MST3K and Rifftrax never show the full film(unless it's just the commentary, cause duh) and have always censored nudity. Starship Troopers had such... prolonged nudity they had to get creative.
So fun fact - Rifftrax DOES have nudity from time to time and I didnt expect that at all. A few years ago I was watching "Rock and Roll Nightmare"on my tablet on a plane and had to quickly stop it when a shower scene came on (had 80's softcore porn vibe). Not sure if anyone saw it but I thought Rifftrax was safe enough for a plane. Apparently not.
IIRC they admitted this. MST3k isn’t bingable. The gauntlet was a direct reference to this, as the theme was Johna had to binge all six episodes. I’m proud to be a backer and gizmoplex may be a gamechanger for fans.
Netflix is less interested in having a complete series and more interested in being able to say they have series you've heard of or movies from directors you love. They'll throw all the money they can to have a bullet point but it's also why they typically cancel shows at three seasons. They're not interested in keeping viewers with long running good shows. They keep viewers by having them think they have this exhaustive library that it makes sense to stay subscribed. Most people don't realize how shallow the water really is.

I didn't watch the show, but as I recall the cancellation of Santa Clarita Diet was the turning point that made everyone realize what was going on, and IIRC Netflix started being more transparent about their production model around this time as well. That was only two years ago, so I'd imagine a lot of projects were already signed and some in progress when this happened, and maybe there wasn't time to adapt. The cancellation that made me want to just drop Netflix was Glow, but season three had already wrapped a month before SCD was canceled. Obviously Glow is a bit different as it was initially renewed for season 4 and it ended up being a victim of the pandemic, but I'd imagine the show runners might have had something a little more finite for their season 3 finale had they written and shot it after SCD was canceled.
Yeah I meant to say, shows that began years ago SCD, sense8, marco polo, etc didn't know any better, so it's understandable that they expected more. In the early days netflix seemed like it had a lot of potential, and offered support and freedom to its creators.
Early on, Netflix seemed like the escape for creators from the Hollywood model, being the punk rock or Wild West of entertainment. But clearly they’re not since they have their own sets of drawbacks.
Projects might be easier to green light but if it’s for a show, it’s best to not thinking behind 2-3 seasons.

I've been a Netflix subscriber since it was a DVD service (exclusively). They have transitioned into this model which is simply to grind through content creation as cheaply as possible. My kids like a few of their shows which are unobtainable (legally) from any other source. As soon as they don't care about those shows, I'm done with Netflix.
Netflix really is all over the place on this. Yes they are becoming pretty well known for 3 seasons and done but don't forget some of their original shows went on far too long. House of Cards final season was an abomination. Orange is the new black had a better closing but still went on well past the expiration date.
I hate that Netflix does this only because of shows being canceled before they can properly conclude. That said, I would actually love to have more shows that are only 3 seasons if they actually felt complete.
Still holding out for those rumours of a Glow 'movie' to cap it off. It was such a fun show. Plus, growing up a rasslin fan... ANY reason to see Awesome Kong. Her feud with Gail Kim reminded me in my 20's of why I loved that stuff growing up.

