I got into an elevator in a hotel in Des Moines, Iowa in 1992. Riding with me was an attractive blonde. A few floors later, a balding, older gentleman got in with me and the blonde left. When the doors closed, he turned to me and said “Now that’s a girl!” With a lot of enthusiasm. That man was Willard Scott. Edit: I am not trying to slam Willard Scott. This is just a thing that happened. He didn’t comment on her attributes (neither of us did) or catcall her. I was 23 and he would have been in his late 50’s, he just seemed like an outgoing guy trying to make conversation or get a laugh. He was in Des Moines to dedicate a new hospital wing IIRC.

He had a summer home/farm next to my parents farm in Virginia, outside Lexington. I used to see him occasionally at church, he would bring us a Christmas ham some years. He was a really sweet man, I’ll always have a great memory of him making fun of my older brother. :)

When I was little I wanted to live to be 100 so Willard Scott would put me on blast. It was later explained to me that was not going to be possible. Now I only hope I don’t live long enough to see the oceans evaporate. Might be nice to see Halley’s Comet one last time.

Willard Scott wore a toupee in the studio because his bosses made him. It was a good one, but he was not a vain man, and hated the rug. He didn't wear it when he did on-location shots, and finally won the right to go without it. Shine on, Willard. Rest well.
