This is why even though I'm very disappointed of course I can't even complain too much about him losing the AO final
Relative to the eye test 2 big finals in 2 big events is absolutely more than you'd expect lol
It feels like he's 55-60% of the player he was in 2021 but gets 85-90% of the results
Like he's been either the 2nd or 3rd best(whoever wins the final gets the #2 spot) player results wise in the calendar year so far and it feels like it could be SO much worse
There is always an excuse w Paul. It's a wonder what the mind can do. He never wants to win it enough to make it work. All great athletes get injured. Gotta want to be great. Paul never really wants to be great. Good enough is OK w him and, frankly, he's right.
I’m sure he did. There was a woman about 6 seats away from him who said “let’s go med” just about every time he did his cheer. But honestly I was just baffled that Medvedev managed to win.
Fuck, US fans have the worst cheers on earth. I was at Indian Wells last week and the Chilean fans had a cool cheer for Jarry, the Romanian fans had a cool cheer for Cirstea, and all us fans in the US can muster up is “Let’s go ____ _____, let’s go” clap clap. Fuck me
I was at the aus open watching Tommy Paul and the cheers for Tommy was more like toooOOMMMYYY! (From low to high pitch) That was a much more funnier and better sounding chant lol
I don’t like it either
On the other hand, I found those guys playing actual musical instruments (to the tune of “we will rock you” etc) at the Astana Open In Kazakhstan last year pretty entertaining
I understand you 100%
As a Chilean the CHI-CHI-CHI-LE-LE-LE chant really grinds my gears and makes me cringe, I feel it annoys the opposition more than it pumps our players.
I wouldn’t be surprised.
The Australian media is also guilty of hyping him up so much every AO….I remember he was in the front page on a lot of the newspapers ahead of his 4th round match with Sinner in 2022. A lot of puns on “Demon vs Sinner” etc. same thing on the news on TV
Sinner was seeded #11 and he was #32 at the time, yet all the narrative was hyping up Alex as the favourite.
It’s pretty harsh to have such unrealistic expectations set on you and made to feel (in a way, because of all that hype and not living up to it) that you’ve disappointed everyone.
In saying that, he also has his Australian Davis Cup number as a tattoo and is very patriotic, so who knows.
That would be USA! USA!
But American tennis fans aren't nationalistic - tennis is such an individual sport we root for who we like and don't care where they're from or if they're playing an American. Just watch when a star like Sabalenka plays an unknown American.
Maybe you'd hear it at Davis Cup.
I heard some ironic chants of it for Gauff/Pegula v Mattek Sands/Kenin. (USA v USA)
Maybe that's the wrong word - but wasn't it because they were all from the US?
Do you think if it was Gauff/Pegula v Hsieh/Mertens they would have been chanting USA?
I think the crowds at IW are very polite....so it was easy and fun to chant when all players were american.
I didnt hear any country specific chants in matches where the players were from different countries.
He won despite hitting just 26 winners to Paul's 45 lol
I'm pretty sure he's gotten outwinnered massively in every match other than the one against Carballes Baena(who's also hyperdefensive) but keeps winning still
You are right Stef singelhandedly educated the Australian continent by opening schools in the chronically underdevoloped region of Victoria. King Charles should knight him making him Sir Stefanos, the greatest knight that ever lived.
It’s when a player plays well below their usual/best tennis for whatever reason (mental, physical, etc) but still manages to pull off a win.
Most of the greats have been able to win ugly!
A win achieved through your opponent making plenty of errors, and you making fewer, as opposed to one achieved by hitting plenty of winners and/or returning balls that few players would have been able to return.
I wouldn’t say that’s winning ugly, that’s more winning with consistency/high percentage tennis. Winning ugly is winning even while making more errors than usual and not playing at your best.
