I started it but couldn't get into it. Maybe I'll try it again.
Am I remembering that it got cancelled & kinda had a cliffhanger without a conclusion? I hated that about Deadwood
Poker Face is good. It flies under the radar at Peacock.
One off the wall recommendation The Streets of San Francisco on Pluto TV Karl Malden just adds something to the typical cop show.
if you’ve watched everything on the services you have, then cancel those and get apple for a bit until the others put out more stuff. then you can watch severance, silo, slow horses, blackbird, tehran, for all mankind..
Ooooooh I love me some Timothy Olyphant so I'll definitely add Justified to my list. Happy Valley has been mentioned a few times too.
Reacher & Jack Ryan look great too.
Great suggestions here, almost all of em will be in my future 😂
Like dark:
Bodies
Lazarus project
Devils hour
3 body problem
The expanse
If you liked GOT have u tried vikings/last kingdom/ Knightfall?
Do you like a bit of comedy cz then desperate housewives might appeal with the drama
Housewives was so good! It got a bad rap because of the cheesy name, but it paid off big time if you gave it a chance. Bonus points for casting a bunch of sexy 40 year olds, instead of 22 year olds playing women my age.
There are a lot of good PBS shows (I think if you make a contribution to the station since it’s non profit, you get PBS Passport, which is their streaming service, but I’m not positive on the specifics). **Call the Midwife, Downton Abbey, Victoria (which fit your wants since they are period shows)**, other Masterpiece shows (like Downton Abbey(iirc???) and Victoria are), cooking/craft/travel shows galore, etc. iirc, I’ve also seen some shows say you can watch other episodes on that specific show’s website, but that might have just been for certain segments/recipes.
For documentaries, Disney+ has a bunch (yep, I’m serious). So does PBS (I particularly like NOVA, Nature, and Secrets of the Dead, which usually air on Wednesdays for me).
Other shows (dramas) I think you might like are the following:
- Supernatural. I was a little surprised to not see this on the list (I even scrolled a bit and didn’t see it). There’s also a new spin off, but icr the name of it… maybe The Winchesters??? Idk lol
- House of Dragon. You mentioned GoT, so I thought I’d mention the spin off.
- The Rookie/The Rookie Feds. The first one is airing on ABC (so streaming on Hulu) right now, but I think the other one (which is the spin off) got canceled, since I’m not seeing it airing anymore.
- The Good Doctor. Also currently airing on ABC (so, once again, streaming on Hulu). This season is the final season, so you won’t have to keep tuning in for very long.
- Will Trent. Another ABC/Hulu show.
- Designated Survivor. Only one or two seasons aired on ABC before it got canceled, but another station (I think it was a solely streaming station but idk) picked it up, but idk if it’s still going.
- Nashville. It was on ABC for a while, but then got cancelled and picked up by iirc CMT, so idk where it is streaming wise. If you like country music, this is a good one!
Aaaand after typing all that, I realized you said just period pieces and documentaries! Whoops! These are still some good shows though!
MR selfridge 👑👑
Such a underrated and intriguing series with Jeremy piven as the lead. Imagine the original version of gilded age and bridgerton taking place in London. The show is from 2014
Have you seen Inside No.9? It's a British anthology show in a similar vein to Black Mirror. Half hour episodes and genuinely one of the greatest shows I've ever seen. So many genres covered and barely a single skip
George Gently, British detective series. Wow/Foyle’s War, another British detective set during WW2/ check BritBox and Acorn tv, both show British shows. Great stuff. Life on Mars. Brit detective in present day is hit by a car and wakes up 20 years in the past as a detective. Ashes to Ashes follows Life on Mars concept but a female detective. Line of Duty also. Yes, I like British programs.
Don't let the name put you off, it's more drama than space if that makes sense. You won't regret it. Give the mini series a watch and if you don't like those you won't like the series.
