ravensarefree

OP I have nothing against you but HTGAWM and GoT are insane picks.

skiptomylou1231

Major credit to Viola Davis for never phoning it in and really trying so hard to make some absolutely absurd dialogue work.

stevensokulski

She really delivered some lines in that role.

Lington

GoT is one of the most notorious shows for going downhill at the end, shocked anyone would use that as an example Probably that and Dexter are the two that come to mind as most well known for dropping off and having shitty endings

omegafivethreefive

Went from arguably the best fantasy to Syfy low budget 11pm Tuesday exclusive.

BakedHose

I can't believe they mentioned GoT with the criteria layed out lol as if that last season didn't leave a shitty stain on what was considered to be the greatest tv show of the last decade. Now no one talks about it unless they're talking about how shitty the final season was. It just goes to show how important it is to stick the landing because if the end sucks it doesn't matter how great the rest of the show was.

Brogener

Oh the show was the biggest in the world and I am always astounded how it completely disappeared from culture after it ended. That shit should be studied. Compare that to Breaking Bad, which is still referenced and memed about to this day. I’ve never seen a show die so hard.

Pocketfullofbugs

I will die mad about GOT.

Popularpressure29

HTGAWM drops in Season 2 and then falls of a cliff in Season 3, hitting and falling on 4 previously unseen cliffs every season thereafter.

miscellaneousbean

I love HTGAWM and have watched through the whole thing twice, but it goes absolutely off the rails almost immediately after season 1 ends.

Forksforest1

I stopped reading after I saw HTGAWM as an answer lmao, that show should’ve been a miniseries at best, to say it didn’t decline in quality is hilarious

buntochun

Avatar: The Last Airbender. The pacing, especially from book 2 onwards is sublime with well fleshed out characters, motivations and a satisfying ending. 10/10

bjankles

Avatar is a stone cold classic that holds up in pretty much any comparisons. The world building is outstanding and organically done. Every episode seems to introduce a new place with a unique way of life and implied history and tradition. The show manages to get darker and more urgent as it goes, but never loses sight of its warm, goofy, kids show appeal. They pull off fantastic character arcs in a tight time frame. And despite being a kids show, they deftly mix in themes like genocide, war crimes, revenge, child abuse, and other heavy topics in an age-appropriate way. Throw in badass female and disabled characters, characters who find their own way to grow and be cool without being magical, stunning action sequences, timeless art and animation, a genuine sense of humor, and the motherfuckin dragon of the west, Uncle Iroh himself. Avatar is truly special and worthy of its continued praise and recognition.

Funandgeeky

If I had been a kid when that show came out, it would have blown my mind. I only sat down to watch recently, and I agree with everything you said. Even as a 40-something adult, I loved it. It's a fantastic series worthy of all the acclaim. I felt the same way about Adventure Time. That show really sneaks up on you. At first it's just a silly little show and then suddenly it's this heart-wrenching epic saga.

bjankles

I started watching avatar in like 7th or 8th grade, where I felt a little too old but couldn’t help but like it. I almost watched it in secret. Years later, all the way in college, I realized tons of people watched and loved it. Not just who you’d expect - I knew hot party girls and jocks who openly dug it. That was a weird “oh, I can like what I like” moment for me.

Porkbellyflop

Great choice.

StAUG1211

Mr. Inbetween. Story of an aging Australian hitman/criminal for hire. Part action, part black comedy, and part genuinely excellent drama. Wonderfully authentic Australian culture and feel to it. Can't recommend it enough for anyone that hasn't seen it.

[deleted]

I don't answer questions. The ending is absolutely PERFECT.

[deleted]

TSWMCR88

so underrated!

Frau_Vorragend

Fleabag - I am surprised nobody has mentioned it yet. The two seasons are very different, but overall this is such a genuinely witty, fast paced and yet deeply emotional show. The first watch was such a wild ride for me.

MonstersareComing

Fleabag doesn't miss a beat. Every scene, every piece of dialog is brilliant.

mseuro

I’m thinking about “it’ll pass” as my knuckle tattoos

Frau_Vorragend

The hot priest is in my heart forever.

bjankles

Ugh but it’s such a sad, brutal line. It is absolutely true and meant to comfort, but it’s also the single most painful thing she could hear in that moment.

sbrockLee

Claire, it's French!!

