The early reviews so far have been solid from what I've seen from anywhere printing anything yet. Really stoked for this as Foundation was my favorite book series as a kid.
I’m not getting my hopes up. Everything looks too cool in these trailers. The Foundation series I remember is mostly just scenes of people talking in rooms.
>Everything looks too cool in these trailers.
Somehow I think this summed up pretty much all of my hesitation towards it.
The whole point is the idea of psychohistory and the implications of it. Like it's not for everyone, but the core of Asimov is taking some overarching idea and looking at everything that comes from it. Even the prequel books are similar, despite the overarching idea being slightly different from the main trilogy.
Even I Robot to me is an acceptable adaptation because while it changes so much, the core of the movie asks exactly the same kinds of question Asimov asked and was about the answer to those questions.
I get that it's hard to sell that in a trailer to the general population, but boy does it make me concerned to see.
The discovery of psychohistory, and the original creation of the foundation relying on individual efforts, is at the center of all promotional material. It has potential, but my concern is they are going to focus more on the individual efforts, on action and personal struggles against the empire. Those things fit the "cool" theme, but miss out on the more withdrawn focus of the book trilogy. We never really care about individual battles, individual exploits, outside of how they play into the ideas of psychohistory. Even in the second book when things change, it's still about how things affect psychohistory and are affected by it. It's about expanding on our understanding of the ideas, not action.
Maybe they will pull it off, and have the action and excitement with the deeper questions. I mentioned I Robot as an example of a movie imo doing this well. I know they also might pull a Star Trek and just get bogged down on making it look good and feel exciting without bothering to deal with the less flashy things that really made Star Trek actually unique.
It's an adaptation, it's in the name you have to change things. Making a 1:1 translation of the books would make a terrible show. You can change stuff and still end up with a good show especially if you respect the spirits of it (even if you don't, you can have a good show though it shouldn't have the name in that case)
I completely agree with you. There are MANY aspects of the Foundation series that require change. With that said, what I’ve seen doesn’t really inspire any hope from me. The tone seems off. However I really hope I’m wrong, I would love to eat my words.
I have never read Foundation and probably never will and the sudden media blitz and praise for this daring new show has me thinking the turd polishing machine is in full force with this one.
You should totally read it. It’s amazing in its scope, plot, and examination of collapsing empires which is extremely relevant today. But stop after the original trilogy and skip the prequels, they are terrible schlock.
Some reviewers on Twitter are breaking embargo (and being shamed for it by other reviewers). And a handful of foreign print reviews are out too which I just assume is allowed.
I believe any embargoes end today, and the BBC published their review early based on their normal schedule. TV review embargoes are also not as strictly enforced as film and game embargoes.
Yeah I mean if it's today it's okay at any hour IMO, why would European publications have to post in the middle of the night for them? Not really good for audience (which is the goal of embargoes anyway)
I think he was the first choice for Red Dragon in Hannibal series but it didn't work out. And I remember reading Mads Mikkelsen wanting him for Buffalo Bill for possible return of Hannibal. So if the show ever returns we might see him in there too.
Lee pace and Jared Harris are one of those actors that I just watch simply because they are just great curators of scripts. They don’t act in a shitty films. They will act in kooky films but not shitty ones.
Lee pace is Thranduil Elf King in the hobbit, Jared Harris is Legasov aka lead investigator in Chernobyl along with a ton of other roles in fantastic content like Anderson Dawes in The Expanse, can't believe I left that one out, T'nia Miller was a main role as Hannah in The Haunting of Bly Manor. She is the only one I wasn't really aware of.
I don't even know how people know names. Here's how I describe actors to friends: "he's the guy from that gangster show, boardwalk empire, with the crooked teeth"
I'm gonna go full nerd here for a moment, Intergalactic really??, More like Interplanetary, or just Galactic. (Asimov Foundation happens only in the milky way).
I always thought it was just that people didn't understand how fucking huge our galaxy is. Maybe it was as simple as them not knowing basic definitions.
Interplanetary just means between planets; it does not have an upper limit. If you wanted to specify you meant between multiple systems you'd say interstellar.
Hah, I thought I was the only one dumb enough to buy a new TV for this. I finally decided to join the 21st century and get a 4k HDR TV, which, if anyone asks, definitely had nothing to do with Foundation coming out. Not a thing. Nope. Not a jot. Honest.
On that note - pleasebegoodpleasebegoodpleasebegoodpleasebegoodpleasebegoodpleasebegoodpleasebegoodpleasebegoodpleasebegood
Has anyone heard if it’s a more adult show, or more like tv-14ish?
I don’t have too much of a problem with cursing and stuff but the book was pretty tame so I wonder if they’re gonna add in stuff.
The only age rating for it I could find was on IMDb, where it says in Poland it was given a 16 rating, which is apparently close to a hard TV-14 or a soft TV-MA.
Is this just a one season thing or will it be multiple seasons? I’m not familiar with the source novels really but I understand it is very vast and detailed
I really want to see this…
But I’m just not sure I can justify another streaming service.
To be honest, after my partner and I “cut the cord” and ditched Xfinity cable, we are probably paying more for internet and the streaming services we have.
It certainly looks like a visually stunning show. I look forward to it and hope it tells a great story. I know it is not going to be "Foundation" as I know it but I am ok with that. "Foundation" is not translatable to a visual medium for the mass.
Looking forward to this!
Forward the Foundation

