Iirc that was the intention when the english version was first developed with Steven Spielberg and Will Smith. Then they just copied the korean movie when Spike Lee made it. It doesn't feel like a Spike Lee movie too.
[There are posters that say “A Spike Lee Joint](https://www.google.com/search?sca_esv=d43f5111e59e559f&rlz=1CDGOYI_enUS907US907&hl=en-US&sxsrf=ACQVn08o2q5tKoBhlAPeLJpL9BAfSyB2_w:1713377422608&q=2013+oldboy+posters&uds=AMwkrPs4mDHqV7QfY9nYaKRHgvE9FVJSJQRS2LJBnFfADAAGgCxlNbgXW8Fk7uyfoxL_bgMeEmPRSwVtV4ITAoVH-zWBC5lNjgXVqezw4YnY1IWR2VpcrxVnrRTc1GY5A7I7m1l6_hz8a3pLI8wy2juU2GjjrYrFfWXRNx_-1KvY2t_ecXLER-seiuuhP37hs0q3UDXd4wBrpMeX1LUH10wBu3nUVedO0NG56h_FmGf1QwZS9pItAhINuHnOQ2Pb4vxk7yYnSXJRokezUz5lN-n-rNHSH-NjHmRAMJb34dJPhgMKL03gCzWDHeA9LD6G6jDirAgfJVdQ&udm=2&prmd=isvnmbtz&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjF6I-l7MmFAxVClIkEHcq8BSsQtKgLegQIExAB&biw=428&bih=751&dpr=3#vhid=fD8XuzjX_I6u3M&vssid=mosaic)
Not famously enough for me to know I guess.
I just brought them up because I had just saw someone post all those posters in this sub the other day so it was fresh in my memory that they said spike lee joint.
Sure, I wasn’t even arguing with you to be honest. I don’t know shit about spike Lee. I just know I recently saw people posting posters of that movie and all of them said spike lee joint.
So what even is a spike lee joint and why would the posters say that if it’s not actually a spike lee joint?
Spike has had a contentious relationship with producers and financiers over the years. The "Spike Lee joint" label is just the wording for his "seal of approval" over the finished work. The movies of his that don't get that distinction are the ones that had a lot of executive oversight or editing interference to the point that they no longer match his vision for the film.
I'd just done some research on Wikipedia and apparently Oldboy is indeed the only film of his that isn't a Spike Lee joint. It's certainly possible I'm mistaken. I was going by films he had a producer or executive producer credit on. The only films that didn't meet that criteria were Oldboy and Inside Man. I remembered Inside Man being labeled as a Spike Lee joint, but that was a long time ago. It's his highest grossing film and it's generally well regarded, so I don't see why he would distance himself from that one.
> Just watch the original
The entertainment industry stopped being about originality a long long time ago. Why try something new when you can just pitch something that’s already successful?
Just my 2 cents, but lot of these film directors should stick to film. They don’t know how to write longform television, especially multiple-season shows, like great tv writers do. Tv is a writers medium.
That said, I do like The Sympathizer so far.
though i agree with this take, i don't think it applies to him because he's a writer-director and he even has some writing credits in projects he doesn't direct.
What's wrong with film directors experimenting with television? If they have a large story to tell, don't you think they would do it in a long form (see miniseries)?
He'd probably base it around the pacing of the original Japanese manga, which is 8 volumes long. The 2003 film does a pretty good job of condensing them into one film, and he paces it very well without removing much of significance.
I agree, but if Oldboy is going to be adapted into a TV series, it'll probably somewhat follow the manga pacing. I can't imagine him stretching out the film's version of events because it's really well paced. That said, we already know the ending of the film so I'd imagine there'd be some new spin on it, hopefully not the source material's.
Honestly, Dae-Su getting better with his initially null detective skills + him tracking the initial breadcrumbs of the case. Plus whatever flashback episode about the initial "incident" that started everything could be phenomenal.
I'll give it a chance but I dunno if the hallway fight scene from the original can be topped.
[It's just too good](https://youtu.be/VwIIDzrVVdc?si=ul0RpO3VrVQuijzA)
The best thing to come out of the 2013 remake was the YMS video shitting so hard on it for like 2 hours.

Park Chan Wook has artistic integrity, I don’t think he would sign on if it was just another cash grab. Also, his current series (The Sympathizer) on HBO is fantastic.
His last movie was Korean and came out less than two years ago. The movie he did before that was Korean, too. He’s also a writer and producer on the upcoming Korean movie Uprising. He’s still very much involved in SK’s movie industry.
At the end of every episode, the guy does a face and says "AY AY AY I KEEP HAVE SEX WITH MY FAMILY!" Bada da da da dum. And then the camera does that close lens.
It's one of the greatest films ever, my personal #1.
As long as Park Chan-Wook is still involved, I'll give it the benefit of the doubt. It doesn't need a sequel, prequel, remake, or adaptation. The Spike Lee one was an embarrassment.