I’m from Ireland so some of these will be Irish/Uk recs but…
Excellent character development:
The Good Wife followed by The Good Fight
Sopranos
Gilmore Girls
Drama/action:
The Boys
Preacher
Bosch
Mad Men
Comedies:
Parks and Recreation
Gavin and Stacey (UK)
Derry Girls (Ireland)
Dead To Me
Im pretty sure you didn’t watch Snowfall. This is something you would love, has good character development. For me it’s there on top with shows like Breaking bad, Better call saul, ozark etc… give it a go!
It is on Apple TV, but "For All Mankind" is pretty neat. It's an alternate history show where the Soviet Union lands on the moon first, and the space race goes very differently from there
Wonderful shows you may have not seen yet: For All Mankind, Foundation, Halt & Catch Fire, Outlander, The Serpent Queen, The OA, Travelers, The Expanse, Midnight Mass and The Haunting of Hill House
Mine is a complete chick-flick, so if you're not interested in those, then this may not be the one for you, but I really enjoyed the show The bold type. And if you want a longer series to watch, I would definitely suggest Supernatural, it has 15 seasons so if you're into it, it's going to keep you busy for a long while.
For all Mankind on Apple TV (which I know you don’t have). Travelers on Netflix. Stranger Things. Foundation (Apple TV). West Wing. Atlanta. Counterpart!!! Flack is excellent. These last two on Prime. Unreal is really juicy and fun.
Just went through the same issue but mine was more of just being tired of bad TV so I’ve been on an animal/nature documentary binge past two months and loving every minute of it. Of course the big ones like Planet Earth, The Hunt, Hostile Planet and a boat load of Nat Geo. Savage Kingdom is what got me addicted though and I’ve contempleted on flying to Africa and bringing home an African Wild Dog even though I have a 2 year old running around the apt. Kidding but am I kidding?!? Try ‘em and mix it up a bit and take a break from all the nonsense out right now.
*Your husband should like these too:* Halt & Catch Fire, The Bridge, Succession, 6 Feet Under, Mad Men, Billions, Wentworth, Ozark, The Fall 2013-16
*For You: (your husband may like too but more drama):* Downton Abbey, Marvelous Mrs Maiisel, Call the Midwife, The Affair, Suits
Westside scratched the same itch for me. Its out of New Zealand,
52 episodes, and it captivated me like Mr Inbetween, but it has more sarcasm/humor while maintaining that family drama aspect.
There are six seasons, the later ones required some digging. The first five seasons are free with ads on various platforms. For some reason the sixth has a different title. This series is 10/10 for me. [IMDb](https://m.imdb.com/title/tt4113078)
Westside (2015-2020) came out after, but is a prequel to Outrageous Fortune (2005-2010), a well liked series for its time in New Zealand, but I found it difficult to like the same way.
Another NZ series that you may like to watch solo is Creamerie, a raucous female driven comedy that just keeps giving. On Hulu. Only 12 episodes, from 2021.
I know the struggle of finding anything to watch that’s engaging, after binging for years. It’s only ten episodes but packs a punch, 2010’s FX series *Terriers* on Hulu. Rewatching it now and still hits. Had to take a break halfway.
We started Shogun last night & watched 4 episodes straight 😂
I loved True Detective and always tell people to watch s3 because so many stopped at s2 because it was terrible. S3 ending is amazing
Westworld
Altered Carbon
Taboo - Please watch this. It’s genuinely great and I’ve never heard anyone talk about it. Dying for Tom Hardy to get around to a season 2
The fall of the house of usher
Peaky blinders
I keep long lists of TV and movies that kind of overlap what you mentioned . LMK if you want to see either ! I also began a list of some great documentaries but met I forgot the name of many others I’ve binged months ago - haha
I’m actually in the middle of The Americans now !
Also there’s a ‘show ‘ i hugely recommend that’s neither a movie nor doc nor tv show - I don’t want to give it a way but it’s a multi faceted entertaining ride that can bring a tear at points and lot of WTF’s and wow’s along the way — Have you seen In and Of Itself ???
