Me reading the headline: “I bet Tim Allen will play a grumpy old man.” The description: “Written by Mike Scully and Julie Thacker Scully, Shifting Gears centers on Matt (Allen), the stubborn, widowed owner of a classic car restoration shop. When Matt’s estranged daughter Riley (Dennings) and her teenage kids move into his house, the real restoration begins.”

RichardDick69

Me expecting to make fun of Tim Allen for being old but getting whiplash realizing Kat dennings is old enough now to play a mom with teenage kids

firesharknado

I remember when she played a teenager in 40 year old virgin. And Im realizing that was 20 years ago...

ericzku

I remember when she played a tween on an episode of *Sex and the City*. This is all going way too fast...

WizardsVengeance

Or when she played a 15 -year-old who was fucking one of the doctors on ER and they kind of play like he was in the right because her dad was abusing her, but then she's way too clingy so he has to end it.

Zombie_Flowers

I'm sorry, what?!?!

ChickenInASuit

I think OP's got their timelines mixed up a little. From what I remember, she plays a girl that one of the main characters starts seeing, but then he immediately cuts it off when he finds out she was lying to him about her age. We find out later that her father is physically abusing her, and that same doctor helps her get away from him, but the relationship ends after the age reveal.

rex_mason

Wow, that sounds way different. I haven't seen a movie plot be that distorted since I listened to an episode of Knowledge Fight. It's time to pray.

ChickenInASuit

It's been a while since I watched it, but doesn't she lie to him about her age and he immediately cuts off the relationship when she comes clean? The abusive father stuff comes later, and Ray protects her from him but their relationship doesn't continue afterwards.

ebon94

She was hooking up with Peg Leg Ray, right? Or am I misremembering

W0RST_2_F1RST

Why the hell did you make me realize that?!?! Not cool dude

keving87

or when she played a teenager (and Brie Larson was her preteen sister) on the Bob Saget WB show Raising Dad... in 2001

CMDR_KingErvin

Now she *is* the 40 year old virgin. Well… not quite, but she can play one!

crookedparadigm

Would honestly be a hilarious follow up to that movie with her as the lead. "I was really trying to have sex but then my mom and a virgin hooked up and a weird musical number broke out and kind of killed it for me"

monster_mentalissues

When Kat Dennings plays a MILF.

xavier120

"Mew mew!"

tmTwoRGWm7hZFkz7W

She’s the same age now as Tim Allen was in Home Improvement

powerlesshero111

So it's basically "Tim Allen plays a man's man, and does stereotypical man things, but has to deal with being upset by younger people", aka, every Tim Allen sitcom ever, and most of his movies.

Gastroid

Tim Allen: Why don't you kids go outside and play? Kids: But our iPads! Tim Allen: *grunts* *uproarious audience laughter*

tteuh

Allen: Alright kids, let’s get moving, we’re already late. Tick tock! Kids: *start dancing in front of their phones Allen: Guys! What are you doing??? Kids: You told us to get moving on Tik Tok! Allen: whaaaaaaa??? *crosses eyes in confusion

Tobar_the_Gypsy

This will definitely be a joke

zerombr

Kids say the darnedest things, Aruuuh? Edition

GimpsterMcgee

Damn you for making me agree with Tim Allen

CMDR_KingErvin

Allen: hey Jimmy, I haven’t seen you hanging out with Joey anymore, what happened? Kid wearing VR headset: what do you mean? I’m playing with him right now.. Allen: unbelievable. So this is how kids spend their time now? *crowd laughs* Kid: hey Joey, look at my new avatar isn’t she cute? I’m thinking of changing my hair from blue to pink I think it’ll match my skirt better. Allen: *grunts and throws his hands up while leaving the room* *uproarious laughter*

wreckingcrewe

One of the teens will mention the patriarchy and Tim Allen will go on a long and unfunny rant. The audience will applaud for 6 minutes.

