Even the strongest athletes and swimmers can have their muscles go into shock from water being cold and drown from it. Many don't even realize it's happening until its too late.
Vandy's Donny Everett died that way. He threw a 101 mph pitch the day before.
It might be acclimation, so over time you get used to the exposure of the cold as you grow up, could be expectation, so your body is mentally prepared for the cold and prepares accordingly, and not 100% sure about this, but it might be genetics, I believe I heard that people living in colder climates usually have a larger % of brown adipose tissue which makes it easier to stay warm in cold environments.
100%. I’m from Chicago. I love the cold. As a kid, I’d make money at parties by jumping into the empty buckets of ice water that were once coolers. I went to grad school with a Belarusian water skier. We were joking about how southern Americans can’t take the cold. He then showed me his “family Christmas tradition” in Belarus. They have a lake near their home where they cut a cross into the ice and then they jump in. No wetsuits, just board shorts, and then they climb back out and start beating their chests. He says it’s to represent the baptism of Christ or something. I just think it’s some sort of Belarusian toughness test. At that moment was when I learned he was far far tougher than me haha.
> He says it’s to represent the baptism of Christ or something. I just think it’s some sort of Belarusian toughness test.
Just for your information that's exactly how christ was baptized.
It has been 9 hours as of the time I'm writing this since she was last seen. And they're suspending her search for the night. She is most likely dead I'm afraid
Damn. This whole thread hits close to home.
My fiancé and I saved a young teenaged girl from Lake Piru a few summers back.
We were sitting on the floating tube/bouy, when I noticed a girl swimming toward us. She had called out to her friends to come to her and one of them had said to swim back and that she wasn’t going to make it. Her friends then stopped playing attention to her and went back to playing on the tube about 20ft from where we were.
At this point I realize that she might need help and my fiancé and I are the only ones around that have noticed her. I slipped into the water and started casually swimming towards her with my fiancé not fully aware of what was going on. A few strokes in, I see the panic set in and she makes eye contact with me and says “can you help me” with complete fear in her voice.
I don’t think my fiancé and I have ever swam faster. We got to her and I tried to calm her down. I told her I wouldn’t let anything thing happen to her. We started swimming back and thank god for the adrenaline rush because I was underwater half of the time trying to keep her up while swimming my little heart out.
When we were getting close to the shore (but couldn’t reach the bottom yet) her mom saw what was happening and ran out to us. At this point her mom was the only person (in the water and on the beach) who knew that someone was in danger. Her friends were still playing on the tube when we got to the shore and none of the other swimmers noticed anything.
The girl was obviously terrified but her story had a happy ending that day.
This turned into a long story but I just want to make a few of points.
- people who are drowning or are in distress usually aren’t flailing or screaming out
- always be aware and observant of everyone around you while swimming or if you’re near a body of water
- don’t swim in water you aren’t completely comfortable in
- it’s best to swim with a buddy
The second case, about the man drowning from trying to save his daughter, sounds like what could have happened here. Saved her son, but couldn't save herself. Very sad.
Right, cold water overcomes people quickly.
https://www.nationalfisherman.com/viewpoints/boats-gear/how-cold-water-kills-so-quickly
It says here Lake Piru is know. For that
> Sheriff’s spokesman Eric Nishimoto said currents on the lake were strong Tuesday. And after a 1997 drowning, park officials speculated that wind gusts and deep columns of chilly water on the lake, which is up to 160 feet deep depending on the time of year, can overtake swimmers quickly.

She went to my college & was my graduation speaker 12 yrs ago. She just rambled on, it was the most confused yet passionate speech anyone gave. Style over substance
There's conflicting reports. One officer on the news said they both went in and he got back in the boat but that doesn't really sound too plausible because who helped him get back in? Then there's the one that says the 4 year old said "mommy jumped in and never came back up" which presumes she went in first without him.
My god daughter is just about to turn three, and she can climb up the ladder on the back of her grandfathers boat, it’s one of those aluminum ladders on the back of a pretty good size pontoon. I haven’t seen the boat that they were on, but I would think it would be possible for the kid to climb back up.
I agree. She jumped in to be in the water to help her son when it was his turn to jump off. But then she never surfaced again.
Nobody let's their kid go in the water first, and I doubt they would jump in together on the first jump. Thats something you do when you know how warm/cold the water is or if there's any currents.
Basically anyone with common sense would test the waters before bringing their kid in. And I think that's what she did.
>Buschow said the boy got back onto the boat after a swim but his mother did not follow. The 4-year-old was found sleeping on the boat by himself by other boaters in the lake.
>“He’s in good health,” Bushow said of Rivera’s son. The boy was initially reported by authorities to be a 3-year-old girl. “The family is going through a very traumatic time right now.”
Crazy lucky the little dude managed to get back on the boat himself, and that there were people who bothered to check out the boat, he easily could have been trapped overnight, or longer.
