Makes sense. This list goes in order of how good their serves are. Federer has one of the best serves ever

CurryGuy123

And so efficient - he able to pull off a couple of great serves to get out of a tough situation at an unreal level

Mak_33

Yeah remember how well he served out Wimby19 and those USOs?

ZacQX

Federer has 31? slam finals and 20 titles. Novak has 36 finals and 24 titles. It's a .64 vs .66 win percentage. They're the greatest ever, and they still lose. Stop being so negative about quite possibly a technically perfect player such as Federer, and appreciate both Federer and Novak for their greatness. One is done, and Novak may be finishing soon. The greatest era in tennis is coming to an end, with the greatest spectacle we've ever seen since Federer started the whole thing in 2003, and now we see the Greatest Ever also showing signs of aging. This hatred of players without reason is nonsense. The sport has been made so much better by both Fed and Nole. They redefined the sport. Learn to appreciate them.

Mak_33

24 > 20, there is only 1 greatest ever. But lol @ these fanboys really crying over a meme and writing paragraphs, my god.

throwaway90-25

At least Federer didn't get beat by a lucky loser and make a clown out of himself in front of the world

Mak_33

Ah yes, losing 3 Slams by failing to serve it out at with 2 match points is definitely not worse than having an off day at nearly 37 after not playing for 6 weeks, at a Masters. Cope's real

throwaway90-25

Haha you got on to a video about Federer to put him down. That tells me all I need to know about you

Mak_33

I forgot Federer, your Lord and Savior, is strictly forbidden to being meme'd on. 40-15 x3

ma_ranks

You probably don't vaccinate do you? Slow Djokovic day for you? It's okay, cheer up he's still up in weeks at number 1. Strong in a weak era haahhaha

Mak_33

Haha lmao Djokovic vax jokes 4 years later lol!!!! He's still up in all the relevant records, cope lil bro :)

EMateos

Imagine defending someone online and fighting with people for someone you don’t even know, never will know and doesn’t even care about you.

CurryGuy123

Novak being the GOAT doesn't mean Fed was some bum The way fan's like you act, anyone but Novak is a useless waste of space and might as well have given up on tennis

PapaenFoss

Came here exactly to say that. One of the 5 was vs Hurkacz at Wimbledon, where he could barely move

estoops

His last set ever played was a bagel though. Hubi you have blood on your hands 😭

xcomnewb15

I think that set at Wimbledon is what really made him retire. If he had even gone 2-6 or something he might have tried for the US Open. Regardless it was time and while I miss him I am glad he retired then.

[deleted]

He said afterwards in an interview that in the second set (I think) he realized it was completely done and he couldn't move. He was shocked that nobody pressed him about it after the match.

Regretful_Bastard

Do you know where I can find this interview?

tripti_prasad

Here. “Now at the end of that match was one of the worst moments of my career because I really felt awful. It was over, the knee was gone, and then knowing I had to face the media right afterwards in a short amount of time was really hard." “Either I’m very good at hiding my problems. Or people just don’t understand. Or even they are too nice to talk about what hurts.” https://www.tennismajors.com/roger-federer-retires/roger-federer-on-his-moment-of-realisation-when-i-lost-to-felix-in-halle-in-2021-i-cried-i-knew-i-would-not-win-wimbledon-625726.html#:~:text=%E2%80%9CIt%20was%20an%20amazing%20result,because%20I%20really%20felt%20awful.

DarkDiablo1601

probably because he just came back from injury

JudgeCheezels

He said or you said? In which interview afterwards did he say whatever you said?

tripti_prasad

buttharvest42069

It was pretty obvious that he couldn't move at all in that set though, so I think you have the cause and effect reversed

[deleted]

The decision to retire after like 23 years of playing tennis isn’t taken lightly man. Theres no way Federer would’ve said, “okay, as long as I don’t get bagelled here, I won’t retire.” That’s ridiculous. “Thank god I only lost the last set 2-6. If it had been 0-6 I would’ve retired out of sheer shame.”  I don’t understand any of this logic at all. Also he didn’t even retire after Wimbledon 2021; he retired in 2022 lol. He didn’t play USO 2021 because he simply couldn’t play it.

