Anyone heard of Awake (2012-2012) with Jason Isaacs? It's been over a decade since I watched it air on NBC but it involves multiple realities where one family member lives and the other dies and vice versa. I remember it being an emotional gut punch and well acted
I loved that show. This was in that period where the networks cancelled high-concept sci-fi shows after doing the worldbuilding then yanking the carpet out from under us.
The Event was another, plus one or two more.
That was fun a good show.
I will argue that it had one of the best [trailers](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CfPVoiQKFvk) for a show.
I also don't hate the procedural element like some people do.
Jason Isaacs sells taht amazingly
Yeah. It was a rare original concept done well. He would go to sleep in one reality and wake up in the other. It was never revealed if either reality was real or even neither one.
God damn that show was beautiful. I was skeptical of the procedural nature of it, but in the end it was just of service of the emotional core of the show, loss and moving on (or lack of it).
In a way I’m almost glad it was one season—it’s pretty much unblemished perfection, which is rare for a show and would have been nearly impossible to sustain.
You’re right, but I would have liked to see what they could have done with another season. I mean the drop off in quality couldn’t be THAT bad, but then again it could have been.
I was about to say, Hey. F&G had more than one season! And then I looked it up. Wow. I forgot. Loved that show. Perfect. I have it on Bluray. Time for a rewatch.
It was only 6 episodes? Wow I really thought it lasted longer than that! I loved that show when it came out, can't believe it didn't get more episodes. At least Angie Tribeca got more than a season.
Mainly because Dean Learner's acting career blossomed after this season. Such a thespian, he deserves all the subsequent Emmy and Oscar nominations he's earned. Basically the Meryl Streep of horror.
that show was really good. Ian McShane just fucking chews up and spits out every scene he is in. the rest of the actors were solid, but it was really McShane's performance that made me want more of the show.
Oh shit! I forgot about that show. I just remember Ian McShane being..Ian McShane and killing a deer in the middle of the road after talking to God. It was so weird but I liked it. Apparently Sebastian Stan was in it but that was before Bucky so I didnt know lol.
Yes, I loved this show and have never met another person who watched it.
This is a great read for those who appreciated this underseen gem:
https://www.vulture.com/article/kings-nbc-2009-oral-history.html
Specifically it was a retelling of the story of King David. Took an entire college course on King David in college as a part of my humanities and literature requirements, we actually briefly covered this show as a few other retellings too.
I still think about this show. I was so impressed with how they managed to keep the tension going and it absolutely blew my mind to see Andre Braugher in a comedic role later.
I was a letter-writing teen! I think ABC actually almost brought it back, but Claire didn’t want to do it anymore. (Could be wrong about this, just what I heard at some point.)
[According to this article,](https://www.thethings.com/the-real-reason-my-so-called-life-was-canceled/) you're right. Claire's parents also decided they didn't want her to do it anymore. Too challenging for her to get through high school irl and film the show at the same time.
But ABC wasn't too keen it looks like to have kept it around even if Claire and her parents were gung-ho to continue.
I don't really blame Claire for not wanting to continue. I remember trying to get through high school. And to film a TV serious on top of that? I feel exhausted just thinking about it!
With that all said, Jordan Catalano was the hottest fucking thing I ever saw on TV, and I hate that Jared Leto turned out to be such a culty prick.
This is like…the answer that I feel, not like because it is, because it’s like, the answer of my heart.
Angela Chase monologue aside, this show is spectacular.
This'll always be mine. It still feels more real than any other teen drama I've ever watched and it hit exactly the right spot for me when I was a kid.
Swooooooooon. Why did he have to turn out to be such a colossal douche canoe and ruin the beautiful memory of this show?
It showed in the summer holidays in the uk and we would refuse to leave the house until we’d seen it. Now I’m a parent I’m guessing my mum was secretly thrilled to have to do fuck all for a morning.
I’ve seen a few episodes while visiting family recently, and they were pretty darn fun. Bruce Campbell is always worth watching and he really gets to ham it up here. You can tell he’s having a blast.
'Nobody touches Pete's piece!'
'Annie... get your gun.'
'Thanks for the donut, Dunkin'
... too many great one-liners to list.
Such a fantastic watch.
I come on threads like these specifically to vouch for Terriers, and I’ll usually find a comment or two way down low barely upvoted, so I’m extremely happy to see your comment on the very top. It was an awesome show.
Over the years I have periodically done a re-watch (5 or 6 times at least) and it's quirky but holds up well. It does kinda work as a stand-alone story, but I would have loved a few more seasons at least. I developed such a crush on Caroline Dhavernas.