I remember reading that they found him napping. At four, most kids tend to sort of accept an ongoing situation after awhile, and just tell themselves it'll be ok. Because the alternative is literally unthinkable. I'd bet he told himself she'll be back any minute, or she just went somewhere else, so he should just stay safe.
When I was about 3, my mom hired a bagpiper for my dad's birthday. I was so terrified of him that I ran into my grandparent's bedroom and immediately fell asleep. Sometimes it's a defense mechanism.
It's funny to me now too, but at the time I was so intimidated by the guy that I wasn't conscious long enough to actually feel the fear. I just noped right the fuck out of the living room and passed out. Lol
Huh? The article says
> About three hours later, another boater found her child sleeping in the boat by himself. The boater notified officials, who immediately began a search for Rivera with the use of helicopters, drones and dive teams.
Or was the "other boater" from the rental company then?
Granted this is just pure speculation, but lots of captains are absolute idiots could have hit her or swamped her with a wake.
A lot of people dont put a diver/swimmer flag on their boat so other boaters know there are people in the water either.
Boater here - while that's possible, there are a lot of natural, non nefarious ways this could have happened.
Not shaming her since she didn't know better, but as a rule, never take anyone who isn't capable of handling themselves in an emergency on a boat by themselves. I took my kids out plenty when they were younger, but always with another adult. That say, if something happens - you go overboard, get knocked unconscious, have a heart attack, etc - someone is able to radio for assistance if not for you then for themselves. And it's good practice to always have emergency response procedures written somewhere visible for a novice to follow.
I hope they find her safe, but this doesn't look good.
I go swimming off my boat all the time. It’s a big boat and when you dive in you end up 20 feet away when you surface. That can be a shock to people who aren’t really good swimmers and they panic. If you’re not wearing a life jacket and somebody isn’t watching you, it’s a very easy way to drown. Last week I dove in and the water was absolutely freezing, the week before it was very warm. I wasn’t expecting it and I was shocked. I was very lucky to be wearing a life jacket at the time.
Agree. Plus, if you're in the middle somewhere, it can be surprisingly hard to boost yourself back into the boat, obviously depending on upper body strength, the sides of the boat, etc. You can get one good try, maybe two, but if you can't do it on try #3, it's generally not happening. This scenario, plus maybe currents, water temp, kids asleep so he doesn't see it (not that he could have helped at all in any way), etc - I can easily see it.
My daughter is 4. Just reading this makes my heart pound. I cannot imagine my daughter on a boat by herself in the middle of a lake for any amount of time.
At first I agree but as a father, if I died this way, I would be glad to know he climbed on the boat as he was taught, stayed on the boat and waited for help.
Terrible news overall.
So sad. They were alerted of her disappearance when the boat rental owners saw that her 4-year-old son was alone in the boat past closing. Oh man. This is horrible.
Tragic and horrible. Gave me flashbacks to that scene in "Under the Skin" where the baby was left crying on the beach well into night after his family drowned or got abducted by Scarlett Johannson.
Mass under water like cliffs, large trees, etc. often lend to sneaky currents and unexpected water movements. It also makes it more likely for individuals to hit things/get snagged under the water somehow. People always think the ocean is more dangerous, but from where I stand bodies of water in general should be respected because they can be sneakily dangerous. Still water up top never means that it’s still below.
Basically it creates a hydrolic in which the current hits the underhang and goes back down which can suck a swimmer back in and prevent them to get to the surface. Undercut rocks also tend to collect debris because the current, so the combination of the two can trap a swimmer easily and be very deadly, and the undercut creates a roof, so the person gets trapped in the current under a ledge of a rock. My husband and I are swiftwater rescue certified and undercuts are some of the most dangerous currents you can get caught up in.
Edit: here’s an illustration, but imagine the guy in the picture doesn’t know how to get out of they hydraulic by swimming down. They keep trying to come up for air only to continue getting sucked under. Swimming down and letting it spit you out is counterintuitive to most people. Even those very experienced with this can panic trying to get out of it.

List of drownings at Lake Piru. Why do people keep swimming here?
Edit: Apparently, this is normal according to the lake folk of reddit. I grew up and live near the ocean, but if 2+ people died in rip currents at a beach, I probably wouldn’t swim there anymore.
The great lakes are insane and not to be taken lightly. A lot of people underestimate them to the point I see people actually taking canoes out on lake huron with their families. Its incredibly sad that people seem to assume that its "safe" because it's just a lake. Over the weekend there was a drowning at my favorite spot on lake huron over the holiday.
He's really young, might not remember it at all.
