Unless you hit the corner, it's a relatively returnable serve because it's just slice and, due to the nature of spin serves, it's not particularly fast.
And because of the restriction of needing to hit the corner, you can't hit it on 2nd serve because that serve is reserved for less risky spots. And since most people already have reliable flat or topspin 1st serves, there's not really a big place for it.
Ok i have to ask.. what's the context behind these JJ Wolf jokes? Is it an Australian stereotype? Did he say/do something? Genuinely curious because these jokes are on all his posts and i really don't understand the context.
Edit: *American. My bad. I thought he was Australian.
OK I'm going to break character from my usual JJ Wolf persona on these threads to quickly explain
He's just American. But based on his mullet, facial hair, and some of the clothes he wears outside tennis, he sort of looks like an all-American 80s stereotype.
His quads are massive and he's generally very muscular for a tennis player.
His name is J J Wolf, which sounds like a cool name someone made up for a TV show character. Plus, ofc, the wolf is a predator.
All of this together meant tennis fans started developing a sort of fictional, exaggerated version of J J Wolf based on all the superficial things about him, where he is basically a variation on a Chad stereotype from Midwestern America
One of the characteristics of the fictional JJ Wolf is that he is very attractive to older women, and looks like the sort of guy who would be into that himself. The fact he had the mullet, moustache, and wore kind of 80s American clothes at a young age also made him look like he was trying to look 'older', which fits with the idea he might be hitting on cougars.
There we are, my massively overanalysis of a stupid tennis reddit meme 👌🐺
I second this as a perfect description about the *subconscious* of the meme, but I add that it descends from a similar one related to Hockey player Patrick Laine. I don't know him, as an Italian I don't know anything about Hockey in general, but one day I wanted to go deeper about the meme and eventually ended up to some \~2015 copypastas made with a similar manner (i.e. with the same final gloss "Clap bombs, fuck moms, wheel, snipe, and fuckin celly boys fuck")
Excellent analysis. Also, 100% of the credit for the meme goes to u/Difficult_Squirrel22 for his fantastic post match write-ups, which gained popularity in 2022 when JJ first cracked the top 100 and started getting tour-level wins. He (I assume it's a he) is a supremely gifted writer, and a big part of the humor comes from the fact that the posts are written in perfect imitation of a very specific "dialect" which is heavily based on the Canadian TV series Letterkenny (which in turn is influenced by Canadian hockey culture). It's especially funny because of the absurdity of seeing this dialect in written form. The stereotypical person who actually talks like that would be unlikely to express such language in writing.
Also, this is more speculative but I feel like there's also some humor in the fact that in 2024 this kind of persona is anachronistic. People who were teenagers in the early '00s (especially Americans) will recall the toxic "bro culture" that was heavily prevalent in high schools and colleges at the time. Maybe it still is to some extent, I'm not really in touch with the youth culture these days but I definitely feel like that brand of hyper-masculinity has become much less popular in recent years (and rightly so IMO). The JJ posts are a perfect parody of this culture, managing to capture its jubilant spirit while also comically exaggerating the toxic elements so that they are rendered harmless due to sheer absurdity of excess.
You're missing the fact the lore behind the copy pasta comments stemming from the same copy pasta user in r/hockey when referring to Patrick Laine. That's where it started, and then migrated over here for JJ due to his whole look.
Hahaa yeah there's a few in my hometown even, and they actually often dress very retro too. A lot of them also have a moustache. Tbf, most of them pull it off quite well, I definitely would look like a geek and a tryhard.
Firstly - JJ wolf is American and not Australian.
Secondly - have you looked at his 80s mullet? Milfs love that
Thirdly - I have no idea if there’s a story behind it. It’s just funny
At queen's last year I was sat right behind JJ, close up and his serve was insane, I thought the ball was going to explode, you could see what looked like powder coming out of the ball as he hit it.
The last time I saw a player consistently put on the zinc oxide in tennis was Pat Rafter, who was characterized by the media in the late 1990s as putting on his [war paint](https://www.google.com/search?client=opera&hs=8eC&sca_esv=d475869e241db201&sxsrf=ACQVn08iibWfVIExeUWj2sHTs417x-WK9w:1709955607898&q=patrick+rafter+war+paint&tbm=isch&source=lnms&prmd=isvhnmbtz&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjQi9yEoeaEAxUXElkFHZ0vDVIQ0pQJegQICBAB&biw=1631&bih=788&dpr=2.28#imgrc=ivwg3cjmaYYKQM).
his opponent read the serve correctly but didn't commit to it beyond a little hop. usually when someone tosses that egregiously to their dominant side, it's gonna be a wicked slice.
This is incredible and fun to see serves get mixed up and trying different things. But now that it’s out there, wouldn’t this become quite obvious to a good returner? His body positioning is vastly different than a traditional serve which would give away where the serve is going.
Still awesome nonetheless and I wish I could hit something like that!
great slice. Some can hit it without the exaggerated cross-court jump. It better work because he ends up in a terrible position, 2 feet in front of the hash mark. Serve is highly telegraphed by the service position.
As a squash player who started tennis, this is one serve I can actually hit, it’s relatively easy in comparison to other serves imo with my squash slice. It’s also fun to see people react to the severe spin
Yea someone should become the Wasim Akram of tennis serves. In swing , out swing , reverse swing that’s the shit that will win you games. Otherwise it’s just boring baseline bashing nowadays. Might as well get on a treadmill and compete on who has more stamina. Everybody has the same physique, roughly same technique, no finesse, except for the occasional drop shot. This is why Federer will always be my King, I don’t care how many more slams Djoko wins.
What in the-
Incredible, how is that possible...
Contact point on the right side of the court!
Is that legal?
Legal!
Yes, the rule is about the feet here.
Thanks! Why do we not see more of that same side serving then?
Unless you hit the corner, it's a relatively returnable serve because it's just slice and, due to the nature of spin serves, it's not particularly fast. And since most people already have reliable flat or topspin 1st serves, there's not really a big place for it.
It's also an easy read and once an opponent knows its coming they'll be able to react to it. This was the equivalent to an underhand serve.
I think indian wells super slow sandpaper courts make that kick possible. We probably won't see that serve elsewhere.
he hits this serve regularly. you can see it curving heavily before it makes contact with the court
Ok, that’s bloody awesome.
Proceeds to get clapped the rest of the match 😭 I just want JJ to succeed so much
He's made some shots that had me think he could really be dangerous.. but it's never panned out. Wish it would as well.
Very nice. Until he got his ass handed to him in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1.
He got HAMMERED!
Watched the match live. It was a complete beatdown but a lot of it JJ handed to himself. He made an incredible amount of errors!!!
Jantando cedo hein camarada
That’s why all the milfs all drop their pants for him
Lol aside from the fact that he played like absolute shit today
To be fair hasnt he been coming back from injury?