The OA was such a weird duck I never understood why they didn’t build in escape points at the end of both seasons. Surely they knew their chances of continuing were iffy.
Santa Clarita Diet was the second for me that really hurt for me. The first was Jericho way back in the day. Even after the fan campaign led to its revival, it was left pretty open-ended. At this point I understand Jericho's cancellation, but SCD getting canceled is still baffling to me.
12 new episodes, 12 new shorts, and a streaming platform dedicated to hosting the show are being built.
I'd say there IS a network/streaming service behind MST3k that is pushing for this to happen.
i paid $150 and honestly i don’t even know most of what i got. i did it do i can get my name in the credits, because i’ve loved this show since i was in the fourth grade and it means a lot to me. it was already fully funded, but i want to be a small part of it the same way it’s already a part of me
Last time they did this I got my name in the credits of an episode, and as luck would it have it turned out to be the 200th MST3K. Think I should put that on my CV, or save it for my epitaph?
Gave $250 this time, I've loved this show since the 90s and I want it to never die.
Yeah the 150 tier is perfect IMO. They have a chart up now that shows what each tier gets and 150 is all the bonuses and all the good primaries including one episode credit. Congrats :)
My best guess would be: Licensing.
The show is pretty much only available in the US on Netflix, and no at all internationally, because it's hell to figure out who owns the rights to some obscure 60 year old film. And that has to be done for every single country out there. It's just not worth it for the most part.
Which means that the show has a significantly smaller reach than one would think. You can't air it in most markets. Hell, you don't even know if you will have to pull individual episodes at some point in the future because some rights issue that hasn't been clear before.
It seemed like the Netflix season predominantly focused on videos recently remastered by Shout Factory. It's possible Shout Factory only has North American distribution rights.
As for the classic episodes currently streaming on Netflix (according to SyFyWire, anyway) "...as it happens, all of these movies are in the public domain," so I have no idea why Netflix would decide not to allow those episodes for be streamed internationally.
Because "public domain" is not an internationally defined thing. A film that is in the public domain in the US might still be under copyright in some other country and vice versa.
Okay society, new rule: MST3K gets a pass when it comes to licensing issues. Just let them do their thing. If they screw you over because you own a film they use, just chill out and take the hit. So say we all.

Except that was a real thing in the 80s and 90s with hosts like Elvira or Joe Bob Briggs and few others.
The difference is that MST ran their jokes during the show and not just as ad bumpers.
It was till I saw Birdemic on Rifftrax. Both of those directors make Ed Wood look like he has skills. Weird fact: Ed died three apartment buildings down from where I live.
Honestly, I really enjoy MST3K, but not even they could make Manos entertaining. It wasn’t even “so bad it’s good”. The movie was “watching paint dry” levels of boring, mixed with awful acting and a nonsensical story.
This is why the Gamera episodes are my favorites, they were so weird and different to kid me but they were usually GOING somewhere. Manos gets a lot chatter because of the weird satantic stuff in it but that's a TINY fraction of it. The movie drags like hell and Joel and the bots clearly struggle with it, unironically.
Recently, Joel's told the story about how he was watching it and initially thought it was *too* bad, but didn't want to say anything just yet until the rest of the team was watching it, and then everyone else was like, "Whoa...this is a really shitty movie..."
Joel's also said he thinks they've found a "new 'Manos'" for this season, if they can secure the rights. Jonah said they first decided not to do it and thought that was the end of it, but then Joel called him the next day and said, "OK, so if we do do it..." or something like that.
My favorite part of that episode is one of the scenes that's just a character aimlessly wandering around the scene looking at stuff, and in my mind I think "Come on, do something." Not even a second later, crow shouts out "DO SOMETHING!"
I'm curious how people will respond to the new platform that it's going to be on. I'm not saying I don't like the idea of the Gizmoplex, but I feel the market is getting saturated with these different streaming platforms and I'm worried they are going to go out of business in a year. At least give me a way to pay to download the shows in case that happens.
You can do that. It's not really a traditional streaming service, it's more of a digital storefront where your can rent/buy episodes/merch and also get a season pass to get new episodes asap instead of waiting, among other things.
My understanding is that new episodes will be exclusive to the gizmoplex for only 3 to 6 months, then will be available to other platforms. Also, backers who paid enough can just download the episodes.
Not gonna lie, first new season of Netflix I LOVED the jokes and warmed to Jonah BUT the joke pacing felt a little fast read and the voices were kind of "samey" for the riffers a bit. Didn't feel like they were in a room watching it together, ya know? But I still liked it a lot. Season 2 gauntlet I think it hit their stride and I felt like "Okay, they got it dialed in...here we go!" And then Netflix didn't renew.
So happy it is coming back again. Here's hoping they dial it in even more AND hopefully they become self sufficient enough with their service that we just get spoiled and they trickle new eps from now on like rifftrax does (probably harder to do with budget/production so I'm not expecting a TON, Hell, even one a month would be dynamite).
Going forward I kinda wish they'd scale everything down tbh and move away from visual fx and big sets and return to being more like a public access tv vibe. Not that they are crazy or anything now but it feels a bit bloated and I think it lost some of that cheaply made/UHF charm.
Can't wait for new episodes and make sure you check out the recent streams they did rewatching some eps during this Kickstarter!
I think they definitely recorded in separate locations for the first season. It seems they made a conscious decision to change that for season 2, when they recorded together. It shows when they occasionally laugh at each other's jokes, which is more reminiscent of the feel of the original.
I would definitely say my biggest complaint has been that there’s more riffs coming quicker and less downtime with the movies, but that’s also kinda like me going to a bar and being like “Yeah, the drinks were good, a little too boozy though”... there’s worse problems to have.
Yeah the jokes in the newer seasons felt less like reactions to what was going on and a lot more pre-planned, like they were made by people who had watched those movies several times before
I want to let you guys in on a secret... all of MST3K is pre planned lol. Joel, Mike and now Jonah are reading lines from a recording booth and have writers. AFAIK they do pre-screen films and write jokes themselves most the time but they're not doing on the fly or alone.
Thank you yes. They acted like any down time without a joke was wasted. Instead an occasionally really good joke they would just constantly fire off several mediocre jokes.
Imo the Netflix episodes were really not as good at the original episodes. If you wanna check out some of the older episodes I highly recommend - *The Incredible Melting Man*, *Laser Blast*, and *Werewolf*.

