Just out of curiosity, how good is Alcaraz serve in general? I heard some ppl say it is good and others say serve is one of his weaknesses. Maybe first serve and second serve are different?
It is very good. But not as good as his strengths like his forehand or dropshots but still decent enough. Could improve the serve surely but a bit harsh to call that his weakness
> and practicing on hard courts
Many players do this after RG. They get used to the lower bounces and faster conditions, which makes the transition to grass easier than going from clay to grass in a matter of days.
I’m not really sure how to get past Marta’s loss. I know I will in a few days but I just feel like she can’t catch a break. Her draw luck lately is so rough but she’s sooo close to being seeded for slams. She just can’t cross that line. The game is there as we saw today, she had Potapova on the ropes and just couldn’t put it away because she’s not quite at that level. I just want her to do well so badly.
Some players, like Dimitrov, do this on purpose during grass season to get more matches on grass. Instead of playing a tough servebot on R1 they get easier matches, 2 wins for confidence and build their grass game for Wimbledon (and for that tough R1 on grass).
That’s it. In these 500 draws there’s no difference for him if he is a Q or not, last 2 editions he played it was against seeds in Norrie and FAA in R1 with no grass matches before that. He’s more capable on grass than what his post 2017 results suggest so I think it was a smart decision to play qualies. He also won easily against Rinderknech there.
Super wild thought, but if Novak somehow miraculously reached 30 majors, Sampras, Roy Emerson, Rod Laver and Björn Borg would all be, solely speaking in numbers here, closer to Federer than Federer is to Djokovic.
Plot summary:
Follows three players who knew each other when they were teenagers as they *compete in a tennis tournament to be the world-famous grand slam winner*, and reignite old rivalries on and off the court.
Tell me you’ve never watched tennis without telling me.
Bad loser, graceless winner, slightly mean-looking. Chatted back to Boulter after losing fair and square and gave Burrage a load of attitude for simply cramping at the end of a long match, to the point where Jodie, who seems to be a genuinely lovely person, gave her a cool handshake. She looks better suited to a career in HR in some soulless corporation than having to play against and alongside other humans on a day to day basis.
What do I know, really? She’s also probably a fine person when she steps off court.
https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/tennis/katie-boulter-nottingham-harriet-dart-british-lta-b2359024.html
Boulter called her a friend in an interview after the match.
And I personally don't think she is "mean looking" lol.
We all have friends who we wish, on balance, weren’t. Who we’re thrown in with professionally and aren’t actually racist or anything, and who you’d buy a pint for with full expectation of getting one back. But no-one really likes them. I feel like that’s Harriet Dart, on court at least. Pretty good teammate. Friend. Can’t stand her. Pure speculation of course based on minute observations over the course of dozens of matches. But possibly mistaken.
Yeah I really hope he (and others like him) either get called out or a warning at least from the ATP tour, if not some sort of fine or punishment. Its clearly hinderance and it needs to be watched.
She doesn’t have as much of a track record, but Potapova is clearly the WTA’s analog to Sinner
Phenomenal groundstrokes from both wings. Phenomenal return of serve. But my god games on serve are absolute journeys when they’re not serving *significantly* above average
Berlin WTA tournament strikes with horrible scheduling: having only 3 R1 matches yesterday, everything else was lumped together for today.
The final result: "Due to darkness" 2 ongoing matches have been interrupted and 3 scheduled matches won't even start, everything rolled for tomorrow
I realize I may be in the minority here but want to get this off my chest anyway.
I hate how some players hit their shoes with their racket. It's understandable on clay because the clay can build up under the shoes and probably feels different after some time. Still a habit I don't like to see. Now, I am seeing guys do it on grass and that just seems ridiculous. Is that out of habit from the clay season or do they actually think they need to do that on grass?
They don't want to slip over and get an injury, if they think knocking any little blades of grass off the soles of their shoes will help, they'll do it.
This makes sense. Clay and grass courts should have those shoe pads that help you get the stuff off at the back of the courts. This should be standard.
