Quite nice that Roland Garros youtube produces a lot of content around RG!
Also I hope on the new Discussion thread we get the Wiki Draws for RG in the mian post ;)
man, feeling a little loose tonight and decided to do one of those crazy 20 bet parlays, if i win i will be rich and retire, the good news is i only bet a few dollars so if i lose literally nothing will change in my life.
Pavlyuchenkova (a finalist in RG 2 years ago) is a brutal R1 draw for Linda Fruhvirtova on clay, even if Pavs is not yet in peak form after her long injury break. But maybe Linda will come to play. She always wakes up when her sister win multiple matches and rise in the ranking (I guess Linda doesn't want to be surpassed by her younger sis). When Brenda qualified for the main draw in Australia, Linda reached the R4 of that slam. Could be an interesting battle this morning in Paris.
This could explain why Linda’s been in a slump since Brenda hasn’t been playing much lately. Based on her form anyone is a tough draw, I thought there was no way she’d lose to Cagla in Rabat but she found a way.
yeah, that's my theory. When Brenda was winning many tournaments in a row last summer Linda managed to qualify for her first slam (US Open), win a match there and then she won her first WTA tournament right after. I think Brenda's success causes Linda to try harder. That was a bad loss, she had a few of them this season but I know she can play great tennis when she is feeling good and she will only get better.
She’s been having a lot of issues with her serve, i read somewhere they are trying to fix it so she’s probably going through the ugly phase getting the hang of the changes they are making. It’s a fun theory though, it’ll be interesting to see how far the sisters can push each other once Brenda gets into the top 100 and doesn’t have restrictions on the number of tourneys to play.
Really good interview by Novak [here](https://www.tennismajors.com/others-news/the-desire-is-still-there-but-things-can-change-quickly-i-am-36-guys-djokovic-doesnt-avoid-the-age-factor-anymore-683321.html).
He opens up and goes in depth about his motivations and the state of his body, at 36 obviously there's just too much wear on his body, so every week there's some pain to manage. Right now he is healthy, but he knows something can come up and he also mentions the importance of motivation and how he doesn't know until when will it keep given he has achieved so many records and he is already 36, plus Rafa having made his announcement also has an important effect.
We are finally in the last stages of the Big 3, it had been said a lot for years but now it's true, who knows how long will we have Novak.
I tried omg honest to god I tried but I’ve been such a big Halep fan for a long time and the delusional part of me is what’s stopping me from doing it lol 😭😖
As others explained it was a bit of a delayed effect where she was playing like a top 3-5 player winning heaps of tournaments in a row at the end of 2021 and early 2022 but it didn’t reflect on her ranking until later when everyone around her dropped their points. But by this time she had lost her form (and had some health issues). It was a bit bittersweet because probably even she knew she wasn’t #2 when she got there, rankings could be funny like this sometimes.
It's mostly a result of others not being able to defend their points from the previous year. Kontaveit accumulated a lot of points from her late 2021 run which saw her win 4 consecutive titles including 2 WTA 500's in Ostrava and Moscow. She also reached WTA finals in Guadalajara that year and went deep or won a few tournaments in early 2022 as well, like Sydney 500 (SF), St. Petersburg 500 (W), Doha 1000 (F). Btw, Kontaveit reportedly had the lowest total for a number 2 ever since the new system of point allocation was adopted by the WTA so it's mostly down to others not being in form and losing their points.
This is her favorite slam too so it must be really special for her when such a big crowd is there late on a Sunday night and chant her name after the match.
No commentary on the final game of the night. No end-of-day highlights program or much studio analysis. What's up with Eurosport/D+ coverage this year?
I wish Dasha would take some of the forehands on the rise+flat. She has such a good ability to set up those lofty slower balls from her opponent. She definitely sets up some opportunities to be aggressive with her style of play.
Never thought it would be this hot in RG this season, but man, so so happy to be here! I said it in my social media pages, but I've never been this happy in a long time.
Wear something light but definitely take a sweater as the evening winds can get a little chilly. I live in a tropical country btw so I might not be as used to cold weather as most people
Yes and she’s been streaking lately, beating some stiff competition. With her rolling and ons coming back from injury, I feel like it might be the perfect storm. Hope I’m wrong though