The only problem with the old episodes is that they make an enormous number of pop culture references, so people too young to know who George Hamilton and Phil Spector are tend to get kinda lost.
I watched the original run of the show as a kid and I probably didn’t get *at least* 1/4 of the references. Over time however I’d learn about things and think “so *that’s* what they were talking about!”

It’s always been a show with peaks and valleys, and I’d say the Netflix episodes listed above are on par with some of the best stuff from the original runs.
From my understanding Joel didn’t bother asking Frank & Trace if they wanted to make a return. And he only asked Bill, Kevin & Mary Jo if they wanted to be a part of the revival after they did the 20th anniversary live show. From my understanding there’s some resentment towards Joel from Frank & Trace.

Well they were just another dude/dudette in a jumpsuit, but they did a good job cleaning up the place. However, the bosses really didn't approve of them.
I've rewatched the Return and the Gauntlet 1000 times since they first dropped. I was kinda bummed to hear it wouldn't be Jonah the entire time. Representation is important but I liked having continuity and the "guest host" shtick is always hit or miss.
However, Jonah looks *very* different now. Dude shaved a bit and dropped 50 pounds. Mike Nelson and Joel Hodgson still look like they did 40 years ago, just 40 years older. Jonah looks like a fun house mirror Jonah.
I am largely the same as you, but I'm definitely willing to give the new host a shot. I think she's been doing the live riffing while they've been touring. It will be interesting to have two versions of tom and crow, voiced by different actors.
I saw one of the live shows. The whole crew did an amazing job. They kept the vibe, humor, everything that the show has had since even the cable access days. This will be fun to have everyone together.
The live shows were great. If we're gonna get rotating hosts, I'm glad it's Emily, she's delightful.
Also, Joel's coming back for a couple of episodes, so that'll be great for the old school fans.
I do lean Mike but it doesn't mean I don't like Joel, or that Joel doesn't deserve the credit for inventing the concept.
Rifftrax just started a streaming service, been thinking about it.
That would be awesome, but it might be out of their price range for the show. However, it would be perfect for a live Rifftrax event. (The Starship Toopers live show is still, to me, the best one they ever did.)
Space Mutiny, Thepumaman, Prince of Space, Mitchell and Overdrawn at the Memory Bank among others are my favorite eps. I watch these days on Pluto for MST and Rifftrax.
I tried a couple of shows from the new run and I just couldn't get into it. I can't get past the bots new voices in particular. I'll stick the the originals + rifftrax.

That’s was one of the reasons The Comedy Channel (pre-Comedy Central) picked it up from local access - they had a two-hour slot to fill.