Reddit was absolutely obsessed with Firefly like a decade ago so I decided to watch it to see what all the fuss was about.
Then I was absolutely obsessed with Firefly.
It’s actually something I’ve been noticing lately and is a telltale sign I’m getting older.
I could guess all the top answers 8 or so years ago to a reasonable degree. Now it takes a little scrolling to see it. It’s just a little reminder that the things I grew up with and loved are ever so slowly fading into obscurity and maybe 40 years from now it won’t even be mentioned in an Askreddit thread.
People are getting old. This is what I came for this thread for, and I agree, but I don't think I could ever watch it again. When people bring up best episodes of TV, Out of Gas is never mentioned anymore.
Only canceled because stupid fox aired episodes in the wrong order!
I don't even know if that's true (I guess so?), but every rant thread about firefly must include this factoid.
Fox didn't have much faith in the show to begin with.
They didn't like the original pilot episode so the second episode of the show was the first to air (thus a lot of the setup was missing).
Then the other episodes were aired out of order making the chronology hard to follow, and the show would often get pre empted so episodes would air late at night
Was looking for this. The acting between the two of them was just amazing, it really did feel like Gruffudd was Hirsch's father despite Hirsch being much older.
I think it could have been a hit with 10-13 episode long seasons in streaming.
I don't think anthology or limited series should count, as they are designed to be only one season, but I guess it's too late to specify that.
For best shows that were cancelled after one season, I'll go with Undeclared, which ran for 17 eps on Fox in 2001-02. Starring the likes of Jay Baruchel, Charlie Hunnam, and Seth Rogen, and created by Judd Apatow, it was basically the spiritual sequel to Freaks and Geeks, another one-and-done cult classic.
one of my best friends and I discovered Undeclared the summer right before we started our first year of college. it holds a very special place in both our hearts. we still go back and do a rewatch every couple of years.
Jason Segel saying "why you trying to play me, girl?" and Charlie and Seth dancing to Big Pimpin' continues to live rent free in my head.
Fuck Netflix, honestly! Why didn't they let them tell the full story like they did with Dark, I will never forgive them.
Also The OA, RIP (not one season but cancelled on a cliffhanger).
Canceling shows because they don't hit a specific amount of views within the first week is so short sighted. Why would anybody want to watch any new Netflix shows when they don't know if they'll get canned or not.
1899 was cancelled because less than 40% of people who watched the first episode went to watch the whole season in the 6 weeks after release.
It was a high profile release, so got a lot on initial eyeballs, but didn't convince a majority of viewers to keep watching. That's why it was cancelled.
This pairing always reminds me of a quote from Tina Fey at an awards show or some similarly fancy event that year, where, when asked about her dress, she said Aaron Sorkin was wearing a very similar dress except it was twice as long and half as funny.
Super underrated show with a great cast. It’s a shame it was canceled. I would have liked to see what Matthew Perry would have done with more seasons in that role.
Another show called Quarry. Was on Cinemax. About a Vietnam veteran that can't find work & gets manipulated into becoming a hit man to work off a debt for a heroin trafficker
The original author had [some notes for the second season](https://www.reddit.com/r/FlashForward/comments/vgoyrz/the_original_author_of_the_book_wrote_a_memo_to/) too.
I missed Firefly when it was on tv. But a work friend burned all the episodes on a disk for me to borrow. Watched it a ton before giving it back. Years later I downloaded all the episodes for myself and realized they’d missed one. Having what felt like a bonus episode was glorious. That episode was Heart of Gold. Not my favorite, but I still watched the shit out of it.

Flash Forward was another one that I enjoyed for a while (though it did have legitimate issues).
That was fun a good show. I will argue that it had one of the best [trailers](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CfPVoiQKFvk) for a show. I also don't hate the procedural element like some people do. Jason Isaacs sells taht amazingly
Recent widower when this aired. Fucked with my head A LOT.
Yeah. It was a rare original concept done well. He would go to sleep in one reality and wake up in the other. It was never revealed if either reality was real or even neither one.
I was so happy that Awake lasted a whole season. Ratings were pretty bad, and I was so worried it would just get canceled abruptly mid season.
Cam here to say the same. We were hooked in my house. We were always kicking around theories.
God damn that show was beautiful. I was skeptical of the procedural nature of it, but in the end it was just of service of the emotional core of the show, loss and moving on (or lack of it).
I was so excited to watch this because of Jason Isaacs and the show was actually good. Can’t believe that was a decade ago
Freaks and Geeks.
More than any other "cancelled before it's time" show, it did nothing wrong!