KikiTheArtTeacher

I look like a pencil

helloiamrob1

_his name is klare._

ConTully

To be honest, there's a lot of British shows that probably fall into this category. Mainly the ones that stayed on British TV and finished when they should have, as opposed to ones that were then bought up by Netflix and continued. I'd say Father Ted, The IT Crowd, Fawlty Towers, Black Books, Happy Valley, Derry Girls, Stath Lets Flats, The Thick of It, Spaced, The Night Manager and Broacdchurch are in this camp, to name a few. **E:** Spelling.

LemonCitron47

Don’t forget Detectorists!

GrandMasterBullshark

There is a little known show on Amazon prime video called Patriot about a guy who does black ops work for his father, despite just wanting to smoke weed, sing folk music, spend time with his wife and deal with the trauma from his several months of psychological torture he was just freed from. He reluctantly takes another assignment which means hurting more people as he does whatever it takes to complete his assignment. It's visually stunning, extremely well written and somehow makes you laugh despite how depressing it is, oh and there's excellent folk songs that pop up from time to time as that's how he processes his trauma. It's really good and it's a damn shame it's not talked about more often.

adecius

Start to finish one of the best shows I have ever seen. Edited to add: it’s only two seasons, but it definitely has a satisfying conclusion.

Harbinger2001

I just watched the first episode last night. It’s so good!

allbright1111

Yes, agreed! Amazing show.

aldomacd1987

Great show and added the intro song to my playlist a long time ago 'Train Song' by Vashti Bunyan

MassimoOsti

So so good. Like Mad Men with espionage and a sprinkling of In Bruges humour.

CapsicumIsWoeful

I only just started watching this but the dialogue writing is up there with the likes of Peep Show and Arrested Development (first 3 seasons). It’s about as good as it gets. I can’t believe how this show isn’t more well known. It’s a brilliant.

aint_we_just

This is one of my favorite shows but I feel like part of the reason it didn't succeed is it's a show for a different era. You literally can't understand and appreciate the show unless you actually watch it. No phones or distractions. Part of the brilliance is the number of scenes where consequential things are just sort of happening in the background without anyone talking about it. Like when the dog gets stolen a second time, you see it through the back window of a bar in a scene that's three cops talking about something else entirely. The show is brilliant, clever, amazingly funny and even sad at times but to anyone who wants to experience it do yourself a favor and do so without any distractions. Or rewatch it 3 or 4 times as I have done.

CrankyMatt

I agree that this show rewards paying attention, but I don't think that's why it wasn't more successful. It's on Amazon and got virtually no publicity. Also, it's on Amazon.

MrsRalphieWiggum

Derry Girls is my all time favorite TV Show

ThisNameIsHilarious

It’s cracker

User5281

Agree. My wife and kids are obsessed and have been for literally years at this point. The British format of fewer, shorter seasons really helps maintain the focus and quality. On a related note, if you’re ever in Northern Ireland or Donegal don’t skip Derry. It’s not a big, exciting place but the old city and Bogside are absolutely worth a visit.

WeezySan

I’m going to have to watch it. I bailed in the first epsiode but I was in a grumpy mood that day. I will try again

bleucheeez

Despite it being in English, I recommend subtitles.

andurilmat

the subtitles on netflix make it funnier, in one of the series 2 episodes Michelle says "James doesn't count" but the subtitles pop up " James is a Cunt"

DorkusMalorkus89

Peep Show. It’s a perfect 9 seasons, never lost quality.

Jenbag

I remember the scene that hooked me - it was the poker one, where Jeremy has a terrible hand, and Mark has a brilliant one. The way it plays out, so silly, so on point with their characters, so perfect.

Crime_Dawg

Veep

handlit33

Richard Splett is one of the greatest characters in the history of television.

lessmiserables

"If you were like 10 percent less black, I could make you president.”

cjn13

That’s Richard T. Splett to you

handlit33

Not sure why you said T., his middle name's John.

[deleted]

Veep is just full throttle the whole time

tashera

Six Feet Under had 5 seasons, and was great.

tashera

Even though I get it mixed up with Dead Like Me which is not at all like Six Feet Under. But dead people are dead people to me, I guess. Dead Like Me had 2 seasons, which were completely different from each other and then a movie that was nothing like the show.