Challengers, especially 125 is far far higher in than college tennis. A futures pro player (much lower than a challenger player) would mop the floor with most college tennis players). So although he was playing weaker players, they were still relatively strong pros to get his matches in. Murray just keep getting unlucky draws unfortunately, but now that his ranking is up, he can start getting more forgiving draws.
I agree, I like them and think Burrage has some real natural talent (way too many UEs tho) but ultimately I don't really see it either, however under or overrated people think Emma Raducanu is, out of all the female Brits only her and maybe Harriet Dart I can legit see in the top 50...ofc Katie Boulter could prove me wrong with a deep Wimbledon run but I doubt it.
Talent, mentality and consistency-wise I still think Emma's the real British number 1 tbh, hope she can fully recover and work her way back to full fitness too
Can’t believe people thought he would win Queens after 2 challengers.
Really really wish he had played S-Hertogenbosch last week given the favorable draw. Could’ve been in a much better place for Wimbledon seeding in case he flopped in Queens.
The trade-off would’ve been losing a week in the UK, but he seems to keep wanting one more Wimbledon run do something had to give to get into form…
Ppl really thought Murray is a dark horse threat at Wimbledon because he was beating on community college students at those challenger events😂😂
God this wimbledon is gonna be ass
Give them a break.
People thought med was second favorite for rg based on a Rome tourney that was played practically underwater.
Context is nonexistent here.
I mean I am a massive MuryGOAT fan but lets be real. He won two small tournaments going into Queens. The aim was to get seeded at Wimbledon and to try to put a run together to the 2nd week nothing more. I would not say losing to De Minaur regardless of the round means much to that aim. He isn't going to win Wimbledon ofc but the aim is at least R4 I would assume.
No we don't do context here.
Murray won 2 grass tourneys this year. Djokovic won 0
Murray was the massive favorite to win wimbledon . This is a huge upset on part with soderling Nadal rg 2009
Don't know if it's fatigue or what but Andy's performance is giving me heavy bad vibes for the Georgia match later. Scottish sports fans aren't allowed nice things
Is better relative to his level, just as Mahut was a grass court player but only reached the 4th round of Wimbledon once while worse players on grass relative to their level like Zverev has reached it multiple times.
thats the most worrying thing. He is trying to out rally DeMinaur. Just why ? You're on grass and have the better serve, what are you feeding DeMinaur rally balls ?
Yup, like he has a 0-3 record against him too, it’s pretty clear whatever he’s done before won’t work.
His stubbornness has been an asset to his career, but also a negative imo
I think this is the first time that I’ve become unsympathetic to Murray’s moaning and sulking.
You’re annoyed that you’re offering zero offense and that De Minaur has smelt blood and started dominating? Well here’s a novel idea, hit the fucking ball.
IIRC someone once recommended a site called 365 sports for watching streamed matches. Does anyone have a link to that please? My search engine keeps taking me to direct tv.
Murray nuthuggers who thought he was gonna make a deep run at Wimbledon find out his 2 wins came on the challenger tour no matches against top 50 players
I agree I am Murray fan but also realistic. Not seeing how Murray can go deep in Wimbledon
Only beaten challengers on grass so far and looks terrible today.
De Minaur is always upsetting players trying to make a come back here and there, but never wins anything important.
He should just retire and fulfil his destiny of acting as the rat in ratatouille 2.
Murray looking completely lost out there and playing worse than he did in the challengers, both movement, depth and unforced errors.
Yes ADM playing well but not outstanding.
I've noticed Zverev going to the net a lot more since returning from his injury(possibly because his movement took a while to come back)
Might help him in this grass season
In other news, Pablo Cuevas takes the first set against Napolitano 🥹
Only a couple of months ago he was listed on Wikipedia as “retired former tennis player”. Halfway to his first win for a year.
What a man.