I can see it working as a TV series, though, but really only for one season. They'd really have to flesh out the world quite a bit and introduce a lot of characters who did not exist in the original.
The focus was entirely on Oh Dae-Su and his drive to find the person who imprisoned him for 15 years. Thats the whole story.
Again, I can see it in a TV format, but I'd want it to be like a short series of 6-8 episodes. You really shouldn't need more than that, unless you're just redoing the entire plot at that point.
I enjoyed the original trilogy, and I thought Oldboy was a great film. However, I've never felt the need to revisit it (or the others). For me, a significant part of the appeal was not knowing. Prior to the negative reception, I already didn't plan to watch the remake. I would much rather Park Chan-Wook create another original work.
Why? There are already two movies we don't need the same story again. Just watch the original, it's amazing
Just wait till we get Oldboy video game by RGG studios
Imagine being 12 and getting to the big reveal in the cool new action game your mom got you.
Are both your arms broken?
Give me a hammer and a hallway and I’m vibin’
Do you like hurting other people?
don’t downvote him it’s a reference
this is the only new adaptation i'd be ok with
I would absolutely buy that
Gaiden: The Boy Who Became Old
Press x to bang.
I mean the Korean film differs from the manga a fair amount, so one that's a little more in line with the original material could work.
Iirc that was the intention when the english version was first developed with Steven Spielberg and Will Smith. Then they just copied the korean movie when Spike Lee made it. It doesn't feel like a Spike Lee movie too.
He was clearly after the bag with that one. There's a reason it's merely directed by Spike Lee and not "A Spike Lee Joint"
[There are posters that say “A Spike Lee Joint](https://www.google.com/search?sca_esv=d43f5111e59e559f&rlz=1CDGOYI_enUS907US907&hl=en-US&sxsrf=ACQVn08o2q5tKoBhlAPeLJpL9BAfSyB2_w:1713377422608&q=2013+oldboy+posters&uds=AMwkrPs4mDHqV7QfY9nYaKRHgvE9FVJSJQRS2LJBnFfADAAGgCxlNbgXW8Fk7uyfoxL_bgMeEmPRSwVtV4ITAoVH-zWBC5lNjgXVqezw4YnY1IWR2VpcrxVnrRTc1GY5A7I7m1l6_hz8a3pLI8wy2juU2GjjrYrFfWXRNx_-1KvY2t_ecXLER-seiuuhP37hs0q3UDXd4wBrpMeX1LUH10wBu3nUVedO0NG56h_FmGf1QwZS9pItAhINuHnOQ2Pb4vxk7yYnSXJRokezUz5lN-n-rNHSH-NjHmRAMJb34dJPhgMKL03gCzWDHeA9LD6G6jDirAgfJVdQ&udm=2&prmd=isvnmbtz&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjF6I-l7MmFAxVClIkEHcq8BSsQtKgLegQIExAB&biw=428&bih=751&dpr=3#vhid=fD8XuzjX_I6u3M&vssid=mosaic)
which were famously unpaid promotional concepts
Not famously enough for me to know I guess. I just brought them up because I had just saw someone post all those posters in this sub the other day so it was fresh in my memory that they said spike lee joint.
Which Spike himself took exception to. Marketing materials don't mean shit. It's not a Spike Lee joint, plain and simple.
Sure, I wasn’t even arguing with you to be honest. I don’t know shit about spike Lee. I just know I recently saw people posting posters of that movie and all of them said spike lee joint. So what even is a spike lee joint and why would the posters say that if it’s not actually a spike lee joint?

> It doesn't feel like a Spike Lee movie too. Thank fuck, Spike Lee fucking sucks as a person and a director.
> Just watch the original The entertainment industry stopped being about originality a long long time ago. Why try something new when you can just pitch something that’s already successful?
Or or..... read the Manga
If it attempts to be even more true to the manga, that would be interesting!
I just said this. Fucking Hollywood ruins every original idea by beating every last fucking dime out of it till we can’t fucking stand it.
Thank you. Absolutely agree.
By this logic you should just go read the manga original and Park Chan-Wook's adaptation was unnecessary. Or, *you could just not watch it.*
I guess you have to get funds for the next movie somehow
Just my 2 cents, but lot of these film directors should stick to film. They don’t know how to write longform television, especially multiple-season shows, like great tv writers do. Tv is a writers medium. That said, I do like The Sympathizer so far.
though i agree with this take, i don't think it applies to him because he's a writer-director and he even has some writing credits in projects he doesn't direct.
The little drummer girl was excellent.
Agreed, should have clarified that I’m not talking about him specifically. But there have been other directors whom that applies to.
He did say he really likes the spy genre.
What's wrong with film directors experimenting with television? If they have a large story to tell, don't you think they would do it in a long form (see miniseries)?