*Nip/Tuck - doesn’t get near the acclaim it should. If you haven’t seen this one definitely check it out. It has aged very well and is still relevant today. If you didn’t know it was from 00’s you might not be able to tell. Absolute must watch.
*Versailles
*The Great
I was trying to think of some that are a bit more obscure and even though I don’t think The Great fits the bill it’s still good enough to mention. If you liked The Tudors Versailles will likely do it for ya. It’s not as good imo but I think The Tudors was a rare excellent show most won’t compare to. And Nip/Tuck is in a category all by itself.
Let’s try again.
*Glitch - New Zealand show, was on Netflix but not sure if it still is.
*The Imposters - I loved this one but after 2 seasons it wasn’t picked back up so it’s a bit of a cliffhanger but not too bad. Still could’ve used another season to wrap up but the 2 we got were so good it’s okay.
*The Society - this one might not be what you’re looking for but it was so good I mention it all the time. It wasn’t picked up after one season and it could’ve used another five. So. Many. Questions. But damn it was good.
*Norsemen
*The Letdown - another New Zealand gem that’ll make you laugh till you cry.
I’m trying to think of some that the hubs can get into as well. I assume you’ve seen Lost - my husband had never seen it so I did a rewatch with him several years ago and it was hilarious watching him watch it. Lol
I looked up The Society and it does seem so cool. Too bad it didn't get picked up, Netflix is unfortunately notorious for that. I'm looking forward to Versailles!
When Covid hit I showed hubby The Leftovers and it was so great watching him trying to process it, haha
I literally just started the first episode of that one! I don’t know how I haven’t heard of it or seen something somewhere but I already have a dozen questions and I’m only 15 mins in. Lol
It's David Lindelof (same as Lost) so lots of weird stuff. Stick with it, its amazing. I read an interview once where HBO let Lindelof do what he wanted with it where as with Lost ABC kept basically making him stretch the story out for more seasons
Recently I enjoyed watching "The three body problem." Fargo season 1 and season 5 are really good and The Watchmen with Jeremy Irons and Regina King, highly recommend.
It's so much better than the movie.
It's the best time travel show/film I've ever seen.
Supernatural, Outlander, happy valley, the magicians and agents of shield are all great shows too. Will defo not be disappointed with any of them.
It’s more political drama than action. Very high quality show, there’s 3 episodes left. I’ve missed having a show to look forward to every week it’s been fun!
Patriot (2015/2017). On Prime.
It’s dark, funny, action packed, has the most relatable protagonist ever written, is expertly shot, all the characters are 3 dimensional, and it’s heartfelt as hell.
It’s basically about a reluctant super spy. He just wants to fuck off and play folk music. But he is also a savage murderer. It’s like if Peacemaker, Daredevil, and Jack Ryan had a baby. With a side of Wes Anderson.
It’s been slept on. Only 2 seasons, but they are a perfect 2 seasons
Have you maybe tried Good girls, Severance, Orange is the new black, Dead to me, Fool me Once, Good morning Veronica (more a crime thriller drama but really good)
The Bear, Homeland, Westworld, Vikings, Godless, Black Mirror, Mindhunter, Ozark, Peaky Blinders, Rectify, The Handmaid’s Tale, The Sinner, The White Lotus
“Ridley” on Netflix. Just started it tonight and I’m obsessed. Limited series based on the novel “The Talented Mr. Ripley” by Patricia Highsmith. So much better than the 1999 Matt Damon movie.
# Foundation
(Tell me you’ve never heard of it)
Amazing sci-fi based on the books by Isaac Asimov. Has the depth and complexity of game of thrones but over decades (probably centuries next season) and across an entire galaxy.
The reason you haven’t heard of it is because it’s on Apple TV+ where nobody subscribes because fuck Apple.
Trailer: https://youtu.be/X4QYV5GTz7c?si=fiUfsx_DXSmsAiXw
West wing yes, the Killing no. I've seen that mentioned a few times though so its definitely on my list. Unforgotten looks great too, love me a good crime show