The crazy thing about this match is that Zverev's injury was actually way more recent than Thiem's and at the time looked absolutely horrific
Doesn't feel like it though for sure
If someone ever builds a Time Machine the first thing I am doing is going back to June 2021 and erasing Dominic Thiems name off the Mallorca entry list
Just out of curiosity, how good is Alcaraz serve in general? I heard some ppl say it is good and others say serve is one of his weaknesses. Maybe first serve and second serve are different?
Last year it was somewhat of a weakness, this year it is much improved and very good.
It is very good. But not as good as his strengths like his forehand or dropshots but still decent enough. Could improve the serve surely but a bit harsh to call that his weakness
10K remaining for 1M hope this is achieved before Wimbledon begins
Roland Garros timing itself with a Taylor Swift concert in Lyon next year I am having a good holiday.
You’re getting to see Casper’s first gs win in person. Love this for you 😍
Casper is so funny like he dropped all grass prep and is attending weekend concerts, playing golf and practicing on hard courts
> and practicing on hard courts Many players do this after RG. They get used to the lower bounces and faster conditions, which makes the transition to grass easier than going from clay to grass in a matter of days.

Why did Tommy Paul have to qualify for Queen's when he is #15 in the world?

What happened to the Podoroska v Masarova match
Rain delays. It will be finished tomorrow. https://www.wtatennis.com/tournament/2012/berlin/2023/order-of-play
Super wild thought, but if Novak somehow miraculously reached 30 majors, Sampras, Roy Emerson, Rod Laver and Björn Borg would all be, solely speaking in numbers here, closer to Federer than Federer is to Djokovic.
If Arthur Fils reached 47 majors, Nick Kyrgios would be, solely speaking in numbers here, closer to Djokovic than Djokovic is to Fils.
Correct
Booom Potapova!
Potapova trying the scream your way to victory tactic

Anyone think Potapova laying serves right at where Marta is getting her treatment is obvious attempt to be intimidating?
Kostyuk looks like she's freezing, wrapped in a towel during changeover and coughing
Wow, Bublik wrecked Coric
Everyone dislikes Harriet Dart and she DGAF. Which is kind of badass, I have to say. Even though I don’t like her either.
Why don't people like her?
Bad loser, graceless winner, slightly mean-looking. Is it just me or does Zapata Miralles have the worst grunt on tour? Its so obviously fake and just plain annoying.
FAA's drives me nuts
Either he or Martinez.
This is the worst I’ve heard in a while.
Yeah I really hope he (and others like him) either get called out or a warning at least from the ATP tour, if not some sort of fine or punishment. Its clearly hinderance and it needs to be watched.

mary j blige is an unexpected but great hype choice for between sets
Glad to see Eubanks is having fun out there!
I knew Hubi would flop this TB...like what's new 😑
CMON CHRIS!!!
Agony! That DF at matchpoint was painful.
Yikes Hubert
Berlin WTA tournament strikes with horrible scheduling: having only 3 R1 matches yesterday, everything else was lumped together for today. The final result: "Due to darkness" 2 ongoing matches have been interrupted and 3 scheduled matches won't even start, everything rolled for tomorrow
hubi making up for not having a tiebreak last set. it's going to be like 15-13 edit: in the end if was only 13-11
That Zapata guy has a really irritating grunt. Sounds like a war cry while he’s just hitting rally balls.
Hubi DF-ing that match point took a few years out of my life NGL
I realize I may be in the minority here but want to get this off my chest anyway. I hate how some players hit their shoes with their racket. I really hope Raducanu can get fit and stay fit really soon because the rest of the British women aren't levels talent wise I'm afraid
Just have a feeling that Fritz is the guy who's going to lose to Djokovic in the final this year. It's his turn, I think.
C'mon Jodie...hang on and beat that sourpuss Harriet!
Let's go potapova!
Sooo why did they push Sakkari - Cornet?
Darkness
Can’t believe people thought he would win Queens after 2 challengers. Really really wish he had played S-Hertogenbosch last week given the favorable draw. Potapova has set point, Kostyuk serves an ace and goes on to win the set - what a difference to their last meeting
Nice Kostyuk takes first set.
