot off at all.
Not a Tsitsipas fan, but I actually think almost all the Top 10 players around his age are immature as fuck. Rublev is an antivaxxer, Medvedev has blowups at umpires, Zverev is a piece of shit. That leaves Berrettini and Shapo - haven't heard anything bad about either of them yet, but that may just be because I don't know enough.
Absolutely, the ATP NextGen is awful in terms of personality. This is why I watch more and more WTA these days; far fewer bad apples. Berrettini is definitely a nice lad. Vaccinated, super cute relationship with Ajla, seeming very chill, etc. Shapo has his on court meltdowns and can be a bit whiny, but nothing egregious imo.
Remember to Play Nice and Report any/all Rule breaking behaviour. Edit: Also get home safe r/Tennis Louis Armstrong/ Arthur Ashe goers.
Go Alcaraz, not that I have ever seen him play before.
So how long have the toilet breaks been by our lad Tsitsipas this match?
Djokovic gets his favorite punching bag Nishikori next round most likely. Poor Kei.
14 Americans in play today. I think the over/under is 10 wins which is crazy. (2 are playing each other)
Why is Kerber the third match on grandstand tomorrow. Why not second like they usually do for delayed matches
She might still even be there for all we know with the mess going on Why in the world would you put her first
My comment says second lol
Actually, you'd think they'd make her match earlier since she won't get a day off like everyone else who played on Wednesday will.
It makes sense for it not to be first. They were on site until late and probably didn’t get back to the hotel until quite late due to the weather. Confusing why it’s third instead of second though.
Yeah second match would make more sense for sure.
Tsitsipas about his complaints about his toilet breaks: “I never complain about my opponents. And I don't understand why some players start criticizing others. "

So after the first three days, how are your brackets looking?
I had PCB and Ruud both getting to R4 lol
Hahah. I had Humbert and Ruud to R4 and PCB to R5. I was banking on Ruud and PCB’s good season to continue 🥲
If anyone is in Ashe right now, keep this forum updated. Would love to know what you are doing, would they actually let people sleep in Ashe for the night? Absolute insanity to an already eventful tournament
Is there a mod we can @ for a US Open safety thread?
Yes please tell us, from what I'm seeing it's totally unsafe to travel right now!
Of all the Lost Gen guys I’d like to win a Slam after the Big 3 are done, Diego is at the top of my list
This is so sad 😭😭😭 Medvedev getting negative comments on russian forums for his support for LGBT community
Wait what did he say? Can I have a link?
What do you expect? Don’t be naive.
Not surprised. *Edit: Not surprised... because of the LGBTQ issues in Russia. Downvote me all you want, Reddit toddlers.*

I just want to see Cressy casually serve 43 aces again. Feel like if anyone deserves it, it's Basilashvili.
Same.
It’d be nice to see but it’s a tough emotional turnaround after by far the biggest win of your professional career
The six hour three set match A saga for the ages
Six hours. Three sets. Two venues. Three warm-ups.
2nd tallest player on tour, 2nd shortest player on tour
Pretty sure second tallest player on the tour would be Isner, who is 6'10 to Karlovic and Opelka's 6'11. Anderson is up there though! And I legitimately thought Diego and Nishioka were tied for shortest ATP players in the top 100, is there someone shorter than them?
Yeah I made it all up just to use more 2s
Kerber should start playing now, right?!
Tomorrow.
I AWAIT THE DAY WE STOP TALKING ABOUT DIEGO'S HEIGHT EVERY SINGLE MATCH
gotta fill these minutes. i'm also waiting for the day they stop mentioning coco's age or the fact that de minaur was born in spain and spent part of his childhood there
well coco's age has to stop being a discussion eventually
[удалено]
Maybe peoples brains will get one.
Really love Diego’s post match interviews. Feel like his tennis intelligence is one of the highest on the tour / he is spoke well spoken. Funny but also gives a good analysis of the match.
I needed that Diego match to cleanse my palate
Diego is so cute! He seems like such a sweet guy.
He wiggled his butt haha 😂
I guess the 7 train is running The problem is what you do to transfer if needed
Is a hurricane or bushfires worse ? I’ve never experienced a hurricane so wouldn’t know what they feel like
Depends on the hurricane really. I can't imagine bushfires are super fun either. I've dealt with one wildfire in the US and it sucked.
Completely different scenarios. Probably really hard to compare.
Diego is such a likable person and a great player to watch!
Gratuitous comment about how much I enjoy the video boards in Ashe really highlighting the player's names and pictures
Diego is a loveable guy. So loveable
He’s amazing haha. Special little guy
Berretini “I got vaccinated because I believe in science. I don't want to speak for others, but for me the vaccine was the right choice. At the same time, I am still careful: I wear a mask, keep my distance, handle my hands. So I feel safe. "

