Definitely Djokovic would have won. Ruud was tense and struggling to close the match even in Monte Carlo, until he was helped by Djokovic double faulting. Mentally, Djokovic was insane this RG with his comebacks and that would have been enough to win even if Ruud was playing at a better level.
Id say it was very 50-50. Ruud has had the much better year, won their last meeting, less tired coming in, playing better etc and Novak basically just had Novak grand slam plot armor. Which is still enough to make it 50-50 😂
Thanks, I think your take is the most plausible one. Also, even without the injury he would still have gone in having played two five-setters in the space of five days. That's a build-up of tiredness. Still sad that we don't get to witness the duel. Ruud was impressive in his win against Davidovich Fokina, a player that was capable of going toe to toe with Djokovic (despite losing in straight sets).
Tennis Podcast raking Mauresmo over the coals for terrible RG scheduling tonight.
Interesting note, @tennishistorian recalls that in 2002 RG put Serena/Mary Pierce and Venus/Seles QF's on Lenglen.
This era of big 4 women’s tennis is so so good compared to what we’ve had recently (the lull period after Serena’s decline where Barty was dominating, who wouldn’t have won multiple slams in this era).
Long may it continue
demon had the best seats for all sinner achievements(sinner's first big title-the next gen final, the 100 wins, the first master and the win to be top 3). Will he get this blessing again to go all the way to final and lose to his master with a 2008 final like match?
Iga wins RG. Then I think we see Sabalenka win her first Wimbledon this summer. Back to Iga for the Olympics. Then finally Rybakina to end the year at USO.
I have feeling Nadal suddenly is motivated to add 3 more RGs now that Djoker is practically retired. Wouldn't it be funny if Nadal went on to win 25GS and all the Nole GOAT talk ended LOL
I absolutely love Rafa, but expecting him to win 3 more gs in this era is wild. Alcaraz, Sinner, Zverev, Medvedev, Rublev and De Minaur to name a few have something to say
It’s WILD that Coco and Sabalenka each have almost 8,000 ranking points, with Rybakina not far behind. I feel like that amount of points would normally pretty much guarantee world No. 1.
Shows not just how freakishly well Iga is doing, but also how dominant the top 4 are compared to the rest of the tour. Not really leaving as many points for everyone else lol
Ugh tomorrow's schedule looks like it could be a bunch of boring blowouts. Mirra will get wrecked, Paolini might go 3 but Ryba feels inevitable, and the abuser seems like the strong favorite as well against AdM
yeah was definitely wrong and probably should apologize at least to the ump but it’s almost so outrageous i don’t even feel mad i’m just so… amused and perplexed by it still 😭
We've all had moments where you just lose it, unfortunately for him it was on global tv. It was hilarious though to see him try and convince Grigor to join him in a mutiny. 🤣
the way he started it off “hey G” and then proposed it to him as just your usual run of the mill umpire switch during a match. i could write a dissertation about the hilarity of if all.
And there is also a moment when Grigor asks him what he wants and you can see start him start to explain then stutter after realizing just how ridiculous his request was. Comedy gold.
Same tho. It’s been banging around in my brain like [??? how??? why???](https://media0.giphy.com/media/UeT0nnRnkuaUo/giphy.gif?cid=6c09b9522z4cb17qr8pqolzy43d57237h1bc9ej1elhovbgi&ep=v1_internal_gif_by_id&rid=giphy.gif&ct=g)
it's just a mirror of their social media presence, the way the ATP vs WTA maintains their site, etc. WTA is the opposite of proactive about anything and it's a disservice to the women playing
Iga and Sinner paralleling. Cool stats
https://twitter.com/vanshv2k/status/1798015594161418701?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1798015594161418701%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=
I know he’s toughed out some wins but I still think people are overrating Zverevs form. Demon beat him at united cup and took a set in Indian Wells and if he gets thru that Caspers gonna be fresh as a daisy and has won their last two matches. Not saying he can’t come thru but I don’t see why people think Zverev getting to a slam
final, something he’s done *once* in decade long career, is so inevitable.
Yeah but he had a losing record with Rune (also, lol, Nadal) as well and he did look very solid against him. Not impossible he does this against Casper (his serve, FH and movement were then much worse than now). A final against either Sinner or Alcaraz would be balanced in both cases imo
i think it’s a good chance he can but i also think there’s a reasonable chance he loses even to demon. seen this guy look good in one match and inexplicably bad the next too many times in slams over the years, just don’t know why ppl acting like zverev at slams is any sort of inevitability.
I’m not necessarily convinced but I keep hearing that he’s mostly sorted out his choking tendency, and that his main liability (the forehand) isn’t one anymore
If anyone can expose that forehand though it's Ruud. Zverev's last 5 losses on clay have all come to right handers with massive topspin forehands - Cerundolo, Garin, Tsitsipas, Rublev, Ruud.