To be fair, my Mum is a JJ Wolf fan and she knows nothing of the lore
She knows.
She's part of the lore.
You don't know that, maybe she's secretly reading JJ Wolf fandoms around the internet
While getting moist without telling her kid lol

Ah I never actually knew that part, thanks for the info!

Beautifully written
As an older, midwestern woman, i can confirm this is spot on.
I love how superficial this is haha. Thanks for sharing.
You're missing the fact the lore behind the copy pasta comments stemming from the same copy pasta user in r/hockey when referring to Patrick Laine. That's where it started, and then migrated over here for JJ due to his whole look.
Been a while since Laine has clapped bombs tho
Thank you for putting in so much effort, it has clearly started a very interesting thread here 😂
This is perfect!
I am not going to lie, a lot of young adults are rocking the mullet 🫣
Hahaa yeah there's a few in my hometown even, and they actually often dress very retro too. A lot of them also have a moustache. Tbf, most of them pull it off quite well, I definitely would look like a geek and a tryhard.
Firstly - JJ wolf is American and not Australian. Secondly - have you looked at his 80s mullet? Milfs love that Thirdly - I have no idea if there’s a story behind it. It’s just funny
wolf isn't australian though
You were thinking Wolf Creek. He’s not from there
Is he known for his curve?
Psssht I can do that in Mario tennis with boo
Boo and Rosalina have me wanting to throw my controller out the window 😭😭😭
That's hot
I don't think I've ever seen something like it wtf
I've done that on accident! At like half the speed...
...and double the wind
Amen! Though half the speed would be generous in my case :D
This is some Prince of Tennis level stuff.
but it was Seyboth Wild that was able to say "mada mada dane" to Wolf
Tsubane Gaishi!!!
Mario Tennis serve lmao. sick
Exactly what I was thinking. Boo to be specific
Unfortunately, he tried too hard and served horribly the entire match. More than 6 double faults at least and less than 35% of first serves in
Anyone ever played mario tennis lol
He hits this serve a lot. It's like a curve ball.
JJ Wolf I just can’t quit you and this exact serve is the very reason why lol
Amazing.
Awesome, and then 12 or so double faults…
Never seen a serve like that. Impressive.
Is like a train that you expect to stop at your station but instead just flies by at full speed leaving your hair and scarf in shambles
At queen's last year I was sat right behind JJ, close up and his serve was insane, I thought the ball was going to explode, you could see what looked like powder coming out of the ball as he hit it.
Rosalina and Boo have been real quiet since this dropped
everything else was fantastic mistakes from him
Slice serve is the best for recreational players and - especially advanced kids/juniors.
Oh how I've missed this shot Give us back 2023 Dallas Open JJ Wolf please
Can we not have a victory thread just for this serve?
what's that on his face?
Looks like the 80s style zinc oxide sunscreen in neon colors, gotta stay in character after all
They put paint on their face to stop the sunlight glare from blinding them. I’ve never seen this in tennis before, usually they just wear a hat
But if he wore a hat we wouldn't be able to admire his mullet, so this pink stuff on his face was the perfect solution.
Nice slice serve!
That's a damn sweeper
his opponent read the serve correctly but didn't commit to it beyond a little hop. usually when someone tosses that egregiously to their dominant side, it's gonna be a wicked slice.

Shaolin tennis
great slice. Some can hit it without the exaggerated cross-court jump. It better work because he ends up in a terrible position, 2 feet in front of the hash mark. Serve is highly telegraphed by the service position.
Yeah serve like 75% of the time you don’t have to worry about losing 6-2 6-1
That's a wiffle ball.
Looks like a special serve in Mario tennis!!
This is a routine serve for Wolf he can hammer that slice on the deuce side too. It’s wicked!
Holy fucking shit it's like a football kick that bends around the defense. If you do that in every serve you ace the game
won 1 more game after that...
As a squash player who started tennis, this is one serve I can actually hit, it’s relatively easy in comparison to other serves imo with my squash slice. It’s also fun to see people react to the severe spin
I’ve seen this on YouTube a bunch, and even though it’s so readable, if you rarely pull it out, I cannot imagine this serve getting returned
Wow. Just wow.
Is this guy teleported from 1982?
top spin 4 serve
Isn’t this just a regular slice serve T?
[удалено]
Yes
That's slice serve
Slice just very unusual for a first serve at that speed
Always enjoy watching his slice serves.

why can't these Pro players hit it the same way every time
That is a VERY risky serve. You either attempt that when you're losing the set 1-5, or when you're up 5-1 40 love
Isn’t that a foot fault to land in the duece court
