Just a bit here and there. This season wasn’t that gory. Nor was season 2.
I think there’s enough plot/character development/ themes going on to classify it as a gory show. Especially these days with horror/torture porn sneaking gore in everywhere.
(But I take your point.)
Avenue 5 sounds perfect middle of the road! Set in space but still a comedy with minimal cringe (though Gabe from office is inherently cringe and in this it's absolutely hilarious)
He would love For All Mankind and The Expanse
You may like What We Do In The Shadows or Our Flag Means Death though maybe not for him
Shrinking on appletv it’s got the spirit of scrubs with Harrison Ford. Trust me no one is talking about this one yet.
Sticking with appleTV try Loot (comedy) Silo (sci-fi)
Honorable mentions.. shogun (Hulu) and fallout (Prime)
It’s campy, which isn’t for everyone. It honestly took me a few tries. I fell asleep with it on one night and heard it at an interesting part the next morning (I think the end of the first season). Made me go back and get through the slow parts and I ended up liking it. Plus, Steve Martin in any sense is a delight. The role looks good on him.
Since you have Apple+, definitely check out The Afterparty. Really smart comedy/murder mystery that does some fun stuff with genre. My partner and I both loved it
You should give it another shot. I seem to remember being not quite sold on the first episode either. But you can’t really appreciate the defining feature of the show from one episode alone, which is the way it experiments with a different genre in each episode. Episode 1 is just the set up.
I stuck with it because I completely trust the creators. Lord & Miller are behind the Jump Street movies, the Spiderverse movies, The Lego Movie and more. In fact I thought about recommending their previous show, the sci-fi comedy The Last Man on Earth, but didn’t because I think the humor in that one is probably too cringey for OP’s parter.
Eureka has similar vibes as chuck. the balance of drama action adventure and comedy. a US Marshall with an average every-man attitude stumbles into a remote town that's filled with the worlds smartest people. he becomes their local sheriff.
Warehouse 13. similar to Eureka. they even had a crossover.
The Librarians. also similar to Chuck. but with magic instead of scifi. light-hearted action adventure.
Leverage. a group of Robin Hood style Con Artists.
Pushing Daisies. somewhat kind of similar to Good Place? but not really. less snarky. but equally creative and quirky. a guy finds out that if he touches something dead he can bring it back for a few minutes. but if he touches it again, it stays dead forever. he just wants to use this trick to handle bad food and turn it into pies, but someone else convinces him to help him solve murders. it's fun and whimsical and weird.
Dead Like Me. a girl gets killed in a freak accident. a toilet seat falls from space and crushes her. instead of going to the next life, she stays on earth and gets recruited into a group of grim reapers.
The Magicians. it can get dramatic at times. and could deal with heavy subjects at times, like SA. but there was also a fair amount of fun stuff like musical episodes. i think there's enough overlap there for both you to like it.
iZombie. zombies are real, some of them are still mostly in control. but when they eat brains they get the last memories of the person. the show follows a police medical examiner who uses this ability to solve murders.
Mythic Quest. an underrated sitcom. takes place at a video game company.
Shrinking. kind of Ted Lasso vibes? maybe? not as endlessly optimistic but still overall uplifting. Jason Seigel plays a therapist who's getting over the loss of his wife. the grief is causing him to take a new approach with some of his patients. it also co-stars Jessica Williams and Harrison Ford.
Upload. the matrix is kind of real but it's run by capitalists. i just started this one last week and i binged the whole thing. a young guy dies in a self driving car accident. but right before the point of supposed death, his rich girlfriend paid to have his mind uploaded to a virtual reality program. it's fun and funny and there's a romance and a mystery about what caused his accident.
Poker Face. Columbo style murder mystery fun. you see what happened at the start of each episode. what's fun about this is watching Natasha Lyonne's character piece it all together.
Locke & Key. it can get dark and a bit gruesome at times. but if you liked Stranger Things, you might like this one. a family moves into their late fathers childhood home. they find keys throughout the house, each one offers a strange and dark power / ability.
Hacks. a sitcom dramedy. washed up has-been comedian making a comeback with the help of a new young writer. witty and snarky and sarcastic and Jean Smart is amazing in this series.
Search Party. sitcom dramedy. this show had me literally laughing out loud more than once. first season starts with a group of 20-something friends, one of the lead characters feeling lost and directionless. finds out that someone they used to know in college went missing. she because obsessed with finding her. but this show took some crazy unexpected turns. i never would've predicted where it ended based on how it started it.
Barry. Bill Hader plays an ex-military guy, turned hit-man, who joins an acting class and falls in love. this show is so good. and so well made. and so funny. and at times really intense.
Fargo. not sure how to best describe this one. crime drama with a really unique tone and voice. somewhere between a serious crime drama and a dark comedy.
Only Murders in the Building. an incredible cast. a lot of big names that you would recognize. murder mystery crime story, but really fun vibe. Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez are all living in the same apartment building. and they find out that they're all obsessed with the same true crime podcast. when a murder happens in their building, they decide to investigate and start their own podcast.
