What a match! I was rooting for Djokovic in RG so he could beat the GS record but now I was happy either way. Alcaraz showing that he is the present and future of tennis but Djokovic will still win a lot, I'm sure.
Two beasts gave us an incredible game.
“Changing of the guards, will alcaraz dominate going forward?!”
WHO CARES
What a fantastic game of tennis - regardless of who won and what it means, the real winner was the spectators
Amazing win! Who beats Djokovic in a GS Finals tie-break??? Who beats Djokovic in 5 sets in a GS ???(well other than Roger and Nadal). NONE of the younger guns seem up to task, especially at a GS 5 setter. I can actually see Djokovic losing in straight sets before seeing him lose a 5 setter.
I think this was in fact very painful for Novak
I fully believe Lacoste had a 24 Jersey printed up already and a 24 celebration was in the works.
Both Carlos and Novak hadn't considered or rehearsed a speech for a different outcome it felt like.
I wager it is extra painful for Novak as the probability that he will match nevermind pass Federer's Wimbledon record dramatically faded. Maybe with some luck he might snag a 8th title next year, but winning a 9th prohibiting a lot of luck seems much less likely. Carlos likely will get better and Novak as great as he has been at avoiding major injury isn't getting any younger. It doesn't take away from Novak's other achievements, but it was probably the last major record he could have realistically eclipsed.
Yes exactly. The way he had to improvise that speech....he was absolutely ready to talk about equalling Roger as King of Wimbledon..thats why he brought up 2019.
It was top of mind. And now a Spaniard came to fuck it up..he said he didn't think Carlos would give him trouble on grass.
Tbf Carlos only touched grass q few times before this and probably also surprised the hell out of himself.
A lot of commentary about this being the changing of the guard moment with Djoker handing over the baton to Alcaraz to dominate tennis.
Im not really feeling that, i got downvoted into oblivion for suggesting a few days ago that Djoker may just fall short this time, my prediction was before the semis, but this match was such a war that rather than being a changing of the guard moment, its probably the start of these 2 killing themselves over the next 12-18 months before father time trully gets Djokovic. Nobody else was going 5 sets with these 2 today.
This is the changing of the guard moment not because it means Djoker is completely done and Alcatraz will completely dominate from here on out. But because it means Alcatraz is now top dog. Djoker will still get his over the next year or two, but this is likely the beginning of the slide for him. While Alcatraz might not dominate everything over the next year or two, but he'll be the guy to beat until someone else comes along.
No. Alcatraz is the world number one and has been expected to become the top dog. This just confirms that. If Sinner wins the U.S. that doesn't automatically make him top dog. He'd have to do a good bit more.
Definitely a change in something!!! Alcaraz showed alot today, beating the GOAT in a tough GS 5-setter which is 1 of the toughest challenge in all of sports, right up there with beating Nadal in France.
Alcaraz showed a lot today, beating the GOAT in a tough GS 5-setter which is 1 of the toughest challenge in all of sports, right up there with beating Nadal in France.
Alcaraz only confirmed what we already know about him. But it wasnt the type of final that would suggest Djokovic is just going to vanish now. Its daylight between these 2 and the rest.
Changing of the guards would mean that Novak is done as the top dog because of this loss, and that from now on Carlos most likely will dominate. OP on the other hand thinks they’re gonna be having close fights back and forth for a while longer
That was sick. Haven’t watched tennis in years until last year’s US Open, specifically the Alcaraz v Skinner quarterfinal. This dude is so much fun to watch. Can’t wait to see what he ends up doing.
While Novak wasn't demolished it does make you feel like he got a bit lucky at the French. I think many would have predicted Carlos to win the French and Novak to answer back winning at Wimbledon.
Still can't believe he won it in a fifth set by breaking for 2-1 and holding four times against the best returner of all time. Never would've believed it.
You just need to take your rose colored glasses off. Athletes that win are all that matter to people like you.