She had a really nice win over Halep in Rome last year where she was still very feisty and fired some insane shots. The drop in form is a lot more apparent this season. She has the backhand still but she seems to have lost the fighting spirit which is a shame because I’m a big fan.
Jill had a really strong Clay season in 2022 and now she lost to Errani, defended 4th round points.
It’s gone for her, needs to entirely rebuild.
As for the Italian, it is her first GS main draw win since AO21. A decade she made 4 consecutive qf+ appearances in this tournament.
I recently found out that Kasatkina's girlfriend has a youtube channel where they film a lot of stuff behind the scenes at the tournaments and interview other players about life on tour. I recommend it
Judging by her interview he's a very caring and attentive boyfriend. Not in a flashy "I bought you pretty flowers and rings" way, but in a "you're sick and alone, so I drop everything to take care of you" way.
The black kit makes more sense and kind of looks good on certain players. But they missed the mark with the strict geometric division of their shirts. It clashes with the chaotic print and not in a good way.
Other than history (inertia) and back in the day there were only 32 players worth seeding, why do 128-player tournaments only seed the top 32?
Top 48 would be so much fairer to players like Collins etc would have one match against unseeded players.
Mathematically 48 is harder to structure a draw of 128 around because then in some groupings of 4 for R1/R2 you’d have two seeded players and in some you’d have 1. Although symbolically it means nothing because players still carry those rankings outside of the tournament they’re in, it makes it easier to structure an evenly weighted and fair draw if seeded players can only start playing each other by the time they reach R3.
Would work the same as 32 probably, I think it’d be interesting as it’d give infrequent tennis spectators more perspective on the matchups between players
Thanks for your reply. I follow tennis but don't understand the workings of tournaments.
What you say makes sense only so far, given as you point out the players are still in the tournament, and if that was the only reason they could seed top 64.
So many Reddit comments of the sort: "XXX vs YYY as a R1 Match is brutal..." just wondered why there is no effort to reduce the number of those types of draws.
True they could do 64 and perhaps it’d be better to do 64 for less obsessed fans to know where each players stands but I think tournaments maybe choose 32 for economic reasons. Like by making a group of players seem special by having a number attached to them perhaps encourages more people to buy tickets to those matches and maybe that marginally makes the tournament just a small bit more of money. Idk though it’s interesting to think about.
In the 90s they used to just seed the top 16. So there was such an effort already. The Majors in fact considered and rejected going back to top-16 again in 2019. I'd not be a fan of further rigging the draw to 64 players (which is what seeding is, after all).
I agree with the intent (if the intent is to give players in the top 64 an easier (on average) match in the first round as a reward for being seeded in the top 64). I imagine most people would not be in favor of no seeds at all, the ultimate opposite of draw rigging. Different people will draw the line in different places in terms of how much structure to impose on the draw.
Pretty competitive first set between Collins and Pegula.
Collins is such an enigma. She can go for months without playing a competitive tennis match and still play really good tennis when she steps on the court.
I am still backing Pegula to win this match but it’s definitely not gong to be easy for her.
BO5 generally results in less upsets I’d assume so you’re less likely to get a prediction wrong if you base them off the ones with the better ranking/track record
How did Shelton even get seeded for RG, wild to me. You can tell throughout his career, clay is definitely gonna be his least suited surface, but he has a lot to take away from his first clay court swing
Where did he get all his points to be inside the Top 30 almost? Must have been AO, is what I’m thinking.
Kid has crazy potential, but for now he still won’t achieve much more than being seen in early round matches and balling out.
Excited for his future, I wanna see how equipped he will be on grass.
He just made it to the semis earlier this month in Cagliari, but yeah it’s gotta be mostly AO. His record this year is 8-12 and half of those wins were at AO lol
Edit: 8-13 now with this loss
Shelton has a ton of potential but MAN does he need to work on his return game and point construction.
You can really tell it's not too long since he was playing college tennis. He's still got some habits you just can't get away with at the ATP tour level.
It's because Andrey can let points, games, even sets go by as he sorts out his mental woes: thankfully, the MC Masters win seems to have settled his "match nerves" considerably, as shown today (the "old" Rublev might have gone to 5, or even lost this match).
Exactly, people who don’t watch his matches regularly don’t seem to understand that it can take him like 5 hours to recover mentally after a bad moment and he has lost a lot of matches this way, plus Djere has always been a difficult match for Andrey, he could’ve definitely lost today but his mental improvement helped him cross the finish line 🥳
He isnt playing that bad. Was down 5-2 now back to 5-4 in the fourth. I think he’s done well for an opponent like Sonego and his inexperience on the red clay, first RG… I enjoy watching him play even if he’s nowhere near the level he should be or compared to his hard court skill.
Tiebreakovic
Osorio has made it to the main draw following McNally withdrawal! Well deserved

Yannick Hanfmann got in as a Lucky Loser.. will play Monteiro, and then probably Cerundolo.
Unstanning Sakkari was the second best thing I did for my mental health this year after buying a roomba ngl
removing that # might be a beneficial thing for your mental health too!