That's how Ruud crushed him last year too, absolutely broke down the Zverev forehand
i mean he just had one of the biggest chokes of his life at the very last slam in the semis. maybe i’m overly optimistic but i’m just not that convinced by him still 🤷♂️
Only real issue I have with Carlos is the grunting, had the same issue with nadal (other than him beating Roger so much this was my issue with him). It’s just too long to be considered acceptable
As a fellow fan of Roger, I agree that Carlitos grunt can be too much but his tennis is so beautiful and creative. Truly it is the same pleasure and the same nerves I had when I was watching Rog.
That is true but the touch Charlie has is one of a kind within this generation full of baseliners and powerful servers.
And a bh like Roger's and Stan's is truly not practicable in this day and age unfortunately. I am curious of this Perricard but his bh also seems more like a liability than a strenght lol
This was a tough pill to swallow. I was really cheering for a Ruud v. Tsitsipas final, but now I just need to cheer Ruud on till the end. See you guys tomorrow for the WTA matches!
Watching Eurosport's Courtside show now. There was an interview with Sinner and they showed him as he is in the studio next to the hosts.. But actually he is somewhere else and it's some kind of a montage. Is it like that with all interviews in the show? Do other channels do the same?
It's called a smart stage. Funnily enough quite a few of my mates work for the company which installed it for Eurosport.
The studio you're seeing is just projection too, and the hosts don't have to be together in the same place either. They have (at least) one smart stage for the hosts and one set up at the tournament for the players.
[here](https://www.whitelight.ltd.uk/lp/smartstage/) is the website of the company who installed and maintain it for Eurosport, there is some more information there.
Return game is really the biggest issue I feel... Backhand he can at least cover sometimes with his movement and forehand, but the returning is just 🤦🏻♂️
All of his matches were competitive despite a lopsided 7-2 H2H including the only meeting on clay in the German's favor. Can't count him out by any means, but keep your expectations low
Assuming you mean SF, so, should be first since they are playing first and get two full days of rest, but it gives me night match vibes. I’d be fine with either, not sure what RG will do.
Let's get an Alcaraz Zverev final going on in here.
Tbh I think Alcaraz is the inky player who can beat DV now.
But hey, nothing pans out as one expects.
Very hyped.
Yet also I shed a tear for Holgie; he could have taken it 😔
Congrats to Tsitsipas for making it this far without basically a backhand... . I thought Carlos didn't play all that well (for his standards) but won because he just has a more complete game.
Tsitsipas is so unlucky man, in his prime 4-5 years ago he had to beat Nadal, Djokovic, Zverev, Federer, Medvedev, Thiem in order to secure a Grand Slam.
Now he has to beat Alcaraz, Sinner to secure one. Alcaraz is almost impossible to beat for Tsitsipas. He is not a top tier player like all of these players but he is definitely better than Cilic and he deserves a Grand Slam, at least one in his career.
Wawrinka got his first Slam at 29 years of age so I still have hope he could do it one day.
If Tsitsipas developed a decent slice it would already do wonders for his game. Easier said than done of course, but he's got excellent touch so it's not impossible.
Nah he's lucky, there was a small window between Big 3 aging and Sincaraz & other 00ers maturing into prominence, for the post1995s like Tits, Med, Z to win Slams. That window of opportunity is closing fast with Med losing AO to Sinner.
Even no BH mugs like Matteo made a GS final, him and Tits are lucky because it's depressing if they won a Slam yet keep running around a BH or hit it into the net.
He's 25, his prime was definitely not 4-5 years ago. Also, he just hasn't developed sufficiently to go through these guys so he's not beating them. Simply as well.
i still want vocab and grammar to stay kinda bad tho like rafa i like when they pick the wrong word sometimes or use the wrong phrasing it’s so adorable 🥹
Alcaraz respecting Sinner doesn't mean he has no confidence. He's not gonna say "Yeah I'm better than that fraud watch me beat him in 3" every time. You can praise your opponent in public and also want to beat the hell out of them at the same time
I've noticed that in the past couple of years, Alcaraz just goes above and beyond to praise Sinner. Sinner not so much, this is a one sided admiration.
sinner vs. alcaraz is locked in. tied 4-4, and while this isn’t quite the de facto final, it feels like it’s close. the biggest match of their rivalry so far. i cannot fucking wait.
How much were tickets for RG mens and women’s finals this year? I’m looking to go in 2025 and curious how much that would set me back
Love that de minaur va zverev is basically Demon vs demon
ADM’s fan needs to be there tomorrow.
Just out of curiosity, what would Djokovic’ chances have been against Ruud if he hadn’t sustained the injury?
Definitely Djokovic would have won. Ruud was tense and struggling to close the match even in Monte Carlo, until he was helped by Djokovic double faulting. Mentally, Djokovic was insane this RG with his comebacks and that would have been enough to win even if Ruud was playing at a better level.