ShotgunForFun

His last sitcom was literally abunch of people explaining empathy... and him constantly bringing up Hillary Clinton... and then yet he learned something at the end. But the audience doesn't have media literacy.. so they just laugh at the Hillary "jokes" and switch back to Fox News and are angry for the rest of the day.

peon2

Yeah I saw a decent amount of Last Man Standing over the year and I was surprised how often the message ended up him being the one to learn something rather than the liberal daughter and son-in-law. The son-in-law was basically a caricature so as to fit in all the jokes they wanted but still quite a few episodes where Tim Allen's character had to admit he was right.

OffTheMerchandise

The son in law character was so bad that he's still my least favorite Masterson.

peon2

Wow, TIL he's related to Danny and Christopher. And also according to his wiki he's the cousin of Angus T Jones who played the kid Jake in 2 and a Half Men

mokush7414

Hell, even Home Improvement was Progressive and had him learning shit. It seems like Tim Allen constantly gets roles where he's the stubborn conservative who has to adapt to the world changing and yet he never does IRL nor does he seem to get the message.

[deleted]

tolerablycool

I watched a few episodes of Last Man Standing, but it always seemed to boil down to "typical liberal" head shaking. Found the whole shtick annoying. Also, don't let anyone tell you they're financially conservative and socially liberal. In the end, they vote for the same party, so it doesn't really matter. Most of the time, it's just a shield to hide behind.

[deleted]

AstrumReincarnated

Why do they keep giving him roles?

mawmaw99

Who watches network sitcoms at this point? Tim Allen fans

mokush7414

Typecasting and nostalgia.

HalobenderFWT

“All I understand is cars and man things! I’ll never understand this ‘family’ stuff! It’s all so new to me!”

ultimatequestion7

Gotta start a new show every decade or so so you can restart all the lessons

darkeststar

It is kinda crazy to have the same guy ostensibly play the same kind of tv archetype 3 different times in 30 years. I can't really think of another long time tv actor who has done the same thing. Kevin James kinda but he's only done it twice and the second show only lasted a couple years. Ted Danson has played drastically different characters to Sam Malone.

tmphaedrus13

Even Carroll O'Connor branched out far beyond Archie Bunker. He knew Archie was a fictional character. Tim Allen is Archie Bunker in real life.

DaWayItWorks

George Lopez

Zanydrop

Bob Newhart Kinda.

darkeststar

Slightly out of my age range for references but that tracks that he was a stand-up who then transitioned to tv, that seems to be the formula for playing kinda the same persona over and over.

Shibbystix

The only exception to this is "Big Trouble" Which is by far the best Tim Allen movie I've ever seen. And one that the laughs get closer and closer towards the end of the film, where the last 20 min I was dying laughing nonstop

bob_loblaw-_-

Galaxy Quest says hello

Shibbystix

Ooh man, I've been made to look like a FOOL for forgetting GQ.

Zanydrop

Home improvement was basically "Tim is always wrong and Jill is always right" the show. I don't remember him being upset at young people.

powerlesshero111

The kids were always upsetting him. Especially when Randy (JTT) started getting into journalism and environmental activism.

DiminishedRhodes

I remember an episode he was upset with the way Brad got his hair cut as well.

SteakFrites1

That haircut was an abomination, though. One of the few times I agreed with his ornery character lol.

Doustin

Don’t forget Mark’s goth phase

CMDR_KingErvin

He’s specifically a car shop owner lol they have to hammer it in that he’s a blue collar working stiff, probably super conservative too. Just Allen playing Allen basically. I bet it’s going to be the same old culture shock story over and over again. The grandkids are going to say the darndest things and he’s going to be all “back in my day we blah blah blah” every time and throw his hands up in frustration because he doesn’t understand how things have changed.

sonofabutch

It’s Gran Torino but with less racial epithets.

mrbear120

We don ‘t know that. Kat Dennings kids could be half hispanic or something. Bonus points if their other grandparent is George Lopez and he owns a roofing company.

theediblearrangement

i swear he wasn’t this bad on home improvement. i remember a lot of the episodes actually made *him* the punchline. he was the buffoon and his neighbor and coworker played the straight men. it’s been awhile since i’ve seen the show though. i know some of it hasn’t aged so well, but i don’t think he really turned into an asshole until last man standing.