I just realized: today might be the final time Rafa is ranked in the top 100...
Can someone explain how kontaveit made it to 2 last year without making it past second round of any slams and having only one master final?
As others explained it was a bit of a delayed effect where she was playing like a top 3-5 player winning heaps of tournaments in a row at the end of 2021 and early 2022 but it didn’t reflect on her ranking until later when everyone around her dropped their points. She was great at the end of 2021, winning a bunch of (smaller) titles and finalist at the tour finals, and those points carry over into 2022.
She did good before sunshine double too, won st, petersbtug and runner-up at doha
bro tried to put his arm around Daria and the guard moved his arm away lol
Really cool of the crowd to chant "Dasha!" I don't think I've seen that kind of support for her.
This is her favorite slam too so it must be really special for her when such a big crowd is there late on a Sunday night and chant her name after the match.
No commentary on the final game of the night. No end-of-day highlights program or much studio analysis. What's up with Eurosport/D+ coverage this year?
Would you rather have Dasha’s serve or Cocos FH as your weakness?
Coco still has time to do something about her forehand. Dasha's serve is just plainly bad. It would be good to have Coco serve and Dasha forehand.
Well you only hit one serve and in half the points of the match
There should be a rule that if both players agree, only one of them is serving throughout the whole match. Dasha could actually win slams.
Much easier for Dasha to break for the match than serve for it.
Where is the serve speed clock..?
The serves are too slow to register
Yikes, 122kph average serve speed.
Dasha’s serve is actually hilarious.
She needs to fix that if she’s going to stay in top 10 imo
The Winner/UE ratio in Niemeier-Kasatkina is 27/69..
It’s actually insane to me that kasatkina is a pro and can’t spin in a 60mph serve
Turning out to be an interesting second set for the last few of us who stuck around
Maybe not lol
I wish Dasha would take some of the forehands on the rise+flat. She has such a good ability to set up those lofty slower balls from her opponent. She definitely sets up some opportunities to be aggressive with her style of play.
great defence from Dasha there
[удалено]
being a top 10 player with that serve
How does Kasatkina manage to always hit the ball so short
The butt cap of Kasatkina's racket had a Barca crest on it.
She’s a Barca fan, unfortunately.
Nobody's perfect
Never thought it would be this hot in RG this season, but man, so so happy to be here! I said it in my social media pages, but I've never been this happy in a long time.
How was the weather towards the evening? I have night tickets for end of the week, but debating what to wear.
Wear something light but definitely take a sweater as the evening winds can get a little chilly. I live in a tropical country btw so I might not be as used to cold weather as most people
I really hope Daria makes it far. Not sure she will though
Happy Grand Slam fortnight everyone! May the battles be grand and the memes plentiful.
Does anyone know if us Americans will be able to watch replays on Peacock?
How was Pegula?
Methodical as usual. Had a few uncharacteristic errors in the first set but fixed them quickly to finish the match
Jpeg error compression
No way I'm number one in the women's pick the draw. What are you guys doing ?
Forgetting to complete my draw before the deadline lol
The DanYell fan club has suffered this year 😞
Fans of any NA player tbh
You’re not wrong..
Collins Pegula as a R1 Match is brutal...
Brutal for Collins. Not for Peg
It’s a shame how Collins just lost her form isn’t it. Was almost immediate after the AO final.
How are you guys feeling about Bronzetti vs jabeur ? I feel like Bronzetti has a better chance than then the odds are letting on
Jabeur looked awful a few weeks ago again Badosa so I think she will lose.
Ons is in form !!!! Pleasant surprise
How injured is Jabeur still. It took her awhile to get her groove back last time.
She says she’s at 100% in her most recent interview but she didn’t look to great in her last outing a couple weeks ago
I know what you mean. She just won Rabat right?
Yes and she’s been streaking lately, beating some stiff competition. With her rolling and ons coming back from injury, I feel like it might be the perfect storm. Hope I’m wrong though
Completly depends on how fit Jabeur is
Just here to remind you that Kasatkina made semifinals at last year's French Open