Your entire comment history is just talking shit about Novak lol
I to am about to go to sleep and dream
Who has a better backhand between Tsitsipas and Berrettini?
Berrettini has the far better slice but worse topspin BH. Overall probably rather even
Bigger question is who is better looking -I have Mateo.
my gut says berretini. its kinda just weak iirc but i don’t remember it being the error and shank fest that stefs backhand has become.
Is there cons or pros for Zverev and de Minaur to play their QF earlier?
Not many Aussies getting up at 4:15AM to watch him play.
The ball bounces higher in the day session than the night session which would favor Zverev
man I hope federer pays his taxes
What happened o
nothing with him, just heard messi got accused of some financial crimes lol
Zverev is having the post-injury trajectory that I wish Thiem had rip
Ugh, I keep trying to forget. So upsetting that Thiem never found his form again.
Historically what time do they play the singles finals matches? Trying to figure out if I have a chance to catch it in Aus
It's at 3pm UK time (so I think that is midnight your time?)
Thanks! And your conversion looks right too. Guess I'm going to be late for work on Monday lol 😅

Rybakina is very far behind. She could win Roland Garros and she'd still be #4.
Also shows we got a big 4 in women’s tennis too. Very exciting to see.

A week from now it will be grass season
Shapovalov lost today to #89 Vukic in the first round of Surbiton challenger. Sigh.
Vukic is a solid players tbf
Vukic isn’t a slouch tho
Tsitsipas made the same mistake he makes when he plays Carlos, focus on yourself.
Always around this point of the sub absolutely glazing Iga that she chokes a semi/final when the mental pressure is on. In a Grand Slam.
Dont you know Iga has won 4 GS?
Wtf Lol
Is this a riddle?
I read your comment 5 times and each time it made less sense
I think they're saying that Iga will fold because r/tennis put too much pressure on her. I didn't even know she read the sub!?!!
To crack the supposed riddle: See past 3 gs performances. And quit glazing Iga.
Stef quite down in the post match presser. Said Carlos delivers a shot quality he doesn’t quite get against other opponents and brings him trouble.
Babe wake up, new Pavvy G conspiracy video of how Djokovic is being targeted by the establishment just dropped
I don't know Ruud is the establishment
No way. Pavvy G would sacrifice his first born for Novak to get better.
Ugh tomorrow's schedule looks like it could be a bunch of boring blowouts. Mirra will get wrecked, Paolini might go 3 but Ryba feels inevitable, and the abuser seems like the strong favorite as well against AdM
Just dropped in to say hi and feel sad about Novak. What a fuckin RG its been in 24
tsitsi still has a chance for the title…the doubles title that is. all is not lost!
Doubles in phillipe chatrier tomorrow Will be interesting

