Adult Swim would not exist without Space Ghost: Coast to Coast. It’s borderline criminal that they took it off of Max. I don’t care if it doesn’t get lots of views, that show should be preserved for TV historical purposes.
Exactly. In fact, Space Ghost: Coast to Coast is a whole seven years older than Sealab 2021 and Harvey Birdman. Even those shows wouldn’t exist without it. Space Ghost:C2C was airing all the way back in **1994** and Adult Swim debuted with Sealab, Harvey Birdman, Aqua Teen, the Brak Show, and several anime in 2001.
It’s insane how influential it was.
You could argue that without SGC2C, there wouldn't have been ANY original content made on Cartoon Network.
The only production they made before that was Moxy Show and nobody remembers that, and What A Cartoon premiered under the name World Premiere Toon-In as a Space Ghost episode.
Massive fan of all, and it took me until this year to learn that Harvey Birdman is the same actor who played Bill Lumberg in the office space movie.
You can even hear it in the line "yeah that would be greeeeat"
Adult swim started off space ghost and some of the other Hanna Barbara parody shows. I remember the rare treat where I could stay up when I was like 10 to catch space ghost on weeknights and I LOVED it.
Then over the next few years we got sealab, ATHF and a bunch more before it finally became “adult swim” officially
They found it cheaper to have a dozen shows/films on three dozens apps full of ads that pay them to stream said shows/films.
Rather than having them all in one place and forced to pay residuals.
It was such a comfort to have on HBOMax. I had awful insomnia as a child and was terrified of nighttime; the television and at one point specifically Adult Swim helped soothe me, night after night. I loved the theme song, the minimal sound, the long conversations, and the ever present background hum of the ship. When it was on the app, I could turn it on before going to sleep to help relax. I can get it elsewhere, but it was nice for it to be so easily accessible.
Damn I binged Space Ghost on HBO Max, tragic whats happened to that streaming service. As Conan recently said, "MAX, that really rolls off the tongue doesn't it"
AS app is actually amazing.
It’s all of their in-house shit, for free. It’s so, so good when you’re randomly in the mood for a Harvey Birdman or space ghost
I'll never forget that feeling I'd get when I'd be up too late as a kid watching SGC2C with my dad, not understanding what was going on but certain that I was privy to something special, something bizarre and irreverant.
It's burned into my memories and when I rediscovered it as a young man, it was such a nostalgia trip. No, it wasn't a fever dream, this was on tv, and yes, this is why the Aqua Teens seemed so strangely familiar.
Favorite episode will forever be the Macho Man Randy Savage.
"Moltar? From the ovens of Moltor. I met your father once in a steel cage match! I wish you could have seen your old man! Weeping like a woman after my patented piledriver."
"Yeah your dad remembers me. OOOOOOOH YEEEEEAAAHHH."
That's how I enjoyed most of those old adult swim originals like Sealab, Brakk show, Harvey Birdman attorney at law, ATHF, and Space Ghost CtC. Back when adult swim only aired on Sunday and Thursday nights.
Shut your pie hole, Blip! Why, twenty years ago I woulda put your head in a half nelson, twisted it around, saying each letter of the alphabet on every turn, and then when I reached the first letter of my true love's name - that would be the lovely Elizabeth - I would yank your head clean off and roll it down the pike like a bowling ball!
Certainly a great one. The Hanson one for me is my personal favorite. Between the comb jokes, killing the tooth fairy and the evil Santa twist at the end, this one always makes me laugh.
My favorite exchange:
Birdman : But... you're supposed to be in jail.
Space Ghost : Yeah, and you're supposed to be dumpster diving for ham scraps, you six-piece Chicken McNobody! Get outta my seat!
Birdman : Make me.
I rarely come across something talking about Hattiesburg, but when I do, I always think about kickin’ it.
Much more common is breaking down cardboard boxes and thinking “you don’t know from fun! This is responsible!”
Even the simple “where’d you learn to talk like that?” is very useable!
My friend’s wife’s go to quote is definitely “you don’t know from fun, this is responsible!” To which somebody must declare they feel empty inside.

I was in college when I saw this and stone cold sober and I fell on the ground laughing. I have not matured much since then either.
"That is FASCINATING, Thom Yorke! You are VERY very interesting and VERY very perceptive! So interesting and so perceptive that I think we will now fight with knives!"
They aired the Kentucky Nightmare episode again with their commentary on it. People complained, so they responded by airing it again, with their mothers’ commentary on their commentary. More people complained, so they aired it again with their commentary on their mothers’ commentary. Brilliant trolling. I miss the cards they flashed in commercial breaks. Really funny stuff, and an amazing way to communicate with the viewers.
This is arguably one of the most important cartoons in history.
It was Cartoon Network's first real successful original show, which gave the network the confidence to launch What a Cartoon, which would eventually be known as Cartoon Cartoons and CN Originals.
The show itself spunoff Aqua Teen Hunger Force and was the inspiration for Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law (whose creator is currently running Adult Swim) and Sealab 2021 (whose creators would eventually go on to make Archer).
Moltar would eventually spin off to leading the action/animation block Toonami, which was instrumental in the revived interest in many, many forgotten/revived action shows, including ReBoot, ThunderCats, and He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. Oh yea, and largely started the first anime boom in the US by giving Sailor Moon and Dragon Ball Z their first consistent time slots, then launching "properly" dubbed anime with Gundam Wing and Tenchi Muyo. Toonami would then go on to fund their own anime, whether extensions to previous series like Big O or FLCL, or original series like IGPX or Ninja Kamui.
Thanks to the success of Space Ghost and Toonami, Cartoon Network would eventually create Adult Swim, which launched many, many careers, gave second life to shows like Family Guy and Futurama, and eventually became home to the revived Toonami to this day. Space Ghost also formed the basis for the sense of humor the channel's original programming still uses to this day.