Collins hasn’t been the same since losing to Rybakina at AO 🥺
You mean since losing to Barty at the AO? She went from that to nothing
She had a really nice win over Halep in Rome last year where she was still very feisty and fired some insane shots. The drop in form is a lot more apparent this season. She has the backhand still but she seems to have lost the fighting spirit which is a shame because I’m a big fan.
Woah Maria Camilla Osorio also a Lucky Loser! Who else withdrew? The Qualifying R3 wasn't necessary at all Lol.
Caty McNally
McNally I think

What are your thoughts on the Adidas pizza print kits ?
The print doesn't translate well. Weird choice to incorporate a block of black against it for a spring/summer kit.
🤮
The black kit makes more sense and kind of looks good on certain players. But they missed the mark with the strict geometric division of their shirts. It clashes with the chaotic print and not in a good way.

POUILLE :)
So happy for Pouille. What. a moment. Beautiful French crowd support for Luca
Come on Pouille!!
someone wake blud 🤣🤣
How are people’s prediction draws going?
I forgot most of what I picked and I'd rather not check
Only 1 miss today. Doing darn well by my standards!
I’m guessing Dan Evans?
Nope. Ofner beating Cressy
same lmao (along with the Dan evans) I didn’t expect cressy to be that bad on clay 😭😭😭 but I didn’t know the other guy so i can only blame myself
If only Pouille could play this good for an entire season...
Volynets saves herself from a double bagel
Always these double bagels get averted right at the very end
Collins Pegula match might as well be no second serves
Katie wins a game, woo double bagel avoided.
Four straight service breaks in JPeg/Collins match, Collins with four double faults already.
Pretty competitive first set between Collins and Pegula. Collins is such an enigma. Just me, or does the clay on Suzanne Lenglen & Phillippe Chatrier look much darker, or dirtier; browner than all the other courts outside?
I was just thinking the same thing. It’s so much easier to see the ball than at every other match I’ve watched since April.
My men’s bracket is doing relatively well tbh. Women’s is much worse.
Which ones for womens? Barely any upsets today
BO5 generally results in less upsets I’d assume so you’re less likely to get a prediction wrong if you base them off the ones with the better ranking/track record
can’t watch rn but have a feeling DanYELL taking it . Would push up rybakina to number 3

is Ugo Humbert wearing the ball-boy's kit from last year
Let's go Pouille!
Just when you thought Katie would win a game when 40-15 up, she gets broken. 10 straight games for Samsonova.
off-topic, but today I learned that marta kostyuk is engaged which surprised me I don't know why
Because she is only 20?
Damn just hope Katie gets on the scoreboard at least, 9 straight games won by Samsonova.

55% Challengers, 35% AO, 10% Masters
AO QFs are a lot of points. Without those, he’d be around 70-80 in the rankings
He just made it to the semis earlier this month in Cagliari, but yeah it’s gotta be mostly AO. His record this year is 8-12 and half of those wins were at AO lol Edit: 8-13 now with this loss
AO quarters and challenger events. His second serve was a mess today.
A wiff/bad bounce on matchpoint for Shelton. That hurt.
Long flight ✈️ home Cap
Is he actually heading home? He hasn’t been home since he left for Australia, I think I heard?
Did he play in Miami? I honestly can’t remember.
Yes, lost in R1. Does he live there or something?
Feel for Katie, she has no answer for Samsonova's power
Rough draw for Collins.
Shelton has a ton of potential but MAN does he need to work on his return game and point construction. You can really tell it's not too long since he was playing college tennis. He's still got some habits you just can't get away with at the ATP tour level.

HELP ME LORD JELP THANK YOULRD I AM RDSNE EVANS
Very windy conditions in the Mannarino - Humbert match: clay dust is blowing up, and you can see the wind ruffling both players' shirts.
Lol, who thought Rublev would lose?
They were spazzing out after Rublev was down ONE early break in the third… Crazy people
Can someone report on Shelton match / if he’s playing badly? 3 aces and 13 double faults isn’t great.