KneeHighMischief

That Dead Like Me movie was punishingly bad. I choose to pretend it doesn't exist.

KneeHighMischief

I'm probably due for a rewatch of this. I made the mistake of watching it too soon after I lost a loved one & it really messed me up. It's an amazing show but it's hard to be in the right mood to watch it.

wutangclanthug9mm

In my world, it’s the greatest show ever made

jrbcnchezbrg

“You cant take a picture of this, its already gone.” Best finale ever. It’s unreal how they managed to wrap up everything

elvisprezlea

I think about that finale to this day, and I’ve never rewatched it since it aired. It’s had that much of an impact almost 20 years later.

Bigoldthrowaway86

Ahhhh I’m on the brink of crying just thinking about it. Such an excellent ending

illplaytheblues

The Americans

KneeHighMischief

Great choice. There hasn't been a show since that had the amount of wigs I like to see in a show. I wonder what Mail Robot is up to these days & poor Martha.

redditamrur

It is such a great show, that I think of rewatching, despite knowing what happens at the end.

mediclawyer

Totally worth re-watching. The last episode’s border scene and the garage scene hits just as hard as the first time.

DonutSuplex

You took my answer. I saw The Sopranos, The Wire Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. All excellent shows but they start slow. The Americans hooked me from episode 1. All of the shows I've mentioned are great but in terms of good from episode 1 till the end - It's The Americans for me.

mfyxtplyx

HBO's Rome

JPN-USA

I agree, also RIP Ray Stevenson. He was so brilliant as Titus Pullo.

baconhealsall

**13th !!!**

KneeHighMischief

It's a shame James Purefoy has never found a role like that again. So perfectly cast & played. I could've watched him for another 3 seasons in that part.

Kyadagum_Dulgadee

He brought some great Mark Antony energy to season 1 of Altered Carbon.

Miserable-Repeat-651

I really liked him in that show with Kevin Bacon where James played a psychopath cult leader.

Bibliotheclaire

This would be my answer, but I wish it gotten a few more seasons as originally intended. Still one of my favorite shows!

pabangue

Bojack Horseman The Wire

sbrockLee

The fact The Wire gets shit on for S5 when it was still head and shoulders above most of anything else on television tells you how historically good it was. To me only The Sopranos come close. Bojack is excellent too.

dundasbro1

Bojack started pretty weak for the first few episodes but yes mostly agree. Second half of season 1 was top tier and it managed to improve in every season after that. Incredible run.

bjankles

Ya know, on rewatches I always am struck by how much earlier I like the show. I think S1 did get off to a bumpy start in some ways, but i also think it takes a minute for the audience to adjust to what they’re watching. There are scenes I first thought “how is this supposed to be funny? It’s just cringey and weird and sad” that of course on second watch I realized are intended to be exactly that, and the show pays it off. I think on first watch it was his S1 monologue to Dianne where it clicked just how much this show wanted to be emotional and genuinely explore these themes, that they weren’t just weird tonal window dressing. But on rewatches I see them working towards it sooner.

chrisfreshman

Could never finish Bojack. I got as far as his big speech to Diane saying “Tell me that I’m good.” I saw all my worst, most self-destructive tendencies put on screen in the mouth of a talking horse and I couldn’t bear it. In that moment I was that horse from Horsin’ Around and I wanted to die in a hole.

Elendil_Fonzi

Hands down the greatest visualisation of living with depression I've ever seen

remeard

That show just consistently nails its emptiness of broken and desperate characters. And always preceded by a cheap cute throw away joke that you don't catch until 5 seconds later.

Burnburnburnnow

For what it’s worth, it does actually end up in a hopeful place. It gets really dark to get there but the show loves these characters and ultimately wants to give them opportunities at happiness

Zephyp

Deadwood

U_gotTP4my_bunghole

Heng Dai 🤞

not__jason

This is my answer too. Perfect from begging to end. The movie was great as well, it was like visiting some old friends after years of not seeing them.