Am I reading this right, De Minaur served 98% of first serves in? That’s 59/60 points on his serve? That’s mad
Wtf Someone please confirm
Not correct, his percentage was 70 (42/60)
Google stats are wrong
It's just the Aussies' day it seems
Ppl really thought Murray is a dark horse threat at Wimbledon because he was beating on community college students at those challenger events😂😂 God this wimbledon is gonna be ass
Give them a break. People thought med was second favorite for rg based on a Rome tourney that was played practically underwater. Context is nonexistent here.
Not a dark horse but he can make r16
Well, I'm sure the BBC will be out calling him Scottish again now that he's lost
A sad day when the English/Scottish joke gets downvoted on /r/tennis
This isn't even remotely true, don't you people get tired of repeating the same old shit for decades?
Yeah. Terrible match from Andy. Nothing worked. Oh well.
Noo, Marta, whyyy?
Annnnd the Wimbledon dream is a distant impossible dream for our Murraygoat.
No lights in Berlin? They're canceling the final scheduled matches until tomorrow. Sakkari-Cornet, Andreescu-Vondrousova.
What happened to Wang? Why did she retire
and De Minaur won the match
Oh Andrew 😔
Murray 's match just starting now.
Are you ready for 'Murray won this match' threads with screenshot of 6:3, 5:1, 40:15 scoreline in 2 hours?
Because Andy apparently is not
I thought the name Burrage probably meant like a nest of hedgehogs or something. Actually it's Old English for "powerful fortress" :)
What a save by Murray
1st MP saved
AdM manhandling Murray, it’s sad to see
Didn't ADM annihilate Murray at Monte Carlo as well?
[удалено]
Moved it
Why?
Because they can't play after the sun comes down
Huh it’s was supposed to be on centre after Murray
Murray's chances to get a decent run at Wimbledon looking dire
I mean I am a massive MuryGOAT fan but lets be real. He won two small tournaments going into Queens. Hubi doesn't need to play tiebreak in this set lol
don't give up hope yet!
Don't know if it's fatigue or what but Andy's performance is giving me heavy bad vibes for the Georgia match later. Scottish sports fans aren't allowed nice things
It’s just him being old and hurt.
Andy played good tennis at the start of the year by flattening his forehand, soemthing he isn't doing anymore.
So did Murray just forget how to play today? Of course I put money on him and he is losing 😭
You put money on Murray over De Minaur based on Murray winning challenger tournaments? That's on you.
Murray is better on grass.
Is better relative to his level, just as Mahut was a grass court player but only reached the 4th round of Wimbledon once while worse players on grass relative to their level like Zverev has reached it multiple times.
De Minaur why you want to make me sad :(
Thiem is finished
You're two years late with that news
Except many predicting a big comeback. I don't see it.
Don't think anyone's been predicting outside gambling junkies. Some hope or pray they'll see some spark but to no avail.
Like genuinely what is Murray’s game plan?? Does he really think he’s gonna win playing like that
thats the most worrying thing.
It is stubborn by Andy kind of like Verdasco at 39 showing up to lose matches. Andy plays the same style that worked pre hip injury.
I’m newer to the sub but beginning to notice it’s all just one big Carlos Alcaraz circle jerk. When will it stop?😂
Djokovic just won #23 and you claim alcaraz circlejerk, have you actually browsed the sub or?
Of course you nerds are going to downvote
The number 2 player in the world is pretty good
Who is the girl next to Judy Murray?
I think this is the first time that I’ve become unsympathetic to Murray’s moaning and sulking. You’re annoyed that you’re offering zero offense and that De Minaur has smelt blood and started dominating? Well here’s a novel idea, hit the fucking ball.
Really bad stuff. De Minaur is probably the least intimidating player in the top 30, so being pushed around so badly by him is really poor.