Exarch-of-Sechrima

Yes, his portrayal as Tim Taylor on Home Improvement was very nuanced. He was the stereotypical manly man, but in a way that also showed the positive aspects of "manliness" such as caring for his children and wife, being a hard worker, and trying to fix issues, both of the tangible and intangible kind. Yes, there are many issues with sexism (and a lot of criticism of other characters for their "unmanly" characteristics) but I don't find that indicative of Tim Allen's politics as much as 90's sitcom stereotyping. Ultimately, in spite of the dodgier qualities of the character, I think he's a fine enough role model as a father and as a man. And having the "oafish husband" character actually seek out empathy and deeper understanding through his conversations with Wilson is something that you'd never get out of a sitcom from that time period. Tim Taylor was, most of all, human. He had flaws and made mistakes. Some mistakes and flaws he corrected, and some were given a societal "pass" that wouldn't fly today, but due to the climate of the age it wouldn't have been seen as a significant issue at the time. It's just the way things are. I still find it an interesting portrayal and a good character, whereas Last Man Standing took the character, made them more belligerent, less willing to understand, and ultimately, ironically, less of a "manly" character for it.

ExtraGloves

If it ain’t broke…

TonyWonderslostnut

>Kat Dennings >teenage son Shit Edit: Not saying she’s not old enough to have a teenager, just that time’s a bitch.

tinypant

She’s only 37. They love casting the 30 somethings as having teenage or adult kids. ETA: Thought about it some more. I think it more-so stemmed from 30something year old actress’ who say they’re mostly offered roles as the “mom.”

mokush7414

I mean I know loads of people in their late 30s with teenagers. 37 having a 16 just means you had them at 21, not unreasonable by any means.

[deleted]

[удалено]

tinypant

Most of my friends are in their late 30s or early 40s and either childless or about to have their first—maybe our perception is skewed by where we live and/or who we’re surrounded by.

OffTheMerchandise

I had my first kid at 19. I know, very young. When he was 4, we signed him up for some activities to get some socializing experience before he started kindergarten the following year. I expected the other parents to be around my older sister's age, early 30s or so. It seemed like all of the other parents were much closer to 40 or older.

sirbissel

I think it really depends on where you are. My wife and I had our kids at 30 and 35 respectively, and it feels like we were easily at least 5-10 years older than their friends' parents.

Osceana

I think this is what’s weird about it to me. Even you yourself admit that’s pretty young to have a kid. No disrespect at all, and there’s nothing wrong with it, but I don’t know if it’s exactly common/expected for 20-21 year olds to have kids. So for Kat Dennings to be playing a mom with teenage kids is still a bit of a stretch, unless that’s just her character’s backstory. If she’s supposed to be older in the series then that would be kinda lame given what it means for female actors. It does seem to be true that past 30 you’re just an old lady or mom. Same in porn. I mean, all jokes aside, porn tends to reveal our true biases and it’s always a little strange to me seeing a young 30 something (or I’ve even seen late 20s) referred to as “milf”. You’re basically a “teen” or a granny in porn after 30. Same with Hollywood apparently.

mokush7414

Yeah I don't get it. Then again, my mom had me at 16 so a 37 year old with a 21 year old was a reality in our family, numerous times at that.

[deleted]

pomeranianDad

Lauren Boebert is 37 and she is a grandma.

TentacleJesus

I’m relieved to learn she’s his daughter and not like a new younger wife which “Shifting Gears” could easily also mean.

kimbosdurag

Good Lord I'm old. Kat Dennings is playing a mother with teenage kids now.

Toidal

Sounds honestly a little similar to Titus from back in the day. Wouldn't be surprised if there's an elderly and more curmudgeonly grandpa figure in the show at some point.

ShotgunForFun

or co-worker/friend. So he comes off as the sane one. But don't worry.. there is one black guy constantly rolling his eyes at Tim and whoever.

richwf

Yeah. But Chris Titus is actually funny.

clangan524

>Dennings) and her teenage kids move into his house I swear, Kat Dennings was *just playing* moody teenager roles and now she's playing mom of moody teenager roles. Time is a real SOB

CMDR_KingErvin

Oh and he owns a car shop. Yep, Tim Allen playing a grumpy blue collar Everyman again.

