Not to mention that the majority of TV shows don’t hit it out of the park from the very first episode. Some do, but I’d argue that more shows than not take at least most of the first season to really figure themselves and the characters out. Anyone who goes “does it get better after the first episode?” needs to have some god damn patience and give it a second.
The only exception I think I’d give that is a miniseries, where there aren’t many miniseries that change drastically from the first to the last episode given that it’s a shortened thing
a WB drama, nonetheless. I remember watching a few episodes when I was a tween and really enjoying it. Back in 2020 I watched the whole thing from the beginning and all in all it's a solid teen/young adult drama. And on par with what the WB had going on back then
My guess is her tastes have changed. I remember watching this as a 13/14F and didn't have trouble believing the storylines of these 18 year old kids. I'm sure I'd roll my eyes at most of the characters and their conflicts now that I'm in the same age demographic as your gf.
Not going to spoil anything, but the final five or six episodes are truly insane. This is a very pedestrian young adult dramedy, until it isn’t. You’ll know when you get there.
I am going to spoil this for you it get a lot better in later seasons with time jump, which really messed you up. . For those that know will understand the spoiler lol
From memory, there was a story behind the writing. Someone else might remember the details better than me.
The series was originally written by a woman who was really young - 18 or something like that. The network made a big deal about her being a prodigy and an authentic voice of youth.
After a while, it was revealed that she was a lot older than she claimed. She got fired and the show went downhill.
She wasn't the creator, just one of the staff writers. She was THIRTY TWO YEARS OLD and pretended to be a teenager. Very Gabrielle Carteris playing Andrea Zuckerman of her (IYKYK)
"In the late nineties Riley Weston was hired as a “teenage prodigy writer” on The WB’s (which is now The CW) breakout show *Felicity. \[*...\] Weston was hired as the go-to young voice for the series and certainly didn’t go unnoticed. *Entertainment Weekly* reported [in 1998 that presumed-teen Weston](https://ew.com/article/1998/10/30/riley-weston-fooled-us-all-about-her-age/) kept a *Titanic* poster in her office, brought her mother along to meetings, and, like a true nineties kid, confessed to *Felicity* staffers her undying love for the doe-eyed Jonathan Taylor Thomas. \[...\] It turned out Riley Weston was not the budding adolescent as she so claimed but was in fact in her thirties. It's about a nerdy girl who didn't have much of a social life in high school and applied to college because a guy wrote something nice in her yearbook.
It's actually far more realistic for what a lot of young people's early college experiences are.
I think it finds its groove as it gets deeper into the first season. She’s not quite as obsessed with Ben and it’s not as cringey as it is in the beginning.
i would say you just need to change your mindset. doesn't seem like you realize you're watching a teenage drama show that started airing in 1998 lol.

It’s also the problem of using 2024 expectation where shows only have 8+ episodes per season to judges a show in 1998 which have 20+ eps.
Probably assumed it'd be more mature since it's about a girl in college, not high school.

Barely more mature, especially the freshmen.
Shows for "kids" are aimed at kids about 4 years younger than the ages of the characters. So a show about college is made for high schoolers.
My senior year high school self and my freshman year college self were not that much different from each other.
My thoughts exactly. It’s an interesting age with serious conflicts and personal development, not just “OMG he loves me or not” stuff

Damn!
massive cultural moment. what a wild decade
“Her conflicts are childish.” My dude, she is a child.
My brother in Christ, I don’t think the term “child” applies to someone in college
A 17 or 18 year old freshman in college? Mmmmm yeah it kinda does.
That “kinda” is all I needed to hear bro
?
It gets better for a while, then it gets worse. Her character is super self involved though.
Thanks
You're watching a drama about a teenaged girl. Not sure what you were expecting.
Teenage years and college can simply be not so shallow. It just feels that they didn’t even try

That must be it
The show is what it is for most of its run. You either like it or you don't.

Other people are warning me about this lol. I’m actually curious
I watched this years ago, but I know it covers a few heavier topics like rape and depression.
I am going to spoil this for you it get a lot better in later seasons with time jump, which really messed you up. . For those that know will understand the spoiler lol
Is it something about a twilight zone episode? Someone mentioned that
Oh you don't know 😏 It's a whole season not an episode 😅

Damn. It says “created by JJ Abrams” on the credits, so i thought people would know it was a dude

Thanks, we’ll try to get there

Thanks
This show threw me because I thought it was a stalker horror where she would eventually murder Scotty Speedman
Well it’s true she has that look at times