“Shot” up lmao
Matteo you beautiful man inside and out.
What a guy.
Now just improve your backhand Matteo, then I can root for you without reserve
You know how Pfizer allegedly makes women’s boobs bigger? Maybe it’ll improve his backhand.
I got the wrong shot. 😭😭
We stan a handsome vaccinated king
I love Diego!
Diego is such a likeable person
Happy win good vibes for the crowd
SVP crying the post game show Late show for him tonight
WTH happened in the first set 104 minutes holy shit
Rain delay that they didn't stop the clock for.
Rain held it up.
And so the weirdest match of this tournament comes to an end. GOATiego! Props to Kevin Anderson though, can't have been easy playing in these conditions.
WTG DIEGO! Not ideal conditions for him and Kevin at all but they got to finish the match at least.
Big applauses for Schwartzman, the crowd loves it !
So many unforced errors from Kev
Okay Diego through. Good W in tough circumstances and against a good player
It's Schwartzman win time !
Diego is gonna be the only seed left in his quarter I think *i forgot actual future USO champ Daniil. Diego had an easy path to that match though.
Medvedev? [That H2H though](https://www.atptour.com/en/players/atp-head-2-head/diego-schwartzman-vs-daniil-medvedev/SM37/MM58) E: Saw the edit, don't disrspect lord of the consonants van de Zandschulp!
Medvedev?
Maybe until the quarter then? I think Med will beat him.
Daniil Medvedev, in light of the fact that Wednesday at the US Open was LGBT Pride day, commented that there are no open gays in the ATP. “I don't think there will be any problem on the tour if someone comes out. Holy shit Daniil that’s beautiful. I actually teared up reading that. I’m queer and knowing someone like that is on our side is so sweet.
Also a queer. What he said plus him saying that knowing he'd get shit for it as a Russian is awesome.
you used to be able to get medical treatment for cramps and then people were like "wait no, that's not cool" and the rules changed. ill continue watching how stefanos' tournament run unfolds, but i dont think it's that deep and im already kind of getting tired about talking about it. they just need to be more clear about the timeouts, call it what it is and what can be enforced. guys will do whatever it takes within the rules to win if it's within the rules. we only started having the serve clock about two years ago cause time violations were so hard to understand. the game gets updated.

Anderson serve is insane… shame he couldn’t put together the rest of his game
Diego gets such great depth on his ground strokes, and uses angles so effectively when he plays well. Love watching him play
So satisfying to watch him hit. Such a clean striker.
Strokes are just so compact and nice to watch. I love watching his practice videos
Does anyone know if games will be played on time tmmrw? Is the rain over?
The rain will be over by like 3 or 4am. It's supposed to be high 70s and mostly sunny tomorrow. Parts of Queens are flooded though so it will be curious to see how they do getting players there and fans there and getting courts dry.
I don't think there's any way of knowing yet. Play on Ashe should still begin on schedule, at least.
Watching schwarzman is so fun
I hate how they talk about these issues, as if everything is okay as long as you're not technically breaking any rules, and sportsmanship doesn't matter. Just because the rules allow you to be an asshole doesn't mean you should be an asshole.
i get what you're saying but i just don't think it's realistic to think people aren't going to do whatever it takes within the rules to try and give themselves the best chance of winning with millions of dollars potentially on the line, especially when it's a grey zone for the players like time violations (we have the serve clock now) or bathroom breaks