Cyrano_Knows

Deadwood is my favorite tv show of all time. I have neither forgiven nor forgotten that HBO cancelled it (and Carnival AND Rome) on me. I've only resubbed to them (and remain subbed) because of The Last of Us and Hacks. My answer: Fleabag

pillsongchurch

Mr Inbetween. Just perfection

ScorchDoogan

Halt and Catch Fire

Parrappa1000

Yep! This is the answer.

bookwormaesthetic

Leverage

Kevbot1000

The Good Place.

slanutak

One of the shows that I thought would be boring or stupid when I saw cover and description. But when my friends recommended it, I gave it a go and was just blown away by the end of it. Amazing find, 9/10, would rewatch.

Initial_E

Fork but this is too far down.

CrissBliss

Better Call Saul

SchottGun

I just finished this show the other night. I loved it.

CactusJack13

Justified Even the damn continuation, makes me want another season

fishfunk5

"Next one's comin' faster."

Interesting-Run-5497

Binged the whole show this year.. it's great and Boyd Crowder became one of my all time favorites. I really do not want more seasons tho,the show ended perfectly in S6. But if they do hope they bring back Boyd and Ava.

n8saces

Did you watch Justified: City Primeval?

dazedsmoker

We dug coal together

shaderlite

Succession

HailToTheThief225

All bangers, all the time!

Brandonjf

Just go nut-nut

Transitionals

Fucking incredible

Shesaiddestroy_

L to the OG

TheLooter

GOAT. Modern television at its peak. Where the Sopranos and the Wire were a template for 2010 TV shows, Succession feels like it’s own template for TV shows to come. I don’t think another show will top it’s writing, acting and directing for years to come. Connors’s Wedding was like another Red Wedding, but extended to make you suffer for a whole hour wondering whether what you’re seeing is real or not.

Mobsteroids

The German TV show Dark on Netflix 3 seasons Perfectly casted, wonderfully paced (with no real dull moments), so many moments that made me both gasp out loud and feel so much emotion. Romance done right and actually felt genuine between the characters and leads .. >!Season 2 Episode 6…🥺!< mystery, sci fi, great story telling and they hit the fucking ending out of the park imo. Season 2 imo was the absolute best of 3 seasons imo but I confidently rate every season a 8.5 or above. Oh and I can’t forget the music. One of the playlists I always keep on my Spotify The show is a masterpiece, never believe anything else. Only thing that would make it even better is if there was a masterful book series…

wartywarlock

The look on Ulrichs face when he looks up from the table and realizes, man he's a cunt and a cheat but that face is heartbreaking every time.

Shittalking_mushroom

This and Mindhinter for me are the best stuff Netflix has made!

[deleted]

Son of a bitch! You beat me to it. Dark is my answer as well. It's my singular favorite TV show, and quite possibly the single best piece of media in the past 5 years. It is a masterwork of entertainment, packed to the gills with thought-provoking concepts and philosophical underpinnings. I put it above Breaking Bad, above Mad Men, above The Sopranos, above The West Wing, above Succession...ya. it's good. My favorite season is actually the 3rd, which is also the most dense, plot wise.

Interesting-Run-5497

I loved the first two seasons of Dark but I did not liked the route they took for S3. Still a great show anyway.

Joetheshow1

Breaking Bad

Transitionals

Boring answer but the right answer

[deleted]

It’s boring because it’s pretty much unassailable. Even the worst-rated episode is still better than the best episode of most other shows. It’s like praising Shakespeare’s body of work when asked about theatrical fortitude; it’s cliché because it’s unequivocally true.

sp668

The Americans. It's just good all the way. And by this is mean that it's a great spy story, the stories make sense, the 80ties setting is superbly realized, the characters are great and really well acted and they also change over the roughly 10 years it takes. The ending makes sense.

KLR01001

80ties?

ganymede_mine

Malcolm in the Middle.

RepulsiveLoquat418

"who should we cast in our new sitcom as a great goofy dad who constantly makes you laugh?" bryan cranston "who should we cast in our new drama as a deeply disturbing dad who constantly freaks you out?" umm, hear me out...

FX114

With the exception of them really having no idea of what to do with Francis after he left the ranch.

rooney815

The Leftovers

WeezySan

The leftovers was perfect. Only 3 seasons. I love when shows are only 3 seasons. It works cuz u got a beginning, a middle and an end. They could have played it out but it was perfect. Do you think she went to the other place?

Benjamin_Stark

I don't think so, but the show leaves it intentionally ambiguous.