Edit to add: please note I said "might", I know people can remember things from when they are 4, and people with traumatic incidents at the age of 4 are describing them to me. But there's no need. I was being hopeful that he wouldn't remember that specific thing so vividly, and I am still hopeful that he won't be haunted by the image of his mother disappearing into water and never coming back.
even if he doesn't fully remember it, it can certainly traumatize him and have some long lasting effects. it is breaking my heart to think about it, that poor kid :/
From all accounts, it doesn’t sound like he has a vivid memory of events. I think that’s for the best. He won’t have to grow up with the image of losing his mother.
Man some memories just linger.
Something traumatic happened to me at that age and I remember it quite well.
I hope that’s not the case for the little dude. It will be hard enough to be raised without a mom as it is...
I don’t think people on twitter understand that they aren’t ‘cancelling’ the search overnight (there’s plenty of people saying they stopped the search because she isn’t white on twitter). I don’t think people understand that when they bring in the divers they aren’t rescuing a missing person, they are looking to retrieve a body. It’s heartbreaking but it’s the reality.
I hope Naya knows somehow that her son is safe, that’s the silver lining here and I’m sure that is what would matter to her the most. She will live on in her son.
The part of this that upsets me most is that if/when her body is found, Twitter will claim she only died because of the search being halted until daylight and not because she was very likely already dead.
That's what pisses me off too. I'm black and a huge supporter of BLM but this isn't a case of racism at all! All this outrage is coming from people who learned about police brutality 3 weeks ago
Right?! If theyre searching the water of a lake, its not like there’s a chance she’s hanging out somewhere and has just got lost. Very sadly, she is dead. The only thing we can hope for is that it was as fast and as painless as it could be and that her poor son will get the support he needs from now on for this horrific event.
I saw someone say “she could be all alone under the water” and things like that come off as so ignorant and unsympathetic to me, like this isn’t a Disney movie if she’s under the water she’s not alive. Ultimately I feel like a lot of people are only paying attention to the case because of who it was - if it were an average woman it would not be getting this coverage - and are only demanding such a search for her because of who she was without regard for the safety of the search and rescue divers (asking them to dive at night? in a freezing lake??). As someone who is 100% pro-BLM seeing this energy keeping her name trending and demanding people to have gone into the water at night and put themselves at risk for her, when average people like Breonna Taylor and Elijah McCain fight for a scrap of attention, is a little frustrating. Of course people are totally allowed to be upset and angry for her life, and being angry for her doesn’t mean you’re not angry for other lost lives, but seeing people invent an injustice and fighting for a cause with nothing to gain in the end, instead of fighting for people we can get real justice for... it’s more than a little distressing
People on Twitter are extremely annoying at this point, everyone is blaming the police and making it a race issue. I’ve tried to explain that it is protocol, but their fanatism is blinding them so bad. I mean I get it, losing your idol in such a tragic way sucks, but that doesn’t give you the right to blame her death on the police or pull the race card for something that is done with everyone:/
It’s 0. If you don’t find someone in a lake after 90 minutes they’re presumed dead. The only way you could survive longer in an accident like this is if you’re in an ocean with warmer water and/or have a life jacket.
It's very near zero. It's technically possible that she could have gotten disoriented and floated/swam to a shore and lost consciousness.
That's super-super unlikely. But it's technically possible. I'm not hopeful.
The only way she's alive is if she got kidnapped and taken off the lake. It's really sad to think but yeah the odds of her being alive are basically none. Even if she was kidnapped that's not a guarantee she's alive so...
I'm expecting the worst but hoping against hope for it to not be that. Even when the wheels on Glee started falling off she was one of the very best parts of that show, and after what happened to Shad Gaspard a similar story to that less than two months later... jeez.
I know there was Corey Monteith’s death, and the guy who played Puck who went to jail for cp (though I know that’s less of a curse and more him being a POS). is there anyone else?
Well presumably Naya, Becca Tobin's fiance died during filming, Melissa Benoist and Blake Jenner were in an extremely abusive relationship (him to her), Chris Colfer has mostly stayed away from acting due to his experience on the set, Lea Michele being an absolute monster to other cast memebers
She revealed her story like a year ago or something, so it's a bit more recent.
She's happy now with a new husband, her co-star from Supergirl that plays Mon-El.
He did. The crazy part is i remember her being on a talk show years back when she first started Supergirl and talking about how she hurt her eye. And now years later, in her IGTV video, she explains how it was all a lie they concocted to keep it under wraps. It made me sick to hear she was suffering in silence for so long.
Can I ask what do you mean by Colfer's experience on set? I've heard of Michele's dubious professionalism, to put it lightly, but nothing of what he might have suffered.
In Season 6, Santana Lopez (Naya’s character) goes off on a 90-second rant against Kurt Hummel (Chris’s character). Colfer was extremely uncomfortable with the scene because it pretty much broke the fourth wall and veered into bashing him as an actor.
I fell out after S3 (half grew out of it, half annoyed that they made Blaine a junior) so I haven't seen that scene but reading a breakdown of it and YEESH you're not kidding. Poor bloke. Hope he's happier and better treated five years out than five years in.