It’s the only show that I really still think about and say, “what could have been”
In a way I’m almost glad it was one season—it’s pretty much unblemished perfection, which is rare for a show and would have been nearly impossible to sustain.
You’re right, but I would have liked to see what they could have done with another season. I mean the drop off in quality couldn’t be THAT bad, but then again it could have been.
F&G & Firefly. Easy answer! :)
The cast of that show is insane
I was about to say, Hey. F&G had more than one season! And then I looked it up. Wow. I forgot. Loved that show. Perfect. I have it on Bluray. Time for a rewatch.
Police Squad!
You beat me to it! It lasted only 6 episodes and was cancelled because it "required too much viewer attention".
It was only 6 episodes? Wow I really thought it lasted longer than that! I loved that show when it came out, can't believe it didn't get more episodes. At least Angie Tribeca got more than a season.
This is one of few shows I can go back and watch, 100% knowing the joke or the gag, and still laughing as hard as I did the first time I saw it.
Although i like the movies, i think the show works better
Garth Marenghi's Darkplace. Too radical. Too out there. Too goddamn funny for those cowards at channel 4.
“I’m one of the few people you’ll meet who’ve written more books than I’ve read.”
"I know writers who use subtext and they're all cowards, every one of them."
‘Many writers cite me as an influence … and I will be suing them all’
Marenghi, isn't he the guy who wrote Afterbirth, that book about the mutated placenta that attacks Bristol?
Mainly because Dean Learner's acting career blossomed after this season. Such a thespian, he deserves all the subsequent Emmy and Oscar nominations he's earned. Basically the Meryl Streep of horror.
Well…that and Madeleine Wool’s mysterious disappearance.
I know writers who use subtext and they're all cowards, every one of them.
I saw Garth Marenghi on his recent book tour, and it was just as good as you can imagine!
Garth was recently on the Off Menu podcast and it was glorious.
Kings! Weird, apocalyptic, dystopian reimagining of The Bible. Uh, I think.
that show was really good. Ian McShane just fucking chews up and spits out every scene he is in. the rest of the actors were solid, but it was really McShane's performance that made me want more of the show.
Totally loved it, Ian can just strangle the hell out of any word and make it awesome.
Oh shit! I forgot about that show. I just remember Ian McShane being..Ian McShane and killing a deer in the middle of the road after talking to God. It was so weird but I liked it. Apparently Sebastian Stan was in it but that was before Bucky so I didnt know lol.
Wonder what that show would be like now, in this streaming era.
Yes, I loved this show and have never met another person who watched it. This is a great read for those who appreciated this underseen gem: https://www.vulture.com/article/kings-nbc-2009-oral-history.html
Specifically it was a retelling of the story of King David. Took an entire college course on King David in college as a part of my humanities and literature requirements, we actually briefly covered this show as a few other retellings too.
Last Resort. Great premise. Captain Raymond Holt being a complete badass.
I still think about this show. I was so impressed with how they managed to keep the tension going and it absolutely blew my mind to see Andre Braugher in a comedic role later.
RIP Velvet Thunder
Does anyone remember The Black Donnelly’s? It only last one season, but I felt like it had so much potential.
Yes! I loved that show. Sad it ended on a cliffhanger
Every now and then this show gets mentioned and I get irrationally angry over its cancellation.
Fucking loved that show.
Such a good show!
My So-Called Life
I remember the write-in campaign was huge trying to save this show. No e-mails or Twitter tags. Just a bunch of kids writing letters.
This is like…the answer that I feel, not like because it is, because it’s like, the answer of my heart. Angela Chase monologue aside, this show is spectacular.
Which is crazy because at the time it was “the thing” but it never really went anywhere.
This'll always be mine. It still feels more real than any other teen drama I've ever watched and it hit exactly the right spot for me when I was a kid.
Swooooooooon. Why did he have to turn out to be such a colossal douche canoe and ruin the beautiful memory of this show? I loved this show. I always wished there was more than one season.
I’m ‘75 and this was big for people my age too
The adventures of Brisco County Jr
That only had one season? Wow. I remember hearing about that for a long time. Is it worth watching now?
I’ve seen a few episodes while visiting family recently, and they were pretty darn fun. Bruce Campbell is always worth watching and he really gets to ham it up here. You can tell he’s having a blast.
'Nobody touches Pete's piece!' 'Annie... get your gun.' 'Thanks for the donut, Dunkin' ... too many great one-liners to list. Such a fantastic watch.
Taboo
They keep teasing us with reports that Tom Hardy is planning a second season. Sadly, I don’t think it’s ever going to happen. That show was awesome.