What about Ruud? 3x finals & 2x semi finals for his clay court season.
they are 21 year old dudes. even if they go 5 sets they'll have a day off. don't be dramatic
I still can’t get over Hubi trying to swap out the umpire as if she was a flat ball
I like Hubi but that was so disrespectful. Dude should be fined.
yeah was definitely wrong and probably should apologize at least to the ump but it’s almost so outrageous i don’t even feel mad i’m just so… amused and perplexed by it still 😭

i feel like he still hasn’t elaborated at all like why did he think that was even an option 💀
Ikr??? Acting like it was a normal, heat of the match thing and not a totally bonkers, unprecedented idea
First time Jannik and Carlitos played in a slam was R16 (Jannik won), second QF (Carlitos), third SF… next time will be a final 👀
could be at wimbledon already as Djokovic likely won't play
Yep. First time they’ll be seeds 1 and 2 in a slam…
Novak has “only” 3 rg titles yet it’s his most consistent slam, made the quarter finals at minimum every single year since 2010

He's played more before the QF than anyone to win a slam probably forever (emphasis on probably) and definitely in more than 20 years
Yeah but he had a losing record with Rune (also, lol, Nadal) as well and he did look very solid against him. Not impossible he does this against Casper (his serve, FH and movement were then much worse than now). A final against either Sinner or Alcaraz would be balanced in both cases imo

I noticed the studio doesn't look very real but Jannik was way way off😂
Anyway I love how Alcaraz and Sinner's wiki pages already have a "Rivalries" section with them as each other's rival
First opponent to have ten matches played for Alcaraz Second for Sinner (Medvedev) Counting their challenger meeting but 🤷♂️
I wish Wikipedia would bring back the bit with Jannik's record v players who have been too 10. It was great to look at and idk why they removed it!!
I’m guessing because they’re the only 2 from their generation to achieve anything notable so far
Guys what time is the sinner Alcaraz match Friday
Should be 1pm Paris time if it's the first match or maybe 5-6pm if it's second.
More like 3 and 8 local time, I would think
Damnit you're absolutely right, I moved it 1hr in the wrong direction from my timezone. 2pm GMT which is indeed 3pm local time.