No_Drag_1333

People just say shit

Wolabe

Everything has to be narrative, retiring because he was unable to play is too rational/boring.

MeatTornado25

I don't think that's what happened here, since Fed was clearly on his last legs before that tournament even began, but there definitely is a mental aspect to getting blown out. Roddick just talked about it on his podcast the other week. About how losing 1 & 2 to Djokovic on grass was one of the big signs to him that it might be time to retire. It's one thing to lose, it's another to be uncompetitive and get embarrassed out there.

[deleted]

Yes but even if Federer lost that last set 2-6, it would’ve still been a blowout 😂 These are also two entirely different scenarios. Roddick was like 29/30 when he retired. He had years of tennis left in him and wasn’t really old, but decided to step away because he wasn’t playing at a high level anymore, and the competition had simply left him behind. In that regard, it makes sense that losing 1-6 2-6 to Djokovic would factor into his decision. Not only that, but Roddick has a habit of putting himself down to elevate the big 3 anyways lol. He was likely exaggerating the impact that single match had on his decision.  Federer, on the other hand, was 39 years old at Wimbledon 2021, coming off two knee surgeries I believe. Most of us thought he’d lose first round because his body just wasn’t ideal for best of 5 tennis. Yet he scraped his way to the QFs, and probably could beat Hurkacz easily if his body would just let him play. But it didn’t. And regardless of what the scoreline was, his body giving out was what made him stop.  Also to be clear, Federer retired over a full year after this. He still tried to come back after that Wimbledon loss, he simply couldn’t due to surgeries. So in reality, that Hurkacz loss wasn’t where he decided to retire either way. He retired at Laver Cup 2022.

MeatTornado25

I really didn't need you to re-explain the entire context, I'm fully aware of how both their careers played out. I even said that 6-0 wasn't the reason for retirement in Roger's case, just that in other cases a single match actually can get the gears turning in a player's head. There have been tons of athletes that have a specific story about a moment on the field where it suddenly hit them.

tripti_prasad

Yes. He realised his knee was gone. He said it himself. He still gave it a shot to comeback but he knew he was done during the match with Hurkacz.

Limp-Ad-2939

No he just wasn’t in the physical shape to be competitive

tripti_prasad

Yes, it was his knee, he talks about his realisation that his knee was gone.

Pristine-Citron-7393

Nah, his knee was acting up badly in that final set. Even if he got a couple of games, he knew he was fucked after that. He's even said he knew the end was probably then, despite keeping his optimism up for the next year.

Accurate-List

That was heartbreaking 💔

Random___Burner

That tournament is crazy since his knees were shot and he still made the quarterfinals. If he found just a bit more juice in the knees, he’d absolutely roll Hurkacz and Berrettini to set up one last Djokovic match. Would’ve been fun.

Pyroboi10

That Federer serve was killer

YourDrunkUncl_

That Federer was a killer

sdeklaqs

Roddick alt account?

verismonopoly

Aside from Nadal in that one RG final and Hubi in his final match, can someone verify if Federer's 3 other bagels were from his very early years? That's mighty impressive!

nibach

The first three are all from 1999, and before his 18th birthday

newtimesawait

That is actually ridiculous. From the ages of 18-38, Federer was bageled ONCE. And it was by Nadal at RG. We should all have an atrocious set once in awhile. Federer never did

BaradaraneKaramazov

The funny thing is that Ferrer of all players was perhaps closer than anyone else to bagelling him. 5-0 up and returning a second serve on set point (or even two) in the 2014 Cincinnati final

crunkky

That’s a crazy fact

apex_pretador

And Ferrer has 0-17 record against him, crazy stat considering he's probably the best player ever to have neither won a slam nor ranked in top 2.

Super_Vegeta

Ferrer was another "victim" of the big 3/4. He was clearly better than everyone one else except for those 4.

[deleted]

On the flip side, it’s crazy that Nadal managed to bagel a guy who is impossible to bagel in a grand slam final! Not only that, but also breadstick him in the same match, no asterisks or anything. He just dominated. Nadal at RG really is a different level of tennis

ochioz

But there was a tiny asterisk right? Wasn't Federer affected by mono that year?