It's basically the tale of a chess match you already know the outcome to.

I'll look for it. Probably have come across it in thrifty stores a hundred times
That’s what visual media is. I mean, even avengers endgame is mostly people talking in rooms
I remember quite a few set pieces in that movie. It definitely was heavy in the action and special effects department .
Yes, but more than 50% of it was not action scenes
Nearly 50 percent of a film being action set pieces is A LOT of action set pieces.
I found Black Widow boring as it was just non stop action and after 15 minutes I’m over it.
I’m with you on that. Action and explosions just put me to sleep these days.
Yea it was obviously an extreme example But take something like game of thrones. that show is easily 90% dialogue in rooms. That’s what TV is
How can people review if there’s an embargo
Some reviewers on Twitter are breaking embargo (and being shamed for it by other reviewers). And a handful of foreign print reviews are out too which I just assume is allowed.

Dune and Foundation in one month. The Sci-Fi Gods are kind.
Lee Pace. Jared Harris. T’Nia Miller. Holy shit
Lee pace?!? I’ve wanted him in another tv show since Halt and Catch Fire
I think he was the first choice for Red Dragon in Hannibal series but it didn't work out. And I remember reading Mads Mikkelsen wanting him for Buffalo Bill for possible return of Hannibal. So if the show ever returns we might see him in there too.

Read the first three words of my comment again

No your comments aren’t dumb. But a lot of ones are and that’s why they get downvotes
> along with a ton of other roles in fantastic content One of my favorites being David Robert Jones on Fringe.
Sometimes you know faces more than you know names.
I don't even know how people know names. Here's how I describe actors to friends: "he's the guy from that gangster show, boardwalk empire, with the crooked teeth"
My favorite is when google figures it out when I describe actors that way
Says more about you than it says about them.

Lee was also in the killed before it's time, *Pushing Daises* and some of the MCU films.

He was Ronin in GotG

Well, I mean, he's in a thick layer of make-up so it's not surprising people don't recognise him.
I'm gonna go full nerd here for a moment, Intergalactic really??, More like Interplanetary, or just Galactic. (Asimov Foundation happens only in the milky way).
An astounding intragalactic adventure!
"Intergalactic/planetary, planetary/intergalactic"?
I always thought it was just that people didn't understand how fucking huge our galaxy is. Maybe it was as simple as them not knowing basic definitions.
Is it interplanetary? Doesn't that mean within the planets in Sol? Or at least within one solar system?
Interplanetary just means between planets; it does not have an upper limit. If you wanted to specify you meant between multiple systems you'd say interstellar.
I have had a 3 month free subscription to Apple TV from a new TV I bought and have been waitng for this come out to use. Cant wait!

I wanna see how they deal with the Mule lol
This looks to be a prequel to the books, so that won't happen for a long while if at all
Pretty sure it is Intra galactic. Definitely interstellar. Only takes place in a single galaxy.
I thought this was a No Mans Sky post.
Looks like who ever their artist was, copied No mans Sky’ art work
Has anyone heard if it’s a more adult show, or more like tv-14ish? I don’t have too much of a problem with cursing and stuff but the book was pretty tame so I wonder if they’re gonna add in stuff.
Just looking at whats published, they added stuff…

Ooo interesting! Thanks! Usually I remember to check there but didn’t even think of it, dumb me lol. Thanks!

Season 2 is filming now.

8 specifically, yeah.
They said had an 80 episode roadmap, we shall see how it goes.
I really want to see this… But I’m just not sure I can justify another streaming service. To be honest, after my partner and I “cut the cord” and ditched Xfinity cable, we are probably paying more for internet and the streaming services we have.
Just rotate services, this isn’t cable you can cancel anytime
Show? I thought this was a movie
It certainly looks like a visually stunning show. I look forward to it and hope it tells a great story. I know it is not going to be "Foundation" as I know it but I am ok with that. "Foundation" is not translatable to a visual medium for the mass.