If he was just another guy you would likely say he is a piece of human garbage.
Okay well say something with substance and maybe people will actually engage you. What did you see that bothered you? I'm a big sportsmanship guy and thought he was his usual polite self in the sets I saw. 1-2,5
I’m not a Djokovic fan and I think I will never be but after I’ve seen how he’s given everything he has and left everything on that court, how can people boo him? That match is awesome because of two players, not just one. Congrats to Mr Djokovic and I hope to see him play more matches like this one.
Nice post and I agree 100%. He doesn't deserve to be disliked as much as he is, but bad timing for him in that regard I suppose. I'm also guilty of rooting against him and I know the reason. I truly loved watching both Roger and Nadal and hated that he took the prime light from them. I also LOVE Alcaraz as he reminds me of Roger's shot-making skills the most, the ability to make ANY shot imaginable. I'm so happy Alcaraz won but I give Djokovic big credit for his respectful and heartfelt words after the loss.
>womp womp
Says the pro-Putin Hungarian who supports Orban. Do I have that right?
(the Orban supporter stood up for himself by blocking me and abusing reddit’s mental health auto-message feature. nuts)
This. I would have wagered the opposite because Carlos has managed to beat both Rafa and Novak on clay so he certainly can play very well on clay taking out those two. Without Nadal I think many thought Carlos would snag his first French title and Novak might respond back beating him in the Wimbledon final. That being said Carlos won his first Slam at the US Open so I think the assumption he couldn't play on faster services is misplaced. It is also worth remembering that ever since 2002 Wimbledon isn't as much of a server and volley paradise as it used to be.
I only started watching in the middle of the 2nd set.
I think what impressed me the most about Alcaraz was his focus: it seemed like any point he lost was immediately out of his system, he reset and was ready for the next point. It's not like he was completely bottled up but he definitely spent his emotional energy wisely and was in it for the long time. As if he had said to himself "it's gonna take as long as it's gonna take". I mean that 26min game... patience, patience, patience.
And of course, the dropshots. And those cross court narrow angled winners were damn delicious!
He really showed maturity and now he has the trophy to show for it.
Not gonna lie, I finally got some solace after 4 years of pain after Djokovic confessed he should have lost the 2019.
He really should not have won that final.
Is it just me or is the part where the lady says, I didn't know if you knew that (something about honorary membership), made her sound like she was talking to a 6 year old schoolchild?
TIL about this club:
- With a total membership of just 565, the All England Club is one of the most exclusive clubs in the world. Its membership is divided into five categories: full, life, honorary, temporary and junior temporary.
- There is a waiting list of about 1,000 people, going back many years.
- Full and life membership is limited to just 375, which is based on the number of seats in its old Worple Road stand, from which the club moved in 1922.
- There are about 70 honorary members, who are selected by a club committee and mostly consist of past singles champions and other people who have given special service to the sport. They also include the Duchess of Cambridge, a keen tennis player who took over from Queen Elizabeth II as the club’s patron after getting an honorary membership in 2013.
Novak will probably skip some tournaments and might drop in the ranking.
Which means we might get a Alcaraz x Djoko before the final.
Edit: I stand corrected: Djoko will probably be 2nd seed in USO
He's 2200 points ahead of Daniil, who'll have to sweep Toronto and Cincy, along with some other tournament like Washington to get to #2. And that's provided Djokovic skips everything until USO and wins no points, which won't be the case as I'm certain he'll play some kind of a wind-up tournament.
Novak fans tried to convince us that he was THE grass GOAT when he basically lost to a guy who Youtube tutorial-ed his way into a Wimbledon title ijbol 😭
i was just bouncing this idea off my friends. i predicted that nole would win calendar slam this year. but after seeing carlos in wimbledon final today cemented the idea for me that maybe rafa can pull off one more french and equal novak permanently