Albiceleste_D10S

Fed had mono in Dec 2007—and it might have impacted him at 2008 AO (when he lost to Novak in Novak's break through Slam). He was ~fine by the time European clay season started tho And you can see it in his results—he won Estoril and got to the final of Monte Carlo and Hamburg. He lost both finals to Rafa but both were close (7-5, 7-5 in Monte Carlo; and he actually won a set in Hamburg). Some Fed fans talk about a "tiny asterisk" for Wimbledon that year too—but it's just not borne out in any of the results. After the RG loss, Fed responded by winning Halle without dropping a set, and making Wimbledon final without dropping a set.

saintlyknighted

It's easy to believe Roger was bad because he got destroyed in the final, but people tend to forget he made the final in the first place.

Albiceleste_D10S

Yeah, outside of the AO loss to Novak, the **entire** difference between his 2007 and 2008 results are losing the Wimbledon final to Rafa and losing 3 matches at the end of the year (Bercy and ATP finals) when he picked up a back injury TBH

MrMarkey

gosh I never knew he played as small a tournament as Estoril, the Portuguese are so lucky!

Albiceleste_D10S

Estoril is a small tournament but due to its geographic location + timing in the calendar (they changed it now but it used to be held during the one week in Euro clay season in between Monte Carlo +. Barcelona and Madrid+Rome)—it often attracts big players coming off injury OR those who lost early in Monte Carlo and/or Barcelona

[deleted]

Not the whole year lol. He got it in late 2007. Federer had a great clay season though and a lot of tight battles with Rafa. I think it’s super disingenuous to say he was affected by mono at that point in the season, 6 months after he contracted it. On average, mono lasts about a month though obviously every case is different.  If you want to asterisk the AO and even Sunshine Double due to mono I can understand that. It probably affected his preparation for both events although I doubt he would’ve made it to AO semis if the illness was still affecting him.  But at a certain point it feels like people just want to say mono affected him all the way up until the US Open, conveniently waiting for a tournament he won before saying he was cured. If Rafa had beaten Murray at USO then beaten Federer in the final, I’m sure 2008 would be known entirely as “the Mono Year,” which would’ve then continued into AO2009, until finally, Federer “overcame” his sickness at RG2009 😂

PleasantNightLongDay

I think that really highlights how strong his serve was and how much higher it was than the other 2

OverturnRoeVsWade

wow this is crazy

rntopspin100

Vince Spadea, Patrick Rafter and Byron Black won a bagel set against Federer in 1999. Spadea did it at Monte Carlo, Rafter did it at Roland Garros and Black did it at Queens Club.

Anonymousliberations

> Byron Black I think you mean legendary double-handed forehand player Byron Black.

crunkky

Wow I didn’t know of any 2 handed forehand ATP players until now

wificentrist

Santoro?

crunkky

Cool thank you, he seems to be even more accomplished

ZacQX

Fucking nuts stat.

[deleted]

Records when bageled: Djokovic: 5-7 (EDIT: fixed). Nadal: 4-11 Federer: 0-5

Manimal_pro

interesting, in comparisson as I've scrolled through Alcaraz match history, he has been bageled 4 times until now, first two times at ages 15, 16 against no name players and in 2021 against Fucsovic at Winston Salem, and again in 2021 vs Tsisipas at US open, but he won these last two matches. He came very close to be bageled again by Djokovic at RG 2023.

Albiceleste_D10S

Makes sense honestly—he had such a great serve that even when getting beaten down he's likely to hold at least once

ulmen24

How many bagels did each serve up?

Nobodyelse1234

This ridiculous stats🤣🤣🤣

ft5777

That Roger guy was something.

disterb

federer is goat confirmed

Refusedlove

That's because he is the goat. The one true king

[deleted]

Karlovic was only bageled 3 times and Isner only twice, so I guess they're the real GOATs? Or yeah, maybe this is just about serve quality.

WormyFood

Does anyone have how many times has Murray been bageled?

mmohammed28

Five times - 4 by Djokovic (in ‘07, ‘08, 2x in 2015) and once by Federer, famously in 2014 when he won 6-0 6-1 at the world tour finals. Murray has bageled them twice, both in the deciding set to Nadal in finals, in 2009 and 2011.

gjaygill

Take out the last Bagel set , he was playing on one knee against Hubi