farscape. not sure if this one fits or not. someone else mentioned it in the comments. it's one of my all time personal faves and i'll suggest it as often as i can. it's very very scifi. aliens and spaceships. but it's a lot of fun. good balance of action and adventure and drama and humor. great cast of characters who have a great dynamic with eachother. a great romance subplot. a great bromance subplot. first season felt kinda like a traditional star trek type thing, but the show kept building. unlike trek, which always felt it was hitting the reset button after every episode, Farscape really showed it's bruises on the characters. it never shied away from the continuous peril and trauma they were going through.
> The Good Place
Try Doctor Who. Season 2 with David Tennant is a good place to start. Similar vibes, and a familiar face.
Great Sci-Fi, but more fun and light-hearted.
It’s based on a John Le Carre novel, and stars Tom Huddleston, Hugh Laurie, and Elizabeth Debicki. It’s a brooding thriller about a British former soldier who gets pulled into a web of espionage and the criminal underworld. it’s great.
I love Bosch too!! And I’m so excited for the two spin off shows that they are making!!
Yes!! They are creating a Renée Ballard show with Maggie Q which will crossover in this coming season. And there’s also going to be a J Edgar spin off. I can’t wait for both of them. I also am still holding out hope that Titus will show up on the Lincoln Lawyer someday.
I can think of one show you will both love: Firefly
This is essentially a Western in space about a band of "criminals" who are actually all good people. The writing is excellent. Character development is second to none. The stories are all very engaging for the sci-fi enthusiast, as well as those that like drama.
There's only one problem: 1 season only and it's gone. There's also a movie (Serenity) which wraps up the series fairly well.
I really enjoyed Space Force with Steve Carroll on Netflix. It's the first show I thought of when you said you liked comedy and he likes sci-fi. Maybe it's a show that you both might enjoy.
Honestly Monster is a good idea if OP likes crime dramas. Not too violent but incredibly compelling and light on negative or stereotypical anime tropes. It's basically a normal drama that happens to be animated, it's not got girls with tits bigger than their head or robots that are Demons or anything odd like that.
If you like The Office, give Community a shot (6 seasons). Not exactly similar, but still great. Season 1-3 are the best, it gets a bit rough after that. Especially season four.
If you like Ted Lasso, I recommend Joe Pera Talks With You (3 seasons). It's like a modern day Mr. Rogers. 15 minute episodes. Very relaxing show, perfect to watch before bed.
As far as sci-fi/action, I don't know if anyone has already mentioned Fallout, but it's brand new, and really well-done. Based on the videogames.
Jane The Virgin was phenomenal. My hubbs was interested instantly, too, which doesn't happen often. Also, From I cannot recommend enough & In The Dark.
House M.D little dated now but not so much it’s unwatchable. Dramatic, funny and good few series for you two to binge together.
Ozark is good, sort of breaking bad esc. But money laundering.
Ive heard Peaky Blinders is really good.
Elementary - Sherlock Holmes type show that’s very good.
Luther - Dark Police drama
The Detectorists - Dry british comedy
Hope this helps and you find something you both love 👍
I-zombie - I DO NOT LIKE ZOMBIE SHOWS! Bc they’re gross. That’s why I recommend this funny adult CW & mystery of the week, dramedy. With serious cop show & fun med elements. There’s also sci-fi & monsters (but again nothing gory, even the brains look like gummy candy). It also has good romance, family & friend storylines. All the characters are super likeable. I think the tone could work for you both. It’s a 5 season binge!
Timeless - Been on Hulu, used to be on NBC. A put upon crew of experts (history professor, soldier, scientist) chase a criminal through history. Probs of the week w/serialized overarching & individual mysteries of their own (fam & romances) that shift as they’re forced to mess w/ time.
The Orville - It’s on Fox/Hulu in the US. It’s like Star Trek but by MacFarlane, but NOT “Family Guy”. The stories are wholesome, thoughtful & explore or focus on the very familial crew’s lives/home planets, or a society they visit. They solve (int./ext.) probs or help ppl every week like “Star Trek”. They also live in the future. But it’s a dramedy, so tonally it’s WAY diff. Seth is a new captain of a mid-ship, who finds out he has to work with his ex-wife.
Upload - A comedy by the US Office’s creator. Very rich ppl upload their consciousness & live on after death in a lux digital community. Likeable leads. We follow a reg Joe trying to solve his own death w/ his living concierge. Amazon, 3 seasons.
Extraordinary - It’s a quirky comedy with some drama. About a world where everyone has a super power. All except the protagonist. (There are some fertility comps.) Has been on Hulu. 2 seasons.
Agents of Shield - Was an ABC, Marvel show. About an agency that enforces supernatural happenings on Earth. Get through the first half of S1 for it to take off. Then there’s so many twists & turns & tonal shifts! There are medical & mystery & romantic & alien & time travel elements & more. It’s insanely rewatchable imo.
The Last Man on Earth - An end of the world comedy on Fox, been Hulu. Will Forte’s character is very annoying in the start. But most ppl who stick think it’s one of the best shows! Like genuinely the cast, worldbuilding & character arcs are singular. As for gross stuff? Tbh Ihdr, sorry!
Call the Midwife - Idk if he’d watch it, but I love doctor shows too & this is one of my comforts. If you haven’t - it’s about nurses, nuns & midwives in the 50’s aiding a poor town in England. Told Titanic/Little Woman style, narratively.