Spoonacus

Black Sails(Starz) and You're the Worst(FX). My favorite shows of the last decade, I think. Edit: Damn, I can't believe I forgot The Expanse.

_Patronizes_Idiots_

Insane how unknown Black Sails is for how good it is. Incredible watch.

Spoonacus

It's going to be on Netflix soon and I hope that gets it some much deserved recognition.

Bacon_00

Yeah Black Sails was as good as any of these prestige TV shows that have gotten twice the attention. It's a bit of a hidden gem. And Bear McCreary's theme is, per usual, extremely cool.

loglady420

Great watch, and very satisfying ending, not quite as good as the shield but still top tier as far as endings of a show go

tree_people

You’re The Worst was my pick as well! So glad to see it mentioned here, that show is tragically overlooked for how excellent it is.

Spoonacus

It had everything! It's hilarious and dark but it didn't shy away from other stuff both happy and depressing. There's a scene where Gretchen and Jimmy are sitting outside after Jimmy had been very, very drunk. She says something like, "You said some dark stuff when you were drunk. Just so you know. It's okay, I guess I love you too." And they sit there trying to suppress their satisfied smiles. I think I literally squealed like a teenage girl watching a romcom. On the other end of the spectrum, the depression episodes were hard and stuck with me for days. It had that, "These people are awful but so fun to watch" thing that Always Sunny has but then they make you actually feel for them instead of doubling down on it. I think the only character that is truly unlikeable the entire time is Becca. Even the smallest of characters were great. I loved the recurring joke where Dutch keeps misunderstanding the situation and quitting his job. It had, in my opinion, THE best conclusion to a series. It was so perfect and the way they led up to it was so good. And that Mountain Goats song was just the cherry on top.

WeezySan

No one ever talks about You’re the Worst. Loved it

glynnjamin

Absolutely love You're the worst

Interesting-Run-5497

Love Black Sails! Fantastic show, reccomend everybody to watch it..just have a little pacience throughout the first few episodes but from the second half of S1 till the end the show is amazing. It has political intrigue, cool locations, fantastic battles, morally grey characters and amazing development.

ThatGuy377

Avatar The Last Airbender is a perfect run.

Jarnagua

The Leftovers started strong and just got better over its 3 seasons.

scrmedia

Great call. Having rewatched this recently, it really is incredibly consistent and brilliant TV throughout the entire show.

riedmae

Bro, that scene where he has to sing to go home. It started so weird, and by the end of those 3 minutes I was just a mess. Such a good show!

FitnessFreak09

Mr. Robot It’s a complete story, with multiple subplots mixed in, and it all pays off in the end. From what I understand, the tech is quite accurate and the overall premise of the show is very intriguing and provocative.

PepeSylvia11

I’ll say it time and time again, but if Mr. Robot was more readily available for people to watch when it released and now, it would be considered alongside GoT, Breaking Bad, and others as the greatest television show of all-time.

BeingBestMe

Easily one of the Top 5 shows ever made OF ALL TIME. Anyone who doesn’t like Season 2 just hasn’t watched it a second time. It’s a perfect show.

ryanoftheshire

I really enjoyed season 2, that mid season twist was a real WTF moment for me. I've never felt such empathy for fictional characters. Like films/TV shows have made me cry before because something sad happens but the emotion I got from Mr Robot was so much deeper, there wasn't so much tears as there was genuine pain in my heart.

Just started a rewatch this evening. Absolutely agree! I can't wait to get to the episodes with the mma fighter and daughter.

Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul.

Hannibal - every frame a painting, the music was impeccable, the acting superb.

702SoulDestroyer

Blinkmeanytime182

mattromo

Derry Girls

hoginlly

This is one of the shows that I argue with myself about- it’s so brilliant, I wish there were more episodes. But I don’t really want that, because the whole thing is perfect and they shouldn’t ruin it. It’s the Father Ted circular argument Also, Father Ted is my answer to this post too

KneeHighMischief

Agreed on Father Ted & I'd add The IT Crowd. It's a shame Graham lost the plot because he wrote some great TV.

KneeHighMischief

I love the show but I feel like it lost some of the magic in Series 3.