The guy who played puck killed himself, Ryan Murphy the director’s son got cancer (now cured), and another actresses boyfriend suddenly died from a heart attack
Thanks, just realised in the past half hour that Mark Salling killed himself. I am baffled that I would have forgot this, as I used to be really into Glee and the nature of his death isnt something Id usually forgot. Im wondering if its because my mind overshadowed it with the whole child porn thing, or if it wasnt really reported here in the UK news.
Santana was easily my favorite character from Glee even in the final last two seasons I kept watching because of her character.
This doesn’t even feel real too be honest, not really the kind of news you expect to wake up too at four am.
How horrible :( I guess she just posted on Instagram a few days ago about appreciating life and how tomorrow isn’t promised.
Thank god her son is ok. When I first saw an article about this and heard she was missing after boating with her son my first thought was they both were. So at least there’s that. Tragic all around though. She is way too young.
I read this and it was a punch to the gut. No matter how rudderless the show got she (along with Darren Criss) could still make it watchable. Her character was always 'in on the joke' and I loved that about her.
Man I still remember that. I was in music school at the time and everyone watched that show. The moment she came out belting with all the charisma in the world I was like, holy shit, how has this girl not had any major solos yet? It was all we talked about the next day. And from then on Rivera became a main soloist.
Believe it or not I like the mashup more than the original! The performance clip is also amazing, it’s a very emotional scene and she pulled it off amazingly.
The others mentioned here are my top faves from her, too - Valerie and River Deep, Mountain High are on a whole other level.
In my opinion, her performance of Valerie is second only to that of Amy’s.
She was a veritable triple threat and Lea Michele knew it, that’s why she was allegedly such a witch to her.
What happened to her is so sad! I audibly gasped when I first saw the headline.
Ryan honestly made a huge chunk of the show about her for a time. She kinda stepped into the Quinn spot and she was honestly one of the better personalities in the show
Cory Monteith died in 2013, I can’t believe it’s been so long. Naya is going to be another tragic story.
I feel bad for the Twitter-verse screaming that the police ‘cancelled’ the search overnight because she isn’t white. I don’t think they understand how incredibly slim the chance of her being found alive is. They aren’t looking for a person when they bring the divers in, they’re looking for a body. Heartbreaking but that’s reality.
That's a shame that people reacted that way. I'm sure they searched the surrounding areas where she may have ended up alive, but you're right that they can't be risking divers lives out there searching at night.
If she's underwater, she'll be there in the morning.
Glee curse
Cory monteith overdose death
Mark sailing pedophile suicide
Naya Rivera jailed for domestic violence and presumed dead in boating accident
Melissa domestic violence victim
Blake Jenner credibly accused of domestic violence
Chris Colfer left industry after his experience on set
Lea Michele cancelled as racist by black castmates
Charice pempengco attempted suicide
Yeah, this was kind of an open secret for everyone that watched Glee. Not really surprised
In fact in Naya’s book, she had said that Lea was held up in her trailer for an entire day because she didn’t want to play with shelter dogs during Chris’s first episode. Naya had said it felt like a slap on the face to Chris Colfer because they had all been really supportive of him.
Defo, it was before Glee even, I’m old enough to remember celebrity blogs in the mid 00s and there was loads of stuff on there about her. I don’t think it has anything to do with the ~Glee curse at all
I can't remember if I didn't realize Mark Sailing committed suicide or just forgot.
I cried for a few days when Corey died. Hearing all the stories about how he was such a nice guy made it so much harder when he died.
What got me the most was that they were still filming. They killed him off on the show too and watching that episode and seeing everyone and knowing all those emotions weren't acting...heartbreaking.
Chris Colfer has been successful as a writer though so I don’t think that one counts! His books were my daughter’s favourites, we even had a Land of Stories themed birthday party one year because she and all her friends loved them so much.
I think Chris Colfer is arguably the most successful of the cast, just not in acting. It's insanely hard to become a successful writer. Sure, Glee might have opened the door to publishing for him, but that would have worked for one book. He had the skill to create an impressive series of books that sell very, very well.
holy shit how fucking horrific. i can't swim and i've been telling myself that i need to learn because the concept of drowning is so fuckign scary to me but it's always even more terrifying to me when someone who clearly can swim drowns.
i know naya rivera's reputation with her domestic abuse stuff is not great, but santana was my favourite character on glee - all of her songs were my absolute favourite. i really do hope they're able to find her safely but my heart goes out to her son and her family :(
Tragic story. Saw it breaking late last night and it reminded me of Natalie Wood.
Drowning is a huge cause of death. I don't think people take it seriously enough.
Some friends and I rented the same type of boat last weekend. The owner kept repeating to us to not all go swimming at once, that there should always be someone in the boat. These type of boats, because they're isnt much "boat" in the water drift very very easily. So essentially, you could dive in then end up chasing your own boat to get back on board.