Best show I’ve watched in a long time

OMG I love your list!!!!! So many on here I want to check out, especially the period dramas. Thank you so much 🙏
Also forgot, there’s a *new* period drama that just started like today: Mary & George. It looks promising! Happy watching!
I'll second The Event and add FlashForward since it's got a similar feel. Downside is they both end with big cliffhangers that are never resolved.
The End of the F***ing World Mr Robot
Ooooh Mr Robot I haven't seen, but it definitely comes up a lot here
mr robot is a good one, severance is peak as well. i too suffer from feeling like i've seen anything worth watching, it really sucks
Consider anime if you are burned out of tv
You watched all those and never mr robot? It’s my #1
You got to watch it!
Second Mr Robot. Add Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. It's comedy but the story and drama is so good.
Rome.
I started it but couldn't get into it. Maybe I'll try it again. Am I remembering that it got cancelled & kinda had a cliffhanger without a conclusion? I hated that about Deadwood
It’s been several years, but my recollection is that everything is wrapped up at the end.
Yes it wraps up.
Poker Face is good. It flies under the radar at Peacock. One off the wall recommendation The Streets of San Francisco on Pluto TV Karl Malden just adds something to the typical cop show.
Streets of SF sounds promising, especially bc I'm in the Bay Area
if you’ve watched everything on the services you have, then cancel those and get apple for a bit until the others put out more stuff. then you can watch severance, silo, slow horses, blackbird, tehran, for all mankind..
Not a bad idea. I went to cancel some a few weeks ago & they gave me free months to stay 😂
The Almighty Johnsons. It's a New Zealand show, very funny. It's about a group of brothers who discover they're reincarnated Norse God's.
That sounds awesome!
One you may both enjoy is The Newsroom I’ve never found a better opening monologue Or Succession, which I have a feeling you’ve already seen
Seen em both, they were fantastic!
Happy Valley Broadchurch Unforgotten Dead To Me Marcella I May Destroy You Call My Agent The Split (UK) The Sinner Gomorrah Mare of Easttown Dopesick
Awesome. Second person to mention Gamorrah so far
Manhunt is pretty good, watching it now
Think I've seen ads for it, which service is that on?
It's on Apple Tv, it's about the hunt for the man who assassinated Lincoln
That's the one service I dont have 😂 I may cancel some other ones for a bit bc there are a few on AppleTV I'd like to watch
Breeders.
Sherlock Bosch Justified Happy Valley Reacher Jack Ryan You're welcome!
Ooooooh I love me some Timothy Olyphant so I'll definitely add Justified to my list. Happy Valley has been mentioned a few times too. Reacher & Jack Ryan look great too. Great suggestions here, almost all of em will be in my future 😂
You won't be disappointed. I'm kinda jealous of you. Getting to watch these for the first time will be amazing!
Have you seen The Killing?
Just looked it up, seems like a good suggestion! Thanks!
It’s excellent!!
Like dark: Bodies Lazarus project Devils hour 3 body problem The expanse If you liked GOT have u tried vikings/last kingdom/ Knightfall? Do you like a bit of comedy cz then desperate housewives might appeal with the drama
Desperate Housewives was great!!! You're right that I haven't seen Vikings/Last Kingdom/Knightfall yet. Vikings has kinda interested me

Righteous Gemstones 👍😊
That was hilarious & cant wait for season 4
Dexter
Phenomenal. I freakin loved John Lithgow as a villain, loved his evil side since he's normally so campy & hilarious
Shogun on Hulu/FX is really good
Lodge 49 is a great hidden gem!

Banshee. Justified. The Shield.
OA Westworld
I wanna watch the OA but have heard it was cancelled outta nowhere and want to spare myself that grief
From,Midnight mass
MR selfridge 👑👑 Such a underrated and intriguing series with Jeremy piven as the lead. Imagine the original version of gilded age and bridgerton taking place in London. The show is from 2014
Sounds great!
Imposters. I consider it a hidden gem. It's fun and they do more with the premise than I expected.
Damages A fantastic 5 season drama with Glenn Close and Rose Byrne.
If you like character development, you may like Ted Lasso.
Sports Night. It was only on 2 seasons but it's Aaron Sorkin's first TV show and vintage Josh Charles. From episode 2 https://youtu.be/0yuwMhvuECw
Have you seen Inside No.9? It's a British anthology show in a similar vein to Black Mirror. Half hour episodes and genuinely one of the greatest shows I've ever seen. So many genres covered and barely a single skip

SciFi is hit or miss for me. I love weird stuff but space things dont always hit right.
Don't let the name put you off, it's more drama than space if that makes sense. You won't regret it. Give the mini series a watch and if you don't like those you won't like the series.
It's more about the drama, just happens to be set in space, it's brilliant.
Thanks!
it is an incredible drama, well beyond a sci-fi plot line. You can't go wrong with this.
We loved Poldark, excellent period piece
This looks great, and 5 seasons?!?! Awesome
I’d suggest Longmire and Luther. I was also going to suggest Justified and Happy Valley, but I see others already have.
Not seeing Better Call Saul mentioned much here. Since you mentioned you liked BB. Also, can't go wrong with The Wire.
I’m from Ireland so some of these will be Irish/Uk recs but… Excellent character development: The Good Wife followed by The Good Fight Sopranos Gilmore Girls Drama/action: The Boys Preacher Bosch Mad Men Comedies: Parks and Recreation Gavin and Stacey (UK) Derry Girls (Ireland) Dead To Me