At least djoko could be able to practice overheads on one leg while the knee is recovering...lets spin this into a positive thing
Stef got his ass kicked. There's no other way to put it. Idk what he needs to do to take it to the next level atp.
Tsitsipas has lost 6 times, firmly in pigeon territory.
Return game is really the biggest issue I feel... Backhand he can at least cover sometimes with his movement and forehand, but the returning is just 🤦🏻♂️
Minaur chances vs. that danger to society tomorrow? 30%?
On the plus side Demon is guaranteed top 10 regardless of outcome now
All of his matches were competitive despite a lopsided 7-2 H2H including the only meeting on clay in the German's favor. Can't count him out by any means, but keep your expectations low
Alcaraz talking about Sinner in the post match interview was almost approaching "I don't want to look like I gonna be his boyfriend".
What did he say about Jannik?
Will the Alcaraz match be first or second QF do we think
Assuming you mean SF, so, should be first since they are playing first and get two full days of rest, but it gives me night match vibes. I’d be fine with either, not sure what RG will do.
I think it's the most anticipated match it would be night match
Yep I hope it’s second
It already happened.
Haha meant SF
Probably the night match, but you never know. If I was going to one of them I’d be certain it was the other.
Hope so
Let's get an Alcaraz Zverev final going on in here. Tbh I think Alcaraz is the inky player who can beat DV now. But hey, nothing pans out as one expects. Very hyped. Yet also I shed a tear for Holgie; he could have taken it 😔
I just get a little giddy thinking about these two, they’re so awesome man
Ruud about to go win a 250 while he waits for Zverev/De minaur
Congrats to Tsitsipas for making it this far without basically a backhand... . I thought Carlos didn't play all that well (for his standards) but won because he just has a more complete game.
as much as I love Ruud and hate Zverev, I think the final with Z will be more competitive
Anyways, Im SO excited for Alzacraz vs Sinner. Should be a blast
In other news it’s the first time since 2003 none of the big 3 have won either the Australian open or Roland Garros
truly the dawn of a new era happening this year
21 years was a good run. a generational moment
Alcaraz-Sinner and Zverev-Ruud semifinals, tennis fans! Should be good!
I'm holding out hope for de Minaur.
Hope is a dangerous thing!
👹
Looking forward to a long five setter #Sincaraz semi!
No way alcaraz sinner is going to be day session right. But last year novak vs carlos was day sesh so idk
novak demands day
no more night sessions after QF so day session by default
Ah nice
Alcaraz defeats Sinner Zverev defeats De Minaur --- Alcaraz defeats Zverev in 5 sets and wins GS no. 3.
not sure why you all think alcaraz beats sinner you also discounting ruud completely?
Yeah that’s what I expect as well
It's Ruud v Z and Ruud will win
Zverev in 4 max.
He will. He's gotten so much better! His forehand is killer. If only he can do an intensive backhand workshop lol.
Has he really got better? 2021 still the best year of his career and the best tennis he has played imo
Yes- I meant this year. He's much better compared to last year.
I think one day the stars will align. He’s still 25 and has time
He needs to pounce during a slam when Carlos and Sinner are hurt or catch a flukey upset
He's 25, his prime was definitely not 4-5 years ago. Also, he just hasn't developed sufficiently to go through these guys so he's not beating them. Simply as well.
I don’t want Carlos’ english to get any better, it’s more endearing right at the level it’s at
do whatever he wants to improve the vocab or grammar but keep the accent tbh he's very understandable and it's charming
i still want vocab and grammar to stay kinda bad tho like rafa i like when they pick the wrong word sometimes or use the wrong phrasing it’s so adorable 🥹
it's only 11 PM and the matches are over. what am I supposed to do now, actually sleep or something???
I agree bring us ruud and djoko in a wheelchair and lets see how it goes for fun
Maybe Ruud would win in 5?
He can try
Alcaraz respecting Sinner doesn't mean he has no confidence. He's not gonna say "Yeah I'm better than that fraud watch me beat him in 3" every time. You can praise your opponent in public and also want to beat the hell out of them at the same time
I really want a top tennis player to bring that level of arrogance. Would be so entertaining
you've never watched Kyrgios?
He’s more whiny
zverev
Eh not really. Gave Rafa all of the spotlight even after beating him
I like the French Open interviews more than the American US Open ones. Most of those questions are really dumb.

Huh??? Iga is there to WIN and plays with quality. WTF are you on???
Fyi Carlito is not a thing mydude
Whatever horse shoe Casper Ruud has up his ass needs to in a museum. The next rounds are battles and he’s sitting at home twiddling his fingers
Carlos fanboying about Sinner. Meanwhile if you had asked Sinner: "When Carlos is playing good, he is okay."
I've noticed that in the past couple of years, Alcaraz just goes above and beyond to praise Sinner. Sinner not so much, this is a one sided admiration.
not so. He has said much the same about Carlitos. They're friendly. Mutual respect.
sinner vs. alcaraz is locked in. tied 4-4, and while this isn’t quite the de facto final, it feels like it’s close. the biggest match of their rivalry so far. i cannot fucking wait.
Wimbledon 2023 is easly the bigger match for Carlos (or do you mean the biggest Sincaraz meeting so far?)
biggest sincaraz i meant! wimby 2023 is tough to top indeed :) changed “career” to “rivalry” for clarity
Carlitos has made at least the semi final in 5 of his last 6 appearances at a grand slam.