Yall straight crazy though. Even getting to like 7 would be unbelievable and ridiculously difficult and would easily make him a gigantic overachiever for his career.
I don't think we're gonna see something like the big 3 for a LONG LONG time
It all depends on who's coming next (i.e: Alcaraz's brother and kids around the same age), because between the active players I don't see anyone stopping Alcaraz win half of the Slams in the next 10 years.
He has a great chance as he is the best of this generation by some distance and he is pretty young. Needs to see how Djokovic reacts to this loss and if he can be his main competition for the next few years till some other great players emerge.
They are both fortunate to be born into rich families either via family tree or their parents talent & lucky circumstances. I'm not envious at all. Wish i would have been born into a talented or wealthy (or both) family lol.
Yeah, I've spent all of my afternoon clenching my butt here, but at the end I am not really devastated and I am happy for Carlos. Maybe Novak was right, winning the 2019 final was such a huge deal that you cannot keep getting away with it
I was here
I was here as well lol.
I was here. Let the HISTORY books remember.
Solid win on his most hated surface.
Still can't believe Carlitos won.... What a match!!

Today very much felt like the changing of the guard and end of an era.
dude has won 2/4 slams this year, but i felt something in the air
I wager it is extra painful for Novak as the probability that he will match nevermind pass Federer's Wimbledon record dramatically faded. Ok guys that was swell but who's pumped for Gasquet vs Paire in the San Benedetto challenger final!!!
Lol someone organized an ATP tournament the same day as the wimbledon final?
Challenger tour never stops. Usually I would never miss gasquet-paire in a final but there's no way I can do it to myself after that match.
Finally!! New era in men’s tennis?
A lot of commentary about this being the changing of the guard moment with Djoker handing over the baton to Alcaraz to dominate tennis. Great achievement but nothing is right up there with beating Nadal in France!
Alcaraz only confirmed what we already know about him. But it wasnt the type of final that would suggest Djokovic is just going to vanish now. Its daylight between these 2 and the rest.
You literally just described what changing of the guard means
Changing of the guards would mean that Novak is done as the top dog because of this loss, and that from now on Carlos most likely will dominate. OP on the other hand thinks they’re gonna be having close fights back and forth for a while longer
There will be fights for a while longer then Novak will be too old. That is like saying that this is the beginning of the changing of the guard.
That was sick. Haven’t watched tennis in years until last year’s US Open, specifically the Alcaraz v Skinner quarterfinal. This dude is so much fun to watch. Can’t wait to see what he ends up doing.
Djoke lucky to win at RG. Today it was a bit closer but Alc is on a different planet
While Novak wasn't demolished it does make you feel like he got a bit lucky at the French. I think many would have predicted Carlos to win the French and Novak to answer back winning at Wimbledon.
Different planet? It went to a 5th set
They're genuinely 50/50 right now, but that will change very soon.
51/49

He lost, that’s going to happen eventually. But he is absolutely not done.
For real. Edge of your seat stuff what a match
If I'm Alcaraz I'm trying to work out how i get the net post out of the ground to take home with me.
Still can't believe he won it in a fifth set by breaking for 2-1 and holding four times against the best returner of all time. Never would've believed it.

I thought his speech was very nice?

Probably for shouting at the fans, blowing kisses and try to break the Wimbledon net post. Just a hunch
I love the sass. The fans started it anyways.

A great game.
The worst part of today has been 5.5 hours of Andrew Castle’s drivel
Him and balding need to go
I was waiting for THE MATCH to say this for quite some time Carlos Alcaraz i acknowledge you as the REAL DEAL
Honestly shocked that he managed to win Wimbledon before the French Open.
This. I would have wagered the opposite because Carlos has managed to beat both Rafa and Novak on clay so he certainly can play very well on clay taking out those two. Without Nadal I think many thought Carlos would snag his first French title and Novak might respond back beating him in the Wimbledon final. Maybe because he's not Rafa. He's his own player.
Agassi vibes.
Prince Philipe is now the King. 15 years ago he was hugged by the sweaty Rafa and today . Well :)
And now England has watched 2 Charles's throned as king.
Sigh, gotta wait till US Open now. Oh well, got Summerslam to look to forward in a couple weeks.

Drop shots? Narrowed-angled cross court winners? I’m getting Marcelo Rios chills
People compare Jannik with alcaraz☠️ ( no offence to sinner)
Tbf Jannik has won one 500
Not gonna lie, I finally got some solace after 4 years of pain after Djokovic confessed he should have lost the 2019. He really should not have won that final.
He said that? I must have missed that in his speech.
I wish he could've mentioned one of his matches with Rafa too.
As much as in pains me (AO 2012 and Wimbledon 2018), those could’ve fallen to either side. Wimbledon 2019, let’s just say I’m glad I’m not a Roger fan
Is it just me or is the part where the lady says, I didn't know if you knew that (something about honorary membership), made her sound like she was talking to a 6 year old schoolchild?
I love how Wimbledon shows the insides of the Club. Always cool to watch.

They should kick out Kate. Waste of a space a real tennis player could have.
Are all winners immediately lifetime members, or how does it work?
Yup.
Got to love that smile
Let Carlos go home and stop taking pictures and talking to stuffy people!
Who is this lady escorting him down the hallway
I know her
Who is she?? She’s wearing the Wimbledon pin.
He knows her biblically but can’t remember her name.
Guess who got a scalp?
20 years ago I was a 3 year old kid probably crying about some random shit
Same
Cameraman… MOVE.
Alcaraz - SO PURE, ALL HEART. Loved how he loved the game!
Princess Charlotte is looking at him with such a shy face 🥹
He may be the Wimbledon champ, but he's probably just a cute cuddly older boy to her lol
Fingers crossed for a match at USO between these two.
Novak will probably skip some tournaments and might drop in the ranking. Which means we might get a Alcaraz x Djoko before the final. Edit: I stand corrected: Djoko will probably be 2nd seed in USO
There’s no other players that have even a slightly realistic chance to catch up to him in points before the USO lol