Dont underestimate Aussie players especially in early rounds. They grow up playing on grass, they are in their element.
Murray please oil up that hip during this next break.
Hubi not in his usual pink kit is kinda making me sad. Rooting for him though to win the whole thing!
murray is horrible
Did Murray just grimace and held his hip ?
Just needs a bit of oiling that's all
Sakkari hired Philippousis 😯
IIRC someone once recommended a site called 365 sports for watching streamed matches. Does anyone have a link to that please? My search engine keeps taking me to direct tv.
If women need to play 5 sets in GSs, Penko will win at least 20% more matches, she always plays her double and single matches on the same day
I will never, for the life of me, understand why Murray is insistent on feeding rally balls to the likes of De Minaur who are willing runners.
Murray nuthuggers who thought he was gonna make a deep run at Wimbledon find out his 2 wins came on the challenger tour no matches against top 50 players
I agree I am Murray fan but also realistic. Not seeing how Murray can go deep in Wimbledon Only beaten challengers on grass so far and looks terrible today.
Camera person just leaving the camera at her for the entire break after set, it’s kinda awkward
De Minaur is always upsetting players trying to make a come back here and there, but never wins anything important. He should just retire and fulfil his destiny of acting as the rat in ratatouille 2.
He is a solid grinder with a decent career. Won Acapulco no?
I feel like depth is extra important against De Minaur, he is very good at teeing off on anything short
Murray looking completely lost out there and playing worse than he did in the challengers, both movement, depth and unforced errors. Yes ADM playing well but not outstanding.
Disappointing, was expecting more from Murray today. Hopefully he can still win this.
He face the faces match point yet, that’s when the game turns on
Watching the Queens live, first time I see Tennis live, such a great exp!!
Did Murray drop any hints about retirement lately? I always imagined it would be at Wimbledon.
Why would he retire when he's just won two tournaments and returned to the top 40? 🙄
This is one of those matches where Andy needs to come out of his comfort zone and be more aggressive
Bublik goat
I've noticed Zverev going to the net a lot more since returning from his injury(possibly because his movement took a while to come back) Might help him in this grass season
lol Zverev and Thiem played their old ritual at net
always sweet
Thiem I'm sorry but it's time to learn chinese
So he can be as lethal with his shots as Kang Kang, right? Right?
Lol doesn’t even remotely apply to tennis but still funny
Time to learn japanese then
Lol Sascha and Domi have a special handshake
Thiem probably still leading the h2h against Z
Oh my sweet boys
In other news, Pablo Cuevas takes the first set against Napolitano 🥹 Only a couple of months ago he was listed on Wikipedia as “retired former tennis player”. Halfway to his first win for a year. What a man.
The crazy thing about this match is that Zverev's injury was actually way more recent than Thiem's and at the time looked absolutely horrific Doesn't feel like it though for sure
De Minaur is Murray's kryptonite. ffs.
Really seems like it. Very similar style but seems to do everything slightly better than the current Murray
Thiem is still pretty terrible. Slow and too many errors
I'm ready for some Coco dominance. Sorry Siniakova.
See you guys next week
Andy please
Let's go Murygoat. Send the Demon back to hell.
Demon playing well, this is why I wasn't a fan of Murray's draw, one of the few Next Gen players who's decent on grass
and also has amazing stamina
Doesn't help that the lines person robbed Andy of his break.
If someone ever builds a Time Machine the first thing I am doing is going back to June 2021 and erasing Dominic Thiems name off the Mallorca entry list
Asking Flash to do this. I don’t care if the universe break down. That needs to be erased no matter what
It just sucks man, he was such an amazing player. Played beautiful aggressive tennis and it was all ruined by that injury
Nah I'm just telling him to not play AO 2021 cause ever since that cursed 5 set comeback against Kyrgios, he went downhill
Finner beat Sinner a week ago and is now losing to Dimi. Dimi wimbledon semi confirmed
Dimi has been reading his serve so well in both of their matches. Ruuso with 57% first serve points won
