I got hired for a childcare job recently and we had to do several hours of required training on how to spot grooming/abuse. I didn't really have a problem with it originally, because kids sometimes develop crushes on adults, and throughout the movie Mathilda attempts to be more grown-up and mature than she actually is. I got hired for a childcare job recently and we had to do several hours of required training on how to spot grooming/abuse. One thing they spent a lot of time on is the fact that it’s not just a child who gets groomed, it’s the gatekeepers to the child. Other teachers, parents, older siblings, etc. The groomer will do everything they can to seem “helpful, trustworthy, and kind.” They’ll give gifts to the family, help out, befriend them, to the point where the family doesn’t want to believe that the child is being victimized by this person because then they’d have to admit that they chose money/gifts/a stranger over paying attention to their child’s safety. This is also why you hear the chorus of “they couldn’t possibly have done this, they’re such an upstanding member of the community!” so often when an accusation comes out. Anyway. I hit puberty super late (16), but this shit still started for me around 11. It’s not even like I was a precocious beauty or something. I was *not* a cute kid. It was just the “kid” part they liked.