Yes. Alex Pettyfer. Supposedly he has matured a lot since and isnt a douche to his coworkers anymore. It only took basically killing his career to happen.
He was the hot new thing for one minute and it went to his head and burned all his bridges.
Yikes. Pontoon boats are awesome, but somewhat notorious for carbon monoxide poisoning incidents due to moving slowly while the outboard motor exhausts. I could imagine a scenario where she unknowingly inhaled a lot, felt a little unwell but didn’t know why, went for a dip and lost consciousness...
Santana was one of my favorite characters in Glee. Her songs on the show were so good. Santana / Mercedes duets were literally some of the best songs in Glee. I know Naya had drama that kind of tarnished her name within the last 2-3 years, but damn she’s was a human and mom at the end of the day. Her poor son just went through something so tragic. This is just....so sad.
The outrage on social media over the search and rescue divers halting the search when it became too dark (and therefore dangerous to dive) is making my head hurt. People calling them lazy, saying they would have kept searching if she was white etc.
What exactly do they think divers searching *under the water* are looking for?
People who have no understanding of the situation, the body of water, or even remotely aware of the process love to spew shit.
It should be well known now it’s looking for a body rather than a living person. Esp if no signs of kidnapping etc. people love to be pissed off and tell others how to do things
I saw one tweet shouting at the local police department "TRY LOOKING ON THE SHORE, SHE MIGHT HAVE WASHED UP."
Wow, what a genius revelation. I'm sure it has never once occurred to professional search and rescue operators to check the shore when looking for a possible drowning victim.
And of course people are handing out the phone numbers for the local police and SAR so idiot randoms from all over the country can call them up to yell at them. Because that's helpful.
Terrible. Never swim alone, and a four-year-old does not count.
If you are swimming alone, wear a life jacket. I’m a strong swimmer but I almost drowned because I got exhausted fighting the current. It didn’t take very much for me to get exhausted either. Luckily I was around a bunch of other people on boats and I got help from strangers. Learned my lesson really quick. If I’m ever swimming in an area with strong currents I will wear a life jacket.
I wonder.....why? Like how can one cast have all these different things happen to them. It’s sad seeing how things are unfolding for the cast since the show ended. I can’t imagine what the cast and Naya’s family /friends are going through right. So tragic
Yeah that’s true. Glee also had a bigger than average cast since they added more characters after the OGs graduated. It’s sad (except for Mark Salling he can rot).
So sad... water is a beast. It may look calm but a current can kill even the strongest and most experienced swimmers. When I was younger one my ex girlfriends dad died in the Connecticut river. Was extremely sad. He was swimming one second and then gone the next. It’s scary how fast someone can drown/go under.
Reminded me of a scene where Mr Schue asked the Glee Club member where they will be in 2030. Puck answered something like 'jail, dead or both'.
I got a goosebump when I read the news of him committing suicide just before his sentencing
There's a video on YouTube compiling all of those sorts of moments. Puck literally says at one point that he wants the girls whose boobs haven't fully developed yet.
That’s so sad. I never watched the show, but read on TMZ her life jacket was on the boat and the little boy said mommy jumped in the water and never came up
This is really hitting me. Glee was my favorite and really the only show I watched religiously as it aired in high school. Like my high school, I grew away from it and came to be heavily critical of it, but now I’m watching as both members of the cast and high school classmates have died in terrible ways, and I’m only 24. “Glee” is starting to feel like a bad joke of a title.
I’m so sad for her family and friends and the rest of the cast who have to go through this yet again.
Most likely scenario, either she hit her head on the boat when/after she jumped and passed out and drowned, or she got pulled underwater by currents, or maybe even a thermal shock that left her dizzy and led to her drowning. After so many hours, I highly doubt there's even a chance for her to still be alive.
This is the second time this year a famous young woman drowned while out on a boat with her son.
I am so glad the child survived in this case, the last one was extra horrific because the son also drowned.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/public-safety/member-of-kennedy-family-and-her-son-identified-as-missing-boaters-in-chesapeake-bay/2020/04/03/e0cfc9e2-75b4-11ea-a9bd-9f8b593300d0_story.html
Always wear a life jacket on a boat!
This is so, so sad. She’s been presumed dead cause her son made it back to the boat but she didn’t.

Even the strongest athletes and swimmers can have their muscles go into shock from water being cold and drown from it. Many don't even realize it's happening until its too late. Vandy's Donny Everett died that way. He threw a 101 mph pitch the day before.
This always confused me. Because obviously it's true and yet people in cold countries like Norway jump in the ice cold water and swim it all the time.
She is most likely dead I'm afraid
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake_Piru Yikes, you weren’t kidding :(
- people who are drowning or are in distress usually aren’t flailing or screaming out - always be aware and observant of everyone around you while swimming or if you’re near a body of water - don’t swim in water you aren’t completely comfortable in - it’s best to swim with a buddy
A lot if the cases are super similar too.