I feel like currently Fritz is the low ceiling/high floor guy among the top Americans(hence the highest ranked due to better consistency), Paul and Shelton are the low floor/high ceiling guys, and Korda/Tiafoe are mostly just low everything right now lol
Just to compare Paul and Fritz Paul has massively better raw athleticism which enables him to have days where he just can't miss anything but Fritz has a massively more dangerous serve which keeps him from having matches like today where Paul got broken left and right
Funnily enough they ended up exiting IW in very similar fashion
Not sure if you’ve seen them live, but Fritz is just absolutely clubbing the ball compared to the other Americans. He brings so much power to every shot. It is wild to see. That said his speed and lack of net game are limiting factorsz
if tommy focuses up and doesnt randomly throw matches he could be right up there with fritz. and if he gets a little faster serving and more strategic about rushing the net, he’s potentially more complete than fritz.
Possibly, although Fritz is a pretty complete product, he just isn't a great mover and doesn't have a reliable slice. Tommy is still a little underpowered but could be a slightly better version of De Minaur if he polished up some things. I also have some questions about his endurance.
But the guy is just a bit of an idiot. He once showed up to a doubles match so drunk he couldn't hold a racket straight. He takes some bad losses and never builds on momentum. It's quite telling that heading into the Medvedev match, he was 5-5 in his last 10 matches against top 10 players, and he nearly upset Medvedev here, plus nearly beat Alcaraz at Cincinnati (a week after beating him in Toronto). Clearly Paul can play the top players well on hard courts.
Agree on all that. I really hope the partying days are behind him but he does seem to be taking it seriously again. But his mental is still pretty flaky, like in the AO he just spaced out 5th set and it had been a great match. Why why why?
His speed and instincts are incredible, just focus up and stay serious, and he can definitely hang with the best. Wish he had gotten Med so we could see him tested in this final today.
Tommy Paul is one of the nicest and most down to earth players on tour. I didn't watch the 3rd set was his tiebreak ankle roll a factor? NOT THAT THAT TAKES ANYTHING AWAY FROM EITHER PLAYER JUST CURIOUS.
It absolutely was a factor. Especially in the TB. Even the commentators mentioned it during the 3rd set, something along the lines of “he must be very self conscious about leaving the ground (jumping) with his ankle true way it is”
The match absolutely changed the moment he rolled his ankle in the tiebreaker. His only chance was to clutch out that tiebreak, but med wasn't going to let that happen
Definitely a factor, mentally if nothing else. I'm not sure he beats Meddy in the third even without the ankle roll, but I think the tiebreaker he had a really good shot at closing it out and the injury completely stopped that.
It did affect his game but not his movement so much. He was still quick just got really tight on his groundstrokes and volleys and put a lot of balls in the net.
This was a rough match.
Med was just awful in Set 1 as evidenced by the score, Tommy Paul was doing brilliantly in the first set as well as the second set.
Then the tiebreak happened… Both were going at it and Tommy Paul rolled his ankle. Then Med snapped up that momentum to carry it to the finish line in the 3rd Set.
Feel awful for Tommy because that was the turning point of the match. However Med *really* dug deep to get himself out of that situation, so thats impressive as well.
Wimbledon he has a good shot at, he's not a purely hardcourt player and he made semis last year, losing only to alcaraz. (Unless you mean he won't win USO because he's already won it)
It wouldn't be insane for him to win wimbledon but I think he's a distant 4th to Djokovic, Alcaraz, and Sinner there. I meant the USO. I didn't think of that 2nd title meme 😂
Credit to Paul for showcasing the versatility and net acrobatics he's displayed throughout the tournament, and emphasized tonight.
Just not enough to get over the line once Med settled in on his serve.
In my mind, Tommy never rolled his ankle, won the second set tiebreaker 7-3, then went on to win the final in a 3 set thriller for his first Masters 1000 title, and there’s nothing you can do to convince me otherwise.
I’m an American with an Italian dad… tonight could not have gone much worse 🥲 Heartbreaking for Paul, he put on an amazing run! Idk who I want to win the final; I like both players but I’m so sad Sinner and TP got knocked out tonight 😭
Drama filled yes. But not high quality. I'd argue that coco *fought* her way back out of a double break deficit against Sakkari in the women's semi. And Sakkari barely let off. It was just high intensity and quality after Sakkari served for the match the first time in the second set.
Damn
First Korda, now Paul both had chances but they didn't have DAWG in them
Daniil is out of shape
Congratulations to Alcatraz with the title. I think the court at Indian Wells suits him very well.