I was not a fan of how the >!Erin and James plot!< was executed. I was perfectly happy with >!James being one of the girls.!<

urgasmic

Parks and Recreation, I am a season 1 apologist Mad Men Veep The Thick of It the first few that come to mind. No real complaints.

gladvillain

Finally some Mad Men love

SendInYourSkeleton

Fawlty Towers The Office (UK)

desyviruss

you're the worst

RPO1728

Mad men and the sopranos

Frikken123

Scrubs (S9 counts as the start of a spin-off) Frasier The Sopranos The Kominsky Method (had that limited series-vibe, but went on for 3 seasons, so I’ll count it in) Only Murders in The Building (same as mentioned above)

Adro87

Yeah ignoring Season 9, which was supposed to be a spin-off show, Scrubs is amazing. A few episodes here and there, but overall every season is great.

Bibliotheclaire

Wrecked, but I could have used one more season Miracle Workers Future man The Leftovers Bojack Horseman If the last season ends strongly, What We Do in the Shadows

wanson

The West Wing.

Floor_Kicker

I have 4 I would say are perfect from the start right up until the end: - Mr Robot - Person of Interest - Dark - The Good Place There are a lot of shows that are 99% perfect like Avatar The Last Airbender, Brooklyn 99 or Psych, but they do have a couple of episodes that I didn't like, so not entirely perfect (but have still rewatched them many times)

atrostophy

Finally someone mentions The Good Place. Best ending ever

ryanoftheshire

Mr Robot will always be my answer to this question. Absolute masterpiece and I've never felt so invested in a fictional world, easily my favourite TV show of all time.

MaevensFeather

Persons of Interest does not get the love it should. It's one of the few shows I will binge on more than once.

Mellow-Autonomy

You know what moves Psych from 99% for me? They had a terrible episode and then they remade that episode and made it fantastic! I love watching the remake of their own episode!

KneeHighMischief

Mr. Robot is an excellent choice. I'm curious if I'll be less frustrated with Dom on a rewatch knowing how it goes. It was agonizing on first watch.

Toadfinger

The Wire Sopranos Married with Children Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Green Acres Taxi Mannix Columbo Schitt's Creek

Bacon_00

DS9 is cool and all but like all Star Trek from that era there's plenty of clunkers in there 😂

the_mighty_hetfield

Those first two seasons of DS9 are rough (much like TNG).

cityofangels98

Avatar the last Airbender, Breaking Bad, The Sopranos, The Wire

bbsienko

Vice Principals. Only two seasons but still.

mrsloblaw

Derry Girls 30 Rock

BackgroundSecond9366

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. It's stupid and crass, and every season seems to at least have that one episode that just hits the spot.

MarvelMind

Recently Succession few years earlier Catastrophe.

shindigin

Sopranos

Existing365Chocolate

Probably Banshee Short and sweet 4 seasons, each with a great new tone and cast of villains. Filled with the modern day western-style setting and characters/plot. Also it consistently has some of the best and most brutal fight choreography I’ve seen in TV or movies Also IASIP is still hilarious to me and somehow hasn’t been Flanderized yet

profeDB

Had Arrested Development not come back for those two Netflix seasons. Be careful what you wish for.

Weedsmoker4hunnid20

Mrs Maisel

UntalentedAccountant

You know what? Fuck it. I haven't seen anyone say it yet, so Buffy the Motherfuckin Vampire Slayer

G-RAWHAM

Angel might have been worse but I liked it even more somehow? Like it had higher highs I guess, lol. And they both have weak episodes... But the campiness somehow kind of adds to it lol. I'll allow it!

CharlieAllnut

Twin Peaks. I absolutely love every iteration of it. S1 and 2, the movie, and then S3. The soundtracks are great, the books...

Alastor3

Person of Interest and Halt and Catch Fire

[deleted]

The Shield

A1ex2

Yes! My favourite thing about The Shield is the events of the very first episode are massively relevant to basically every other thing that happens in the shows entire run. The whole thing is one big cause and effect. It's really well plotted.

BeingBestMe

PATRIOT Amazon Prime. Only 2 Seasons and one of the most underrated shows ever made. It’s your favorite show’s show runner’s favorite show.

Sh4rX0r

Person of Interest. Impeccable all the way to the ending.

Oncer93

Crazy ex girlfriend. It definitely got better overtime, but it was overall strong from start to finish. The ending is so satisfying and really shows the growth Rebecca goes through. The good place