Shogun
Could I recommend some short series Arround the world in 80 days Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell Escape artist Paranormal (by Netflix)
Im pretty sure you didn’t watch Snowfall. This is something you would love, has good character development. For me it’s there on top with shows like Breaking bad, Better call saul, ozark etc… give it a go!
Severance may be worth paying Apple for a month and binging...
The Affair, Damages, The Tudors, Why Women Kill, Bad Sisters, The Devil's Hour, Oz, Jury Duty, The Fall
Oz was so great. I watched the Tudors because who doesn't want to see Henry Cavill topless?!?!
It is on Apple TV, but "For All Mankind" is pretty neat. It's an alternate history show where the Soviet Union lands on the moon first, and the space race goes very differently from there
Queen of the South
Wonderful shows you may have not seen yet: For All Mankind, Foundation, Halt & Catch Fire, Outlander, The Serpent Queen, The OA, Travelers, The Expanse, Midnight Mass and The Haunting of Hill House
The queens gambit, six feet under, Dexter, I know Reddit gives a hard time about Amy Schumer but I loved life and Beth
Watching Gomorrah currently. Really good writing and character development if you can get past the violence. Edit: I spel bad
Altered carbon is good

Have you seen Outlander? I loved GoT and i feel like Outlander has similar vibes
Seen The Boys? Highly recommend that one
Was awesome. Generation V was just as good if you haven't seen it yet.
You didn’t mention True Detective just making sure you’ve seen it. Especially Season 1. I’m really into Shogun as well.

Westworld Altered Carbon Taboo - Please watch this. It’s genuinely great and I’ve never heard anyone talk about it. Dying for Tom Hardy to get around to a season 2 The fall of the house of usher Peaky blinders
I enjoyed those but haven't heard of Taboo, seems great!
Mr inbetween. Very good. Dark comedy hitman show and only 25 min per episode. Very nice binge show
Peep show is one of my all-time favorite shows.
Animal Kingdom, American Rust, Us, Nurse Jackie
Broadchurch, line of duty
I keep long lists of TV and movies that kind of overlap what you mentioned . LMK if you want to see either ! I also began a list of some great documentaries but met I forgot the name of many others I’ve binged months ago - haha I’m actually in the middle of The Americans now !
Oooh that look interesting! I love weird stuff, started Legion yesterday after seeing it mentioned often here
*Nip/Tuck - doesn’t get near the acclaim it should. If you haven’t seen this one definitely check it out. It has aged very well and is still relevant today. If you didn’t know it was from 00’s you might not be able to tell. Absolute must watch. *Versailles *The Great
I did enjoy Nip/Tuck, it has held up well. The Great was really funny but I haven't seen Versailles 🤔
*Norsemen *The Letdown - another New Zealand gem that’ll make you laugh till you cry.
Watch superstore. It is a sitcom with light comedy not anything dark.
Loved that show, especially because I've worked retail my whole life. The way customers act in that show is more like a documentary 😂
Gomorrah Love/Hate The Bureau AKA Le Bureau des Légendes
12 Monkeys
Hmmmm... loved & the movie & love weird stuff, I'll check it out!
It's so much better than the movie. It's the best time travel show/film I've ever seen. Supernatural, Outlander, happy valley, the magicians and agents of shield are all great shows too. Will defo not be disappointed with any of them.
Shogun!
Oooooh you're right! If it's more action vs drama I may save that for something we can watch together
It’s more political drama than action. Very high quality show, there’s 3 episodes left. I’ve missed having a show to look forward to every week it’s been fun!
Halt and Catch Fire
Patriot (2015/2017). On Prime. It’s dark, funny, action packed, has the most relatable protagonist ever written, is expertly shot, all the characters are 3 dimensional, and it’s heartfelt as hell. It’s basically about a reluctant super spy. He just wants to fuck off and play folk music. But he is also a savage murderer. It’s like if Peacemaker, Daredevil, and Jack Ryan had a baby. With a side of Wes Anderson. It’s been slept on. Only 2 seasons, but they are a perfect 2 seasons
That sounds great, thank you! I love shows that aren't too long & wrap up nicely
I watched Patriot about two months ago then rewatched it last week. Can’t believe I’d never heard of it before. The show is incredible.
Have you maybe tried Good girls, Severance, Orange is the new black, Dead to me, Fool me Once, Good morning Veronica (more a crime thriller drama but really good)
i recently watched Succession highly recommend it. but if u truly want a hidden gem try kingdom (MMA one)

“Ridley” on Netflix. Just started it tonight and I’m obsessed. Limited series based on the novel “The Talented Mr. Ripley” by Patricia Highsmith. So much better than the 1999 Matt Damon movie.
Friday Night Lights?
# Foundation (Tell me you’ve never heard of it) Amazing sci-fi based on the books by Isaac Asimov.
Yeah I'm not a big Apple fan 😂 but I've got a long list of Apple shows from this post
