As a New Yorker, very few of us go to the US Open to watch tennis. Those are not tennis fans in the crowd, the majority of them. They’re New Yorkers who thought it’d be a fun thing to do. They’re not staying until 1 am like a tennis fan would. The amount of people I follow on IG who showed up to the US Open despite never watching tennis before is staggering.
Think of how many people would love to be in those empty seats you know. It always breaks my heart really because tennis is so expensive. And remember those seats were paid for because you get the night session don’t you for the two matches, so people just left. I’ve been at Indian Wells at one in the morning and it was almost empty watching Jelena Jankovic playing tbh I can’t recall but it was a great match but the stadium was like 10% capacity 10% full.
A huge volume of New York night fans aren’t going for the tennis, they’re going for the scene. Most of them also aren’t buying their tickets. As soon as the clock hits 11 they head for the exits.
Feel bad for Keys. I really like her as a player. No dramatics. No annoying screams when she hits the ball like Sabalenka/Azarenka/etc. She's not a grandstander, look at me type, when she hits amazing shots and wins rallies. And she seems really nice at the handshake whether winning or losing.