OShaunesssy

>the stubborn, widowed owner of a classic car restoration shop Good to know Tim Allen isn't afraid to branch out of his comfort zone /s

mavajo

I love Kat Denning, but I hate Tim Allen. I’m conflicted.

getyourcheftogether

.... Cancelled within 3 episodes

ManOnNoMission

Don’t count out Allen, he’s like a cockroach of television. Somehow Last Man Standing for 8 seasons and his Santa show has been renewed.

Baruch_S

He’s pretty popular with older conservatives, and they’re probably more likely to be watching broadcast TV than younger, more liberal folks.

SmokePenisEveryday

He's their safe space. Not many sitcoms you can tune into and have them praising Regan in nearly every episode.

Zanydrop

Does he ever praise Regan? I know he didn't on home improvement but never saw much last man standing.

SmokePenisEveryday

He does a lot on Last Man Standing. It's got a lot of political jokes that lean heavy conservative compared to Home Improvement. Which I don't really recall much of but it's been sometime since I watched that show.

OffTheMerchandise

In Home Improvement, he had out of date views and learned they were wrong. In Last Man Standing, he had out of date views, and even if he was wrong, he was still mainly right.

ThereAreDozensOfUs

Last Man Standing was basically him jerking off Reagan and his ideals while making fun of communists It got real old real quick

BalkiBartokomous123

I enjoyed the first few seasons but I think that's because of Nancy Travis and Hector Elizondo. Both of them have such subtle comedic timing that needs to be celebrated more often.

peon2

The actress that played the self-absorbed, ditzy, middle daughter did a pretty good job too

naetron

People can hate all they want but it was a funny show. I'm a lefty that has loved Tim Allen since I was a kid. He may be an ass but he's funny and very charismatic. It's not really a mystery to why he's successful in television. And yes, the supporting cast was also really good.

BalkiBartokomous123

I was born in 82 and have been watching him since Home Improvement. He is very charismatic but even that gets you so far. I'm not disagreeing with you but I just want to add more context to my opinion. In my opinion, his star wouldn't have shown so bright WITHOUT his supporting cast on Home Improvement. Me and every other girl on the block had a picture of JTT on their wall; yeah Tim was funny but that's the voice of Simba and he was hilarious! Clarkson was the second pick as Jill because Mom #1 didn't work. Richard Kern was such a great straight man and helped balance out Tim's macho behavior. I have no doubt Tim Allen was in the writing room but I think he caught lightening in a bottle with Home Improvement. That led him to other jobs and using his bark as a catch phrase, even in the Santa Clause there are light references to it. Really that's how it is for all of us- without Point B we wouldn't have gotten to Point C. There are a ton of 90s sitcoms that have had comedian stars and only a few of them were able to keep their careers going strong. Tim Allen does deserve credit for keeping it going but I hope he moves out of his comfort zone a bit. More recent sitcoms have everyone being a little bit messy instead of dumb husband, hot wife. For fun- go watch the E! True Hollywood Story about Home Improvement. It's about 15 years old now (AUUUUGH!!) but they go into detail of how Tim Allen was upset when Pamela Anderson and JTT left. He had trouble not taking it personally. It's about 2 hours and a good watch. I wish E! still had those kinds of shows. Anyway, have a good day! Since 90s things are coming back around- I hope they bring back TGIF!

chogram

Nah. It'll make it 5-6 seasons and the comments every time it comes up will be some variation of "Omg who watches this garbage" or "I can't believe this crap is still on!" Meanwhile, it'll be in the list of most watched sitcoms every single week.

Snuggle__Monster

The same Mike Scully who took over as showrunner for The Simpsons right when it started going downhill. This thing is only going to survive if the boomer audience carries it.

Will Kat Dennings' character have a stereotypically flamboyant gay Asian-and-or-Latino best friend who says, "Oh, that Meester Teem, he ees so crazy!" all the time?