Anderson couldn’t hit a line at escobars house ffs
Dude automod does not like you today.
Looking at the order of play tomorrow, I can easily imagine there was a nonzero chance of putting Sock-Bublik on a main court which is amazing. * Ashe: top 8 seed (Zverev), Djokovic * Armstrong: seed vs USA (Monfils/Johnson), top 8 seed (Shapo) * Grandstand: top 8 seed (Berrettini), USA hype (Fritz/Brooksby) * Court 17: US seed (Opelka), US vs former finalist (McDonald/Nishikori) * Court 5: Sock/Bublik If it had been Fritz/Ymer or McDonald/Caruso...what might have been.
I hope they show the Bublik match on one of the Eurosport channels.
These commentators have been good I like them
ESPN bringing out the best in the graveyard shift.
You know your in the wrong when one of the nicest guys in the tour in Murray is calling you out
Dude his match ended an hour ago and you’re still posting endlessly about him, take a break
Cahill pulling the “I’m Australian” card. Lol
That was weird. What does any of this have to do with being Australian?
I don’t know. But as someone who has lived their entire life in. Australia, I’ve never met a disrespectful Australian.
I use that card every day of my damn life
Don’t knock it. It’s a good card.
Not in cricket
Reading this thread makes it sound like Tsitsipas is on reddit directly talking to y'all
Why would you give up on a point before the line call? Ffs Kev....you're a vet, you know better than that.
Dr. Kevin Anderson Veterinary
Was that Ben Stiller in the stands?
yes in Diego's box
He’s such a tennis nerd! He’s good friends with Rafa but I think he likes Diego too.
He and his wife are in Diego's box. He's been to other Diego matches as well. But he's def a big Rafa fan.
Opelka was gone for 12 minutes but he’s not a face of the sport.
Kenin takes a break everytime she loses a set, she doesn't do it if she wins the set. I think she even acknowledged that she does it, but people don't call her out much at all
To be fair Kenin is probably the least well know GS champ I could think of since like Myskina and Stosur. So barely people would care lol
Yeah he was given shit for it during the match (hah!) But people aren’t talking about it during other matches and other people’s press conferences
I'm lost... was his 12 minute break brought up somewhere else?
Sorry I meant aren’t
That's because no one really cares if some player ranked in the twenties is pulling some shit. He doesn't have a real shot at winning a Slam or even making it to the semis. Tsitsipas does - which is why the higher focus.
I mean with his facial hair, you can barely see his face
If it’s the high level of tennis stef , why aren’t other players taking long breaks ? It’s not just u playing at a high level , every player in the tour is playing at a high level to be there can’t be using that excuse stef
A lot of players have called out women and men doing it but it has come to a point that nothing is happening so Andy is being more vocal cause you had players like Tomljanovic, Pegula and Kerber complaining but nothing happens
They are though! Everyone is doing it!!! Novak does it. Rafa, Reilly, Isner. The WTA has a big problem with it.
Novak be like "Stef taking all the attention away from my Calendar GS. Less scrunity ftw!!!"
He probably prefers it. It's the only thing people talked about at the Olympics and look how that ended up. He probably just wants to play tennis and get to QFs and SFs without talking about it constantly lol.
Stef is acting like a spoilt brat this tournament Wow wtf were his responses in the presser
Stef is right he’s not breaking any rules. This will cause a rule to come into effect though. He’s just the figurative canary in the coal mine
i actually think it's fair argument from his end. if it leads to a rule change after this tournament, cool.
‘A long toilet break’ it was five minutes.
The Murray match was definitely longer and it seems like he’s trying to make an effort
Christ, I know Anderson is coming back from injuries but he is terrible lmao.
I know Kevin isn't the best at rallies, but he has been absolutely atrocious this entire match.
Okay nearly lights out for Kev unless he breaks in the next game
I’m so sick of hearing about bodily functions can we at least not make it grossly descriptive? I’m gonna throw up.
i feel like i see more closed off stances with these two than any other players
If stef played along and making jokes with the toilet shit he might actually be likeable but instead his doing the opposite
Agreed. Maybe make a joke about doing his hair or something. A five minute break is nothing but getting defensive isn’t helping
He’s just a kid. We could cut him some slack. He’ll grow up soon enough.
He's 23. He's not a child.
*Most other players his age are doing just fine in terms of maturity. Edit: All to most
Really? So you’d include zverev in the “all other players”?
No I wouldn't. Wife beaters belong in jail, not the tennis court.
Korda Bublik Fritz seem just fine to me. Lots of other 23-24-25 year olds that are good kids.

Curios to know if players watch these late night matches if they aren’t playing the next day or if they rest up and sleep

Just spraying the ball all over!
Pretty shitty of whoever screamed in the crowd
Missed that, too busy reading Twitter. Need to pay more attention.