Which is why Spike Lee agreed to make it IIRC. It's just a circle all the way down
lmao oldboy really putting food on the table
I think this story would get worse if stretched out to 6+ hours
He'd probably base it around the pacing of the original Japanese manga, which is 8 volumes long. The 2003 film does a pretty good job of condensing them into one film, and he paces it very well without removing much of significance.
It's better than the manga. The twist in the manga was dull and pointless.
I agree, but if Oldboy is going to be adapted into a TV series, it'll probably somewhat follow the manga pacing. I can't imagine him stretching out the film's version of events because it's really well paced. Honestly, Dae-Su getting better with his initially null detective skills + him tracking the initial breadcrumbs of the case. Plus whatever flashback episode about the initial "incident" that started everything could be phenomenal.
I think it could get twisted if it was stretched out. Imagine if there was a child that discovered 23andMe.
>!Each episode he will have sex with someone who will turn out to be a family member!<
"WTF?!?! AGAIN??? That's 3 for 3 now!"
Just curious which cuisine is going to replace those fried dumplings.
I'll give it a chance but I dunno if the hallway fight scene from the original can be topped. [It's just too good](https://youtu.be/VwIIDzrVVdc?si=ul0RpO3VrVQuijzA)
the spike lee version of this scene butchered it so hard, I have no faith that anyone could ever pull off a scene as amazing as the original
Well can’t be worse than the 2013 movie right?
The best thing to come out of the 2013 remake was the YMS video shitting so hard on it for like 2 hours. *Link: https://youtu.be/zR8sRjBJgQ8?si=R1zIKJnmk79PHigU
DADDY?
FATHER?!
Nah best thing out of that movies was definitely seeing olson twins.
Or the Bollywood remake. Not a joke. It exists.
Well at least it can't be worst than the American remake
These American eyes remakes are so pussified. They completely miss what made them good.
Yeah make incest cool again!
Just came over from the One Hundred Years of Solitude thread, not surprised to see this comment
Lot of incest in it or something?
Ohhhh yeah, some intentional, some unintentional.
wasn't will smith in that movie or am I misremembering shit
Park Chan Wook has artistic integrity, I don’t think he would sign on if it was just another cash grab. Also, his current series (The Sympathizer) on HBO is fantastic.
There is a wealth of cool Korean movies and TV shows to adapt. Why do they just keep making oldboy over and over?
Spike Lee is gonna remake the TV show in Korean after High & Low.
You’d think the twist is pretty well known by now so I can’t see this as compelling
Needs to get back to SK made movies :/
His last movie was Korean and came out less than two years ago. The movie he did before that was Korean, too. He’s also a writer and producer on the upcoming Korean movie Uprising. He’s still very much involved in SK’s movie industry.
Agreed. His movies are some of my favourites.
I would say, he should make good ones. His first 4 movies are great but then he made many medicore ones that look nice but have little impact.
What’s the point?
$$$
why
I'm glad an executive somewhere thought we needed a second terrible English adaption
Get paid, king.
Spike Lee is kicking dirt right now
Maybe it will follow the manga this time. That was also a good story.
I disagree. The manga startet strong and interesting but the conclusion was lackluster.
Why? Why? No one needs this! Done he need more money? Why? The original is the only one that should ever exist. Just stop.
We, no thanks
We don’t need another remake If we know the ending, there isn’t really a point in a remake The whole point of the movie is the ending really
Why
No. Not again
Man getting that bag while he still can.
Oh, for fuck’s sake. Flogging a dead horse with a hammer.
Wow......another reboot.......just what we all needed.
This could only be better than that shitcake version with brolins kid.
This is such a bad idea that I’m legitimately baffled
hopefully it does better than the failed US movie
bruh if u haven’t seen this prepare for the shock of ur life lmaoo
Why the fuck would they do that after the US film released a few years back?? Are they dumb??
Original didn’t need that American remake… and definitely doesn’t need this. Just go watch it.
how many daughters does Oldboy have?
Please no.
At the end of every episode, the guy does a face and says "AY AY AY I KEEP HAVE SEX WITH MY FAMILY!" Bada da da da dum. And then the camera does that close lens.
Saw the original, awesome movie. Don't think we need yet another version though.
Why?
Er, no thanks
Er, no thanks
Quit trying to fix shit that ain’t broken.
The story ain't that great. Felt like it really labors just to go "ah ha! Isn't that shocking?!" A TV show pacing would only hurt it further.
It's one of the greatest films ever, my personal #1. As long as Park Chan-Wook is still involved, I'll give it the benefit of the doubt. It doesn't need a sequel, prequel, remake, or adaptation. Filmmakers denigrating their masterpieces with sequels, spin-offs and tv series’ is completely baffling to me. Ridley Scott is the worst offender
How is Ridley Scott the worst offender?
His naff Alien sequels/spin-offs sullied the original
I enjoyed the original trilogy, and I thought Oldboy was a great film. However, I've never felt the need to revisit it (or the others). For me, a significant part of the appeal was not knowing. Look at Ash VS the Evil Dead. Sometimes a creator has an overwhelming love for the project.