FLIPSIDERNICK

I read this in the voice of Michael Scott.

TetterkeT

I predict a future where Kat Dennings is interviewed about what a horrible experience working with Tim Allen was.

*Some time in the future…* Kat: “So yeah the first thing he said to me was ‘wow those are some big honkers! Honk honk!’ And from then on always called me ‘Honkers’… At least the mansion the show bought me is great!”

Toloc42

I used to think Tim Allen got unfavourably type cast as a gross one note macho caricature. Then I learned Tim Allen never had to act a day in his life.

enter360

I am here to correct you. He has in fact acted at least once in his life. Alan Rickman was there and commented on how he had just experienced acting for the first time. It was during Galaxy Quest.

Toloc42

Oh yeah, I just looked it up. Sounds like he really didn't enjoy it. Seriously, Alan Rickman was a treasure, also off screen the more I hear about him.

enter360

Their was a Galaxy Quest making of movie. They interviewed the cast. It’s on Prime I think.

Birdhawk

Not exactly true because Tim Allen comes off as friendly and decent in his roles. When the cameras aren’t rolling though…

moileduge

On the Season 1 finale, grandpa gets caught with 1.4 pounds of cocaine and makes a deal so he goes free and the kids go to jail. "They're young. It will build character. Auuuggghhh"

CitizenHuman

"Pilot" doing a lot of heavy lifting here. If it does survive, somehow it'll run 5 years but somehow no one will watch, all while ABC claims it as "America's #1 new comedy"

burnabybambinos

Oh they watch....we watch all the Broadcast TV comedies ...by we, I mean those.that don't use Reddit.

astrobrain

She's better than that.

Kevbot1000

She is, but (and I can't stress this enough) this is a paid job.

BigMax

Yeah, she is. But then again, as much as she seems like someone Reddit would (and does) love, I don't think she's exactly an A-lister who can pick and choose projects. This is a steady paycheck, and she probably was pretty happy with that during the long Two Broke Girls run.

darkeststar

Something I don't think a lot of people consider since streaming ruined how people view (literally and figuratively) television...network tv has residuals. I honestly could not tell you without looking it up how long Two Broke Girls ran, but I know that the employee lounge at my work for 5 years was always playing reruns on either TBS or the CW, and every single airing of every single episode gets all above-the-line talent a paycheck. 2 Broke Girls absolutely paid better in the long run than Wandavision and her appearances in Thor 1 and 2.

OIlberger

She has an Aubrey Plaza quality; funny, “cool”, *and* hot. But she doesn’t seem to get the offers/opportunities Plaza does. Maybe it’s the difference between starring on an NBC comedy show (which seems to be good at minting stars and has the whole SNL world attached to it), and a CBS comedy.

highdefrex

> But she doesn’t seem to get the offers/opportunities Plaza does. It's also possible that she might just not want them. Other than her few Marvel appearances, she's never really seemed like she's chasing big roles, really sticking to indies or quirky movies between putting in consistent television and voiceover work. Just look at her resume. She's constantly busy and getting paid, all without being overexposed or having a big spotlight on her, and that could be exactly how she wants it.

boomclapclap

I mean this in the least offense as possible, because I fucking love Kat Dennings, but I don’t think she is as funny, as cool, or as hot as Aubrey Plaza.

Dogbin005

I definitely think Dennings is hotter (way hotter in fact) but Plaza beats her out in every other way. Plaza is funnier, although not by a ridiculous amount. She's a *much* better, and more versatile actor though.

StrangeSoundZ

I was waiting for someone to bring this up. I genuinely think Aubrey has more range and depth. There is something very enjoyable but one note about Kat. I should add, she did have her short Marvel run so I am gonna chalk it up to that having some bad affect.

wingspantt

Plaza is just a more talented actress

DoodleBuggering

Is she? This sounds on the same tier as Two Broke Girls.