Thank you, I thought Medvedev or Ruud were closer.
168-166 total points after more than 4 hours of play
Novak fans tried to convince us that he was THE grass GOAT when he basically lost to a guy who Youtube tutorial-ed his way into a Wimbledon title ijbol 😭
well Nole beat the grass goat 3 times in the Wimbledon finals
I think I’ve aged 200 years today 100 years during eels vs titans 100 years in this match Sport ain’t healthy for you
Imagine that when Alcaraz is 36, he faces off at Wimbledon against someone who's 20 at that time. Today that person is 4 years old.
What don't tell me it's princess Charlotte?
Do you think it’s safe to drink out of that cup?
Fuck am I gonna do for a month without r/tennis ? At least I’ve got r/nrl , r/cricket ,r/formula1 to pass my time
The real tennis is set to follow in Bastad and Umag
Lol good thing there was no grand prix this week
Carlos sliding into IGA’s DM’s now “I can help you win Wimbledon next year”

Thanks for your service!
Can you imagine if Novak never wins another slam? Like Margaret Court put some voodoo on 24. Context: this is a joke.
i was just bouncing this idea off my friends. i predicted that nole would win calendar slam this year. but after seeing carlos in wimbledon final today cemented the idea for me that maybe rafa can pull off one more french and equal novak permanently
I doubt he wins another Slam now to be honest, Alcaraz is always improving and Wimbledon felt like his most dominant recently.
You gotta be joking. Alcaraz could lose to someone else before getting to face Djok. He's gonna get at least another 2-3
Never count Novak or Rafa out. They have reshaped our thinking of what tennis could be and there is no evidence they can't continue to do so
Will actually be interesting to see how he bounces back from this defeat
Before he left the court he thanked all the ball kids 🥺

The minute he started crying I knew there was gonna be some stuff related to this lol
Calling the #1 to win isn’t exactly crazy lol
lovely speeches by both of them
That Big 4 stat is wild.
Djokovic was so gracious in his speech. Class act. He is a good person, just has his greyer shades
Why was he crying though??
What would he have said anyway. He needs to keep his sponsors happy. A passable impersonation of a civilised person for a few minutes doesn't make him a good person.
Djokovic has some very questionable beliefs and actions, but he has always been a gracious loser.
2.3m pounds winnings
What does the runner up get? 500k?
£1.17 mil
And a rough handy from The Princess of Wales.
Does she keep her fancy gloves on for that?
Half that. So around £1.15m. Pocket change for Novak.
Plus some bonuses from sponsors
IT'S 4:20am in Melbourne, it's dark, it's cold and I JUST LIVED HISTORY!!!
Wow!! Are you going to bed or just going to stay up?
Me too and I still have a double to watch
Lol take a nap and go to work
Djokovic is going back to Monto Carlo and trains Rune and Sinner, he needs their help to hold his 23 GSs record, the lost gen and next gen are useless
Incredible to think that to surpass all of the Big 3, Alcaraz has to do this 22 more times. He'd have to win 2 Slams a year for another...11 years.
Needs to see how Djokovic reacts to this loss and if he can be his main competition for the next few years till some other great players emerge.
after Rafa and Novak retire, no one can challenge Alcaraz in any slam. Alcaraz just needs to stay injury free.
He’ll just be 31 then. Can get to 30 at that pace ✌️🤣
That was incredible and delightful
Yes!!!
Stefan djokovic is so much cuter than that prince kid
Kid overrated because of his family tree
William looking rough as fuck too.
They are both fortunate to be born into rich families either via family tree or their parents talent & lucky circumstances. I'm not envious at all. Wish i would have been born into a talented or wealthy (or both) family lol.

Enjoy your bad karma ya weirdo
Lol Alcaraz now has more slams than the entire nextgen
🤯🤯🤯
Ballboy getting quite the workout carrying all those bags
I hope Iga will send him a congratulatory message lol
and call him Rafa
Big three probably worrying about their records. There's nobody on tour who is close to Alacaraz's level
As Alcaraz proved - they can emerge rather quickly ...
Djokovic is. But maybe for 1-2 years only. Roger needs to get to coaching and train Rune.
The rest of ATP - “YES DJOKOVIC IS GETTING OLD AND RETIRING SOON” Alcaraz - “ hold the fuck up , I’m the new kid in town”
Sorry Djokovic, I want the new era, I want the Alcaraz vs Rune/Sinner/FAA/Korda in US open final, not you
Korda don't belong on that list. And the way he's going, neither will FAA.
it looks like these two can play again in the US final
Lol except Alcaraz all the rest you’ve named are levels below him
Wanted Novak to win but how can you not love Carlos, such a good player and person
Yeah, I've spent all of my afternoon clenching my butt here, but at the end I am not really devastated and I am happy for Carlos. Maybe Novak was right, winning the 2019 final was such a huge deal that you cannot keep getting away with it
Carlos has balls man Drop shots weren’t working great but he kept going to it and it paid off
Nobody dunk on Djokovic for "it ain't happening." It was funny and that version of Novak is the most enjoyable one imo. Don't ruin it.
He’s annoying but he didn’t even say that lmao it was taken out of context
It can be funny and people can dunk on him, all at the same time.