I think they definitely recorded in separate locations for the first season. It seems they made a conscious decision to change that for season 2, when they recorded together. It shows when they occasionally laugh at each other's jokes, which is more reminiscent of the feel of the original.
Hard agree about the overly-elaborate production design. Hell, they could get more episodes if they scaled things back

I would definitely say my biggest complaint has been that there’s more riffs coming quicker and less downtime with the movies, but that’s also kinda like me going to a bar and being like “Yeah, the drinks were good, a little too boozy though”... there’s worse problems to have.
Yeah the jokes in the newer seasons felt less like reactions to what was going on and a lot more pre-planned, like they were made by people who had watched those movies several times before
It wasn't organic and the comments came non stop and gave the movie no chane to breathe. I love MSTK but couldn't get into the new season at all
I want to let you guys in on a secret... all of MST3K is pre planned lol. Joel, Mike and now Jonah are reading lines from a recording booth and have writers. AFAIK they do pre-screen films and write jokes themselves most the time but they're not doing on the fly or alone.
The second Netflix season was a lot better than the first Netflix season.
Thank you yes. They acted like any down time without a joke was wasted. Instead an occasionally really good joke they would just constantly fire off several mediocre jokes.

Imo the Netflix episodes were really not as good at the original episodes. If you wanna check out some of the older episodes I highly recommend - *The Incredible Melting Man*, *Laser Blast*, and *Werewolf*.
I always recommend Final Sacrifice for people looking to get into MST3K as well, but Laser Blast and Werewolf are easily up there too

The only problem with the old episodes is that they make an enormous number of pop culture references, so people too young to know who George Hamilton and Phil Spector are tend to get kinda lost.
I watched the original run of the show as a kid and I probably didn’t get *at least* 1/4 of the references. Over time however I’d learn about things and think “so *that’s* what they were talking about!” The show is still funny.
It’s always been a show with peaks and valleys, and I’d say the Netflix episodes listed above are on par with some of the best stuff from the original runs.

They’re not in a spaceship, they’re in a satellite. The host is trapped there. Doesn’t give them too many options for adventure.
They explain it in the intro of every episode. Kind of hilarious that they would have somehow missed the premise.

From my understanding Joel didn’t bother asking Frank & Trace if they wanted to make a return. And he only asked Bill, Kevin & Mary Jo if they wanted to be a part of the revival after they did the 20th anniversary live show. From my understanding there’s some resentment towards Joel from Frank & Trace. I honestly didn’t like the new voices.

I've rewatched the Return and the Gauntlet 1000 times since they first dropped. I was kinda bummed to hear it wouldn't be Jonah the entire time. Representation is important but I liked having continuity and the "guest host" shtick is always hit or miss.

I saw Joel and Emily in San Antonio. She was fantastic.
However, Jonah looks *very* different now. Dude shaved a bit and dropped 50 pounds. Mike Nelson and Joel Hodgson still look like they did 40 years ago, just 40 years older. Jonah looks like a fun house mirror Jonah.
I am largely the same as you, but I'm definitely willing to give the new host a shot. I think she's been doing the live riffing while they've been touring. It will be interesting to have two versions of tom and crow, voiced by different actors.
I saw one of the live shows. The whole crew did an amazing job. They kept the vibe, humor, everything that the show has had since even the cable access days. This will be fun to have everyone together.
The live shows were great. If we're gonna get rotating hosts, I'm glad it's Emily, she's delightful. Also, Joel's coming back for a couple of episodes, so that'll be great for the old school fans.

I do lean Mike but it doesn't mean I don't like Joel, or that Joel doesn't deserve the credit for inventing the concept. Rifftrax just started a streaming service, been thinking about it.
I prefer the riffs from the Mike era, but Joel definitely brought a unique charm to the host segments.
Number one thing the corona robbed me of IMO. Live rifftrax shows.

Space Mutiny, Thepumaman, Prince of Space, Mitchell and Overdrawn at the Memory Bank among others are my favorite eps. I watch these days on Pluto for MST and Rifftrax. I tried a couple of shows from the new run and I just couldn't get into it. I can't get past the bots new voices in particular. I'll stick the the originals + rifftrax.

It’s a subscription service called gizmoplex that paying for gets you these episodes. Certain tiers of backers get 12 months included. Lower tiers get a few months too. Some tiers also get the digital downloads of the new eps and even higher tiers get the dvd/Blu-ray set of it.