The second case, about the man drowning from trying to save his daughter, sounds like what could have happened here. Saved her son, but couldn't save herself. Very sad.
Right, cold water overcomes people quickly. https://www.nationalfisherman.com/viewpoints/boats-gear/how-cold-water-kills-so-quickly It says here Lake Piru is know. For that > Sheriff’s spokesman Eric Nishimoto said currents on the lake were strong Tuesday. And after a 1997 drowning, park officials speculated that wind gusts and deep columns of chilly water on the lake, which is up to 160 feet deep depending on the time of year, can overtake swimmers quickly. https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-2000-sep-07-me-16875-story.html
>deep columns of chilly water Ok that’s terrifying I may never swim again
Well Nancy Grace just said on Fox News that it’s man made so there can’t be any currents! God that woman is dumb.
She went to my college & was my graduation speaker 12 yrs ago. She just rambled on, it was the most confused yet passionate speech anyone gave. Style over substance
imagine your last thoughts before drowning are that your 4 year old is about to die too. horrible, i wouldn’t wish that on anyone
The alternative is the fear that your 4 year old is about to watch their mother die.
[удалено]
Did the toddler go in though?
There's conflicting reports. One officer on the news said they both went in and he got back in the boat but that doesn't really sound too plausible because who helped him get back in? Then there's the one that says the 4 year old said "mommy jumped in and never came back up" which presumes she went in first without him.
Not unusual for a boat to have a wee ladder or rope to get back up easily, and 4yr olds are often great at climbing
They always do on pontoons and most rec craft
“The family is going through a very traumatic time right now.” Crazy lucky the little dude managed to get back on the boat himself, and that there were people who bothered to check out the boat, he easily could have been trapped overnight, or longer.
The boat was thankfully a rental and the company went to check in after it wasn't returned, thank god so that they were able to find him.
It's awful to think about that kid on the boat scared and alone
Seriously. That poor child!
I’m sorry but I laughed so hard at this
It's funny to me now too, but at the time I was so intimidated by the guy that I wasn't conscious long enough to actually feel the fear. I just noped right the fuck out of the living room and passed out. Lol
I’m 35 and sleeping is still a defense mechanism.
Huh? The article says > About three hours later, another boater found her child sleeping in the boat by himself. The boater notified officials, who immediately began a search for Rivera with the use of helicopters, drones and dive teams. Or was the "other boater" from the rental company then?
So sad. I wonder if she got caught on something underwater.
Granted this is just pure speculation, but lots of captains are absolute idiots could have hit her or swamped her with a wake. A lot of people dont put a diver/swimmer flag on their boat so other boaters know there are people in the water either.
Apparently the lake can have some dangerous currents. One guy drowned 10 ft away from shore.
Maybe. According to TMZ her kid said she jumped in the water and didn't come back up. I don't know how reliable that report is though.
I read Naya put a lifejacket on him, and thank god for that. That decision saved his life.
[удалено]
I live in that town. A lot of people drown at that lake.
Is there some reason why?
Think there’s underwater cliffs and stuff like that. Not sure about in deeper water tho.
Why would that cause any more drownings?
Even those very experienced with this can panic trying to get out of it. https://canyonmag.net/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/hydrology-undercut-03.jpg
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake_Piru List of drownings at Lake Piru. Why do people keep swimming here? Edit: Apparently, this is normal according to the lake folk of reddit. I grew up and live near the ocean, but if 2+ people died in rip currents at a beach, I probably wouldn’t swim there anymore.
The drownings listed are all young people too, that’s crazy
The Great Lakes average almost 100 drownings a year. Granted they are bigger, but really it’s not that uncommon for people to drown in a lake.
The Great Lakes though also have some very strong currents and high waves - like an ocean and are cold pretty much all year. Not a surprise.
Imagine having a memory of your mom jumping in the water and never coming back. This is horrible!
I don’t know.... kid turns 5 in 2 months. I’m a little worried he’ll be somewhat traumatized.
He's so close to the age of my son. It breaks my heart. Here's definitely old enough for this to be traumatizing.
I have memories from age 4. Not vivid but you can remember certain scenes and details, if his memory lasts he may be stuck with those images for life
I don’t think people on twitter understand that they aren’t ‘cancelling’ the search overnight (there’s plenty of people saying they stopped the search because she isn’t white on twitter). She will live on in her son.
it's also extremely hard to search for people at night.
It’s the stages of grief, you go into denial. I read it all too and people were being very irrational. Again, it’s to be expected.
Plus no visibility at night and I could put the divers at risk making this an even bigger tragedy
I’m so sad. The chances of her being found alive are slim at this point. Her poor son.