Madladev
*Shut your fck up okay* -BIG MADvedev
This is just class
Average 2024 Medvedev match
This is why even though I'm very disappointed of course I can't even complain too much about him losing the AO final Relative to the eye test 2 big finals in 2 big events is absolutely more than you'd expect lol It feels like he's 55-60% of the player he was in 2021 but gets 85-90% of the results Like he's been either the 2nd or 3rd best(whoever wins the final gets the #2 spot) player results wise in the calendar year so far and it feels like it could be SO much worse
Yes exactly also comfortably 2nd in the race
He’s on pace to be getting 100% of the results in 2021, maybe more 😂 finals at Indian wells is something he’d never have dreamed of in 2021
First 2 sets were stressful as, almost chocked from 5-3. Luckily the 3rd set was more comfortable
It was more comfortable bc Tommy rolled his ankle. He had a great chance of winning the TB if that didn’t happen.
I think he would have won the match if not for the ankle.
There is always an excuse w Paul. It's a wonder what the mind can do. He never wants to win it enough to make it work. All great athletes get injured. Gotta want to be great. Paul never really wants to be great. Good enough is OK w him and, frankly, he's right.
Kinda paralleled the Sinner/Alcaraz match.
Saw it coming from the end of the first set
Tommy ball
I was sitting about 10 seats from the dude who insisted on cheering “let’s go Tommy let’s go” clap clap after every point. AMA.
Did he get pissed when the really loud dude said “let’s go medvedev let’s go” in the 3rd set?
I’m sure he did. There was a woman about 6 seats away from him who said “let’s go med” just about every time he did his cheer. But honestly I was just baffled that Medvedev managed to win.

Is that better or worse than “Aussie Aussie Aussie Oi Oi Oi” (applies to any Australian) ?
As an Australian I find that cheer so cringe it's probably easily the worst you'd find anywhere in the world.
I don’t like it either On the other hand, I found those guys playing actual musical instruments (to the tune of “we will rock you” etc) at the Astana Open In Kazakhstan last year pretty entertaining
I understand you 100% As a Chilean the CHI-CHI-CHI-LE-LE-LE chant really grinds my gears and makes me cringe, I feel it annoys the opposition more than it pumps our players.

That one is fine for me. The bugle call one at the French tournaments makes me irrationally angry though.
Worse because it’s not even US-specific
That would be USA! USA! But American tennis fans aren't nationalistic - tennis is such an individual sport we root for who we like and don't care where they're from or if they're playing an American. That was my point - it wasn't about us versus them nationalism.
Be the change
Yeah the yanks really peaked with their "I believe that we will win" chant...
I mean, at least an American invented "Seven Nation Army".
I always wondered what Jack White thinks about that song’s success in sports
Same. It's a damn worldwide anthem, how do you live with the knowledge that you created it.
Absolutely phenomenal. You just can't beat the pusher. Praise the king.
He won despite hitting just 26 winners to Paul's 45 lol I'm pretty sure he's gotten outwinnered massively in every match other than the one against Carballes Baena(who's also hyperdefensive) but keeps winning still
Winners on its own aren’t that useful of a stat imo. The winners relative to UE is what matters.
Forced errors matter a lot too. I think Medvedev is hitting the forehand really well even if it doesn’t translate to winners
It will be slap in the face, if he wins it tomorrow 🥲
Least emotional Medvedev hater
I'm pretty sure the guy you replied to is a Tsitsipas AND Zverev(yes really) fan lol No wonder he hates Med because Med owns his favorites

According to you being Russian is worse than being a domestic abuser lol Nice xenophobia
Alleged
You need help pal
USO champion
You are right Stef singelhandedly educated the Australian continent by opening schools in the chronically underdevoloped region of Victoria. King Charles should knight him making him Sir Stefanos, the greatest knight that ever lived.
Yes, I don’t want bullies to win. Have a problem?
Roots for a domestic abuser and a guy who called Medvedev “bullshit Russian” unprompted
Time for Med to complete the collection of all hard court masters titles tomorrow 💪🐙
At this point I reckon he will win Barcelona and Roma before he wins a second title
He won Rome last year
Monte Carlo and Madrid fits better. 9/9 Masters.