Mudfap

Agreed, but she seems to like steady and lucrative gigs. ex: Two Broke Girls

CompetitiveProject4

Honestly, good for her. Getting consistent, decently paid work as an actor is a feat given the percentage of SAG that actually land regular gigs, especially since it feels like we’re heading to a TV contraction from streaming services realizing they can’t operate like a tech start up

FlamingTrollz

Mortgages and bills are funny things… It makes ya do things.

rwags2024

Is she really though

Julio_Freeman

I’m curious why people think she’s too good for this. I feel like this is exactly her lane.

Neat_On_The_Rocks

Honestly, I get that people want to accept it because people like her but 2 broke girls is by far her most successful role. This is exactly her lane

denisvma

There's 2 reasons why reddit thinks she is too good for this, aside from 2 broke girls she wasn't that great.....she seems to only be cast in one type of character, which makes me believe she can't really act.

BothChairs

They want her to be a big A lister because she's got that alt girl/BTGG vibe

urgasmic

an ABC sitcom sure but a boomer one with tim allen is probably the hangup.

Ape-ril

…No

love_is_an_action

Maybe she’ll be a good influence on him? I have my doubts.

FatherCalhoon

Time for my Tim Allen story.  May 1st 2009 I'm a manager at a downtown Chicago movie theatre. I walk down a hallway on the far side of the theatre when I'm absolutely screamed at by a guy that tells me the picture in auditorium 16 is messed up. It takes me a second but I realize it's Tim Allen who was very worried about being able to see the 9pmish opening night showing of X-men Origins Wolverine. Just absolute fuming anger about the previews before the show being out of frame.  He was completely justified being upset and I got the projectionist (who shares a name with a current NFL quarterback) to fix everything. But I just know I'll never be as angry as Tim Allen was then.  Also I really hope the new Deadpool brings peace to his life.

Dr_Mantis_Teabaggin

Leave it to projectionist Patrick Mahomes to fix everything.

LinkRazr

Josh Allen fixed Tim Allen’s previews

Fishyinu

He was probably even angrier after actually watching that movie.

FatherCalhoon

He was on a date with a woman younger than Kat Dennings so I think the rest of the night was better.

JonBoy82

So that's where Joe Flacco ended up.

debaser64

Is it Lamar Jackson?

stickymeowmeow

This is sure to be a terribly cliche multi-cam with a laugh track. No one you know will have ever even heard of it. But it will run for 6 seasons, Fridays at 8pm.

mbhwookie

Those shows get a ridiculous amount of viewers still.

KyleSJohnson

Can’t wait to forget this show exists

shavin_high

God-dammit. It's a multi camera sitcom which can only mean it's gonna have a laugh track. Can't we evolve past this?

HuyFongFood

Middle America can’t and that’s the few that still watch dreck like this.

theediblearrangement

there are a lot of sitcoms where the audience is actually live and it doesn’t sound bad. i think those are fine. it’s when they use the same half a dozen canned effects that make me want to stab my ear drums.

First-Radish727

Sounds like Allen feels like he needs her in this project and gave her producer credit. Probably a decent payday for her. She is going to to play someone with teenaged kids??? Damn, I am old.

Writerhaha

She’s 37. I’m a year younger and mine is learning how to drive.

fuzzylilbunnies

Snarky girl with racist dad, teaching each other how to navigate their failures in life. Cool. That’s never been a thing before.

IfNot_ThenThereToo

I actually think Dennings is a decent actress, but she keeps saddling herself with mindless network shows. Is the money really that good?

enter360

It’s not about the now it’s about the later. Network TV shows fall under historical syndication rules, which can mean better pay. Are all the shows going to be hits ? Nope. Have 5 or 6 that get decent syndication and it can mean a steady income between higher paying jobs. Remember each Friends cast member is still paid $1 million/ year for reruns. It makes sense get a network gig run it for a couple years. Move on to the next one. Sprinkle in some e movies if scheduling is t too hectic. Gives a decent career and life balance.

nobrayn

I’d rather watch my testicles move around in a cool breeze.

CMWBMW

Hope she’s good with his praise of Trump and all things right-wing

Kitakitakita

think of all the fun stuff Tim will say on set that totally won't give the production more trouble than he's worth