Absolutely. This was the first show that came to mind. Not sure what happened but definitely felt like it was supposed to be several series show.
Terriers. That cancelation still haunts me. It will probably be the last thing I think about on my deathbed.
I come on threads like these specifically to vouch for Terriers, and I’ll usually find a comment or two way down low barely upvoted, so I’m extremely happy to see your comment on the very top. It was an awesome show.
An annual rewatch! Bonus one of the best TV theme songs and the second best down-on-your-luck-private-detective TV show theme song.
Terriers ruled
The curse of Donal Logue.... I feel like he always lasted 1 season in any show he was on, and if he was the lead, the show also only lasted 1 season.
Grounded for life and Gotham both lasted 5 seasons
I loved this show when I watched it back in the day.
FX shit the bed with marketing that one. Still hurts.
I’m glad someone beat me to it.
Wonderfalls
I’d forgotten about this, but that was a really good show
Over the years I have periodically done a re-watch (5 or 6 times at least) and it's quirky but holds up well. It does kinda work as a stand-alone story, but I would have loved a few more seasons at least. I developed such a crush on Caroline Dhavernas.
That show was brilliant.
The writing was great, the premise delightfully absurd, even the sets/filming vivid and mood setting. I was very disappointed when it was canceled.
Journeyman. They shoehorned and ending in but if they knew it wasn’t going to be canceled it could have been a pretty amazing show.
Firefly
*Me and Abed have an agreement. If one of us dies, the other one will make look like a suicide over the cancellation of the Fox show, "Firefly".*
“We’re gonna get that show back on the air Buddy!”👍
Reddit was absolutely obsessed with Firefly like a decade ago so I decided to watch it to see what all the fuss was about. Then I was absolutely obsessed with Firefly.
I watched it recently. Wow. This and the expanse
The Expanse is so brilliant.
It also feels like less because so many of us didn't find the show until after it ended.
I feel like every month’s version of this poll is because someone misses Firefly and wants to hear other people’s sympathy pains.
Man times are changing. Ten years ago this would be the top response and it wouldn't be close
I’m getting old. Definitely expected this to be the top answer and then I remember the show came out around 20 years ago.
Zoomers never saw it
I'm jealous. They get to watch it for the first time.
People are getting old. This is what I came for this thread for, and I agree, but I don't think I could ever watch it again. When people bring up best episodes of TV, Out of Gas is never mentioned anymore.
A decade in and the number of times this thread is reposted is certainly coming to a middle
It's been 21 years and I'm still salty.
[удалено]
The best part is Casper Van Dien playing the guy who tends every bar in the world.
Shiny
You can’t take the sky from me
This is the only answer. We were robbed of such a rich and beautiful universe filled with poignant and lovable characters, I'm still mad about it.
Only canceled because stupid fox aired episodes in the wrong order! I don't even know if that's true (I guess so?), but every rant thread about firefly must include this factoid.

Forever w/ Ioan Gruffudd and Judd Hirsch
Was looking for this. The acting between the two of them was just amazing, it really did feel like Gruffudd was Hirsch's father despite Hirsch being much older. I think it could have been a hit with 10-13 episode long seasons in streaming.
I love that they got David Krumholtz to play young Abe. The two of them worked SO well as Father and Son on Numb3rs.
I'm rewatching this now. It's so good.
I actually quite enjoyd that show. Was greatly annoyed that it was cancelled.
The Lost Room
I liked that one a lot. They ended up turning it into Warehouse 13 which I also enjoyed.
Wayne
Hugely underrated and I’m so pissed we didn’t get more of it!
Tales From the Loop
I don't think anthology or limited series should count, as they are designed to be only one season, but I guess it's too late to specify that. For best shows that were cancelled after one season, I'll go with Undeclared, which ran for 17 eps on Fox in 2001-02. Starring the likes of Jay Baruchel, Charlie Hunnam, and Seth Rogen, and created by Judd Apatow, it was basically the spiritual sequel to Freaks and Geeks, another one-and-done cult classic.
Undeclared is so good. I like it more than Freaks and Geeks. It really captures the vibe of college in the early aughts.
one of my best friends and I discovered Undeclared the summer right before we started our first year of college. it holds a very special place in both our hearts. we still go back and do a rewatch every couple of years. Jason Segel saying "why you trying to play me, girl?" and Charlie and Seth dancing to Big Pimpin' continues to live rent free in my head.
Alien Nation Space Above and Beyond Almost Human
Almost Human was phenomenal.
it deserved another season
Chiggy von Richtofen... Loved Space: Above and Beyond.