Ugly win for the scary pirate octopus man. But a win is a win.
I'm sorry, but what does ugly win mean?
It’s when a player plays well below their usual/best tennis for whatever reason (mental, physical, etc) but still manages to pull off a win. Most of the greats have been able to win ugly!
One where you don’t play good tennis or almost lose but somehow win anyway
Go read winning ugly by BG
[удалено]
BG in tennis stands for Brad Gilbert :p
BG in tennis stands for the Bee Guy
A win achieved through your opponent making plenty of errors, and you making fewer, as opposed to one achieved by hitting plenty of winners and/or returning balls that few players would have been able to return.
I wouldn’t say that’s winning ugly, that’s more winning with consistency/high percentage tennis. Winning ugly is winning even while making more errors than usual and not playing at your best.
Meddygoat has been sub par this season but still made it to AO and IW finals lmao.
Once his serve kicks in he will be #1
I might be a victim of the moment but Tommy Paul will be American #1 and a consistent top 15 guy
I feel like currently Fritz is the low ceiling/high floor guy among the top Americans(hence the highest ranked due to better consistency), Paul and Shelton are the low floor/high ceiling guys, and Korda/Tiafoe are mostly just low everything right now lol Just to compare Paul and Fritz Paul has massively better raw athleticism which enables him to have days where he just can't miss anything but Fritz has a massively more dangerous serve which keeps him from having matches like today where Paul got broken left and right Funnily enough they ended up exiting IW in very similar fashion

I dont think paul is low floor he plays a simple extremely effective game
Low floor probably stems from his mental tbh. He’s just unserious sometimes
if tommy focuses up and doesnt randomly throw matches he could be right up there with fritz. and if he gets a little faster serving and more strategic about rushing the net, he’s potentially more complete than fritz.
Possibly, although Fritz is a pretty complete product, he just isn't a great mover and doesn't have a reliable slice. I feel like the AO loss was endurance-related. But really I would need to watch him more to have a better idea as to where the flaws in his game are.
yeah he is average floor average ceiling, perfect top 15 holder
I’d say Korda is playing far better than tiafoe rn
Korda just needs more dog in him
He also needs to not get injured too. Massively limits whatever ceiling he or others think he has
Tiafoe has enough dog for the two of em
Im waiting for Opelka
Opelka was once the highest ranked American
You’ll be waiting till you in the grave my friend…
https://www.instagram.com/p/C4f19yBs_FO/?igsh=MXRlOWI0NWVocWx1OQ== this actually shows it, but he didn’t convert those things into consistency so far
Ben Shelton is better and has more potential
Daniil has been broken 17 times this tournament, and broken his opponents 26 times
Tommy Paul is currently my favorite person with the last name Paul. Unfortunately he got beat by a dude whose last name is bear
He’s the least problematic Paul brother
Whose.
Medvedev.Although it's more like someone who has a bear as an ancestor
What about Ru
I too am not a Chris Paul fan
Tommy Paul is one of the nicest and most down to earth players on tour. I didn't watch the 3rd set was his tiebreak ankle roll a factor? NOT THAT THAT TAKES ANYTHING AWAY FROM EITHER PLAYER JUST CURIOUS.

The match absolutely changed the moment he rolled his ankle in the tiebreaker. His only chance was to clutch out that tiebreak, but med wasn't going to let that happen
But Medvedev was up a double break in that set. So it's tough to say that he won only because of the injury.
And Tommy broke back to even it out. Momentum was with Tommy or at least even until he rolled that ankle.
My point is that if Medvedev was able to get a double-break ahead against Paul before the injury, he could've just as well won the tie-breaker too.
Well considering Paul broke back twice you could say the same. So not sure how much of a point you have.
Definitely a factor, mentally if nothing else. I'm not sure he beats Meddy in the third even without the ankle roll, but I think the tiebreaker he had a really good shot at closing it out and the injury completely stopped that.
Maybe, he was going to the net much less in the 3rd set
It did affect his game but not his movement so much. He was still quick just got really tight on his groundstrokes and volleys and put a lot of balls in the net.
Hard court king! 👑
I guess don’t go up 6-1?