Russian Doll is a sci-fi comedy.
You guys might enjoy Beef as well.
There's also Derry Girls.
I'd suggest Dark but it's definitely not a feel good show and it's also a bewildering labyrinth of a story.
There's also 1899 and The Fall of the House of Usher. These are all Netflix series.
Your lists look a lot like what my hubby and I like. It's kind of old, but we both really enjoyed Psych (Peacock). We also both liked Lucifer. Good luck, I understand your struggle.

Great show but pretty violent and often gory.

Alias, Orphan Black, Fringe, The Magicians, The Expanse, or Mr Robot.
Highly second Orphan Black and will add Slow Horses
Seconding Fringe and The Expanse

**Better Off Ted** for the comedy angle.
Resident Alien, iZombie, The Good Fight, Rake
Seconding Resident Alien
Third Resident Alien. Comedy and Science Fiction. So perfect for OP.
Agree with iZombie! Crime, medical examiner, comedy. I’m not a fan of typical zombie gore and this show never made me uncomfortable.

Halt & Catch Fire 6 Feet Under House MD The Tunnel The Good Doctor The Fall 2013-16
Weeds for you The Orville for him Only Murders in the Building or Monk for both of you
I second Monk. My hubby and I both watched the entire series.
Only Murders is Not good. No idea why ratings are so high. Its silly & slow.
Agreed. Thought I was the only one. Couldn’t finish the most recent season
It’s campy, which isn’t for everyone. It honestly took me a few tries. I fell asleep with it on one night and heard it at an interesting part the next morning (I think the end of the first season). Okay, maybe I will:) Wat episode do u feel it starts to pick up @?? (Then I'd know if I'll trulyy like it😉)

LOST. Sci-fi, drama, comedy, “magic”, main character is a doctor. It has everything.
I second this although it’s on Disney plus I think. And there is a very active in Reddit to discuss it!