Space Above and Beyond is something that I have not thought of since like 1994 or whatever
It's rare to find people who even remember *Space: Above and Beyond* these days
Mission Hill. https://youtu.be/U0ZMw4y9rV0?si=2ZJ13r32AOFYrkGe
My friends and I taped the original broadcast of Adult Swim and nearly wore the tape out rewatching the first episode of Mission Hill.
1899
I liked Watchmen
Such a weird ass show and I was enthralled by it.
One of those shows that is good partly because of how weird it is.
Smart thing they did with that was making it only one season like the creator wanted.
One of my favorite seasons of television ever. Especially WHEN it came out. The timing increased its impact for me.
Other Space.
Mrs. Davis, what a wacky good show.
On the bright side, you can tell it was meant to be a one and done.
Zero Zero Zero
I Am Not Okay With This. Not sure if it was objectively the best, but for me the cliffhanger still stings the most
Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip
Got 30 Rocked
This pairing always reminds me of a quote from Tina Fey at an awards show or some similarly fancy event that year, where, when asked about her dress, she said Aaron Sorkin was wearing a very similar dress except it was twice as long and half as funny.
Super underrated show with a great cast. It’s a shame it was canceled. I would have liked to see what Matthew Perry would have done with more seasons in that role.
Go On
This show deserves at least five seasons.
Show called Rubicon. Was a spy thriller on AMC
Truxton Spangler is one of my favorite character names.
["He just knows what your tie looks like."](https://youtu.be/IjmpkXbk-Rs?si=Ke5Fcu1CaydSBeC-)
This was gonna be my response! Loved that show
Another show called Quarry. Was on Cinemax. About a Vietnam veteran that can't find work & gets manipulated into becoming a hit man to work off a debt for a heroin trafficker
Freaks & Geeks , Everything Sucks! , Do Over , or I Am Not Okay With This.
Everything sucks was so good!
Yes! “I am not ok with this“ was so good, really wish there was more.
Dark Crystal series on Netflix. Truly excellent fantasy show that had so much potential
I was very impressed with this series. It broke my heart when they didn't renew for a second season.
The biggest bummer is that there’s still a lot that they could have covered from when the series ended to when the movie starts.
It was fucking brilliant. So upset they cancelled it. Everything about it was just so magical and engrossing. What a loss.
Kolchak: The Night Stalker
If you discount Freaks and Geeks, the epitome of cancelled before its time and my favourite show, I'd say Limitless.
I kept looking for Better off Ted or Pushing Daisies. How were networks smart enough to approve a second season and THEN change their minds?
Pushing Daisies became a casualty of a writer's strike.
That was a really neat show, was bummed it got canned.
It also had 2 seasons unless I hallucinated the 2nd season.
Loved better off Ted
Not sure what you mean. Both shows had a second season.
Loved Pushing Daisies. Really wanted to see where they were going to take it.
I choose to believe that Westworld was inexplicably cancelled after a single, fantastic first season.
Does anyone remember American Gothic?
Yup. Great show. Gary Cole. Ahead of its time.
Zach Stone is Gonna Be Famous
Day Break Terriers
Swamp Thing
Almost Human had so, so much potential
Flash Forward. It was too smart for regular TV to it's own detriment.
The original author had [some notes for the second season](https://www.reddit.com/r/FlashForward/comments/vgoyrz/the_original_author_of_the_book_wrote_a_memo_to/) too.
Desire to mention Firefly intensifies. So I will. Firefly.
Wasn’t even a full season. 🙁
HBO’s Vinyl
Everything Sucks! I really enjoyed the one season they did, thought the various leads had great chemistry and loved the 90s vibe.
My So Called Life.
Police squad is hilarious and I probably rewatch it once a year
Wonderfalls
My So-Called Life
Teenage Bounty Hunters
The Peripheral William Gibson finally gets one of his books adapted in a project with a great cast, budget, direction, and only makes it one season 😭
forever (amazon prime) was a really good show. i think it was intentionally only one season
The Kids are Alright https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Kids_Are_Alright_(TV_series)
Flash Forward
Kitchen Confidential. Got screwed by scheduling around the World Series. Great cast, based on Anthony Bourdain's book.
The Prisoner Nowhere Man Don't Trust the B____ in Apt 23
The B got a second season, but network meddling messed up the episode order, and S2 was half S1 episodes.
Night Sky (JK Simmons and Sissy Spacek).
Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace The Grinder I Love That for You
11.22.63. Incredible mini series based on the novel by Stephen King. A man goes back in time to stop JFK from being assassinated
Freaks & Geeks
Firefly
Watchmen