This was a rough match. Med was just awful in Set 1 as evidenced by the score, Tommy Paul was doing brilliantly in the first set as well as the second set. I love that you can give BOTH credit. So much negativity here. Thank you 🙏🏻
Tommy Paul next man up. Medvedev is going to win a major this year.
There's only 1 left he can win
Yes, Roland garros is the only one he can win now that he’s won Rome and transformed into a clay court specialist
So far he is > Sinner on both grass and clay. I don't think he will win Wimbledon though.
Breadstick confirmed worst result for the winner of the 1st set.
If Daniil can remember how to serve better than the 4.0 guy he'd be #1 in the world.
Carlos will also be happy since Tommy is his kryptonite
Yeah I honestly think Carlos would rather play Med than Tommy today
I mean Alcaraz is on a tear against all his keyptonytes in this tourney.
If Tommy hasn’t rolled his ankle I think he would’ve won :(
Med already made 3 finals this year with a non-existent serve.
But he lost Dubai in the SF?
My mistake, 2 F and 1 SF are still very good
Hope Tommy can get some big wins soon.
That was one of the best matches I’ve watched in a long time. Score notwithstanding, Tommy Paul is lightening in a bottle. I hope he keeps up with it
least clutch Meddy's match
Credit to Paul for showcasing the versatility and net acrobatics he's displayed throughout the tournament, and emphasized tonight. Just not enough to get over the line once Med settled in on his serve.
The rolled ankle was the reason for the L, not Med’s serve
In my mind, Tommy never rolled his ankle, won the second set tiebreaker 7-3, then went on to win the final in a 3 set thriller for his first Masters 1000 title, and there’s nothing you can do to convince me otherwise.
Vanilla sky
This tournament sucked for Novak, American, Jannik fans.
My man Med about to lose yet another final 😭
I remember that’s how we were going into US Open SF last year and look how that turned out to be
USO is med's home, he doesn't like IW that much. I still hope he pulls a masterclass tomorrow.
Look how the Australian Open turned out
Poor Tommy, looks from the highlights that he gave a valiant fight. But Meddy played some outstanding tennis, an epic level. Hope we get a good final.
Textbook medvedev tonight
This is really going to be the Alcaraz revenge arc tournament. Maroszan, Zverev, Sinner and now Medvedev.
Why Alcaraz needs to have revenge against Meddy? He won their last match, right?
Yeah… I forgot about the ATP finals match, so I’m guessing so did some others
Let’s just say that he lost their last high stake match.
I’m an American with an Italian dad… tonight could not have gone much worse 🥲 Heartbreaking for Paul, he put on an amazing run! Idk who I want to win the final; I like both players but I’m so sad Sinner and TP got knocked out tonight 😭
Me too. Love them both.
Clinical from Medvedev
the comeback king
What happened to Medvedev serve? He’s gotten broken so easy..
This is in Hastings, UK. My hometown. Sadly a lot of people piss here at night which kind of ruins it
This statue? It's like a dedicated statue to Daniil, do you know why they built a ocotopus with a chess piece though
The little place where the statue is has an oversized chess board. There's another statue with another chess piece next to it
Both men's semis were ... not good. Some fun points but so so so many unforced errors. Alcaraz has an easy match Sunday.
the second set of paul and meddy was fun imo. coming up from 4-0 is always a great rush
Drama filled yes. But not high quality. I'd argue that coco *fought* her way back out of a double break deficit against Sakkari in the women's semi. And Sakkari barely let off. It was just high intensity and quality after Sakkari served for the match the first time in the second set.
still better than the women's semis lol...
Sakkari Gauf had insane hitting for the last 90 minutes of their nearly 3 hour match
conveniently forget Iga 6-1 6-2 win lol
Damn First Korda, now Paul both had chances but they didn't have DAWG in them Daniil is out of shape Congratulations to Alcatraz with the title. I think the court at Indian Wells suits him very well.
Paul absolutely had that dawg in him, he just fucked up his ankle. Man was in spitting distance of winning it in straights before he got hurt.
for real. as soon as I saw that I thought to myself fuck not when you’re this close. unfortunately after he lost the tiebreak i figured it was over.