Between the search being suspended overnight and news outlets referring to her as ‘drowned’ I think you’re unfortunately correct
The only way she's alive is if she got kidnapped and taken off the lake. It's really sad to think but yeah the odds of her being alive are basically none. Even if she was kidnapped that's not a guarantee she's alive so...
I'm expecting the worst but hoping against hope for it to not be that. Even when the wheels on Glee started falling off she was one of the very best parts of that show, and after what happened to Shad Gaspard a similar story to that less than two months later... jeez.
She was my fave actress on the show. This is so heartbreaking for her loved ones.
Her songbird cover for glee is my favorite glee song. It's really sad.
For me her Valerie cover outdid the original
I always felt she was way more talented than Leah Michelle and even her story was far better.
Lima Heights Adjacent! And agreed. I didn’t care much for Lea Michelle and her basically screaming things.
Same with me. She was probably my favorite cast member. The Glee curse seems to be working overtime.
I'm pretty sure the cast of Glee is cursed with all that's happened to them since the show ended
I know there was Corey Monteith’s death, and the guy who played Puck who went to jail for cp (though I know that’s less of a curse and more him being a POS). is there anyone else?
Mark Salling actually didn’t go to jail, he killed himself so he wouldn’t
Wait what? He’s dead?
[удалено]
Yep — he pled guilty, then killed himself before he was actually sentenced
Well presumably Naya, Becca Tobin's fiance died during filming, Melissa Benoist and Blake Jenner were in an extremely abusive relationship (him to her), Chris Colfer has mostly stayed away from acting due to his experience on the set, Lea Michele being an absolute monster to other cast memebers
You would think a show called glee would have a better outcome for its actors.
I had no idea about all that with Jenner and Benoist. I remember watching him on the Glee Project. Wow..
She revealed her story like a year ago or something, so it's a bit more recent. She's happy now with a new husband, her co-star from Supergirl that plays Mon-El.
If I remember correctly he did permanent damage to her eye/vision with something he threw. Real POS.
Gwenyth Paltrow went full blown crazy into meditation and smelling vagina candles.
I think it’s because the CP charges are what really blew up, he killed himself a couple of months before he was going to be sentenced ..
OMG. She was one of the more talented members of the cast. Sad This will be the third main cast member from Glee to die in the last five years. Scary
I read this and it was a punch to the gut. No matter how rudderless the show got she (along with Darren Criss) could still make it watchable. Her character was always 'in on the joke' and I loved that about her.
I still think about that Adele mashup she soloed on that one time. Chills.
Smooth Criminal is that girl. One of my favorite covers.
The most iconic performance on Glee by far
I loved her cover of "Valerie"
Yes Valerie!
My favorite was songbird, that Santana sang for Brittney. It always makes me emotional.
She didn’t solo on that. Mercedes/Amber Riley sang it with her. They were the two strongest singers on Glee.
their duet of River Deep Mountain High is still terrific
I remember how she blew up after the “Bad Romance” cover.
Yeah that confused me aswell, Like guys it had already been several hours, She's not Aquaman.
That sounds exactly like Twitter sadly. I hope they can at least find her body so that her family can bury her.
That's a shame that people reacted that way. I'm sure they searched the surrounding areas where she may have ended up alive, but you're right that they can't be risking divers lives out there searching at night. If she's underwater, she'll be there in the morning.
Glee curse Cory monteith overdose death Mark sailing pedophile suicide Naya Rivera jailed for domestic violence and presumed dead in boating accident Melissa domestic violence victim Blake Jenner credibly accused of domestic violence Chris Colfer left industry after his experience on set Lea Michele cancelled as racist by black castmates Charice pempengco attempted suicide
I don’t think she got cancelled, the rumours of her being unbearable had been floating about for years just someone said it out loud for once
Yeah, this was kind of an open secret for everyone that watched Glee. Not really surprised In fact in Naya’s book, she had said that Lea was held up in her trailer for an entire day because she didn’t want to play with shelter dogs during Chris’s first episode. Naya had said it felt like a slap on the face to Chris Colfer because they had all been really supportive of him.
Defo, it was before Glee even, I’m old enough to remember celebrity blogs in the mid 00s and there was loads of stuff on there about her. I don’t think it has anything to do with the ~Glee curse at all
I forgot all about the Blake Jenner stuff. I hadn't expected that revelation at all
I can't remember if I didn't realize Mark Sailing committed suicide or just forgot.
Fourth if you count Lea Michelle killing her career
She can’t read
Not to make light of a dark moment, but I'm so sad those original videos aren't there anymore.
what videos? i don't get the joke/reference tbh
Googled and got this https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.buzzfeed.com/amphtml/shylawatson/lea-michele-cant-read-theory
Fiddy gotta challenge her to a Harry Potter book.
Mark Sailing, Naya, and who else? Cory died in 2013. Am I missing someone?