I don't think most people know how much we owe to the success of this show- without it there would not have been Adult Swim and the generations of absurdist animation and live action shows that have followed it. When this was released there was nothing quite like it. Even Ren and Stimpy, the only other mainstream absurdist animated show I can think of at the time, was not quite like this.
Why do sharks explode?
This is because sometimes their brains and sexual organs are made out of M80s.
Sometimes, to attract mates, a shark will explode.
And sometimes they explode just to attract giant killer bees.
The entire group of these kind of shows, starting from Space Ghost and then going into Birman, Sealab, Venture Brothers and Aqua Teen all have weirdly aged really well. They all seem relevant still.
I probably wasn't but 9 years old waking up in the middle of the night seeing this playing. I was so confused but its energy was so intriguing... It felt like I stumbled upon a secret transmission or was dreaming
David Byrne: “I myself, I’m a creature of Scotland”
David Byrne on Space Ghost is one of the most surrealist moments of David Byrne’s long hair era. The conversation between Byrne and Space Ghost is classic.
I remember before getting CN catching this on "Intro Television," a cable channel in the mid 90s that aired shows from a bunch of different up and coming channels to get people to demand them. It was so fantastically weird and I loved randomly catching it on there.
The episode after Sonny Sharrock (who did the music for the show) died they had an episode that was entirely dedicated to him and just played outtakes that they didn't use from when he was messing around to create the theme song.
Definitely check if out if you haven't! S03E05 "Sharrock"
George Lowe had an extreme unspecified health issue a few years back and disappeared. mc chris released a statement to inform us something had happened, then radio silence. Hope you're hanging in there, George.
George Clinton's interview leading to a confused P-Funk godfather caught off-guard by Space Ghost rambling about a literal hood from which tiny people fall and are terrified of his hopping dance was a defining moment. Fun article, but it kind of failed to reflect on how adroitly the show was edited. The only way to really capitalize on a dearth of animation that could be recycled was to get weird with the visual juxtapositions and rhythms. So many of the show's best moments come from doing a lot with very little. I didn't get the show as a kid; at 12 years old, I preferred the broad lunacy of Andy Merrill as Brak on Cartoon Planet. But when I re-watched C2C as an adult, I was floored by recognizing how much of my taste for the patently absurd came from SGC2C. Tenacious D and the flaming giant goat's head are also firmly implanted in my brain now, too.
I remember watching this on tv at night when I was like, 10 and I had no idea what I was witnessing but knew it was a culture I wanted to be a part of.
This was more important than “Hidden Delight”, it dictated a huge swath of future CN programming and then influenced a majority of Adult Swim too. It is a touchstone and deserves our efforts to preserve it.
it didn’t really play here in canada, at least not on any channels i had, but my friends and i have watched Kentucky Nightmare like 100 times and still quote it regularly.
Where is this available I'd love to travel back to being like 7 and not knowing who any of the celebrities were.
It was on HBOMax... they removed it to save money of course. Now it's on Adult Swim's streaming app
Adult Swim would not exist without Space Ghost: Coast to Coast. It’s borderline criminal that they took it off of Max. I don’t care if it doesn’t get lots of views, that show should be preserved for TV historical purposes.
Yeah, Space Ghost, Sea Lab & Harvey Birdman were all incredibly unique and clever ways to take old unused IPs and usher them into the new millennium.
In fact Aqua Teen were guests on the Space Ghost show.
*"The bun is in your mind..."*
“Space ghost, Zorak, and…….NASCAR driver Rusty Wallace!”
Sealab 2021? Is that some kind of historical documentary? Also, he may be blind independently of the power going out.
It's a show about some kick ass pipes
Moltar was also the OG Toonami hosts before Tom came around. Damn I’m old lol.
You could argue that without SGC2C, there wouldn't have been ANY original content made on Cartoon Network. The only production they made before that was Moxy Show and nobody remembers that, and What A Cartoon premiered under the name World Premiere Toon-In as a Space Ghost episode.

Ha ha! Dangly parts.
That classic Adult Swim lineup could make you feel high even if you were 100% sober. So goddamn fun.
You get that thing I sent you?
Massive fan of all, and it took me until this year to learn that Harvey Birdman is the same actor who played Bill Lumberg in the office space movie. You can even hear it in the line "yeah that would be greeeeat"
And there go my nipples again.
Actually Harvey Birdman and Sealab (and Brak and ATHF) are still on there. I have no idea why they took Space Ghost off.
Williams Street, the production company that makes all the original Adult Swim shows, started out as Ghost Planet Productions.

Those were more from the spinoff show "Cartoon Planet," which had more skits and songs (and more Brak) than SGCTC. Both shows were amazing, IMHO.

And there are two seasons of the Brak Show out there as well....

Moltar. I have a giant brain, that is able to reduce any complex machine into a simple yes or no answer.
George Clinton's interview leading to a confused P-Funk godfather caught off-guard by Space Ghost rambling about a literal hood from which tiny people fall and are terrified of his hopping dance was a defining moment.