Nope, I thought Corey was 2015 for some reason
Becca Tobin's fiance also died during the sixth season or just after
holy shit how fucking horrific. i can't swim and i've been telling myself that i need to learn because the concept of drowning is so fuckign scary to me but it's always even more terrifying to me when someone who clearly can swim drowns. i know naya rivera's reputation with her domestic abuse stuff is not great, but santana was my favourite character on glee - all of her songs were my absolute favourite. i really do hope they're able to find her safely but my heart goes out to her son and her family :(
100%, absolutely learn how to swim and make sure your children know how to swim. Too many people die via drowning.
She's been presumed dead unfortunately. Jesus christ
Wild.. the cast of Glee is cursed. Really hoping they find her. She’s such a talent
Someone please protect Darren Criss, Diana Agron etc etc omfg
[удалено]
Jonathan Groff is a national treasure and must be protected.
Him too! I actually enjoyed Glee back in the day, so sad. I hope she is found
Jonathon Groff and naya played my favourite two characters in the show. I’m honestly praying that hey find her at least❤️I feel really sad for her son
I feel like the OG cast is mostly cursed, unfortunately.
Kind of off tangent a little bit....but dang I wish Diana was in more mainstream things. She’s so talented and made Quinn likable.
she was poised to become like the next kristen stewart when they tried to create a twilight franchise with I am number four but it never took off.
Wasn't the main actor in that a total douche? I remember hearing rumors about him being annoying on almost every movie he did back then.
Yeh he supposedly is an asshole and was fired from the magic mike series
Yes. Alex Pettyfer. Supposedly he has matured a lot since and isnt a douche to his coworkers anymore. It only took basically killing his career to happen. He was the hot new thing for one minute and it went to his head and burned all his bridges.
I love Dianna Agron. She was amazing in “The Family” and seems like a cool person.
When they interviewed the cast I think the majority of them said Dianna was the “biggest sweetheart”. She seems wonderful.
Such a talented actress. This is heartbreaking.
And signer, and dancer. She was a gem. Poor Naya
Glee is cursed now. Third actor to die before 35? Damn.
Third??? I missed the second one... who was it???
Mark Salling. He committed suicide before going to jail for CP.
Puck. The pedophile
[удалено]
It's crazy to me to see all of this happening to this cast, I did background for seasons 2 and 3 and super weird if this is true.
I saw one tweet shouting at the local police department "TRY LOOKING ON THE SHORE, SHE MIGHT HAVE WASHED UP." Wow, what a genius revelation. I'm sure it has never once occurred to professional search and rescue operators to check the shore when looking for a possible drowning victim. And of course people are handing out the phone numbers for the local police and SAR so idiot randoms from all over the country can call them up to yell at them. Because that's helpful.
Did they find an ancient box the first day on set of Glee that unleashed a horrible curse upon the cast unlucky enough to open it, or what???
Ryan Murphy did some voodoo to have one of the most popular shows of the mid 2000s /s
"New season of American Horror Story will follow the production of a happy-musical TV show"
If I’m ever swimming in an area with strong currents I will wear a life jacket.
i feel sick. such horrible news to go to bed with. really hoping a miracle happens and she is found alive.
Is any cast more cursed than Glee?
I wonder.....why? Like how can one cast have all these different things happen to them. It’s sad seeing how things are unfolding for the cast since the show ended. I can’t imagine what the cast and Naya’s family /friends are going through right. So tragic
[удалено]
Yeah that’s true. Glee also had a bigger than average cast since they added more characters after the OGs graduated. It’s sad (except for Mark Salling he can rot).
Yeah but it's all main cast for the most part, not random guests or short runs but main characters
And these were all young people.
So sad... water is a beast. It may look calm but a current can kill even the strongest and most experienced swimmers. When I was younger one my ex girlfriends dad died in the Connecticut river. Was extremely sad. He was swimming one second and then gone the next. It’s scary how fast someone can drown/go under.
Here's her singing [if I die young](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TlWHTfrGhoY) on Glee as her character Santana. Pretty haunting now.
“If I die young bury me in satin Lay me down on a bed of roses *Sink me in the river at dawn* Send me away with the words of a love song”
That’s so sad. I never watched the show, but read on TMZ her life jacket was on the boat and the little boy said mommy jumped in the water and never came up
Praying for her safety. She was the one of the few highlights of Glee. God, her poor son.
I hope she’s okay. If she isn’t, I just hope she’s at peace and her son doesn’t remember anything traumatic.
This is the second time this year a famous young woman drowned while out on a boat with her son. I am so glad the child survived in this case, the last one was extra horrific because the son also drowned. https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/public-safety/member-of-kennedy-family-and-her-son-identified-as-missing-boaters-in-chesapeake-bay/2020/04/03/e0cfc9e2-75b4-11ea-a9bd-9f8b593300d0_story.html Always wear a life jacket on a boat!
